Facing the Hawkeyes

It may not have the glitz of the battle of the unbeatens in the Fiesta, but the Orange Bowl will be a great matchup of offense vs. defense: Tech’s o’s vs. Iowa’s x’s. Or is it the other way around?

Either way, it should be fun to watch.

Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz said that he couldn’t remember the last time he faced a team that uses this much option, and that trying to simulate it in practice will be quite a challenge.

The Hawkeyes’ offense isn’t flashy, but with a defense as stout as Iowa’s is, they don’t have to be. A couple of scores here and there is all they need. It’s kind of like Tech’s defense. It doesn’t have to stop everyone all the time, just a couple a game seem to work fine.

Anyway, it’s beena long day so I’ll open it up to your thoughts about the matchup.

As always, follow the AJC’s coverage if Georgia Tech on facebook at http://bit.ly/7QyRsX

Hey BuLLdawg (aka, BuLLFOOL) you were talking about Tech students getting robbed at gun point. Funny you can make fun of a serious situation. But you are a turd anyway, so what would anybody expect. FYI, it was probably some ugag players that did the crimes. Maybe some day you can get you fill of your own stupidity. If you live long enough.

Perfect matchup for the Jackets! We have a chance to(offensively beat a good Iowa program, making our climb for the MNC next year very possible. I have NO delusions that we will give the Hawkeye’s the best chance to have a stellar day on the offensive side of the ball…. I think the offense will have a field day with their defense. There is little or no chance that Iowa has seen anything like what’s going to be in Miami… (offensively) I can only hope that after our win in Miami, that CPJ will make the appropriate changes on the defensive side of the ball.

On a side note, you have to feel sad for BuLLdawg, talking about women’s basketball on a football blog??? What has UGA football come to, that their fans are trash talking about women’s basketball. Jeez, come on BuLldawg, there is always next year!

I haven’t had the opportunity to see any Georgia Tech games this year, but I’ve always had a positive impression of the team, and this season, I felt that Georgia Tech was slighted somewhat in the rankings. From what I understand, GA Tech uses a nice spread offense, similar to Michigan State, and we saw how much trouble Iowa had with Michigan State. This game is an interesting match-up. Iowa has been very successful against SEC teams in bowl games (3-1) but have we even played an ACC team lately? I’m not very familiar with the ACC teams, but I’m pretty sure Iowa hasn’t faced an ACC team in a long time.

Iowa can stack up against anybody. They took Ohio State to the brink and but for a few dropped passes would be undefeated this season. I haven’t watched any of GT’s games, they may be able to boast of similar “what-if’s.” I’ll say this, though – don’t dismiss the Hawkeyes. They’re the kind of the team that gets a lot of mileage out of being underestimated and overlooked. GT has a fantastic coaching staff, and I expect the Jackets to come ready to play, so this isn’t much of a concern in a bowl game, but for you fans in Atlanta, don’t be surprised of Iowa puts up more of a fight than you seem to anticipate. The Hawkeyes also have a fantastic coaching stuff that makes great adjustments to different play styles.

Iowa fans are looking forward to the trip to Florida. I’ve only been to Atlanta once, but I liked the city, and was a Falcons fans for a while when former Iowa receiver Tim Dwight played there in the Super Bowl year. Best of luck all around.

I feel sorry for the Orange bowl. They get the most undeserving BCS conference champion (Tech) and the worse possible at-large team. The good thing is neither of the worthy at-large teams (TCU or Boise) are going to be wasted by having to play Tech. It would have been fun though, watching TCU’s D destroy Tech’s offense. But I’m sure all the other BCS bowls are excited that the Orange gets to take the ratings hit with the trash teams. It means better ratings for them. Oh and, good luck to the ACC champs (UGA) in the Independance bowl.

Sooooooo much bitterness from the UGA fans! The truth, Dawg Gone Truth, GT is the better team this year. Yeah, you guys pulled it out this year, but the bottom line is that GT is becoming a better program than UGA. Your dominance is over, the recruiting battle will begin to even out, and what was once a gimme game for UGA is now very competitive. Sorry, but all this whining about undeserving teams in the Orange Bowl is just pure CRAP! Iowa and GT would beat your team 8 out of 10 times if given the chance.

I can’t help but notice GT is allowed to step out of bounds and yet the ACC officials always turn a blind eye. Tech and I noticed the same thing again Saturday night. Interesting…..

This should be a very interesting matchup. Iowa, like GT, has had a lot of games that could have gone either way, could have won them or could have lost them.

How they prepare for the different offensive style will determine the outcome of the game. GT will have a tough time defensively, just as they have all season. Injuries have really decimated the defensive side of the ball as well as the offensive line.

To all of the UGA fans that feel the need to post such useless drivel on here without any meaningful commentary, keep it up, it is the sincerest form of flattery and we all understand it is posted out of jealousy. To those with mature, meaningful commentary, thank you. May we meet next year that Saturday after Thanksgiving with mutually unstained records.

Back to Iowa, the team actually annoyed me for a while at the beginning of the season with al of the hype they were getting. They seemed to eek out wins at the last second that they may not have deserved. Anyway, good luck to both teams.

“Hmmmmmmmmm”….Your kidding…right? You really think Tech is about to end UGA dominance and level the playing field? Impossible. UGA beat you in a down year when we lost our top 3 offensive players (Stafford, Moreno and Mo Mass). We’ll soon have the best D coordinator that our deep pockets can buy, a 50 million dollar expansion of our (already superior to Tech’s) weightroom and facilities. We are again racking up the state in recruiting….you honestly think PJ can recruit against us? Impossible. We return all 5 starting OLmen that bullwhipped your DL, our 2 RBs that trashed your D for over 300 yards rushing. The best WR/TE combo in the nation (A.J. Green/Orson Charles). If you thought this season was a beatdown, next season will be a true demolishing. You’re only kidding yourself Tech fan. 9-1 my friend….we are pulling away and there’s no way Tech can ever catch us.

@C from Marietta …. I’m with you. The ultimate situation would be for UGA and GT to come into each year’s game undefeated, with Tech winning maybe two out of every three years (until the overall records are more balanced). If we could do that, then there would be a good shot for a team from GA to compete for the MNC every year. At that point, we could (hopefully) do away with all the mindless insults and instead acknowledge that both schools have excellent football programs.

As for the Orange Bowl, my only complaint is that they’ve scheduled it for a TUESDAY night. It would have made traveling much easier if the game were played during the holiday weekend. Nevertheless, I hope we can take a good crowd to Miami and cheer the Jackets to victory.

This matchup is a bit disrespectful to the ACC. How could the ACC commissioner stand for this? You have a conference champion vs. the second or third best team in an overrated conference (Big 10). Big 10 is weaker than usual this year. A win is just a win for GT, but a loss would not go unnoticed.

All the commentators keep mocking GT and saying this is their first MAJOR bowl since 1967. If that’s the case, then how can they claim a National Title from 1990 without playing in a major bowl?

Intellectually, Tech v Iowa will be interesting on a number of fronts.

I’m sure we’ll see a lot more information about Iowa, but while Iowa may think (as so many others have) that they can prepare for this offense and be OK, I will be interested to see any analysis on team speed; if it’s true that Tech has an advantage in team speed, particularly the Tech O v the Iowa D, I think that might be too much for Iowa to simulate in practice.

And if the solutions Iowa finds in practice don’t work, they’ll not have the time or the speed-of-thought to adjust dynamically during the game…which should give CPJ’s ability to adjust on-the-fly a tremendous advantage over the Iowa D.

I am worried about Iowa’s offense v Tech’s D (or lack thereof).

Check out USA Today’s Top 25 Coaches Ballot which shows how each coach ranked the teams.
Particularly, the ACC and SEC coaches. UGA received one vote and finished ranked number 39. Who was the only coach that voted for them? Well, here’s a hint, CMR used to work for him and he just retired. Cutcliffe and Rich Brooks’ votes were interesting, too – no love for the Jackets…
