Tech No. 7 in BCS

A few tidbits so far today:

Tech is up to No. 7 in the BCS, AP and coaches poll. The Associated Press crowns its own champion. The coaches’ poll is a component of the BCS standings.

——

Saturday’s game against Duke will kick off at noon.

——-

Heather Dinich of ESPN.com is picking Clemson to beat Georgia Tech in the ACC championship game. I know this, it’s going to be a heck of a game.

——

There’s still a shot Tech could play in national title game.

Florida would have to beat Alabama in SEC championship game. Texas would have to lose, likely to Texas A&M. Cincinnati could lose to either West Virginia or Pittsburgh.

Then, Tech would have to hope that wins over Duke, Georgia and Clemson would give it enough points to leapfrog unbeatens TCU and Boise State.

And beating Clemson again will be no easy task.

First things first – we must win at Duke.

Before we go worrying about any conference championship game, I believe we have a game next Saturday that is pretty important.

There is no question that Tech should win, but Wallace-Wade stadium will be 3/4 empty for a noon kickoff next week. There is typically no energy in the stadium and it is not unheard of for teams to struggle getting fired up to play because the atmosphere is so laid back.

Let’s worry about the ACC championship in a couple of weeks.

As for Heather Dinich, she has consistently underrated Georgia Tech all season. She seems like a very dedicated reporter and I don’t think it is a personal bias, but she just doesn’t seem like she thinks Dwyer, Nesbitt and company are legit. Apparently, Tech is going to have to win their next four games before she believes this team is capable.

Duke has scared the hell out me for the last month and a half. Their passing attack could exploit our defensive weakness as as much as any team in the country. We should be able to rack enough points to win in a shoot out, but you can’t under estimate just how badly we need a week off.

Maybe we shouldn’t be in the NC hunt because we were embarrassed against Miami. However, we’ll be in GREAT shape for next year with a high ranking early.

I can’t see Tech losing to a team that itself lost to a team (Maryland) with only 2 wins this season. Has Ms. Dinich ever seen a Tech game?

In golf it’s call getting a read, in football we have tapes and we have the tape of NC doing a number on Lewis and the Duke offense. We should win but the Wake game has dimmed my exuberance. I’ll settle for just a win. we’ll worry about UGA and the ACC game later..The bye week will give our beaten up defense a chance to heal.

Whats with Clemson and all the Media love. You would think they are world beaters, and many major Sports outlets have them beating us in a possible rematch in the ACCCG.

GT69 – ESPN always has an anti Tech bias. Remember in 1990 even up to the half time and with Tech leading, the announcers were still calling for a UVa victory. They don’t know what they are talking about so I’d just ignore them. After the UGA game I will consult my tea leaves and give you a better prediction.

clemson scares me. It would be a huge letdown to lose the ACCCG and not make a BCS game. They’re the only team so far in the ACC that both years have really given our offense trouble (although CPJ has still beaten them both times). We got a couple breaks to win the first time in bobby dodd so it will be tough.

UGA will probably be similar to last year but i think we win this one by 10 instead of 3 as we did last year

All season Heather Dinich has gone against Georgia Tech. She LOVES C.J. Spiller and thinks that Tech is just getting lucky week, after week, after week. I’m slowly losing faith in her and ESPN’s ACC blog. Tech is 9-1 last time I checked and Dwyer has better numbers too

One game at a time, and up next are the Duke Blue Devils. The Yellow Jackets are playing winning football at this point of the season, and doing it with several back-up players. Give them and Coach Paul Johnson lots of credit.

Big Dawg fan here. As much as it hurts to say it the Jackets have earned their #7 ranking and I have a ton of respect for CPJ going for it on 4th down. Best wishes the balence of the year exept of course for the UGA game. That will be our bowl game and a chance at redemption although I don’t think we have a chance in hell to win that game. I can still dream though. We stink but we’ll be back.

Yellow Fuzz, way to keep good records man!

I don’t know what the he!! Dinnich is smoking. I really don’t like the fact that she rails on GT so much. Every week it’s the same old same old – someone else is going to beat us. I think she is an x’s / o’s or level of talent kind of reporter. As such, she thinks Clemson has a chance (assuming we beat Duke). She doesn’t realize that CPJ and this GT team are just simply winners. Knowing how to win is probably more important than knowing how to pass. Some teams just have it. UF hasn’t really played a great game all year, yet they’ve won every game. That’s what makes teams special.

GA Tech Insider

I just saw this posted on one of the GA Tech boards:

Starting with GA Tech’s game against Mississippi State, when the defense gave up 14 points in the second half after giving up 17 in the first half, our defense began to make some clear improvements, for the most part, in every game the Jackets have played in the second half of every game since then.

Against FSU, the defense only gave up 10 points in the second half of the game after giving up 34 in the first half.

Against Virginia, the defense gave up 3 points in the second half after giving up 6 in the first half.

Against Vanderbilt, the defense gave up 3 points in the second half after giving up 28 in the first half.

Against Wake Forest, the defense gave up 7 points in regulation after giving up 17 in the first half.

The only exception is the game against Virginia Tech, which scored 20 points in the second half after scoring 3 in the first half.

They threw in some National statistics of some of the teams GA Tech has played that I found interesting:

Passing Offense

Florida State is ranked 10th

Wake Forest is ranked 27th

Miami is ranked 28th

Passing Efficiency

Miami is Ranked 15th

Florida State is ranked 23rd

Wake Forest is ranked 25th

Virginia Tech is ranked 27th

Rushing Offense

Mississippi State is 12th

Virginia Tech is ranked 21st

Scoring Offense

Miami is ranked 21st

Clemson is ranked 25th

Florida State is ranked 29th

Total Offense

Florida State is ranked 20th

The point was that GA Tech’s defense has been playing some pretty “decent” offenses so far, in particular, in the passing game, and that the second half adjustments seem to really helped out..

We seem to forget how porous our defense has been at least against the pass. Duke and ga seem fairly proficient in that. If either muster up a defensive stop or 2 we could be looking at 11-2 or God forbid 9-3 and no trip to the ACC championship. I think playing against Florida is a REAL stretch. Let’s be realistic

For everyone who keeps saying, “Tech has no defense or special teams” and “Wake moved the ball at will against GT”, you need to look at the numbers:

WF – 28 yards on 25 rushes yesterday.
WF – The BEST PASSER in WF school history was 26 of 40 for 263 yds.
WF – 28 Return Yards in 4 quarters.

Check the FACTS before you make assumptions…Those are pretty decent stats!!

Things are not that bad in Athens you should be celebrating you thrilling victory over Tenn Tech. It might move you up from 51 in the 119 team rankings to some where in the 40’s. That’s a big jump. If you guys can beat AU you might just break in the top 40. Big props to Willy and BOBO for that great game plan yesterday.

Why are we “The Jackets” considered to be a Joke by some? We beat Miss St by a larger spread than Florida and also Vandy! Don’t get me wrong Florida deserves to be number 1, but alot of haters belittle our wins, stats, etc. Maybe it’s not us, but the HATERS who need to look within themselves. “Sorry your team isn’t doing as well. Maybe next year? Want a cookie?” Oy!

I guess we Jackets need to keep winning and let Dr. Phil deal with Mr. & Mrs. Self-Absorbed. Ramblin Wreck!

Must be hard for the ugag fans. They talk about contending for the national championship in August (seems like every year), whereas the GT fan base can legitimately talk about GT’s chances in November. It may still be a long shot but GT is still in the conversation in the middle of November. That must really hurt.

GA Tech Insider

I would also like to add to all of you slamming the GA Tech defense:

Wake Forest put up 555 yards of total offense against Miami the week before they played GA Tech this past weekend, and that was with Riley Skinner getting hurt I might add, and when they left Atlanta after playing our Jacket defense, they had only put up about 290 yards of total offense, with Skinner playing the entire game, INCLUDING overtime.

Now I’m not so much good with numbers any more, but I’d say that our defense holding Wake’s offense to 290 yards is just under twice as good as Miami’s defense, which everyone seems to think is so much superior to the Jacket’s right now.

In fact, as the season is wearing on, outside the first half against Vanderbilt (and let’s take away the kickoff return for the touchdown), the defense seems to be improving. Saturday afternoon’s game against Duke will be tough, with their prolific passing game, averaging over 300 yards per game; but knowing that Duke only rushes for about 70 yards per game can help the defense prepare for a more one dimensional game plan, like they did the second half against FSU, Virginia, Vandy, and Wake Forest.

I can assure you that Paul Johnson, his coaching staff, and the team aren’t taking the Duke Blue Devils lightly this coming weekend, and as many of you may have heard, the mantra has been, the most important game of the year is the next one. One of the main goals of the season is within reach – the Coastal Division crown. That’s all the guys are focused on right now. If they can get by Duke, they’ll finally get a well deserved break in their schedule before they have to play the Georgia Bulldogs. But that break won’t come until after 4 PM on Saturday afternoon in Durham.

Funny thing about HD on ESPN, she picked GT to lose to VT and to UVA. Then last week she (on an ACC blog, not a Pac10 blog mind you) went to great lengths to prove Oregon was the best one-loss team, not GT.

I suppose it’s best for GT if HD keeps up her doubting – seems to be working out OK.
