The remaining games

First, I think Georgia Tech is still on that never-ending drive that started against Virginia on Saturday. Last I heard they were at the Eastern Shore. A little tired, but still moving the ball.

I wrote yesterday, and have thought (as I’m sure y’all have, as well) that Tech is pretty close to being guaranteed a spot in the ACC championship game now that Miami lost again.
Switching to my Al Groh manner of speaking: to quote someone who works at a multi-faceted, multi-platformed sports and entertainment network, that circumstance may not be necessarily true.
Yes, the Jackets need to beat Wake Forest and Duke, which wouldn’t seem to be that difficult a thing to do considering past history and recent results.
But, the Deacons and the Devils have something in common that has given the Jackets some issues this season.
You know what I’m talking about.
Good quarterbacks.
Duke’s Thaddeus Lewis and Wake’s Riley Skinner are arguably two of the top four passing QBs in the ACC, behind Ponder and Harris. (Kyle Parker must be thrown in there too, at least on plays where he gets to throw right down the middle of the field as he got to do in the win against the ‘Canes.)
And, as Tech’s players and fans know: Harris, Ponder and Parker gave Tech’s defense fits to the tune of 890 yards passing.
Lewis has already passed for 1,972 yards this season. It’s like Spurrier’s back in Durham.
Skinner has 1,949.
So, while Tech’s offense has been doing its thing, keep in mind that there are still two really good quarterbacks left to deal with.
——————–

Tech is at No. 11 in the BCS poll, but be prepared to watch them slide in the next few weeks. The ACC’s back-end schedule isn’t the best, and even though the Jackets may keep winning, the computers will penalize them for the strength of the competition. Cincinnati and Boise State saw it happen this week.

——————–

You may not have been in your chair yet, but Tyler Melton caught a pass on Tech’s first snap. It was his first catch this season. Johnson said he wanted to get him the ball because he’s been blocking a lot. I guess it was a reward, so to speak.

We just have to keep winning, and keep winning convincingly. You can only do so much to impress the coaches (and even less to impress the BCS computers).

Getting to the ACC CG shouldn’t be hard, but we can’t fall into a trap against Wake or Duke. Gotta take care of business.

If we keep winning we will move up. Some of the guys ahead of us have not played the toughest opponents on their schedules.

Of course, Bose and TCU should win out. So, how is the strength of schedule for those two teams?

FSU absolutely killed BYU so why is a win over them a big deal?

Polls suck. The only way to prove who is best is on the field.

Our remaining games are definately not cream puffs… I honestly think we will handle vanderbilt, but we absolutely cannot come out flat against wake or duke. UGA im not really worried about us coming out flat, but I would sure hate for us to be watching another team play in the ACCCG because we lost to duke or wake.

So which one is our obligatory “trap game”? VANDY spooks us on Hallowe’en night? (Paul Johnson says nighttime “away” games are “brutal,” and this one is in hostile Nashville)

Or will Wake Forest’s Riley Skinner pass us dizzy, even on Grant Field?

Maybe Thaddeus Lewis of Duke will do it to us in Durham.

Georgia will fight like crazy against us, as usual, and that little rascal Cox may have a big day.

What do you think, Doug? Which of the four remaining are we going to lose to?

Can’t get too worried about the polls…they’re going to do what they’re going to do and all we can do is win BIG for the rest of the season. Tech seems to be on track to do something great this year! Our chances of playing in the ‘BIG’ game, barring any crazy breakdown of too many teams to mention, were slim and none from the beginning of the season. Maybe, next season will see some respect from the polsters, but this is the year we get them to look our way! Let’s win out the season , add an ACCC trophy to our resume and blow out whomever we play in whatever bowl. THAT would make for a special season!

P.S. I’d bet anything that none of the top teams would want to play GT in a playoff system (Of course, this is MOST speculative)

I am much less worried then in past seasons about us letting up against weaker teams. CPJ will keep us focused for the remainder of the schedule. No losing our way into the ACCCG like we did with Chan and Reggie.

You are going to hear this a lot in the coming weeks, so I’ll say it now first…Clemson will have a huge advantage because they have played our offense already this season. They may have even figured the option out. Smart money will take the Tigers and the 5 points.

Iowa is going to lose somewhere. Oregon and usc play each other this week. We will pass boise and tcu if we win out including the acc champ game. We need bama and fla to lose also. texas doesn’t look like they will lose. Even with all that the idiot pollsters will still vote a one loss fla bama usc over gt. This is why a playoff is needed. The way this sport crowns it’s champion is a joke. GT is playing better than anyone right now. Maybe texas is playing slightly better. Yet we aren’t even top 10. It’s a joke. Get a 16 or even 8 team playoff and the joke that is the bcs would be gone. Even a plus one would be okay but there would still be teams that are not historically powers that would get screwed.

I don’t get it, who have Boise State and TCU played? Why are they considered top ten teams? I looked at both of their schedules and absolutely laughed. It would be funny if it were not for the teams that are being denied a chance to play in the BCS cause of these clowns. I thought surely TCU would have a Texas on their schedule but of course not..and Boise State has noone either. What a blanking joke. The conferences they are in couldn’t beat Div IAA teams. I would have more respect for these two teams if they played an App St or SC State for that matter. It is cow manure to be polite….it is what it is and Cincinatti is not much better

AI – Iowa seems to be living on borrowed time. 2 last second blocked FGs against Northern Iowa, and now a last second TD pass to beat the Big Ten team who lost to Central Michigan of the MAC (a pretty edarned good team, though).

Focus had better be on the next game. I’m sure CPJ is. Should a win-out actually occur though, more prestige would be with a Big Ten opponent, since the media thinks that conference is as good as in the ’60s, ’70s, ’80s. They do travel well, though. I think the Big East is better right now.

Their should be some weighting factor to favor the recent games as the season progresses. Virginia’s D is a lot better than the first couple of games this season, for example. BC seems to be better recently, as well.

Va beat Indiana 47-7. That’s who Iowa plays this week. What gives us no chance at getting to the NC game is the sec officials giving help to bama and fla each week. TCU looked pretty darned good against BYU last night. Isn’t the BCS deal that only one non-BCS conference gets a bid? Boise State had good wins over Oregon and Tulsa, and has whacked everybody else. Nobody else left to play that is any good, and 4 of the 6 games are in Boise. TCU has Utah left on the schedule.

Al

Here’s what GT needs to get to the NC game. Yes it’s a long shot but still possible the way top teams are playing.
We obviously need to win out.
We need Ga to win out except obviously against us. That would give UF a loss. If ga doesn’t beat UF, a FSU win would do the trick. We need bama to lose also. They still have lsu @ miss st and @ auburn.
If one of those teams does win out, we have to have texas to lose to some crap big 12 team. A texas loss to ok st wouldn’t do it cause they are a good team. They would get the nod over us.
We need Iowa to lose. But if Iowa doesn’t lose, we could still pass them if psu loses again which would hurt their sos.
We need cincy to lose somewhere which is likely with WV and @ pitt left.
We need usc to lose again cause they will rank them ahead of us even though their loss was to a pathetic wash team who went 0-12 last year. We need oregon to lose. Oregon plays USC this week so one will lose. But we need both to lose imo.
We will leap over TCU and Boise by winning out. Their win over byu knocked buy out of the top 25 so their sos is eroding. Fsu beat byu so big deal.
If all this happens, and we win out, we can make it to Pasadena. Odds are not in our favor but it’s not out of the question.

LSU is another team to look out for. If they do beat bama, then they go to the sec champ assuming they don’t lose another game. We might need them to lose to Ark after beating bama. What could bring an end to the bcs is having 5-6 1 loss teams like gt, fla, bama, usc texas.

Miami and VT winning out is a must too to help with our bcs points.

If you like “dreaming,” then Texas has Oklahoma State, and they’re playing fairly well right now. Iowa still has to play at Ohio State. Alabama has LSU. Florida could have Alabama. Southern Cal and Oregon are playing. Southern Cal also has to play Arizona. Cincinnati plays at Pittsburgh. TCU has Utah (they barely lost to Oregon). Boise State has Nevada, whose just started playing better.

I guess what I’m saying is that GA Tech needs to worry about themselves. If they win out, then, who knows, anything is still possible. If they slip up just once, then stick a fork in any chances.

That’s why I think the team will be focusing on one game at a time.

The BCS a.k.a., Bowl CONSPIRACY Series is going to make damn sure an SEC team is playing for the title. They have too – they have put ALL of their eggs into the “SEC basket” with that gi-normous contract signed this years. The BCS can’t have one of its coddlings on the outside looking in, and we fans are just going to have to choke on that bogus fact.

Alabama basically loses on Sat., and FL didn’t really play that well. They stay at the top of the BCS rankings while, Cincy & Boise absolutely DEMOLISH their competition and DROP 2 spots each in the BCS standings.

If AL & FL are soooo damn good, then there’s NO WAY in he** that their games should have been so sloppy. Oh wait, I forgot I was being force-fed the “that’s SEC football” excuse. Amazing how 2-faced this system is. And Iowa wins against a poor MichSt team on the last play and moves UP 2 spots! So what argument does the BCS have for one its mighty SEC teams (UT) being beaten AT HOME by a crappy, 4 loss (3-4) Pac 10 team (UCLA)?????

That’s right, UCLA is 3-4 … losers of 4 straight Pac 10 games after starting out 3-0 vs. teams OUTSIDE the Pac 10! USC has lost how many games OUTSIDE the Pac 10 in the past 5+ years? Is the answer 1? Yes, ONE! Texas in the NC game! Otherwise the only teams that can beat them are teams in their “weak” conf. And don’t forget what SC did in last 4 vs the SEC.

Delbert:

Yes, Wake got a look at the TO on Saturday. But two things:

1. That game was played in a driving rainstorm. I don’t think that it will be raining that hard in Atlanta on the 7th.

2. If I remember correctly, Navy did not pass that entire game. So given the way CPJ runs the TO here vs. what Navy does, the pass is more of an option here than in Annapolis.

If GT wins the next 3 games, isn’t it nice to know that UGA will need the win against GT more than GT needs a win against UGA to have a successful season?? Also, if GT wins at Vandy this Saturday and does not score 34 or more points, the UGA posters like Bugsquacher will be here on Monday saying how they scored more points against Vandy than Tech did – that is all they have left this season.

Way too much talk about the future and what if’s here. Have you guys not followed GT in the past? We need not look over anybody. Yes we are past our seemingly “hard part” of the schedule but I would say that whole mindset can set us up for failure. We breath a sigh of relief get ready to coast and any if not all of the remaining teams can drop us. We have lost so many that we shouldn’t have in the past that cost us dearly. I am not at all comfortable with looking at bowl games or the BCS. Who cares lets focus on Vandy who will not be a push over nor will any of the others. If we do win the next three don’t think UGA won’t come in here trying as hard as they can to spoil our season. Focus on the now and the then will take care of itself.

We have only one thing to focus on, VANDY. Everything else is moot if you don’t take care of business THIS week. Like PJ said, every win makes the next game that much bigger. I really think PJ learned a very valuable lesson against LSU and Miami with respect to getting the team ready to play.

If they would have taken care of business against Miami, then nothing else would have mattered, but they didn’t. The only good thing bout the Miami game was that they deserved to lose that game. We can’t point at that game and say, if this or that would or wouldn’t have happened, we would have won, other than to say “if we had shown up”.

Again, take care of Vandy and worry about the next opponent on Sunday.

As far as worrying about everyone else, we have no control over that, so not worth wasting any effort on .

ARTC – Alabama won, but not in the manner I would have expected of a number 1 or 2 team playing an unranked team. That is very different than the GT/Clemson game, especially given where we are at in the season. BUT, it is what it is, same with Iowa.

We need to take care of Vandy, then worry about the next week. Nobody on the rest of our schedule should be taken for granted, most especially UGA, but we’ll start worrying about them in a few weeks.

Hey buttscratcher,

You’re still an idiot. You won’t talk about how your Dawgs faired last year or how they are doing this year. All you can talk about is 2007 and before. We all know, SEC and GT fans alike, that you Dawg fans are delusional every year about your team and when the team falters as it has recently that you point to the winning percentage, historical records, etc. to minimalize your team’s current failure. The fact is, you can’t change the past only the future. You might want to spend more time telling us why you think your inept Dawgs will beat Tech next month — then you might get more respect around here. Because right now you’re one of the dorks on these blogs. Everyone feels your pain in your posts but your pain is not making your team or you look good. Your posts are as weak as your argument is stale. We are entertained by your pain though. Please continue to make a fool of yourself and the Dawgs. We look forward to putting the Dawgs in the doghouse in November. You know it and your fellow Dawgs know it. Get some reality about the current situation and you won’t look so foolish talking about the past.

Good post Alpha. These teenage mutt fans like bugsquacher are clearly frustrated with the state of their program and they can’t talk about the present teams and the upcoming game except tell us what no one else believes. They don’t want to mention what everyone else knows, including many of their more intelligent fans — that the Yellow Jackets beat UGA this year. That prospect doesn’t sit well with the mutts so they share their frustration on these blogs and try to mask their obvious fear with outlandish predictions about the game or trying to remind us of the past. It is good entertainment though like you said.

USC plays in the National Championship against winner of FLA – LSU in SEC Championship (yes, UF beats my beloved but underachieving Dawgs this weekend); GT runs the table (yes, they too defeat my beloved but underachieving, defenseless, Dawgs, too) and plays the winner of Cin/ Pittsburgh Big East Championship OR plays and beats down an overhyped and overrated Boise State team in the Orange Bowl. Either way, Tech finishes strong this year. Man, that hurt to say…….

superDawg, what’s your point? It’s funny that all you have to hold onto is your little “my conference is better than your conference” statement. The ACC beat the sec head to head during the season last year. What?! No more predictions? Your record, thus far, is pretty bad! I know it kills you everytime Tech wins…this pleases me, much! GO TECH!!!

Coming from a Dawg fan, the only real test that Tech will have the rest of the way is UGA

Mock and say what you want Jackets’ fans BUT the Dawgs biggest strength is their Passing Game and that goes directly against Tech’s biggest Weakness, Pass Defense

On the other side, UGA is tough against the RUN on defense and weak against the PASS BUT, Tech is not a good enough passing team to exploit UGA’s defensive weakness

Plus for the first time in many years the Dawgs will have something to prove in the game with revenge on their minds

It will be interesting…and as much as it kills you Tech fans, yo need to PULL FOR THE DAWGS in the rest of our games so you can play a higer ranked team. Because if UGA were to win their games coming into Tech, they’d be ranked somewhere between 12-16

The guys can’t control the votes of the Beauty Pagent judges. What they can control is the focus and intensity they put on the field each Saturday. Winning out is entirely possible, but they have to do it on the field.

Tech fans are finally understanding the BS of the “BCS” that the Dawgs have been screwed with several times recently…..

But what is hurting Tech the most is that their biggest win is agianst a 5-2 VaTech team and their second biggest win is against a 3-5 Florida State team

coach smith—

I am going to miss your lectures when the season is over. You speak as if from some tall soapbox in the sky…

Of course UGA is the toughest of our remaining games…you don’t have to remind Tech fans that the UGA game will be hard fought. But pulling for the Dogs is a lesson in futility. Not only will they not win but really it is not going to matter much for us BCS-wise. If we can make it to the ACCCG and win…we will be BCS bowl bound and a top 5 clinch if we can win the bowl game. We don’t need UGA. UGA needs us to redeem their season.

GO JACKETS!!! BEAT VANDY!!!

superDawg, you’ll get the chance to see who is easier Florida or us in November. I don’t believe you will like the outcome. Florida nor Bama has impressed me this year. VT is much better now than they were against Bama cause their QB is much better. Tenn. is horrible, yet should have beaten Bama. Who has Florida beat?

Attack? Seriously? Toughen up man. After all you are a “coach” right? You have been saying we are going to lose every game this season…and then, credit to you, you return to these blogs talking UGA. You tend to lose some credibility after the 3rd or 4th time you predict us to get crushed and we don’t. We just aren’t that interested in what you have to say anymore…no offense.

Doug, GT has the best cure for hot opposing QBs. TOP – time of possesion Hang on to the ball with long time-consuming marches. If Tech can keep the ball 75% of the time and score on their drives then even hot quarter backs will not have the time to win games.Besides the tech defense is coming along nicely and is capable of a few stops.Of all the remaining games, including the one against the dawgs, the ACC championship is the one that worries me most. We expect either BC or Clemson to be there and both of them are good teams so it’ll take a great game from us to beat that team and make it to the Fedex Orange Bowl.

Amber-

You are right re: Texas being overshadowed but still don’t believe they beat Fla, Ala, or LSU. Way too much speed on both sides of the ball. I do, however, like your defensive coordinator, who will probably become UGA’s next head coach. If Texas can get by OK State this weekend, they should be a shoe-in for National Championship game vs SEC winner; if not, then USC will play SEC winner. Wouldn’t mind seeing Texas play undefeated and untested Boise State or Cincinnati in another BCS bowl.
