It may not have the glitz of the battle of the unbeatens in the Fiesta, but the Orange Bowl will be a great matchup of offense vs. defense: Tech’s o’s vs. Iowa’s x’s. Or is it the other way around?
Either way, it should be fun to watch.
Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz said that he couldn’t remember the last time he faced a team that uses this much option, and that trying to simulate it in practice will be quite a challenge.
The Hawkeyes’ offense isn’t flashy, but with a defense as stout as Iowa’s is, they don’t have to be. A couple of scores here and there is all they need. It’s kind of like Tech’s defense. It doesn’t have to stop everyone all the time, just a couple a game seem to work fine.
Anyway, it’s beena long day so I’ll open it up to your thoughts about the matchup.

funny how the tools are making fun of UGA for looking for a DC when everybody knows after next season PJ will be doing the exact same thing

Since you tech morons can’t seem to grasp this, I’ll speak slowly.
THE NCAA DOES NOT AWARD OR RECOGNIZE THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONS IN FOOTBALL.
Actually Timbo you are only half right – the NCAA does award NC’s in football – they just don’t do it in Div 1A (I refuse to call it FBS). BTW – Paul Johnson has 2 NC’s from the NCAA in football at the highest level that they award them (1AA).

Doug, why do you and others persist in reporting that Tech hasn’t been to a major bowl since 1967? We won a freakin’ national championship in 1990! How much more “major” do you want?

Timbo – Love your comment that GT claims a title when the country was embroiled in WW 1 (that would be the 1917 NC). You do realize that UGA claims the NC in 1942 right? Or don’t you recognize that one?

Tech82 – GT won in the Citrus Bowl in 1990. By “Major Bowls” the networks mean the Rose, Orange, Sugar and Fiesta/Cotton. Cotton used to be considered one of the Big 4, now the Fiesta is.
The ACC didn’t have a tie in with one of the Big 4 back then. In 1990 the tie ins were Rose Big10-PAC10, Sugar SEC-at large, Cotton SWC-at large, Orange Big Eight- at large. Just like today, it was all about the money.
Heck – BYU won the NC in 1982 playing in the Holiday Bowl.

What’s your point macrotech? You come in here every day beating your NC drum. Until we manage to erase 45 years of mediocrity, all the pre-facemask NCs in the world won’t mean squat to anyone but you. If all those pre-modern era titles meant anything Princeton and Yale are the undisputed kings of college football.

BYU’s “championship” was just as shameful as GT’s half title in 1990. By default, being the only undefeated teams in the country, while both played high school schedules.

difference being, the journalists voted on schedule in 1990, while the coaches gave their ballots to their assistants and they voted on record, regardless of competition.

Here’s the read on Iowa (since most of you GT fans seem to know very little): Iowa played a top-25 team that boasts to be one of the FASTEST in the Pac10 in Arizona. The hype going into that game coming from Zona fans was that Iowa was a “slow BigTen team” that couldn’t handle their “speedy athletes”. Iowa fans just kept quiet and sat back and watched Zona struggle to get past the Iowa D all game long. Yes, Arizona players were very fast (much like South Carolina’s in last year’s Outback Bowl), but it turned out that Iowa’s D was not only fast, but very SMART, STRONG and SKILLED.
There is a lot more to winning games then speed, so I do not agree that speed will be a factor. However, Iowa’s weakness at D this year has been stopping a strong running game. Michigan ran the ball consistently against Iowa and their style is similar to GTs in that they do a lot of “draw read” gimmicks to keep the D from committing to filling the gaps. I see GT doing the same thing and picking Iowa’s D apart 5-8 yards at a time. I see GT scoring around 30, similar to Michigan’s performance.
On the offensive side of the ball, I see that GT fans follow media hype more then the games themselves. Iowa’s offense has been banged up badly all year, but they definitely have weapons and are fully capable of putting up points. They will have a fully healthy QB and RBs, along with a near 100% o-line. I think you’re going to see a lot of aggressive play calling as KF knows we will have to be more aggressive than usual to put GT away. I look for the o-line to dominate, and when that happens Iowa’s offense is deadly. If GT can’t stop the run or pressure Stanzi, it’s game over.
Oh, and Iowa fans aren’t all that jazzed about getting GT either. If you look-up bowl stats and program accomplishments, GT is less marquee then Iowa… by far. But I could care less about big names, I like smash-mouth football and I think this match-up will provide PLENTY of that!

No shi$ moron. macrotech go masturbate in front of the NC trophy case and when you____scream 4 NCs at the top of your lungs and see if it erases 30-24, 51-7, or 60-39. Those things get erased by winning in the here and now. We have to beat those mutts on the field and those NCs can’t jump out of the trophy case and do that, now can they.

Iowa’s starting QB has been practicing since last week. The only player that will be questionable is G Dace Richardson, and we have plenty of quality o-linemen to fill in.
I love it when opposing fans label Iowa as “slow” before they have ever seen them play… I just hope GT players have the same misconception.
