The spread option is coming back to Statesboro.
Georgia Southern has hired Georgia Tech special teams coordinator Jeff Monken to be its next football coach.
Monken said he’s always wanted to be a head coach, and to get the chance to coach at a school like Southern, was too good to pass up.
“Anybody that coaches there realizes that … Ga. Southern is a school that people hold in high regard among FCS schools. The last couple of decades, it’s one of the most successful programs in the country,” Monken said.
“Tremendous to be considered and grateful for the opportunity.”
A press conference will be held in two weeks, after Tech plays in the ACC championship game against Clemson on Dec. 5. Monken said his first priority is to help Tech win the title game. He said he and Johnson will discuss if he’ll stay on after the title game.
“Having worked for coach [Paul] Johnson for 13 years, it’s agonizing to know that I’ll be on a different career path, but it’s a tremendous opportunity.”
Monken has served with Johnson from the time the two were previously at Southern in 1997.
In addition to coaching Tech’s kicking and coverage teams, he’s also coached the A-backs.
The Eagles recently fired coach Chris Hatcher after three seasons and a 18-15 record. Since Johnson led the Eagles to national titles in 1999 and 2000, the school has had four different coaches with the hiring of Monken.
Monken said he will call the plays, unless he hires someone whom he thinks can do it. He said he hopes the find the right priority between being the offensive coordinator and head coach, just as Johnson has done at Tech.
“He does such an outstanding job,” Monken said. “Very unique in his ability to do both and do them so well.”
Monken was contacted by GSU athletic director Sam Baker last week and was later offered the job.
One of the reasons he wanted to become a head coach is because he said wants to have more opportunities to positively affect people.
“Everybody in a program looks to your leadership,” Monken said. “It’s a better opportunity to have a more positive impact on a lot more people.”
As for the type of staff he hopes to hire, and the types of players he hopes to recruit, Monken said he wants high-energy coaches and players who are willing to work hard, be tough, and care about the person beside then, which is what he said Johnson has tried to do.
The Eagles ran a mostly pass-heavy offense last year, led by quarterback Lee Chapple, wh o passed for 1,774 yards and eight touchdowns in a 5-6 season.

before the ugayites get on here and destroy the place just thought it was tacky and tasteless that that junkyard blogger guy was making fun of “all the way turnt up”…if he wants to mock the school, gtaa or fans, alumni that is fine but to make fun at these tech players is redneck at its best. What would he do if GT was on here making fun of his children? They are 20 yr olds trying to fire up the crowd and those videos are awesome and produced by the players themselves. Just lowdown for a AJC employee to be allowed to act like that.

Shame,
It’s called life. People say mean things sometimes, like, TECH SUCKS, or THANK GOD and GREYHOUND for WOMACK. These things happen in life.
You’re worried because they are 20 years old? My gracious get with reality. most modern day 20 year olds have dealt with much worse than what you speak of. Things such as losing at home after two weeks off to prepare and headed into the JV Championship game to a supposed dead program with no real football team to speak of.

Who were those guys wearing red jerseys last night? I don’t think I’ve seen them before? They missed five games this year where their presence would have been helpful.
Don’t anybody worry about the Jackets. They are in good hands. Coach Johnson will have them ready to play next week. There is not a team out there that doesn’t have an off day every once in a while. Yesterday was Georgia Tech’s off day. G.T. fans can be thankful their off day came in a game that did not hurt their ACC standings and didn’t do a lot of damage to their national rankings.

Thank you weak sister conference!
Yard Dawg, you have a choice of playing in a weak sister conference & a BCS #10 or playing in a “strong sister?” conference & being 7 – 5 & being a BCS “others receiving votes”. But if you like the strong sister conference why do you bitch about your coaches? You have want you want.
I believe last night proived that UGA has one of the best set of coaches in the country. Look for no changes in the coaching staff.

Yes, the ACC is a weak football conference but that’s probably because it’s team don’t lead the nation in penalties (UGA) or players arrested in the off season (also UGA). The schools in the conference are also among the best in the world…see Georgia Tech, Duke, Wake Forest, Boston College, etc. The only true academic in the SEC is Vandy and well, we all know about their season.

Georgia Southern made a huge mistake firing Chris Hatcher. The guy coming in to install the option will have to do so with spread offense personnel. Hatcher should have been given at least 4 years to completely install his system. For all you GSU eagles, Adrian Peterson isn’t walking through that door and if he is, he better be able to catch the ball out of the backfield. The GSU president and AD are both idiots!

Secret blessing dawgs won, they get Richt another 5 years and 5 more top 10 classes, and still cannot win the SEC east.
GT is going to win more games in the next 5 years. Hmmm, go Dawgs with no gonads.

I’m a huge GA fan but if you think Paul Johnson is a bad coach you’re in la-la land Everything he has touched has turned gold. Anything related to Paul Johnson is worshiped in Statesboro and I think this is a GREAT hire for the Eagles. It gets their fan base excited and that’s big in a town like Statesboro.

I’ve real all posts by Techies and Dawgs alike. Last night was a great ball game for fans on both sides. A ball game to the end. UGA showed up to play for the first (maybe 2nd) time all year. Tech had off night and during the half a quarter that Nesbitt was hurt, they were in a state of panic. But, all the things that have hurt UGA this year didn’t last night. Instead, the Turnovers hurt Tech. 10 UGA points off Tech TO’s. All that being said as PC as I know how to be, I still hate Tech and love to beat them!

It’s always been said that Tech fans don’t have long memories (or old Tech T-shirts for that matter). Last year, UGA finished with more wins and a higher ranking than Tech. The Dawgs were in the final top ten. Does any Tech fan remember that? I didn’t think so.
And also, UGA could end up in the Peach Bowl. Tech went to the Peach Bowl last year right? Probably chose to forget that as well!

State Champions….Does not matter what bowl or overall record. What counts right now is state champions and it hurts or you all would not be moaning and groaning about it. You had your year of hurling insults and bragging. I guess once ever 9 years is not too bad to hear from you so called fans. Your fan base is so pathetic that you can not even sell your own Div. Enough Said.

Shame- Bill isn’t an employee of the AJC and I didn’t think he was mocking the players was he? He made some cracks about the stadium and some other things, but not the players. In fact, he said he thought it was nice that they showed the faces of the players and that they shared their most beloved memory thus far of being a Jacket. Might want to read that one again…..
And UGAy?? Really? Those of us who win and lose well (which is the majority) need to show some class. Those Tech fans who couldn’t show class over last year has saturated the Dawg blogs with crap so some are just feeling the need to give it back for a bit. Hopefully that will calm down soon.
I really don’t think that the need of change in the DC area @ UGA has been covered up by the win last night. It was a great game indeed, but 7-5 isn’t where a program like UGA needs to be very often. We hope this win and the troubles of this year are a building block for the following years under CMR.
Good luck with Clemson!

GT1990… Get your facts straight. Richt has won or shared the East conference champsionship 3 years, been SEC champs twice and gone to a bowl every year. Been in the top 10 5 times with a overall record of 89-27. Tech can not even compare to that unless you want to talk about all your bowl games which include the Humanitarian and Emerald Bowl. That is low on the totem pole my friend. You have a good coach and a good team but last night you got outcoached and outplayed. You play in a weak conference that never has a dominant team. I think if UGA played Tech’s schedule we would have at least 10 wins if not 11. So before you go running your mouth do some research.
Go Dawgs.

Hey Joe Fan,
Do you really want to start bashing on UGA’s bowl appearance this year? Please! How many BCS Bowl games has your 2nd place GA team gone to? ZERO. You haven’t even beat Clemson yet, so I would keep my pie hole shut. UGA has gone to 3 BCS Bowl games since Richt has gotten there and are 2-1 in BCS Bowls. Where has GA Tech spent their last years in bowl games? Seattle, San Francisco and Boise. The first time you guys actually played your bowl game on New Years, you got humiliated in your hometown by LSU, another SEC team. Give me a freaking break. With your defense, I would be scared to death when someone mentions C.J. Spiller. He will make the Tech defense his bitch just like Ealey and King did last night. I am a UGA graduate and fan and when we beat FL in 2004 and 2007, I didn’t start running my mouth off to FL fans. Do you know why? Because I know UGA has been Florida’s bitch the last 20 years just like GA Tech has been UGA’s bitch for the last 20 years-I mean the last 45 years, since Tech has only beaten UGA 12 times since 1964!!! Paul Johnson is a good coach, but he will NEVER dominate UGA as long as he is at Tech and Richt is at UGA. Johnson was outcoached last night by Richt and even Willie Martinez. He will win his share, but UGA will always have the better athletes and bigger fan base. If I were a Tech fan, I would much rather win the ACC than beat UGA. That is all you guys ever want. As a UGA fan, I will take a loss to Florida every year if it meant winning the SEC instead.
Caleb King just scored again!!!!

GTisstillbetter – We don’t have to convince you that UGA is better because we whipped yall’s butt last night. Just like last year, it doesn’t matter who you think is better.
Regarding the “enjoy the rest of your season” argument, we will. Richt will be happy to take an extra month of practice to get ready for next year.
As for the “no class” chatter, the Tech folks have been on the UGA blogs for the last 12 months acting the same way. You need to realize this is college football in the South, and I don’t care about class. What goes around comes around.

GT1990. your statement is true, but what you left out was that the teams GA plays were in the top 5 in recruiting. So being number 10 ain’t that great when your competition is numbers 1 thru 9.
Dawgs out played Tech hands down. Tech did have a much easier schedule. Tech may have won if they would have thrown some short passing in the second half. Johnson did not adjust. Dawgs lines blew Tech’s lines off the feild. I am surprised that Johnson did not take atvantage of the Dawgs terrible defensive backfield.

St SImons: Go away until next year… GT doesn’t need you…Credit has to be given to UGA last night, and especially their O-line for dominating GT’s D-line. They wanted it more…
GT has to get ready for a more important game now, vs Clemson…18 million dollar payout to the winner of the ACC title game, and I know both schools want it.
At GSU, bring back the option! I want to win again….

LAKE OCONEE DAWG, man I was at the game and not sure we saw the same game. You controlled the ball early and hit some big play on the defense. I think we finished with almost 400 yards offense and lost by 6. One dropped passed one picked up fumble who knows. I thought the two teams played well. Would have loved to have seen if you could have stopped us in that last 1:29 but our #1 receiver will not drop many like that. From what I am hearing from you Wllie should be back. Don’t forget that our #1 QB missed most of the 2nd qtr…no excuses that is football…don’t dial up a beat down.

GSU Eagle 91, we have to live with our idiot fringe but there seems to be more on the other side. On to Tampa and hopefully the run defense will show up.

Lake oconee dog it is Blind and nieve dog fans like you we need to get rid of..Martinez and Bobo coach one good game in two years and you are ready to renew some contracts.Dawg fans that think like you will hold this proud program back for many years to come with no championship to show for it.So if a championship is not your goal why don’t you find another team to root for. I guarantee the majority of the Dawg nation is on my side on this one

Well so long dawggies. I see already that beating the jackets was your season. Not saying I am glad we could make you happy but if that is all you want out of your season, so be it. I always said that beating UGA would make my season but not now, I want to play for Championships, even if it is the lowly ACC. Ha Ha. Hell I did not make these conferences and it is what it is. Go Jackets…nice to be playing on Dec. 5.

Sounds like a great match up between gt and clemson. You guys will essentially be playing for 5th place in the SEC East though. Oh well, as AZ Jacket said: “it is what it is”.

Is this blog about GSU hiring Monken or about the game last night ? Just wondering. There’s plenty of blogs for you Dawgs to bark on and you deserve to, the way your offensive line dominated the line of scrimmage. …. Now, back to the subject at hand. As a GSU alum and former player, I’m very pleased with the hire. Nothing against Hatcher, but he had time to get things rolling. Instead the program was going backwards.
There has been a very vocal uprising, so to speak, against AD Sam Baker in Statesboro and he had to make a move to save his own hide. One way to get the heat off is to give the Eagle fans what they want most of all: a return to the Flexbone offense that won many NC’s. For the above fans saying it’s going to be too difficult to change systems, I say (regardless of last night’s final) look at how fast CPJ turned Tech into a top ten BCS team. Yes, Dawgs, take a look for yourselves..still there. More impressive, is that Georgia Southern literally went to K-Mart and bought a football off of the shelf in 1981 and by 1986, had two National Championships. I’m proud to have been a part of that remarkable story.
Back to the hire.. Yes, It will take Monken a while to adjust personel, but he has been by CPJ’s side for a long time and the folks in Statesboro can’t wait to see the Flexbone back on the banks of Beautiful Eagle Creek; it’s birthplace. Paulson Stadium should be a fun place to be again in the near future.
GO EAGLES ! GO JACKETS ! (Yes, the loss stings, but GT is still on the way up) Now, you Dawgs may continue with the barking.

Last time I checked CMR has 2 sec titles, and yes it is always our goal to win the sec. Goals change as a season progresses as GT’s goals are about to change. You are not state champs so no you have to try and be ACC champs.Spiller gets his invite to NY by thrashing GT and your goals change again to just win one out of your last three games.

THIS IS ABOUT GEORGIA SOUTHERN- NOT THE GAME LAST NIGHT!
Very excited to see the triple option coming back! If GT can be successful with the personeel that they had last year moving to the option, the same can be said of Georgia Southern. It may be a tough year or two at the most, but we will be better for it- BACK TO DOMINATION!
Hatcher really disappointed me in his time in Statesboro. I wish him well and wish our new coach the best of luck. Go Eagles!

Thanks John for the history lesson. I wonder how the insects would have fared againts the Dawgs schedule this year. BTW: While I’m glad order has been restored and we beat the bugs this year. I’m certainly not expecting CMR to have rings made to celebrate the victory.

CPA, In defense of the rings you mention, I believe there was a guy by the name of Therron Sapp who is immortalized in UGA lore and had his number retired primarily for one single play. A score that ended GT’s streak of 8 against the Jackets. Sorry for venturing off the blog topic, but since you were metioning history lessons.

I think tech has a better offense than uga this year, but your defense couldn’t stop the run, simple as that.
