I played this game on my facebook page a few weeks ago (yes, that was a shameless plug, it’s AJC Ga. Tech).
I’m going to give you the stats of two players. You tell me whose stats are who’s:
Player A: 175 carries, 1,148 yards, 8 TDs, 5 100-plus games
Player B: 169 carries, 1,093 yards, 9 Tds, 5 100-plus games
One of these players is a Heisman candidate. One’s not.
So, can you tell me who are the players, and which one is the Heisman candidate?

Do you know who the players are?
Player A, is Alabama’s Mark Ingram, arguably the front-runner for the Heisman Trophy.
Player B, is, you guessed it, Jonathan Dwyer.
I wrote last week that Dwyer was quietly putting together a season that surpassed last year’s, when he was named the ACC’s player of the year.Turns out, he could have better stats than the dude who may win the Heisman.
This is in line with this other comparitive stat line:
Tim Tebow
155 rushes, 578 yards, 9 TDs
114-173-4 passing, 1,531 yards, 11 TDs
Josh Nesbitt
209 rushes, 817 yards, 15 TDs

Nesbitt could have better stats than Tebow by the time it’s done.

Doug: Thank you for the excellent article about Sedric Griffin. There was no place to comment under the Griffin article, so I’m posting this under your most recent blog entry.
Thorough job on that piece. Even though the focus was on Sed and his family, I liked the way you worked in the quotes from CPJ on Sed’s development as a person, and the cameo references to Tongo and Reese. Nice read.
Back to this blog entry, yeah, I think the Yellow Jacket family recognizes that even the most stellar performers in the spread option attack most likely will have their performances dismissed by the so-called pundits as being products of a gimmicky system.
That’ll change after the Yellow Jackets bring home the crystal football from a MNC. But for now, guys like Dwyer (Heisman candidate 2009), BeBe (Biletnikoff candidate 2009), and Nesbitt (Heisman candidate 2010) will need to focus on team accomplishments rather than individual awards, which is the way it should be anyway.

Here’s the most interesting thing about the Dwyer-Ingram comparson:
Dwyer’s done it on fewer carries, so the “it’s the system” argument doesn’t hold a lot of water.

These numbers are surprising!!! If Dwyer has the kind of games he’s had these past two….these numbers COULD get sick!!! One thing learned from CPJ’s demeanor is that he’s not going to ’showcase’ a player…Tech keeps winning and the nation will HAVE to notice the players within the team! I don’t agree that the ‘gimmicky’ offense is to blame….Tech has been under the radar for a LONG time….smile, the cameras are beginning to aim our way!!! LIGHTS! CAMERA! ACTION!!! GO TECH!!!

Something that you need to remember about the stats for GT players is that Tech has played one more game than pretty much every other team in the country. So if you’re trying to make an argument based on cumulative stats, remember that we’ve got a game’s advantage. So Dwyer really isn’t as close in total stats as he looks.
And Dwyer isn’t coming back next year. But wish him well anyway, and have faith in the guys backing him up and the system in which he has thrived. I know Dwyer is an incredible talent, but someone ought to be able to step right in and accomplish nearly as much, all the while presenting more opportunities (touches) for our other backs on the perimeter.

Until Georgia Tech wins the ACC Championship and a big bowl game, the media will always downplay the accomplishments of this team and its unique triple option offense. But that’s okay. We need to get it done on the field.

Two more things hurt Dwyer: First, you’d probably get Tech fans split half and half as to whether he or Nesbitt is more important to the team. No way a guy wins the Heisman when he’s not even his team’s MVP. And second, the bulk of his damage has been done in our less important games. Miami, VT, Clemson all more or less held him in check (Miami especially, thanks to that shoulder stinger). So when he’s been on the national stage, people have seen lackluster performances.
Contrast that with Mark Ingram, who has completely carried the Alabama offense when it has been struggling. He reminds me a little bit of a poor man’s Herschel Walker, where his team keeps winning with strong defense and no passing game, just because teams can’t stop him on the ground.
PS – I love Dwyer and would be ecstatic if he were in the thick of the Heisman debate. But he just hasn’t done this year what he’s needed to do.

The only thing Ingram has on Dwyer that I can see is that Alabama has a higher rated strength of schedule. But if anything, the fact we run it more should give MORE credit to Dwyer since the defense can key on him more easily. It’s a joke and discredit to the pundits that Dwyer hasn’t gotten more attention.

Doug, why don’t you write a blurb about the report that just came out regarding FBS Coaches’ salaries?
Here’s an interesting angle: I noticed in my brief perusal that Paul Johnson’s contract stipulates that he can earn over $1 million extra per year based on performance incentives. The interesting part is that $200K could come from his team’s academic performance. I didn’t look at a huge number of the contracts, but I didn’t see many that listed academic performance bonuses, and none came close to the earning power that his do.

TechMD: It isn’t true that teams can key on Dwyer more than they can Ingram. Unlike Bama, just because Tech is running the ball doesn’t mean everyone can go after Dwyer. The whole point of our offense is that any one of 6 different guys could end up actually running the ball. A third of the time, it’s Dwyer; a third of the time, it’s Nesbitt; and the last third is split up among the A-backs and receivers. Meanwhile, when it’s apparent that Bama is running it, everyone can just run after Ingram, because he gets the ball 95% of the running plays where he’s on the field.

Revealing statistics. Just another inequity in the system. Personally, I believe that the Heisman has become meaningless. The talking heads on ESPN and the networks have too much influence in the decision. It seems that the highly subjective criteria for winning the award changes from year to year. One year, it’s all about whoever had the best year THAT year. The next year, it’s supposedly about the total body of work. It’s revealing to look back over the last 10-15 years and see how many Heisman winners went on to any significant level of success at the next level. If the winner is supposed to be the best player in college football, you would expect a higher success rate.

Dwyer really should be getting some mention in the Heisman race, but several of the factors mentioned above really do contribute. I think Dwyer not being a factor in the Miami game really knocked him off the media’s radar early in the season. Then, for the next four games it was Josh Nesbitt who was the big producer for Tech’s offense.
It is always hard for a player to contend for the Heisman if he shares the spotlight with a teammate. The guys who end up winning it generally are players that have their entire offense build around them. So, Mark Ingram rising to the top of the Heisman hopefuls is as much about how nothing else for the Bama offense is working except for him.
Also, I hate to agree with Blago, but Dwyer isn’t coming back next year. It would be great to have him for all four years, but the NFL is going to throw a ton of money at him and after what happened to Sam Bradford this year I expect to see a lot more juniors make the jump and not stick around.

Doug, I mean to write something comparing his contract to every other FBS coach. Heather Dinich over at ESPN mentioned it, comparing all the ACC coaches. I just thought it was particularly interesting about the fact that Johnson can make so much money for actually graduating his players instead of just winning championships. (He can also earn plenty for that stuff too, mind you)

TechMD: I’m not saying that they don’t key on Dwyer. I’m saying that they don’t key on him any more than they do on Ingram. I’d venture to say they do it a little less. When a team is playing Alabama, once it’s apparent that Bama is running it, every defensive player can completely ignore the quarterback and just be concerned with getting blocked by one of the receivers or tight end.
When a team is playing GT, on every play, one player HAS to stay keyed on Nesbitt, and one HAS to stay keyed on the pitch man. Dwyer gets his fair share of attention too, but those are two fewer players available to tackle him.

Look Doug. Let us go 13-1 and win the Orange Bowl and bring back Josh and the Diesel next year. Then we can start to amp up any potential Heisman candidacies. In a sneaky way, if Ingram wins the Heisman this year – which would be Bama’s first – there might be more of a look on the part of the media for other traditional top programs that have never had a winner. Add to that we will be going to Kansas next fall (with the chance that Josh and the Diesel get a chance to impress some Big 12-area voters with an early look at them) and we might have a chance at two finalists next year in New York.

I get your point Blago but as last year’s ACC player of the year, and the fact that he usually is the one going up the middle makes Dwyer the first guy they focus on and try to stop. Nesbitt can pitch but he has to go through traffic.
BTW, I hope we keep it on the ground the whole first half if possible. Chew up clock, get a lead and keep it out of Lewis’s hands.

Dream on hes playing with Chan Galeys recruits. And when he plays the big boys of the SEC and the Big 12 they have to much team speed for that boring offense…Example LSU last years bowl game. The Dude: That’s pretty much what I’m saying. Also that other stuff about him “not showing up” in bigger games and having an equally important (to the team) teammate.
Todd: We all greatly appreciate your insight. You also keep us grounded to the reality that even one of the most talented teams in the country can stumble out of the gate, keep stumbling, be 4-4 after 8 games, and have a puncher’s chance at an outright losing season.

I totally disagree with anyone that says defenses haven’t keyed in on Dwyer. For the first 6 games of the year, that’s all they did. That’s why Nes and the pitchman had so much success. Now that’s shifted back outside and Dwyer is getting his.
My hope is that Dwyer stays for one more year. I think there’s a few reasons this could happen. 1) This was a very tight recruiting class that might want to finish together, 2) 1 more good year could mean a top 5 draft pick for Dwyer as opposed to top 30, 3) the opportunity to win a national championship next year, and 4) 1 more good year puts him at No 1 in all the record books at Tech. It’s hoping more than fact at this point though.
It’s weird that he’s the best player on the team, but he’s probably the guy we could afford to lose most with Allen, Lyons, and Cox coming back.

I have to tell ya that I agree that the money is gonna be huge and the temptation great….but I believe to play for a National Championship in 2010 for THAT coach is going to trump all of the above. Claiming that Paul Johnson’s success is because he’s playing with Chan Gailey’s recruits has to be the stupidest comment yet. If Gailey’s recruits were so great, why didn’t Chan succeed the way Paul does? The scary truth for you detractors is that Paul will only get BETTER when he has his own recruits that are better fit for his system. The fact that he’s able to win so quickly is a tribute to the fact that he’s an excellent COACH (notice the emphasis on the word COACH). Gailey showed a lack of abilty to help his recruits improve their skills during their time under his system. Johnson’s players continue to improve game after game and year after year.

I really enjoy reading these blogs given Tech’s success this year (even the idiotic UGA fans’ comments). A couple of thoughts:
1. In the WF game Tech had a good rythym early with the running game on track, then they went to the air numerous times and lost it. Has PJ made any comments on this since the game? It seems if we had stuck to our formula the final score would not have been close.
2. I’ve heard several comments on this blog about Dwyer foregoing his senior year. Is this just rumor or is there substance behind it?

The NFL money is noit going away. Dwyer could be Stafford and go for the check, but look who you get to play for that money. NoShow got lucky so to speak. Denver took a Dawg because of the past Draft pick RB they got from UGA. NoShow will do well but never be what he could have been after this years Draft and stay South.

When Josh Nesbitt and Jonathan Dwyer are gone you are going to see a huge drop off gtne80. Nesbitt has been the straw that stirs the drink this year. Without Nesbitt Tech probably goes 6-6 or 7-5.
