Another big day for Jonathan Dwyer, a gutsy call by Coach Paul Johnson and the Jackets live to fight another day. Let’s see how that tense nail-biter affected the record books.
Rushing Records
Most rushes in a season
Name Rushes Year
1. Tashard Choice 297 2006
2. P.J. Daniels 283 2003

9. C.J. Williams 245 1995
10 Josh Nesbitt 209 2009
11. Lenny Snow 202 1966
Josh Nesbitt is officially the first quarterback in Tech history to be in the top 10 for rushes in a season. With a paltry 10 carries a game between the regular and postseason, Nesbitt should end up around eight on the all-time list.

Name Rushes Career

10. Jonathan Dwyer 451 2007-
11. Lenny Snow 445 1965-67
13. Josh Nesbitt 434 2007-
Dwyer’s second straight huge game put him at 10th on the career rushes list.
He’ll need about 11 carries in the next four games to unseat Reggie Ball.
Nesbitt will need about 15 carries a game to end up on the top 10.

10. C.J. Williams 1138 2009
NR Jonathan Dwyer 1093 2009
NR Josh Nesbitt 817 2009
Dwyer is knocking on C.J. Williams’ door. He should easily pass Williams to be the second player to have two top ten seasons running the ball. Believe it or not, Dwayer could surpass last year’s numbers with a strong finish in 2009.
Nesbitt is still creeping up the list. With the post-season it’s likely he’ll be the first quarterback to make the top ten rushing yards list.

9. David Sims 2274 1974-76
10. Wililam Bell 2026 1989-93
15. Josh Nesbitt 1849 2007-
Dwyer is staying steady at six this week on the career rushing list. He keeps it up and he’ll pass P.J. Daniela and Tashard Choice.
Nesbitt is creeping up on William Bell’s 10th spot on the career rushing list. With the postseason, it’s possible he’ll make it.
Most rushing touchdowns, season

6. C.J. Williams 12 1995
6. Lenny Snow 12 1966
10. Tony Hollings 11 2002
This year, Nesbitt scored more touchdowns than anyone in Tech history except for Robert Lavette’s 1982 season.
With four games likely to go thanks to the postseason, Nesbitt could very easily end up with more touchdowns in a single season then Lavette.
Most Rushing Touchdowns, Career

9. David Sims 21 1974-76
10. C.J. Williams 20 1994-96
11. Shawn Jones 19 1989-92
Dwyer’s one more touchdown from tying Joe Burns for number two on the career rushing touchdown list.
Similarly, Nesbitt is one more end zone run away from being in the top five. It’s amazing what these two have been able to accomplish in their careers at Tech. Notice that only Eddie Lee Ivery and David Sims also have overlapping careers on the list.

A steady day on the field moved Thomas up to ninth on the receiving yards in a season list. He likely will end up anywhere between 2 and 8 before the year is done.
If Thomas averages 48 yards a game the rest of the way, he’ll also end up in the top four for most receiving yards in a season.

Again, let’s beat Dook first, the Muttlanders next, and THEN worry about the last two. Records, rankings, and respect will then follow.

Pi$$onaDawg, I like everything you’re saying on here….with one exception; it’s a shame that Dwyer isn’t getting recognized in the, ever ellusive award NAMED for a Tech coach…let him get over the 200 yard mark!!! I know CPJ doesn’t call plays like that…but, it would be nice to get Dwyer on the top five list!!! Either way….GO TECH!!!

Please help me understand why there is a very quiet shift in GT’s bowl projections among the national sports writers (Sporting News, ESPN, et al…). Last week, Tech was slated in the Orange Bowl, this week its the Champs Sports Bowl. No reasons given – although I would think that the possibility of a #7 team losing to either an unranked Duke or Clemson would generate some discussion. This is odd and verging on Area 51 and Grassy Knoll territory, know what I mean?

can someone PLEASE explain to me how jonathan dwyer has not been mentioned in ANY heisman conversations?…let’s go through a list of facts: 1. Dwyer is the reigning ACC player of the year. 2. Dwyer was picked as the preseason ACC player of the year. 3. Dwyer was a presason FIRST TEAM ALL-AMERICAN. 4. These accolades were based on his numbers from last year. 5. Dwyer is having a BETTER season this year. 6. Dwyer’s team is also having a better season this year (and we all know team success is at least half of the heisman battle). 7. He has done all this despite having a HUGE target on his back coming into the season…all that said, how has he gone a from a preseason heisan candidate to not being mentioned when he and his team are playing BETTER this year than last?…i do not understand…doug, what do you think?

I think there’s a perception that Dwyer “started slow” this season. I’m not saying it’s true, and even if it is true I don’t think it should matter considering what he’s done lately. Heisman hype is a fragile thing; it can get broken in a hurry. I think that’s what has happened with Dwyer.
And while I agree somewhat with the folks who are saying Beat Duke, nothing else matters, we’re the fans. We can look ahead, we can look to individual statistics, etc. You can bet the coaches aren’t doing that, and the players better not — but we’re fans in the blogosphere, whose opinions and attitudes don’t lose games.

we have beaten Clempson 4 straight times (2 at Clemson) but the experts only seem to remember the last time and now they (Tigers) walk on water and poor little GT cannot play against them…how do you go 9 and 1 without finding a way to win? Did CPJ just get weak and stupid all of a sudden? Even that idiot on ESPN.com has Clemson already in the Orange Bowl. The ACC writer on ESPN.com also says CPJ is arrogant. What does she think she is besides being an idiot? Good, I hope CPJ just fires the team up that much more with this information. Idiot sports analyst

Dwyer isn’t getting more love because of two things:
1. the performance against Miami on national TV
2. people think he’s a product of the the system.
As for Tech’s bowl projection, they are slotted in the Champs bowl because folks thin they will lose to Clemson in ACC title game.
Heather doesn’t hate GT, or CPJ. She’s just giving her opinion. Heather’s good people.

Tech can’t just show up & beat Clemson, much less Duke or UGA. Yes, we’ve improved, but so have the Tigers. Beating them a second time will be hard. We got several breaks the first time.
Dwyer is a long-shot for the Heisman for several reasons. The ACC is down, competitively. Dwyer plays in a run-oriented system. Nesbitt almost has a better shot, but Teabow’s stats are slightly better, against better overall competition…and his team is undefeated. Still, the media is looking for alternatives to the choir-boy.
I love Tech, but let’s not look at things through rose-colored glasses.

ShameonEspn.com-your name should be shame on Heather Dinch. All the big experts like Schlabach and Feldman still have GT in the Orange Bowl. The only one I have seen pick clemson is Heather. And, then a day later she comes out with ACC Power Rankings and GT is #1 and clemson is #4. Nothing new though she hates GT and rarely makes sense.
BobinBuford- Heather never actually said CPJ was arrogant. She said he tends to lean toward the arrogant side because of how confident he is. But really who cares if he is arrogant. He wins football games.
Marietta Dawg- Sorry they don’t give out free cokes anymore. What they do now is hand out new jokes for UGA fans that come on here and showcase a team that is 9-1 and top ten in the BCS. But come on down I bet we could atleast get u some new tires to put on the mobile home.

There are a number of reasons why JD is not listed among the top candidates for the Heisman. Here are a few:
1. The “big game” on the national stage was against Miami, and as we know, that was both Dwyer’s and Tech’s worst game of the season.
2. While JD’s rushing stats are comparable to Mark Ingram, his receiving stats are virtually nonexistent this year.
3. Nesbitt’s performance this season has, in effect, “split the Tech vote”. It’s hard to push someone for the Heisman when they might not even by the most valuable player on their own team.
4. While Dwyer’s performance in the last two weeks has been outstanding, it is perceived to be against “weaker” opponents from their respective conferences.
I get the feeling that personal awards and recognition are not the radar screen for this team. CPJ has done a good job of keeping the team (and the fans) focused on each individual game. Continuously repeating such phrases as “we haven’t done anything yet” or “each week is a single elimination situation” have reminded us that we haven’t yet “arrived” at anything significant. With that said, winning the Duke game will allow this team to accomplish its first significant goal … winning the Coastal Division championship outright. Two weeks later we can accomplish the second significant goal … repeating last year’s victory over the Dogs. Finally, a win in the ACCCG in Tampa will allow this group to achieve yet another important objective. Unfortunately, a loss to Duke this weekend would put a huge damper on the whole season, so it’s critical that we take one game at a time and BEAT DUKE!

William Bell played for the Washington Redskins. He mostly returned kickoffs. I saw him in Washington when the played the Oakland Raiders. Ahhh the good ole’ days. What a run he had in the NC game against Nebraska. I still break out the tape of the game every once in a while. However, it will never be the same as being there like I was!!! I remember seeing an RV with part of the goal post strapped to the top of it going by us on the highway back to Atlanta while listening to see how the coaches voted.
