Weekly records watch

From esteemed colleague Matt Dempsey:

[First, don't forget to join the AJC's Georgia Tech page on facebook at http://bit.ly/T16am for breaking news about the Yellow Jackets, and other observations]

A big win over Virginia keeps Tech in the race for the ACC Coastal Division title. Plus big numbers from the big guns keeps them on the march to the record books. Let’s see how they stand with four more games to go.

Rushing Records

Most rushes in a season
Name Rushes Year
1. Tashard Choice 297 2006
2. P.J. Daniels 283 2003
3. Joe Burns 282 2001

9. C.J. Williams 245 1995
10. Lenny Snow 202 1966
NR Josh Nesbitt 172 2009

With four games left to go, it’s hard to see how Nesbitt won’t end up in the top 10 for most rushes in a season. If he averages 24 carries a game the rest of the way, he’ll end up in the top five.

Most rushes, Career
Name Rushes Career

10. Lenny Snow 445 1965-67
12. Jonathan Dwyer 406 2007-
13. Josh Nesbitt 397 2007-

Nesbitt and Dwyer are still on pace for being in the top 10 on the career rushes list.
Dwyer needs 40 rushes in the next five games to unseat Lenny Snow from the top ten. Twenty two carries in the next four games will push Dwyer past Reggie Ball.

10. C.J. Williams 1138 2009
NR Jonathan Dwyer 718 2009
NR Josh Nesbitt 707 2009

Dwyer’s big game against Virginia makes his path to a second top 10 rushing season a bit easier. He’ll need about 105 yards a game for the rest of the season to unseat C.J. Williams and join Tashard Choice and Robert Lavette as the only players with two season in the top ten list.

Nesbitt was under the 103 yards a game average he needed to be in top 10 at season’s end. Eighty two yards isn’t bad though. He now needs 108 yards per game to finish the season in the top ten.

9. David Sims 2274 1974-76
10. William Bell 2026 1989-93
15. Josh Nesbitt 1739 2007-

Dwyer is likely to pass Joe Burns for the #6 spot on the career rushing list with a good performance against Vanderbilt. Nesbitt just needs 288 yards to end up in the top ten. With 134 yards per game in the last four games he’ll be in the top nine. A tougher chore for sure.

10. Tony Hollings 11 2002
10 Josh Nesbitt 11 2009

Nesbitt’s two touchdowns against Virginia gave him a top 10 season for rushing touchdowns. Three more trips to the end zone will equal Dwyer’s touchdown total from last year. Five touchdowns in four games will land him in the top two.

9. C.J. Williams 20 1994-96
10. Shawn Jones 19 1989-92
12 Josh Nesbitt 18 2007-

Dwyer needs two more touchdowns to join Tashard Choice, Joe Burns and Robert Lavette in the top three. The top two is in reach. Nesbitt should easily reach the top 10 and might reach the top 5. Five more times crossing the goal line will give him a top 5 career for rushing touchdowns.

Gt4ever,

While I generally agree that our defense doesn’t seem to be of championship caliber. It really depends on who you play. For example, Alabama has no offense, so if we somehow get matched up against them our defense may be good enough. Lots of stuff can happen.

Also, our defense is as good as any in the country when they are standing on the sideline (as they seem to spend more and more time doing lately). It seems a good offense may be the best defense (to put a different spin on an old phrase).

cj – Yeah, it’s a shame we don’t have an exciting offense like UGA’s. Maybe if we did, we could have that exciting 4-4 record they will be enjoying after Saturday’s thumping. Understand this – bowls would rather have teams that win in boring fashion than teams who lose. Period.

I know that he is not a serious candidate, but should JN be considered for the Heisman? It can be argued that he is the most valuable player for his team this season.

Before someone has a thrombo, I realize that Josh is not the best football player in college. He is not even in the top twenty. But, imagine the Jackets without him.

Sorry all for the bonehead mistake on the division thing. I knew that it was Coastal, must have mixed it up when I was pulling the numbers on Monday.

Also, I’m looking at regular season games only for now because I still don’t know for sure how many games Tech will be playing before their season is over. I know they’ll have the bowl game for sure and while it’s extremely likely they will play in the ACC Championship, until it’s locked up I don’t want to count it. (Let’s say I don’t want to jinx it) Once they have the Coastal division locked up, I’ll include it and the bowl game in the numbers.

Finally, I know it’s about wins for the program and for the fans. I just thought some of you might enjoy seeing how prolific the current Tech stars are in relation to the records. I’m glad some of you like the feature.

It is good to see the records being set, however seems unfair to the players who played at a time when they could only play three years no freshman players on varisty. Maybe need separate records or to average based on games played.

GT4ever,
I don’t know what you base your statement on, but Johnson has brought some excellent football players to GT. Some are red-shirted and some are getting a lot of playing time. Every single player on the roster is not a Gailey recruit.
I agree that we don’t have a top 10 defense and it’s way too early to even think NC’s. When we get 42 minutes of possession, we only need a top 25 defense.
Beat Vanderbilt.

Records are made to be lied about….. GT has one AP National title (split with Colorado) UGA has one AP National Title. In 1942 the DAWGs had the best record in the country at 10 and 1 but OHIO STATE( at 9 and 1) was awarded the NC (due to northeast sports writer bias) and the Dawgs finished 2nd. Tech was ranked 2nd and the Dawgs 5th when they played that year. The Dawgs won 34 to 0. Where are your other three NCs???

So why don’t you identify some of those “excellent” football players from those #49 and #52 recruiting classes? But we’ll see won’t we? When Gailey’s skill players are gone there will be a substantial degradation of that offense.

Art, first of all, you are a stereotypical tard. More importantly however is that you are embarrassing yourself. Honestly, go burn yourself. Your team is not capable of beating this offense…even standard offenses at that, so you make tardy claims about OTHER teams defenses against this offense. Hahahahaha. I love it so much. You guys are desperate. I have been saying for weeks how I don’t care about the UGA game so long as we win a BCS bowl. F it. I hope we slice your F’ing jugulars repeatedly. If GT wins out they could possibly get the opportunity to be beat down and utterly embarrassed in front of the whole country AGAIN. Playing Alabama or Florida is not that far fetched. Both of those defenses would stick CPJ’s offense up his butt so far he’ll never be able to extract it.

Art,
The same way Saban’s defense embarrassed Utah? (31-17)
A lot of people, maybe you weren’t one of them, said that Johnson’s offense wouldn’t work on the BCS level. No one was saying that Gailey’s recruits were good enough to make the offense successful. Most of the predictions for 2008 had TECH winning 4 or 5 games. Maybe you weren’t one of those people either and saw that a kid that UG wouldn’t play at QB or a running back that wasn’t as good as their “recruit” would win 8 or 9 games.
I was there at the LSU beat down last year and it was painful and embarrassing. I was there at the Miami beat down this year and it was painful and embarrassing. The offense has improved since those games, but until we beat an Alabama, Florida, USC, or Texas, most people will continue to discount GT and Johnson. Most people aren’t 7-1 and ranked #11, with the #1 rushing offense in the nation.
It’s only year two and as you said, “we’ll see.”

So let’s see if I understand where the sour grapes Dawgs fans stand…
1) “It’s not a real offense – those points don’t count!”
2) “You cheat – even though the refs don’t call it!”
3) “You only win because you play teams you can beat!”
4) “You won’t win any more when your coach who wins leaves!”
5) “The best teams in the country would beat you!”

Did I miss anything?

Doug:

How about having a little talk with Chip Towers and reminding him that there is another team in Georgia that recruits players besides UGA? His last 10 posts:

5 about UGA football
1 about UGA men’s basketball
1 about UGA WOMEN’S basketball
0 about ANY GT sports

I think Chip still hasn’t gotten over the fact that Derrick Favors picked Tech over UGA, or that Steven Hill was not impressed with Richt’s last minute push to get him to come to UGA.
