Tech No. 7 in BCS

A few tidbits so far today:

Tech is up to No. 7 in the BCS, AP and coaches poll. The Associated Press crowns its own champion. The coaches’ poll is a component of the BCS standings.

——

Saturday’s game against Duke will kick off at noon.

——-

Heather Dinich of ESPN.com is picking Clemson to beat Georgia Tech in the ACC championship game. I know this, it’s going to be a heck of a game.

——

There’s still a shot Tech could play in national title game.

Florida would have to beat Alabama in SEC championship game. Texas would have to lose, likely to Texas A&M. Cincinnati could lose to either West Virginia or Pittsburgh.

Then, Tech would have to hope that wins over Duke, Georgia and Clemson would give it enough points to leapfrog unbeatens TCU and Boise State.

And beating Clemson again will be no easy task.

Before we go worrying about any conference championship game, I believe we have a game next Saturday that is pretty important.

There is no question that Tech should win, but Wallace-Wade stadium will be 3/4 empty for a noon kickoff next week. There is typically no energy in the stadium and it is not unheard of for teams to struggle getting fired up to play because the atmosphere is so laid back.

Let’s worry about the ACC championship in a couple of weeks.

As for Heather Dinich, she has consistently underrated Georgia Tech all season. She seems like a very dedicated reporter and I don’t think it is a personal bias, but she just doesn’t seem like she thinks Dwyer, Nesbitt and company are legit. Apparently, Tech is going to have to win their next four games before she believes this team is capable.

Duke has scared the hell out me for the last month and a half. Their passing attack could exploit our defensive weakness as as much as any team in the country. We should be able to rack enough points to win in a shoot out, but you can’t under estimate just how badly we need a week off.

In golf it’s call getting a read, in football we have tapes and we have the tape of NC doing a number on Lewis and the Duke offense. We should win but the Wake game has dimmed my exuberance. I’ll settle for just a win. we’ll worry about UGA and the ACC game later..The bye week will give our beaten up defense a chance to heal.

clemson scares me. It would be a huge letdown to lose the ACCCG and not make a BCS game. They’re the only team so far in the ACC that both years have really given our offense trouble (although CPJ has still beaten them both times). We got a couple breaks to win the first time in bobby dodd so it will be tough.

UGA will probably be similar to last year but i think we win this one by 10 instead of 3 as we did last year

Only 113 days till the Tech beat down in Atlanta. Its posted in the locker room at Georgia…beware Tech fans its gonna hurt so bad you won’t be able to show your faces. Tech always has been and will continue to be a second tier college football program. I’ll bet you that there will be more Dawg fans at Grant Field than Tech fans for the game. Isn’t it amazing that Tech consistently is out recruited by not only Georgia but also Clemson, Tennessee, South Carolina, Auburn and more recently Alabama in its own state? That fact alone should tell you that the Tech program is not thought of very highly throughout the South. Have your childish fun now Tech fans posting on this blog cause after this year’s game Tech will be back in its rightful place….irrelavant in college football!

And you’re telling me I give Georgia bloggers a bad name….stop I’m really laughing hard now. Come see me when you win the ACC…or a BCS game…or sell out your stadium for a home game. Are you kidding me. Tech wasn’t even a consensus NC winner in 1990. The poll that mattered didn’t have Tech #1.You asked if you are supposed to be scared by my rhetoric…..I really don’t care. All I do is state the facts. Just because you Tech fans live in a dream world and interpret them the way that makes you feel better about yourselves is your problem. Believe me your team is not that good. Average at best. Tech will not win the ACC, and definitely WILL NOT beat Georgia. In looking at the Tech schedule…I see Tech losing at least five games and possibly six. I predict that Tech will lose to Georgia by at least 17 points……Tech is a team that actually dropped out of the SEC because they thought they were better than everyone else and where did it get Tech?…relegated to a second tier team in the ACC. When Tech consistently has double digit win seasons, wins the ACC, and plays in meaningful BCS bowl games you’ll be able to pound your chest and tell me and everyone else that will listen how great Tech is until then….the Tech football program is irrelevant!

I don’t know what the he!! Dinnich is smoking. I really don’t like the fact that she rails on GT so much. Every week it’s the same old same old – someone else is going to beat us. I think she is an x’s / o’s or level of talent kind of reporter. As such, she thinks Clemson has a chance (assuming we beat Duke). She doesn’t realize that CPJ and this GT team are just simply winners. Knowing how to win is probably more important than knowing how to pass. Some teams just have it. UF hasn’t really played a great game all year, yet they’ve won every game. That’s what makes teams special.

GA Tech Insider

November 8th, 2009
8:00 pm

I just saw this posted on one of the GA Tech boards:

Starting with GA Tech’s game against Mississippi State, when the defense gave up 14 points in the second half after giving up 17 in the first half, our defense began to make some clear improvements, for the most part, in every game the Jackets have played in the second half of every game since then.

Against FSU, the defense only gave up 10 points in the second half of the game after giving up 34 in the first half.

Against Virginia, the defense gave up 3 points in the second half after giving up 6 in the first half.

Against Vanderbilt, the defense gave up 3 points in the second half after giving up 28 in the first half.

Against Wake Forest, the defense gave up 7 points in regulation after giving up 17 in the first half.

The only exception is the game against Virginia Tech, which scored 20 points in the second half after scoring 3 in the first half.

They threw in some National statistics of some of the teams GA Tech has played that I found interesting:

Passing Offense

Florida State is ranked 10th

Wake Forest is ranked 27th

Miami is ranked 28th

Passing Efficiency

Miami is Ranked 15th

Florida State is ranked 23rd

Wake Forest is ranked 25th

Virginia Tech is ranked 27th

Rushing Offense

Mississippi State is 12th

Virginia Tech is ranked 21st

Scoring Offense

Miami is ranked 21st

Clemson is ranked 25th

Florida State is ranked 29th

Total Offense

Florida State is ranked 20th

The point was that GA Tech’s defense has been playing some pretty “decent” offenses so far, in particular, in the passing game, and that the second half adjustments seem to really helped out..

GTfan11

We seem to forget how porous our defense has been at least against the pass. Duke and ga seem fairly proficient in that. If either muster up a defensive stop or 2 we could be looking at 11-2 or God forbid 9-3 and no trip to the ACC championship. I think playing against Florida is a REAL stretch. Let’s be realistic

For everyone who keeps saying, “Tech has no defense or special teams” and “Wake moved the ball at will against GT”, you need to look at the numbers:

WF – 28 yards on 25 rushes yesterday.
WF – The BEST PASSER in WF school history was 26 of 40 for 263 yds.
WF – 28 Return Yards in 4 quarters.

Check the FACTS before you make assumptions…Those are pretty decent stats!!

GA Tech Insider

I would also like to add to all of you slamming the GA Tech defense:

Wake Forest put up 555 yards of total offense against Miami the week before they played GA Tech this past weekend, and that was with Riley Skinner getting hurt I might add, and when they left Atlanta after playing our Jacket defense, they had only put up about 290 yards of total offense, with Skinner playing the entire game, INCLUDING overtime.

Now I’m not so much good with numbers any more, but I’d say that our defense holding Wake’s offense to 290 yards is just under twice as good as Miami’s defense, which everyone seems to think is so much superior to the Jacket’s right now.

In fact, as the season is wearing on, outside the first half against Vanderbilt (and let’s take away the kickoff return for the touchdown), the defense seems to be improving. Saturday afternoon’s game against Duke will be tough, with their prolific passing game, averaging over 300 yards per game; but knowing that Duke only rushes for about 70 yards per game can help the defense prepare for a more one dimensional game plan, like they did the second half against FSU, Virginia, Vandy, and Wake Forest.

I can assure you that Paul Johnson, his coaching staff, and the team aren’t taking the Duke Blue Devils lightly this coming weekend, and as many of you may have heard, the mantra has been, the most important game of the year is the next one. One of the main goals of the season is within reach – the Coastal Division crown. That’s all the guys are focused on right now. If they can get by Duke, they’ll finally get a well deserved break in their schedule before they have to play the Georgia Bulldogs. But that break won’t come until after 4 PM on Saturday afternoon in Durham.

Funny thing about HD on ESPN, she picked GT to lose to VT and to UVA. Then last week she (on an ACC blog, not a Pac10 blog mind you) went to great lengths to prove Oregon was the best one-loss team, not GT.

I suppose it’s best for GT if HD keeps up her doubting – seems to be working out OK.

“Anyone who doubts the credibility of Johnson’s offense needs to check his own credibility, because Bud Foster is one of the best defensive coordinators in the country, and no matter how much he preaches assignment football to his players, it’s up to them to execute. Virginia Tech’s defense is struggling to do that here in the second half, and it only takes one missed assignment for this offense to explode.” From Heather Dinich blog 10/17/09 8:12 pm

As far as the championship opponent, I have no fear of Clemson as a whole; but I want nothing to do with CJ Spiller. Spiller is the sort of talent who can singlehanded unbalanace a game. I would much rather see BC as our opponent there.

I just can’t believe that anybody would even defend a team that allows a team like Vandy to score like it did, a team like WF to score the way they did… I mean come on, wake up and smell the coffee…

Gt4ever – This is a sorts blog; take your political commentaries somewhere else. Regarding the GA Tech Yellow Jackets, and how their defense is working hard – stuff it up your skirt little girl.

If you don’t feel like supporting our team, take a drive about 90 miles northeast of the city. We don’t need fans like you.

Gotta beat Duke first. Having said that, I’m actually glad that Heather Dinich has picked Clemson. Clemson comes in with a chip on their shoulder about the Tech game earlier this year. Hopefully this will put a chip on our shoulder as well. Our guys need to know that they will not be respected by the rest of college football unless we win the rest of our games this season. They are ready to write us off as soon as we lose one game. Stick with the plan, ball control, relentless run attack and burn em with a pass once they become too focused on stopping the run.

One game at a time. Duke is now the biggest game on our schedule. FOCUS and EXECUTION.

As far as defense (or offense for that matter) making a team worthy of a top 10 ranking, it takes both to win a game and the relative measure of each is the final score. Just win the next one, the rest will take care of itself.

Beat Duke and enjoy a little rest to heal up and then renew our focus on UGA.

We should place all focus on Duke. They have the potential to trip us up should be lose that focus. As far as Clemson being our opponent in the ACCCG, we need to worry about getting ourselves into that game. We have no control over the other side of the equation. Am I worried about facing Clemson, no. I am worried about Duke. I will worry about our opponent when I know who it is.

Should it be Clemson, the game should be interesting and a true battle. Both teams have changed a lot since the meeting earlier this season.

As far as HD is concerned, her record speaks for itself. She is dismal and if it means that her lack of confidence in GT makes the players/coaches work that much harder, so be it. She can spout whatever meaningless drivel she so choses. I don’t care as long as GT plays to it’s best ability and wins.

GATech69; what are you smoking? Duke beat the Terps. I ain’t got the time to play through all the what if scenarios. Tech is a good team, but they have much work left. the ACC should change its name to the WHACK(ed) conference. MD stinks, but they manhandle Clemson, who has been on a roll since losing to the Terps. Duke is one game from being bowl eligible; Miami can’t decide if it is Jekyll or Hyde; and WTF happened to VA Tech? If the Jackets stay true to what got them to where they are they will steamroll the Blue Devils. Neither UGA nor Clemson can be overlooked, and as pointed out, Clemson is playing well and will be hungry for a BCS bowl bid. I’d love to see the jackets take on either FL or Alabama; or how about Texas? Then again, maybe TCU, Boise or Cincy need to get b**tch-slapped but a second-tier BCS team so we can put all this “cinderella” nonsense behind us.

Just looking ahead for a second or two, imagine how tough the ACC’s Coastal is going to be next year. GT, Miami and UNC have most everyone returning. Throw in Clemson and FSU on the other side. It could be considered the best in the country next year.
And no, I haven’t been smoking anything.

I would wager that GT insider and GT rich have never played a down of football at the college level. You guys are funny, it must be the rose colored glasses that you are wearing… I bleed GT, but I am just stating the obvious. We play in a soft conference and we have NO defense, well maybe spurts of some Defense…

Maybe Dinnich isn’t that impressed with overtime victories over Wake freaking Forest. Or maybe Tech’s weak azz schedule does not impress her. Or maybe your weak azz defense doesn’t impress her. Or maybe your laughable kicker does not impress her. Holy bejeebus Tech fans, you’ve got a good team but please get over yourselves. There are several teams that would absolutely lay the wood All The Way Turnt Up to you. The good news is you just happen to not play them. I would love to see the bloodbath that a Terrance Cody would make of your undersized offensive line. He probably has bigger turds than your starting left guard.

Georgia Tech: A nice little ACC team. No more. No less. Get over yourselves.

Bob, you say it best. Just understand that we as GT fans are very passionate and have waited a very long time for a good football team. A competitive team that will fight for 60 minutes. I think Coach Johnson is the right man for the job, and if, and that’s a BIG if, he can recruit, I think we may be building something special at GT. The 1990 team was a small glimpse of what is possible, but it obviously was not sustainable. Our fan base ranges from the arrogant uninformed that run fans off to the overly passionate that just want to see something that’s not there. I for one will pull for my jackets to the bitter end!

Would be nice if:
Tech meets and beats Clemson in Tampa.
The chicken bowl committee feels sorry for the Dawgs and gives them a bid to play Clemson.
Clemson kicks their butts.
Maybe then, the dawg nation will just STFU.
