I have a note about this in tomorrow’s paper, but the loser of the ACC championship game could fall all the way to the Music City Bowl.
I’ll save the details for the print story (which I hope you read), but should the Jackets lose to Clemson, and fall to Nashville, will you go back to Music City for the second time this year?
———-
Also curious to get your thoughts on C.J. Spiller winning both the player of the year, and the offensive player of the year. Seems odd to me that one player can win both, but I don’t make up the rules. Not saying he’s not deserving, but it should be one or the other.
It should be pointed out that he ws second-team running back, and first-team specialist.
I wasn’t surprised that Nesbitt finished second, but I did think he would receive more votes.

I agree that UGA really sucks and that Tech’s loss to them tarnishes the season some.
Who would have thought that this remarkable group of 4-5 star recruiting classes would finally get it together for a complete football game?
Not so remarkable was that after 8 straight wins, Tech was due for a letdown performance, which it had.
Seeing all the UGA posters for this Tech story really shows how pathetic the team and its fans are and the total lack of interest in the dawg program remaining this season.

Why doesn’t UGA move to the ACC since they suck so bad in the SEC?
The ACC could trade FSU for UGA – they are so similar hardly anyone would notice.

Makes no difference where you play a bowl game. The only thing that matters is getting into a bowl so you can get the 20 days of practice.
It is like having two spring practices! Why do you think the same teams go year after year? The extra practice time makes for a better team the following fall.

Since 2002, UGA has had only 9 five star recruits. But let the lowly tool fans tell it and every recruit UGA lands is a five star guy. I guess convincing yourself of anything to ease the pain that the best team GT has had in almost 2 decades got their a$$es whooped by a 5 loss SEC team

Great idea,
Unlike Tech, UGA doesn’t tuck tail and run when the going gets tough. Plus, we’ve all seen how high-tailing it out of the SEC has treated the nerds. What, they’re going for their 2nd and a half ACC title now? LOL!!!
oh the irony!!!

How hysterical is this. You have the national championship game (SECCG) being played on Saturday, along with the consolation loser game for 3rd place in the ACC (ACCCG) since UGA won it by beating the ACC’s best and beating the team that beat their 2nd best in SC.

after the BCS championship bowl game, EVERY OTHER BOWL is about who is going to bring in the most money to the bowl and town. Period. The end.
I’m a UGA fan, but seeing tech fall all the way to the Music City (which has a good shot of happening) if they lose the ACC (which i think is not going to happen) would be pretty harsh.
Also think Nesbitt got the shaft. Spiller disappears too much.

VegasGT…..There is only one scenario under which FSU could play in the Gator Bowl. All the other qualifying ACC schools(any school that has 4 losses or less) would have to pass on their option when presented the invite. Indeed that could happen but it is not the Gator’s decision. They are contractually bound to the ACC but can use the 3rd ACC pick to choose a team that is within one win of the next qualifying team.
The ACC could work some bowl swaps for teams that would qualify for the Gator to appease those teams and allow FSU to play in the Gator. There is a way to do it but there is no way they can do it if GT loses Saturday and demands to play in the Gator. They could pass on Clemson but not Tech.
I think GT brings their top game and steamrolls Clemson but if the absolutely horrid defense we have can’t hold Clemson and we lose then my guess is GT will opt to play in the Champs Bowl against a pretty good Big Ten team. Under no scenario will GT play in the Music City Bowl. None whatsoever regardless of this blog topic.
Lastly, congrats to the Dogs for winning the game. They were good enough to win when presented the opportunity. No excuses. Excuses are for losers. Georgia deserved to win. Also I would like to add that many UGA fans on here are very correct. The ACC is as weak as I have ever seen it top to bottom. No doubt, but that is not GT’s problem. Every year we go toe to toe with VT, Clemson, Carolina, Miami, and FSU within the conference. 5 of our 8 games in-conference are historically tough. Granted, FSU and Miami are not the powerhouses they use to be but are back on the rise along with Carolina. Throw in the always tough UGA game and a couple of solid games out of conference and GT has a solid schedule year in and year out. The fact the other powerhouses have slipped has hurt the conference but GT can’t be taken to task for that.

It fascinates me how utterly night and day the ACC is compared to the SEC, and they’re relatively in the same region. I know many of the ACC excuse makers like to say it’s because their academic standards are so high, but let’s be honest. The only legit programs that are academically honest in D-IA sports are the academies, Vandy, Duke, Northwestern, Notre Dame and Stanford. There are more than enough thugs to point to in the NBA and NFL that were admitted and played for ACC schools. So that is clearly not the problem. Personally I believe it’s the coaching, from top to bottom, has seriously declined since 2000. Many of the programs in the ACC are able to recruit for themselves, but it’s the coaches that are holding them back. Look at the SEC. They possess easily the 3 best coaches (4 if you wish to include Richt) in the game right now, and many can make cases for Bobby Johnson at Vandy, Nut at Ole Miss and Brookes at UK for holding their own. Heck, Auburn fired their coach last year that any ACC team would love to have. So in my opinion, the coaches in the ACC have to be completely overhauled in order for the conference to compete with the big boys.

I will just say this….. Derick Morgan is a good football player, period. However, he is not a first round pick. First round picks do not get manhandled. Sorry, but IMHO we have NO first rounders, and should have everyone back next year. It should be a better year next year with all the guys coming back on offense and defense.
I am very cautious about prediction a win over Clemson. It should be a close game as their talent is more on the level with ours. Here is hoping for a Defense to show up and a trip to the Orange Bowl… Go Jackets!

Forgot to add, send FSU to Boise. They deserve that. Actually I can make a case that you should have a winning record to go to a bowl. My my my, how the Gator has lost it’s luster. Those fools cry a river anytime Notre Dame isn’t available then are jumping at a chance to put a 6-6 FSU team in their game.
Collegeballfan….to receive an extra 20 days of practice does not legitimize the bowl system. That could easily be put aside in favor of a playoff system. Besides they have spring workouts as well. Never heard of having 20 extra days of practice as any great attribute to going to a bowl game. Very sad. Glad the ACC told them to stick it.
Flagboy….you are correct about the bowls. Actually the bowls are an antiquated system at best and should be incorporated as stepping stones during a playoff system. The BCS is a complete joke. Do you realize that Ohio State played their last game the weekend before Thanksgiving and doesn’t play again until January. Just wow! College Football FBS is great during the regular season/conference championships then becomes the worst sport at the wrong time. Until the college presidents and AD’s see the light and the money a playoff system can generate then the sport will be mired in mediocrity.
Not many fans care about the Chicken Bowl or any other sub-tier bowl. Waiting 4-6 weeks to play a bowl game is a joke. Gives plenty of time to have players “declared ineligible” to boot. Just watch, I guarantee that several bowls will have players not able to play due to academics.

Reality- the fact that Richt has not fired anyone in 9 seasons may just be what got you a five loss season. Assistant coachs come and go- part of the business. If Johnson replaces any the next few years, should not be a big shock, but it has not happened yet, so what’s your point?

BuzzKiller,
You were desperately trying to equate Richt’s firing of defensive coaches as somehow being a slap at UGA. If you’re knowledgeable at all about UGA’s defense over the years, you’d admit to the annual decline since Martinez took over. If anything this is trouble for Yech and the rest of the SEC. If UGA had their typical defense over the past several years they would have won far more games than they have lost. And yes, you are correct, his lack of letting people go is exactly why we have 5 losses this season, yet we were still able to defeat the best Yech team for the past 19 years.

Olddog- You must be very old and retired to have so much time on your hands that you are so interested in which Bowl Tech is headed for. I can save you the time, assuming we play our A game (unlike what you saw on Sat for sure) they roll over Clemson. Bring your C game and you can lose to an average team, which is what happened on Sat. No excuses, Tech lost. No news there. Play up to capability and its the Orange Bowl (which we have been to several times in the past by the way, also the Sugar, Rose, etc, every major bowl except the Fiesta if you want to get “technical”. Lose to Clemson and its the Gator, despite what FSU and Bowden want.
Remind me where UGA is headed for Christmas- oh yeah Shreveport, LA. I have been there, makes Boise, ID seem exotic and exciting. “Gas up da RV Eunice! I hear da got casinos out thar in Shreveport!” Sure beats Athens!

Reality- like I said, coaches come and go and some succeed and some don’t. Pretty the same as any profession, but shorter life span in big money sports. If you want to play what if- if Tech replaces Chan a few years ago, maybe Tech would have won 10-11 games per year the past several seasons, who know? I agree that UGAs defense has declined the past several years (who doesn’t?) but who hired Martinez? Richt. Correct if I’m wrong, but he is still there and for that we Tech fans are happy. He owned Chan for sure, but he is 1-1 against Johnson, and I like our chances next year and going forward.

Elliot….yep, you are pretty much correct. It starts with coaching and that is the most important ingredient. That and recruiting. Having good assistants to recruit is paramount to success. Take Paul Johnson, the man is crass, doesn’t exude personality, probably isn’t the most well loved coach, but he coaches kids up. Look what he has done with Gailey’s players and I contend he will get his share of players to fit into his system well.
I think Carolina with Butch Davis is solid and moving in the right direction. Carolina was woeful prior to his arrival. Miami is solid too. FSU gets a pass until we see what Fisher brings in. VT is so well-coached they are up there on a scale with the Florida program as far as quality coaches in their system. Friedgen was great as OC at Tech but doesn’t have much to show for it at Maryland.
Bottom line is that many factors play into a school’s success. I certainly would agree that academics should not be the reason for down years or a catch-all. It is a factor but it is tough to balance academics and sports at most schools. That is why players have tutors etc. GT is a tough school with core courses that many players don’t want to take. Got to believe their are similar studies at many schools. I am not playing the academics card at all. I simply stated I thought the ACC was weak this year.
I don’t get all riled up about the games anymore. Just lace up the damn shoes and play and get the best players you can. If the school is floundering then fire the coach because I guarantee that is where it all starts.
The SEC and ACC are fine conferences with good programs. The bantering back and forth and name calling is comical on this and many blogs. I really don’t have any problem with it and I actually pull for Georgia if they aren’t playing GT or VT. Having been to so many Tech/UGA games since the 50’s, I can honestly say that the rivalry is not as meaningful or big as it was when Tech was an SEC member. It also helps a rivalry too if the other team wins a little more. JOhnson should get a few more wins than Gailey (hopefully)because we sure don’t want to get into a VT/UVA type rivalry. Good luck to the Dogs in their bowl game and let’s hope the Jackets make it to the Orange Bowl.

Just one more comment on the common execuse from UGA fans that everything is Willie’s fault, and now that he is gone, its SEC title time- Coaching is only part of the issue- players either perform or they don’t. You will still have the same underperformers (based on “recruiting projections” which are a crap shoot) next year learning a new defensive scheme. I don’t think Meyer, Kiffin, Johnson, or any of the other coaches that UGA will face next year are shaking in their boots quite yet.

I don’t know why anyone degrades Boise. It’s a very beautiful place with very friendly people. The skiing nearby is world class. The blue turf is horrid though.
I read Doug’s article about both the Gator’s and the Champ’s escape clauses. Looks like the loser could be in for a serious shafting.
Let’s just take care of business and beat Clemson. We still control our own destiny as does Clemson.

Tomkitty- if you watched any Tech games this year, the defense has been spotty all year- nothing new. I am more worried about Clemson’s passing than them “running it down our throats”. Key on Sat as it has been all year is if Tech’s offense is rolling, the defense only needs to play decent and Tech wins. I seriously doubt Dabo is learning anything from the UGA game he did not already know.

Vegas- I agree, I would love to go to Boise. I know the Tech players loved the trip a few years ago as several had never seen snow. I think it gets a bad rap because of the blue field (really is bad) and its cold. Everyone knows UGA doesn’t play west of the Miss (until this year- congrats on losing to Okie St who got shut out by a down OU team, have not seen much about that on the blogs?) so they don’t like to mock Boise. Beats Shreveport anytime.

OldDawg….don’t need to look it up. They have an out if they petition the ACC to accept it. The ACC then goes to their teams that are eligible to see if they will pass on the selection. The Gator without petition can pass on a 7 win team to take the 6-win FSU. The Gator is a joke. Why stop with FSU why don’t they just go get the 6-win Notre Dame to play FSU. Has there ever been a bowl game where neither team had a winning record? It’s no wonder the ACC told them to take a hike!

BuzzKiller,
Yes, coaches come and go, so now I ask you, your point? Defenses rise and decline, but since Martinez took over theirs has drastically continued to decline each season. There’s no “what-ifs” needed when saying if UGA had their traditional defense last year, they easily beat the Yechers, even with their ACC officials trying to give them the game.
LOL, Tech fans like their chances? Give me a break, Richt O-W-N-S Tech, he’s 8-1 against them. Tech fans pray UGA fires Richt one day, but if he’s able to right the defensive ship, that will never happen.

If half the UGA posters on here would acknowledge Tech is a very good team it would make their victory that much better. Kind of funny how by tearing Tech down it makes UGA look weaker. Still Georgia is better than their record and they cut down the turnovers which had been losing games for them. Especially the Kentucky game. The Georgia team should be commended for bouncing back from that Kentucky game and playing very well.
