I have a note about this in tomorrow’s paper, but the loser of the ACC championship game could fall all the way to the Music City Bowl.
I’ll save the details for the print story (which I hope you read), but should the Jackets lose to Clemson, and fall to Nashville, will you go back to Music City for the second time this year?
———-
Also curious to get your thoughts on C.J. Spiller winning both the player of the year, and the offensive player of the year. Seems odd to me that one player can win both, but I don’t make up the rules. Not saying he’s not deserving, but it should be one or the other.
It should be pointed out that he ws second-team running back, and first-team specialist.
I wasn’t surprised that Nesbitt finished second, but I did think he would receive more votes.

What’s odd is the fact a coach that gets hammered in consecutive years by a 5 loss SEC teams wins the Coach of the Year award each of those seasons. hahahahahahahahahaha!!!!

Dwyer won both last year if I remember correctly.
I don’t have a problem with the Player of the Year award going to Spiller, but the Offensive Player of the year should have been someone else. Nesbitt would have been a good choice, so would have Ryan Williams or Dwyer.

BTW, Derrick Morgan winning the ACC Defensive Player of the Year???? Are you kidding????
Where was he when Ealey and King ran for over 300 yards???
Goes to show you how terrible the ACC is. At least Morgan can play in the arena league or CFL. Forget the NFL. Loser

You could say that Ealey and King “Punched” GT’s defensive in the face.

Doug,
It’s clear the ACC has absolutely zero to pick from for their awards. Giving the COTY award to a guy who just lost to a team without their best player, coming off a loss to UK, while having 2 weeks to prepare for them and at home? Come on…..

Johnson was not outcoached.
Remember when Alabama lost to La. Tech the first year that Saban coached there.
In a couple of years when Tech is playing for a national championship and the dogs are playing in the booger eaters clasic in Biloxi against Georgia Southern we will see who is laughing.
Tech was a football team that lost. Georgia was a psycho ward that won. That will not change.
The Music City Bowl will be just fine for Dabo and the whining Clemson putty cats.

Between the two best ACC teams getting dominated by two middle of the road SEC teams, CPJ making a complete fool out of himself with his sourgrape comments, and now the obvious “just close my eyes and point” award selections, this is absolutely sad for the ACC.

The Dawgs will be back next year? Spare me, you’ll have either Aron “no experience” Murray under center or Logan “throw to UF defenders” Gray as your QB. Dawgs will be lucky to be 7-5 again next year, a new D-Coordinator isn’t going to help you that much as they can only scheme for their opponent they don’t actually make the plays. UGAs problem all year was the team played undisciplined defense whether it be giving up the big play or committing stupid penalties.

This is a blatantly false blog article. There is no scenario where GT will fall to the Music City Bowl. First and foremost they would have to lose to Clemson to get it rolling. Then they would have to pass on the Gator Bowl which is assuming VT goes to the Chic Bowl as indicated they will accept. Then they would have to pass on the Champs Bowl.
Notice nowhere is there any mention of the Music City Bowl. Why? Simple. The other bowls can’t select a team more than one position away from the team that qualifys for said bowl. It is in their ACC contract. A team has the option of passing (not the bowl) should that team be available. This is exactly why FSU does not qualify for the Gator Bowl unless all eligible teams above them also pass on the Gator. Thus any ACC team with 4 wins or better is in line for the Gator bowl before FSU. A 3 loss GT at worst is not falling past the Champs Bowl.
I will go you one better. The ACC is already in the works with several conferences and bowl tie-ins to land GT outside the ACC bowls should they lose to Clemson. The Cotton Bowl is one I know for a fact especialy if Nebraska upsets Texas.

ESPN and SI are reporting that in the actual signed contract, the Gator Bowl has a clause where the ACCCG loser does not have to be considered under the 1 loss differential rule. Apparently, that’s only in the ACC media guide. Haven’t seen the actual contracts and such, but that’s what they are reporting. The actual contract says that the Gator does not have to take the ACCCG loser. Not a lawyer but I guess either that simple statement negates the 1 loss rule or the 1 loss rule was never actually signed in a contract. That’s dumb…really dumb. UGA dumb.

Can anyone explain to me how Tech OR Clemson fall below the 3rd pick Gator Bowl when yes, one will be the ACCCG loser but will at the same time still have 2 games over FSU? Is this an “AND” – “OR” argument? Really ACCCG loser or not, 3 teams still have a +2 differential over FSU.

Tech plays in A-She-She Championship Bowl… It was announced today that even after the two best teams in The A-She-She were humiliated by 5 loss SEC teams he Championship game will be held. Loss of interest has caused the sponsors to offer free hot dogs and cokes to anyone who’ll buy a ticket.. It is expected that Clemson will dominate Ga Tech this week due to the slow process of digging their Defensive line and linebackers out of the dirt
Tech is expeced to fall to the music city bowl and lose there also. There are no more patsies on their schedule.

That is what made kicking your azz AGAIN for 8 out of the last 9 years now so SWEET! you play your weak azz acc schedule and beat the ONLY 2 SEC teams that are not bowl eligible…in other words the worst 2 teams in the SEC and think you are all that!
Our worst team in 13 years beat your best team in 10 years! And any way you spin it the acc chumpionship/lip stick on a pig game is TOTALLY irrelevant UNLESS you are a techie or clemson fan!

Truly PATHETIC that you guys somehow “found” your identity by beating GT in the lowly ACC. Every time you boast and post on here about a 6 point win just makes you all look DESPERATE beyond repair. Can’t you even see that for yourselves?!?!

1st the muts won the game. However you have not clue as to how they won. georgia’s defensive had nothing to do with the win, the game was won by the offensive line. Oh yeah, a mediocre ACC team beat the preseason #1 last year at their house…after spotting them 20+. Also, Tech is 5-2 against the SEC for the past 2 yrs.

Listen. UGA played one of its, if not its best game of the year. Few penalties, 1 turnover, limited passing. Tech played fair to average. UGA won. That was probably your best win of the season. Honestly, that doesn’t say much, you won the game. However, you just fired a bunch of coaches. The grass is greener, we’re getting a new coach goes both ways. You have played in the Humanitarian, Emerald, and Champs Sports bowl.

Doug:
A couple items. First, please check NCAA Division I Bylaw 30.9.2.1. It is clear that FSU cannot be taken if GT is available. This is because bowl games that have a conference contract must select a team with at least seven wins – if one is available. Sorry, Coach Bowden.
Second, with all the UGA hate posts here, I think that many of them believe GT won on Sat. Sour grapes from GT? Just read the posts. Sorry, you Dawgs are 7-5 (that feels like Chan Gailey).
Parting shot – Take a close look Dawgs (difficult to concentrate while barking) at the fact that GT had more SEC titles when we left the conference than you did. So, in reality, GT leaving the SEC weakened the conference for you and allowed you to win more with us gone. Sorry, just the facts…you owe us.

You peolple really don’t have lives do you? There’re red & black blogs everywhere (which I leave alone for you to bark over,) yet you can’t read nor understand the directions. Are you lost again over here?? I agree with my friend above…ignore the ignorance.
Now to more important matters. We bring our A game to Tampa (which didn’t show last week even though we still almost won) and we hold Spiller to 2 TDs, then we drink freshly-squeezed in the sun on New Year’s Day before our night game. (It’s irrelevant where the pups will be by then.)
Regardless, our recruiting and rebuilding is on the roll. CPJ in two years has patched together a nationally ranked team with a wide mix of Gailey-era players, running the bubble gum high school triple option which doesn’t even work in Div 1A. This team will be even worse in a couple more years with added recruiting and rebuilding!

“I am not saying that Tech fans are.”
If you ain’t saying Tech fans are classy, I will say it for you. Georgia Tech fans (both of you) are the least classy fans in all of America with a richly deserved history of being in fact the lowest class of B.S. in college football.
As for your statement about Superiority, I do believe Coach Richt is 8-1 against Georgia Tech and that 8 of the 9 years as well, he has enjoyed the higher ranked football team in the Final AP Poll.
Historically, Georgia Tech has had 60 LOSSES put on you by us, more than any other college has inflicted upon any other college in 1-A football, except for 4 other programs.
Tech has had 7 seasons where Tech won -0- games in football all season.
Your conference is a stinking joke.
Your schedule is a hapless wonder of half the games 6 against teams that are not even bowl eligible.
Half your games, cupcakes.
You beat 1 team all season long, and they are ranked ahead of you.
What does that tell you ?
Tech fans have continued the tradition of coming into our blogs and writing nasty stuff.
I am only too happy to reply.
Your statements of Tech superiority in Academics, claiming to be Number 35 in the U.S. News and World Report Rankings of National Universities, is so passé with UGA Number 58. Tech Number 35 is great ? I’ve heard it all now.
I think I will go log onto the Tech blogs again, reading this post from you Ms. T. Get a pair and quit acting like you are somebody. You are nothing but a group of poor losers and even worse winners. You deserve everything you get.
Tech fan hitting an UGA fan in the face, what total B.S. you wimpy nerds. Try growing a pair for a change among any of your Tech fans, and have them come back to where you write your B.S. about your academics of your student-athletes which are among the lowest in the nation, own up to what your record is against UGA in athletics, and own up for saying how you would utterly destroy UGA 6 days ago, not that 1 of you have come back since and offered ANYTHING but excuses the refs cheated for UGA, your QB got injured on a dirty play, Tech felt the game was as important as the Orange Bowl and Conference Chumpionship Game, if not for a couple of funny bounces of the ball on the turnovers, Tech would’ve could’ve should’ve won. Tech is our betch in sports.
When are you going to fire Dave Wommack S Miss linebackers’ coach, now your Defensive Coordinator for him allowing UGA to whoop your butts right up the gut 30-24 ?

In 9 seasons Richt has never fired anyone. Johnson will be firing people after his 3rd season next year after they finish in the middle of the ACC and get trounced by UGA in Athens. What’s funny is you talk about UGA’s decline, yet they managed to bet the best team you guys have had in nearly 20 years in your own house, while you had 2 weeks to prepare with the best player in the stadium on the sidelines. Man that’s gotta hurt.

UGA’s strength of schedule this year, 4th
Yech’s strength of schedule this year, 17th
Since Yech’s defense is clearly worse than UGA’s, and since Tech’s offense doesn’t work against bowl eligible SEC teams with good athletes, it’s safe to say the Bees would have gone 4-8 running UGA’s schedule, at best. Luckily for them, they’re in the worst BCS conference in the country.

Talk about absolutely no substance and totally off-point.
Let’s get back to the subject at hand. Is it too hard for you morons to read the blog topic?
I would like to know exactly what the Gator is required to do and under what circumstances it can do something contrary to its’ contract.
I do not doubt that they do not have to take the loser of the ACC Championship game, but I think there are some overriding factors to that which would require either Clemson or GT, and maybe Miami, to approve of the change.
Either way, I can’t believe FSU is letting this rumor percolate. They should realize that their conference affiliation means more than playing in a bowl closer to home that they do not deserve to play in just to set up a more nostalgic scenario for their retiring head coach who the administration/higher ups hung out to dry earlier in the year. FSU should come out publicly and make the statement that they are flattered by the Gator’s consideration, but that they do not deem it appropriate to jump a more deserving team, especially one that is contractually ties in within the same conference.
Now, thinking that FSU will take the high road might be considered naive, at best, but they should call it a fresh start.
I do not know how they can show up for that game and be proud to play in a game they do not deserve to play in just so that their retiring head coach can play against a team that he formerly coached, a team that will, most likely, send him out on a losing note.

Vegas…man you are funny…Be very careful what you ask for…the weak azz acc would be in serious trouble IF ANY of the bowls could select teams based on who DESERVES to be there!!!!
What is really strange is that the nerd herd does not see this for exactly what it is….there is not a single bowl committee that would invite the techies IF they had a choice!!! That’s right…they do not want you!
And why would they…I mean they have to try to make money to pay the participants…the entire free world knows techies dont pony up and travel…they do not support their team!!!
I mean have you not seen the pic of Altell stadium in Jax. during techs last acc chumpionship appearance…the place was MAYBE 1/4 full..and that is being very generous!
GT sold the FEWEST tickets EVER to a bowl game one of the many years ya’ll played in the blue carpet bowl….241!!!! You simply do not get it….get past 50 miles of downtown Atl. and NO ONE cares about tech football!
If the fact that the loser of the acc chumpionship/lip stick on a pig game will go to the Music City Bowl doesnt put tech football in perspective for you….then you are hopeless!!!
In the meantime after you and the rest of the techies watch Clemson beat your azzes on TV Sat…you know you aint going to pony up and go to Tampa…your sorry azz team’s 43 year streak of NOT going and 53 year streak of NOT winning a major bowl will continue!

OldDawg is correct. The ACC is not only the laughing stock of the regular season, but they’re an even bigger joke come bowl time. They can’t sell out their bowl games and they’re 2-9 in BCS games. I agree that UGA really sucks and that Tech’s loss to them tarnishes the season some.
Who would have thought that this remarkable group of 4-5 star recruiting classes would finally get it together for a complete football game?
Not so remarkable was that after 8 straight wins, Tech was due for a letdown performance, which it had.
Seeing all the UGA posters for this Tech story really shows how pathetic the team and its fans are and the total lack of interest in the dawg program remaining this season.

Makes no difference where you play a bowl game. The only thing that matters is getting into a bowl so you can get the 20 days of practice.

December 3rd, 2009
10:31 am
VegasGT…..There is only one scenario under which FSU could play in the Gator Bowl. All the other qualifying ACC schools(any school that has 4 losses or less) would have to pass on their option when presented the invite. Indeed that could happen but it is not the Gator’s decision. They are contractually bound to the ACC but can use the 3rd ACC pick to choose a team that is within one win of the next qualifying team.
The ACC could work some bowl swaps for teams that would qualify for the Gator to appease those teams and allow FSU to play in the Gator. There is a way to do it but there is no way they can do it if GT loses Saturday and demands to play in the Gator. They could pass on Clemson but not Tech.
I think GT brings their top game and steamrolls Clemson but if the absolutely horrid defense we have can’t hold Clemson and we lose then my guess is GT will opt to play in the Champs Bowl against a pretty good Big Ten team. Under no scenario will GT play in the Music City Bowl. None whatsoever regardless of this blog topic.
Lastly, congrats to the Dogs for winning the game. They were good enough to win when presented the opportunity. No excuses. Excuses are for losers. Georgia deserved to win. Also I would like to add that many UGA fans on here are very correct. The ACC is as weak as I have ever seen it top to bottom. No doubt, but that is not GT’s problem. Every year we go toe to toe with VT, Clemson, Carolina, Miami, and FSU within the conference. 5 of our 8 games in-conference are historically tough. Granted, FSU and Miami are not the powerhouses they use to be but are back on the rise along with Carolina. Throw in the always tough UGA game and a couple of solid games out of conference and GT has a solid schedule year in and year out. The fact the other powerhouses have slipped has hurt the conference but GT can’t be taken to task for that.

It fascinates me how utterly night and day the ACC is compared to the SEC, and they’re relatively in the same region. I know many of the ACC excuse makers like to say it’s because their academic standards are so high, but let’s be honest. The only legit programs that are academically honest in D-IA sports are the academies, Vandy, Duke, Northwestern, Notre Dame and Stanford. There are more than enough thugs to point to in the NBA and NFL that were admitted and played for ACC schools. So that is clearly not the problem. Personally I believe it’s the coaching, from top to bottom, has seriously declined since 2000. Many of the programs in the ACC are able to recruit for themselves, but it’s the coaches that are holding them back. Look at the SEC. They possess easily the 3 best coaches (4 if you wish to include Richt) in the game right now, and many can make cases for Bobby Johnson at Vandy, Nut at Ole Miss and Brookes at UK for holding their own. Heck, Auburn fired their coach last year that any ACC team would love to have. So in my opinion, the coaches in the ACC have to be completely overhauled in order for the conference to compete with the big boys.

I will just say this….. Derick Morgan is a good football player, period. However, he is not a first round pick. First round picks do not get manhandled. Sorry, but IMHO we have NO first rounders, and should have everyone back next year. It should be a better year next year with all the guys coming back on offense and defense.
I am very cautious about prediction a win over Clemson. It should be a close game as their talent is more on the level with ours. Here is hoping for a Defense to show up and a trip to the Orange Bowl… Go Jackets!

Forgot to add, send FSU to Boise. They deserve that. Actually I can make a case that you should have a winning record to go to a bowl. My my my, how the Gator has lost it’s luster. Those fools cry a river anytime Notre Dame isn’t available then are jumping at a chance to put a 6-6 FSU team in their game.
Collegeballfan….to receive an extra 20 days of practice does not legitimize the bowl system. That could easily be put aside in favor of a playoff system. Besides they have spring workouts as well. Never heard of having 20 extra days of practice as any great attribute to going to a bowl game. Very sad. Glad the ACC told them to stick it.
Flagboy….you are correct about the bowls. Actually the bowls are an antiquated system at best and should be incorporated as stepping stones during a playoff system. The BCS is a complete joke. Do you realize that Ohio State played their last game the weekend before Thanksgiving and doesn’t play again until January. Just wow! College Football FBS is great during the regular season/conference championships then becomes the worst sport at the wrong time. Until the college presidents and AD’s see the light and the money a playoff system can generate then the sport will be mired in mediocrity.
Not many fans care about the Chicken Bowl or any other sub-tier bowl. Waiting 4-6 weeks to play a bowl game is a joke. Gives plenty of time to have players “declared ineligible” to boot. Just watch, I guarantee that several bowls will have players not able to play due to academics.

The Gator HAS a provision in their contract with the weak acc (an excape clause if you will) that allows them to by pass the pecking order after the undeserved BCS slot for the acc is filled…look it up!

Reality- the fact that Richt has not fired anyone in 9 seasons may just be what got you a five loss season. Assistant coachs come and go- part of the business. If Johnson replaces any the next few years, should not be a big shock, but it has not happened yet, so what’s your point?

BuzzKiller,
You were desperately trying to equate Richt’s firing of defensive coaches as somehow being a slap at UGA. If you’re knowledgeable at all about UGA’s defense over the years, you’d admit to the annual decline since Martinez took over. If anything this is trouble for Yech and the rest of the SEC. If UGA had their typical defense over the past several years they would have won far more games than they have lost. And yes, you are correct, his lack of letting people go is exactly why we have 5 losses this season, yet we were still able to defeat the best Yech team for the past 19 years.

Olddog- You must be very old and retired to have so much time on your hands that you are so interested in which Bowl Tech is headed for. I can save you the time, assuming we play our A game (unlike what you saw on Sat for sure) they roll over Clemson. Bring your C game and you can lose to an average team, which is what happened on Sat. No excuses, Tech lost. No news there. Play up to capability and its the Orange Bowl (which we have been to several times in the past by the way, also the Sugar, Rose, etc, every major bowl except the Fiesta if you want to get “technical”. Lose to Clemson and its the Gator, despite what FSU and Bowden want.
Remind me where UGA is headed for Christmas- oh yeah Shreveport, LA. I have been there, makes Boise, ID seem exotic and exciting. “Gas up da RV Eunice! I hear da got casinos out thar in Shreveport!” Sure beats Athens!

Reality- like I said, coaches come and go and some succeed and some don’t. Pretty the same as any profession, but shorter life span in big money sports. If you want to play what if- if Tech replaces Chan a few years ago, maybe Tech would have won 10-11 games per year the past several seasons, who know? I agree that UGAs defense has declined the past several years (who doesn’t?) but who hired Martinez? Richt. Correct if I’m wrong, but he is still there and for that we Tech fans are happy. He owned Chan for sure, but he is 1-1 against Johnson, and I like our chances next year and going forward.

Elliot….yep, you are pretty much correct. It starts with coaching and that is the most important ingredient. That and recruiting. Having good assistants to recruit is paramount to success. Take Paul Johnson, the man is crass, doesn’t exude personality, probably isn’t the most well loved coach, but he coaches kids up. Look what he has done with Gailey’s players and I contend he will get his share of players to fit into his system well.
I think Carolina with Butch Davis is solid and moving in the right direction. Carolina was woeful prior to his arrival. Miami is solid too. FSU gets a pass until we see what Fisher brings in. VT is so well-coached they are up there on a scale with the Florida program as far as quality coaches in their system. Friedgen was great as OC at Tech but doesn’t have much to show for it at Maryland.
Bottom line is that many factors play into a school’s success. I certainly would agree that academics should not be the reason for down years or a catch-all. It is a factor but it is tough to balance academics and sports at most schools. That is why players have tutors etc. GT is a tough school with core courses that many players don’t want to take. Got to believe their are similar studies at many schools. I am not playing the academics card at all. I simply stated I thought the ACC was weak this year.
I don’t get all riled up about the games anymore. Just lace up the damn shoes and play and get the best players you can. If the school is floundering then fire the coach because I guarantee that is where it all starts.
The SEC and ACC are fine conferences with good programs. The bantering back and forth and name calling is comical on this and many blogs. I really don’t have any problem with it and I actually pull for Georgia if they aren’t playing GT or VT. Having been to so many Tech/UGA games since the 50’s, I can honestly say that the rivalry is not as meaningful or big as it was when Tech was an SEC member. It also helps a rivalry too if the other team wins a little more. JOhnson should get a few more wins than Gailey (hopefully)because we sure don’t want to get into a VT/UVA type rivalry. Good luck to the Dogs in their bowl game and let’s hope the Jackets make it to the Orange Bowl.

Just one more comment on the common execuse from UGA fans that everything is Willie’s fault, and now that he is gone, its SEC title time- Coaching is only part of the issue- players either perform or they don’t. You will still have the same underperformers (based on “recruiting projections” which are a crap shoot) next year learning a new defensive scheme. I don’t think Meyer, Kiffin, Johnson, or any of the other coaches that UGA will face next year are shaking in their boots quite yet.

I don’t know why anyone degrades Boise. It’s a very beautiful place with very friendly people. The skiing nearby is world class. The blue turf is horrid though.
I read Doug’s article about both the Gator’s and the Champ’s escape clauses. Looks like the loser could be in for a serious shafting.
Let’s just take care of business and beat Clemson. We still control our own destiny as does Clemson.

Tomkitty- if you watched any Tech games this year, the defense has been spotty all year- nothing new. I am more worried about Clemson’s passing than them “running it down our throats”. Key on Sat as it has been all year is if Tech’s offense is rolling, the defense only needs to play decent and Tech wins. I seriously doubt Dabo is learning anything from the UGA game he did not already know.

Vegas- I agree, I would love to go to Boise. I know the Tech players loved the trip a few years ago as several had never seen snow. I think it gets a bad rap because of the blue field (really is bad) and its cold. Everyone knows UGA doesn’t play west of the Miss (until this year- congrats on losing to Okie St who got shut out by a down OU team, have not seen much about that on the blogs?) so they don’t like to mock Boise. Beats Shreveport anytime.

OldDawg….don’t need to look it up. They have an out if they petition the ACC to accept it. The ACC then goes to their teams that are eligible to see if they will pass on the selection. The Gator without petition can pass on a 7 win team to take the 6-win FSU. The Gator is a joke. Why stop with FSU why don’t they just go get the 6-win Notre Dame to play FSU. Has there ever been a bowl game where neither team had a winning record? It’s no wonder the ACC told them to take a hike!

Now I am not saying the ACC isn’t lobbying FSU for the Gator. It could happen but other teams have to approve which I think they will. However, you can take it to the bank the ACC is looking for bowl swaps. I know this to be a solid fact. If GT loses to Clemson(don’t see it) they for certain aren’t going to the Music City Bowl.

BuzzKiller,
Yes, coaches come and go, so now I ask you, your point? Defenses rise and decline, but since Martinez took over theirs has drastically continued to decline each season. There’s no “what-ifs” needed when saying if UGA had their traditional defense last year, they easily beat the Yechers, even with their ACC officials trying to give them the game.
LOL, Tech fans like their chances? Give me a break, Richt O-W-N-S Tech, he’s 8-1 against them. Tech fans pray UGA fires Richt one day, but if he’s able to right the defensive ship, that will never happen.

Hungry Dawg….thanks. Just call it the way I see it. What I saw was Georgia played a better game. If half the UGA posters on here would acknowledge Tech is a very good team it would make their victory that much better. Kind of funny how by tearing Tech down it makes UGA look weaker. Still Georgia is better than their record and they cut down the turnovers which had been losing games for them. Especially the Kentucky game. The Georgia team should be commended for bouncing back from that Kentucky game and playing very well.

UGAy is a DIRTY TEAM that wins, or tries to win, by deliberately injuring Tech’ stars as they did to Nesbitt in 2008 & 2009 & Eddie Lee Ivery in 1978. They live in the gutter with their trailer-trash fans like BuLLdawg, St. Simon, et al, and they richly deserve each other.
