Paul Johnson transcript

Courtesy of Georgia Tech’s sports information department, a transcript of Paul Johnson’s press conference on Tuesday:

Opening Statement:

“I was proud of our guys after the Virginia game. It’s another streak that people liked to talk about that our team put an end to. I don’t know if we played our best game of the year. You have to give the kids from Virginia a lot of credit, they played hard. But, we did enough to find a way to win the game. Once we got deep into the third quarter, we felt good about where we were. It was a concern that for the second week in a row we started out committing penalties on offense and hurting ourselves by stopping drives. On the first drive, we had a fourth and short that we were getting ready to go for and we jumped offside’s. Then, we take it into the end zone and have a chop block that wiped four points off the scoreboard. That’s a concern. On the flip side, I thought we did a good job defensively, especially in the first half. We held them and made them kick some field goals. If you can do that [not giving up touchdowns] you usually have a pretty good chance to win the game. All-in-all, we played ok and won the game. It just makes this week’s game that much bigger.”

On Vanderbilt:

“I have a great deal of respect for [Vanderbilt head coach] Bobby [Johnson]. We’ve played against each other a lot. He and his staff do a great job and they’ll have their team ready to play. I think they’re a much better team than their record would indicate. They’ve played some teams close, coming off last week’s 14-10 loss at South Carolina. I think they’re in the top 25 in scoring defense and they usually don’t beat themselves. We’re going to have to go on the road to their place and play well.”

On the importance of Saturday’s game with Vanderbilt, despite it being an out-of-conference game:
“I think our football team, to be a special one, has to go out and want to win every game. I can’t imagine ever playing a game where you didn’t feel like it was important, not me anyway. We hear a lot about the SEC here and there’s always comparisons between the two leagues. We have an opportunity this year to play three SEC teams and this is our second one. So, we’ll see how we measure up against them.”

On worries of the team letting down against Vanderbilt:

“I’m not worried about that. I hope our guys are mature enough to realize that Vanderbilt is a good football team. We’re playing against the SEC, we’re not supposed to be able to compete. It’s a chance for our guys to match up with [an SEC team] again. Like I said, I know what we’re walking into. I’m sure it’s a game [Vanderbilt] feel they can win. Why wouldn’t they, they’ve played everyone on their schedule close. Georgia blew the game open late with some kick returns, but that was a pretty close game throughout. The rest of their games have been close. They played LSU tough in Baton Rouge. They have a pretty good football team. Their record is deceiving, I think.”

On success of the offense in the second half of the last two games:
“Like I said earlier, in the last two games, we’ve hurt ourselves early on with penalties. It would interesting to go back and see how many times in the last three or four games where a drive hasn’t been stopped by a penalty. I think you would see that it hasn’t happened a lot. We’ve kind of inflicted that on ourselves, which is tough to overcome. ”

On Virginia Tech safety Kam Chancellor’s accusations of illegal blocks occurring in the Georgia Tech-Virginia Tech game:

“I don’t know, I don’t pay any attention to what players say. That game was two weeks ago and its over with. He has his opinion. I think there’s more publicity and exposure now; I don’t think the officiating has changed. I’ve said before, I wouldn’t want to do their job and I think those guys do a great job. But, they’re human, they’re going to miss calls just like coaches aren’t going to call the perfect play every time. Now, because of all of the TV coverage and the internet, boy if they miss one, it’s documented for everyone to see over and over again. There’s a lot of scrutiny put on them. There’s a lot of judgment calls in a football game that opposing fans are going to disagree on. I think, overall, officials do a good job for what we ask them to do.”

On the improvements of the defense:

“We’re getting a lot closer to having a base system on defense, similar to what we have on offense. You add a wrinkle or two every week and guys get better adjusted to that. You know where weaknesses are, so you know where to tweak it if guys are getting hurt. The last few weeks, we’ve been better against the run. Virginia Tech gashed us a little bit, but that was on quarterback scrambles for the most part. Virginia had a very tough time running the ball. We’ve also been fortunate in that we haven’t had to run many plays on defense. We’ve done a good job getting teams off the field and the offense is doing a great job of staying on the field. We’re still no where we want to be, though.”

On if it is expected that opposing teams will alter play calling early in games in order to get an advantage on Georgia Tech:

“I think teams will start doing that. I think we saw a little bit of that on Saturday with Virginia taking the ball first. Most of the time I don’t know why we have a coin toss; if we win it we defer, if they win it they receive. I think that people want to try to get ahead. They feel like they get behind the eight ball if we score first. It varies from team-to-team.”

On depth of the offensive line:

“I think the backups are getting better. The more reps they take the better thy’re going to get. They played some snaps on Saturday and they’re going to have to play more from now on out. The concern you always have as you get deeper into the year is the depth issue raises its head. We’re playing 11 straight games and our guys have been pushing through pretty good, but their still beat up, as you can imagine. So, we’re going to need the backups to play more.”

On if things are improving on the recruiting trail with the Yellow Jackets’ success on the year, especially on offense:

“I don’t think there’s been any difference. I never really found a problem with it before. I think it was something that people wanted to make a problem and I think its going to be a little harder for opposing coaches to get into a kids ear now. I was happy to see that Demaryius Thomas is a semi-finalist for the Biletnikoff Award, because there goes a lot of the opposing thoughts of “Why would you go there, you can never get any notoriety as a receiver.” But, I’m just happy for him because he’s worked so hard and he’s earned it. Certainly, if we can finish out the year and have a great year, it will probably be positive and help. But, we have all our commitments lined up and had them before the season started.”

On being named to the watch list for the Bear Bryant Coach of the Year Award:

“To me, that says more about your football team and your assistant coaches than anything else. I’ve been fortunate to be a part of some really good teams and win some coach of the year awards and those kinds of things. They say more about your players and your assistant coaches than anything else in my opinion.”

“Slick”; ignore the ignorant and feel free to post on this blog whenever you like. It’s always nice to have someone on here who can have a conversation from an opposing side who can be civil. I commend you.

Jacket fans, I can assure you that Paul Johnson is making sure that his team knows that he can’t take Vanderbilt lightly this coming Saturday night. He has the utmost respect for Coach Johnson because of not only what he has accomplished at Vandy, but also because of their past confrontations when they competed against each other when Paul was at GA Southern and Bobby was at Furman.

Paul has also been showing the boys how close the Commodores played LSU at Death Valley this season, as well as South Carolina, both ranked teams from the SEC, and then he had no problem pointing out several mistakes from the game against Virginia. Besides several missed blocks, there were numerous penalties that made Paul crazy last Saturday, and he’s on a mission right now to work on those this week.

Defensively, the coaches know that Vandy is more of a passing threat than a rushing offense, and their special teams have been off the chart, so extra time is being spent watching film and working on assignments. I promise you; the Jackets aren’t sitting there looking past Vanderbilt.

Slick…Also, for the record, CMR won the SEC, won a BCS game, went 13-1, and finished 3rd in the country during year 2 of his tenure at UGA. So enjoy this while you can – there’s no guarantee it will last.

So CMR won with Donnan’s recruits?

CMR is a great coach, no doubt about it. CPJ is also a great Coach. Difference is Tech fans will not call for our coaches head if he has one down year after 7 good years. Its the DAWG fans we hate, no class no education and a really average football team that we will dominate for the next decade. Poor DAWG fans, there is nothing quite as fun as kicking you while you are down.Keep talking about that running back that played 30 years ago and the last time you sniffed a NC. Tech will start out next year ranked in the top 5. My bet is we win 2 or 3 NC in the next 4 or 5 years. Sure can’t wait to listen to the DAWG fans then….

Bobby Johnson press conference:

http://vucommodores.cstv.com/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/102609aab.html

On Georgia Tech’s running attack:
“What they do a great job of is letting you decide who is going to run the football. If we are going to try to take somebody away the quarterback will keep it or they will pitch it. If you get too many up there to do that, they will throw it. They do a great job of reading the defense and deciding who is going to get the ball on a particular play. Because it is a balanced set, they have an opportunity to spread the defense out and make you play the entire field. They do a great job with their scheme and they execute it extremely well.”

On how you combat Georgia Tech’s running attack:
“You’ve got to play the whole system and that is the thing about it. It is hard to get your guys ready in a week to play their whole system that they practice from spring practice on and play in every game. The challenge is to be as simple as possible, but have enough weapons to take away some of the best things that they do. In doing that, sometimes because your guys aren’t familiar with it, you compromise your defense somewhere else. That is what Paul Johnson (Georgia Tech head coach) does a great job of. He sees that and he’ll know exactly what to do to come back and hurt you if you are overplaying somebody or you’ve got a weak spot that you don’t realize because you don’t face that type of offense often.”

—-

On the key to stopping a team coached by Paul Johnson:
“There is no key. If there were a key, someone would have it. Nobody has figured it out and there is no way to figure it out. It is a balanced set. You’ve got to have your defense evenly distributed and it ends up with a lot of one-on-one confrontations. If they are running the ball, you are going to have to beat a block and make the tackle. If they are passing the ball, you are going to probably be covering man-to-man because not a lot of people are going to get in zones because they run the option so well, they will run the option on third and 10 and make a first down. You just have to be a sound as you can and, in my opinion, as simple as you can, and still cover what they are doing.”

On being familiar with Paul Johnson’s coaching style dating back to the Southern Conference:
“I have a pretty good knowledge of what he does, but for me to get that over to our players is the trick. (Assistant coach) Bruce Fowler has been working against that offense for years and years, but there are all kinds of things that we could dream up, but you can’t get them taught that quickly. We are going to basically have two days of practice and then Thursday is a non-contact day. You need full-speed football all week, but you can’t do that. We are down to nubs as far as injuries, and we just have to work with what we have to work with.”

” Big South GA. dawg…mutt ” I know that you would like for our coach to leave because the media has nothing good to say about your Athens Ga. Redneck Mutts now…… Apparently you don’t know who our A.D is now. Dan has declared that C.P.J will be on the TECH sideline for a long time to come. He and his staff were given a raise last year before the season came to an end. It was right after we stung you all and decided to take your hedges home as a souveneir REMEMBER ? Why don’t you be honest….You know that you have been “STUNG” once and it is coming again on Nov. 28….Only the score will not be nearly as close this year…….By the way…..Coach Johnson is running out behind the Ramblin Wreck ……WE ARE THE BIG BOYS !!!!! WE ARE BEATING THE BIG BOYS!!!!! DO YOU GET ESPN IN SOUTH GEORGIA ???????? IS # 11 in the country among the big boys? I better stop….this STINGS !!!!!!!!!

I’m a GT fan and I don’t have a problem with most of Slick’s comments. PJ himself said that preseason polls were a joke because if you were a top ten team to start the season you could afford a loss most years but if you are outside the top ten then you have to be perfect and hope for some help.
As much as it pains me to say it, UGa has been a top tier program under Richt. What keeps them from the elite is the fact that they have not competed for Nat’l Championships. They spend most of the season hanging in the #10-14 range with an early loss and a loss to Fla and then finish strong with win over GT and a bowl win to put them in the top 5 or 10. Hopefully PJ will have Tech winning more of the UGa/Tech games and knock UGa to the next tier. Go Tech!

All polls, including the BCS, are rigged games and are only useful for creating “fan buzz.” Had Florida or Alabama lost last weekend (and both could have) they would have dropped to 5-9 in the polls and the winner of the SEC championship game would still be in the hunt for the national championship game. Not so GT (or probably UGA) in a similar situation. Southern Cal can lose to Washinton and still be ranked in the top 10! A few years ago, the same could have bee said about FSU or Miami. They were “made for TV” teams back in the day. IF GT wins out this year and is ranked highly next preseason (say 5-7) it will help… but a 1-point loss to a good team on the road early in the season would still drop the Jackets ten spots in the polls. Watch what happens to TCU if they lose one regardless of circumstances.

How the times have changed. The wimpy dawg fans who are sticking around our posts have dropped to such lame issues as “someone is going to take your coach”, “youR high school offense” and “I’m emailing Nebraska to take your coach”. Well here is the best part

#1 No one wants UGA’s Coach
#2 The only “high school” offense in the state is in Athens. I’ll take our avg. score per game over UGA’s. Isn’t offense about scoring points?
#3 You may want to convince Nebraska or someone to take your coach and hopefully for your sake Willie Martinez goes with him?

lthough Saturday’s game won’t affect the ACC standings, Johnson is using the conference respect angle to motivate his players.

“We hear a lot about the SEC here, and there’s always comparisons between the two leagues,” Johnson said. “We have an opportunity this year to play three SEC teams, and this is our second one. So, we’ll see how we measure up against them.”

Tech won at Mississippi State 42-31 on Oct. 3 and will host Georgia on Nov. 28
