prognosis for second half
—————-
Roddy Jones says he’s not disappointed that his numbers aren’t what some may have expected. His longest run this season is less than 20 yards and his yards per carry average is 3.7, among the lowest of the most active A-backs. He said as long as the team is winning, everything’s cool.
Keep in mind, he didn’t come on last season until the final two regular season games when he had more than 300 yards rushing.
On a side note, Jones, a big baseball fan, said he’s rooting for the Dodgers in the playoffs now that the Rockies have been eliminated. And, if not the Dodgers, then anybody but the Phillies.
———
Kickoff for Saturday’s game will be 6:01 sharp. As you know, Georgia Tech likes to start fast….

Rising Star: Marcus Wright. Makes good blocks, and is so sneaky fast that defenders take the wrong angle in their pursuit.
Falling Star: Robert Hall. Hard to be a star when an unfortunate injury hits and you can’t play.
Enigma: More like a mystery. How do ACC refs keep their jobs?
What’s going right: Josh’s option reads. Result is more yards, more time of possession, fewer fumbles, and more points.
What’s going wrong: Inexperience on defense seems to have players out of position on passing plays.
Prognosis for 2nd half: This team will be in every game. Could win ‘em all, or could lose a couple, but not out-matched in ANY game.

O.K. I’ll play
rising star – Josh Nesbitt/BayBay Thomas (Tie)
falling star – Morgan Burnett
enigma – amount of space between receivers and our defender & between our pass rush and QB’s
what’s going right – CPJ’s ability to adjust from game to game and within games
what’s going wrong – Defense
prognosis for second half – If GT can win this weekend, improve the defense and special teams, and maintain consistency on offense, they win the ACC. (not really going out on a limb, am I?)

I’m with StraightJacket on Marcus Wright… I’ve really like the little guy since I saw him in the spring scrimmage. He’s crazy quick and he makes nice blocks.
This Saturday’s game is going to be defining. I really like our chances for the upset… and I’m not the only one. The Bleacher Report’s game prediction is GT 42 – VT 38.

This will be the game of the year for us. Hopefully our D will step up and make important stops when we need them.

Rising star: Bay Bay
Falling star: Defensive coaching staff
Enigma: Do we have a legit 2nd option for receiver?
Whats going right: Offense has kept defenses guessing (at least since the Miami game)
Whats going wrong: Injuries piling up.
Prognosis for 2nd half: 5-1 + 5-1 = 10-2. No room for error in the Coastal, I’m afraid we may not claw back into the race.

RISING STAR- JOSH NESBITT. The guy has willed our last three wins. He is showing consistency passing, and has been a beast running the ball. He is our true leader we have been looking for.
FALLING STAR- MORGAN BURNETT. He is still a stud, but he has been quiet besides the UNC game. He MUST step up if tech wants to keep winning down the road.
ENIGMA- Will our defense step up this saturday? VT has been on fire on offense, and their defense is the best we will face this year, so I dont think it will be a game where we rack up 40+ points and 500 yards total offense. We will more likely score in the 20’s. So, our defense must step up, or we lose.
WHATS GOING RIGHT- Our entire offense. Our passing game is now a threat, Dwyer seems to be getting more openings, Nesbitt is a warrior when he runs the ball, and we have four solid A-backs. Oh yeah, Bebe is a BEAST.
WHATS GOING WRONG- One word: Defense
PROGNOSIS FOR 2ND HALF- I think GT pulls the upset this weekend, but goes on to lose one more game afterwards. Im not trying to jinx us, but im calling Wake a loss. Then we come back and pound Duke and beat UGA by a TD in a shootout.

Rising Star-The entire offensive team. The whole concept of a football team is that everyone does their job to achieve the ultimate goal of winning a game. Statistics are overblown! The bottom line is are the players in the game getting their jobs accomplished. Making the blocks and running off the cornerback by going hard on that route even though it is a running play. As far as the defense, yes we got shredded in the first half, but we came out and made the adjustments and got a couple of stops in the second half. I’m also tired of hearing that if we don’t improve that Virginia Tech will just beat us to death. They might be getting the love from the press, but guess what, every team holding the #4 ranking the past several weeks has gotten beat! Ole Miss, LSU, and Virginia Tech on Saturday will make it three.
Go to http://isportsweb.com for more Georgia Tech Football articles including a feature article on how Virginia Tech’s mastermind at safety says he will stop the triple option. As well as how to properly cheer at a game. Go Jackets, Hokies Going Down!

If we can go 5-1 in the second half, I’ll be satisfied. I’ll be happy if we go 4-0 in remaining ACC games and ecstatic if we go 6-0. If we end the year and Tech’s only two losses are to top 10 teams, life has been pretty good. It would also really set us up for a potential championship run next year. Of course, there’s an outside shot that we win out and go bigtime bowling. I still think there’s a reasonable chance that the ACC could send two teams to BCS bowls this year.
As for the comments, I agree with straight jacket.

Rising Star- Nesbitt. He’s taken over as the leader of the offense. I’d say he does as much for this team as Tebow does for Florida. BayBay is a close 2nd.
Falling Star-Cooper Taylor. He’s been hurt, right? But he was supposed to be the key to this 4-2-5 D scheme that has been scrapped. Morgan B needs to do for the D what Nesbitt has done for the O, take over as the leader. But he needs some guys up front to step up. .
Our secondary has been torched because we are not getting pressure on the QB. We lost 3 D-linemen that are playing professionally now and nobody has asserted themselves to fill those voids. Coach has got to get more aggressive with blitzes to get the pressure and force some bad throws. Look for that this Saturday.
If we win this game there is no reason we can’t run the table. Need a huge effort from the D because VT is going to be tough to score on. It will be another close game won in the 4th Qt.

rising star:Paul Johnson, He is proving all the negative talk about his offence to be in error. falling star:Dave Womack, He hasn’t had an answer all season. If Paul Johnson can take a “rag-tag” bunch of offensive lineman and run over and around teams and pass the silly, why can’t our defensive coach be 1/2 as creative? The defence will have to be 80 percent inproved in order to beat Va Tech.Beamer is a genius, and will do a better job on or offence, so the defence must carry their share. After this game I look for us to win out and go toi the gator bowl again. go jackets!

If you noticed the plays in the last game were basically the same the whole game-normal plays we see in this offense we did not see last game ie-a back in motion behind JD before the snap and quick sweep-not one time-the guy went in motion buy straight down the line-it will be interesting to see how many wrinkles CPJ puts in- like the “old Timer” Bobby B said nobody does this offense better than CPJ and then he adds something no team has seen-Bobby even said in his press conference all the tape they had the formations and plays Tech ran they had not seen! What’s going wrong – Defense and Kick off unit
Second Half – If we get by VT hopefully we will see these boys take off and want to destroy the remaining opponents. If we beat VT, we have got to keep pouring it on because a loss on the back end of the schedule diminishes what we would or could have accomplished.

I was listening to the Paul Johnson Show last night and he was asked if the defensive problem was a coaching problem. He responded saying that he believes that neither the players or the coaches are doing a good job right now and that he controls the whole team and if the defense is not performing than it is his fault. It was good to see him take responsibility for all aspects of the team (not just the offense that is running on all cylinders right now). We have a good thing in Paul and I am confident that our defense will turn around.

Doug,
I think that return yards stat is misleading. We score a lot of points and therefore have a lot of kick offs. It is the average of return yards that matters more. Please check against that stat and report back. If we were winless 0-6 and only kicked off once per game, our return yards would be best in the conference….

Report card is just average – inconsistent offense, inconsistent special teams and horrible defense.
VT will kill GT Saturday and UGA will kill Vandy and then the angst / hype will switch
and all we will hear is how bad Tech is and how great UGA is.
Unless Tech can recruit some defensive studs – it will not matter how good/bad the option is – if you have to
score 49 to win every week – you will end up with a .500 record.

Based on the statistics provided at ncaa.com, Tech gives up slightly more than 24 yards per kickoff return, ranking 102 in the country … and that doesn’t include all the kicks that were not returned because they went out of bounds. Doug is right, this is definitely an area that needs work.

Straight Jacket – I agree whole-heartedly with your comment regarding the officiating but I don’t think it’s limited to the ACC. I have seen horrendous officiating in several games this year from a variety of conferences. As a former college basketball referee, I don’t get it. Officials are graded on their performance after each game. Like you, I wonder how many of them are able to keep their jobs.

You people need to actually watch the games before you start dissing Morgan Burnett. I must admit that I watch the replays, no I study the replays every night on the DVR. Not sure why I do. Burnett has made 3 or 4 game saving plays in every game. He is the best tackler on our team and hands down the best player on our defense. Just because he does not have a pick six in every game does not mean that he is not playing well, and before you start spouting off about how many passing yards we are giving up let me remind you that about 50% of pass defense is pass rush of which we have zero maybe less than zero….
You know dawg fans always say that we have the most un-educated football fans in the country and as bad as I hate to I have to agree with them….I would recomend all you Tech fans posters who never played football before to read at least one of the Bears books before you start posting…

Are we anywhere near .500 this year? I agree the defense needs vast improvement. But it’s not something a few adjustments can’t fix. rising star – Josh Nesbitt, with Anthony Allen right behind him.
falling star – Roddy Jones, though I wouldn’t necessarily call him “falling”.
enigma – Scott Blair. How can he look so good against Clemson and look so bad against Miami and North Carolina?
what’s going right – The spread-based triple option. The offense is starting to kick in and get the kinks worked out at the right time in the season for the stretch run.
what’s going wrong – The defense. We can’t settle on a defensive philosophy and it’s maidway through the season. 5-2 with a “wolf”. 4-3. 3-4. What are we doing? Why is the playbook in need of “simplification” every other week? wommack has his work cut out for him. We cannot continue to give up 40+ per game and lean on the offense to just score more points.
prognosis for second half – Beat VT, and the rest set up like that run in 1990 after the Virginia game. There’s no one on the schedule left that we shouldn’t beat. With that said, I predict we won’t lose – we will be 11-1 after we beat the Mutts and possibly looking at the ACC title game.

Yep – I think that the dawg nation is neurotic enough to start smack talking again after the Vandy win.
Are we .500 – no not now but we escaped a few – over the long run things tend to average out unless you
can bias them. I am just saying that unless we can get some defensive talent like we sent to the NFL last
year – we are going to look back at some ugly games. Maybe .500 was harsh – maybe a little higher than
that – but the point is we need a defense to match our offense because with a fumble here or dropped pass
there – we could have easily lost to Clemson, MissState and FSU
GA Tech Insider
October 15th, 2009
10:41 am
Everyone seems to have forgotten that the season began by GA Tech trying to replace three defensive linemen who were drafted by the NFL and the loss of a starting linebacker. We knew coming into our first game that our defense was going to be an achilles heel.
Then, GA Tech began to lose other defensive starters and key players, like Cooper Taylor, Rashaad Reid, and Anthony Egbuniwe, for several games, due to various injuries/illnesses, etc, so defenders who were not anticipated to play much, or play in their normal position were called into duty. Naturally, GA Tech’s defense was going to suffer. Is that the defense’s fault’ how about the defensive coordinator’s fault?
When the cupboard’s bare, sometimes you just have to make due with what you have left and try to stretch out your “resources” as best you can until you can “restock”. Sometimes a recipe works, sometimes it doesn’t. With a limited number of ingredients, however, you only have a few options on products you can manufacture, and depending on who you’re trying to feed that week, the meal just might not be enough.
We can look at GA Tech’s offense like a fine restaurant – lots of options and all well prepared. You’ll have an occasional slip up with service/execution, but for the most part, the food will be there and it satisfy almost everyone’s food choice. There will be other restaurants in the area, some will be successful; some not successful; etc.
So, with all of that, I would say that I would have to say that Josh Nesbitt has to be the Star at this point of the season. It is obvious other teams’ defenses have decided to try to take Jonathan Dwyer out of the equation, and Josh has made them pay with his correct reads, including his own ground game; and let’s not forget Josh’s improved passing game.
Ga Tech’s biggest disappointment to me is T.J. Barnes. I had really hoped that he would have been able to step up big this Fall and take more pressure off of the defensive line. I realize that he’s only a red shirt freshman, and that was a lot to ask of the young man, but I had really high hopes for him coming into the season, and I expect that he’ll meet them before he leaves campus.
My enigma is Scott Blair; where has hi kicking game gone; need I say more?
What’s going right? The offense.
What’s going wrong? The defense.
Prognosis for the second half – very exciting football and several nail biters due to GA Tech’s defense. I expect that GA Tech will win the ones that they’re supposed to win and go to another Bowl game, keeping their streak alive. Anything beyond that is anyone’s guess; that’s College football at its best.

rising stars – Embry Peeples and Egbuniwe have made some good plays recently. Will look for more.
falling star – haven’t noticed much from Lucas Cox recently. I’ll look for him Saturday.
enigma – Why did we have to wait for the beatdown in Miami to finally get this team focused after the UGA victory last season.
what’s going right – passing game is starting to look pretty effective
what’s going wrong – I’ll agree with kickoff coverage, which seems worse since we’ve kicked off a lot recently
prognosis for second half – every game is winnable if the team stays focused. Can not afford to lose focus versus Virginia, Duke, or Wake Forest

Here’s the record for VT-GT games:
1990: GT:6 VT:3 (Scott Sisson delivers)
2004: GT:20 VT:34 (VT 25 pt 4th Qtr rally)
2005: GT:7 VT:51 (Reggie Ball spends 5 days in hospital before the game)
2006: GT:38 VT:27 (GT dominates the game, even with 2 INTs)
2007: GT:3 VT:27 (GT without all 3 starting RBs, and 5 GT INTs)
2008: GT:17 VT:20 (3 bad GT TOs)
2008 stats:
GT: 387 Total Yds; 278 Rushing; 109 Passing
VT: 247 Total Yds; 199 Rushing; 48 Passing
FSU: 35 GT:28 in 1st half
FSU: 9 GT:21 in 2nd half
So, GT not only made adjustments, they made the CORRECT adjustments.
So far, MissSt has put up the most rushing yds vs GT-D, with 209.
I think the 2nd half adjustments on D in the FSU game
tells the biggest story.
FSU scored 35 pts. And then, could only score 9.

Good thing is we’re getting Reese and Egbuniwe back. They both will be starting at their respective positions. CPJ has said before that there have been many injuries that haven’t allowed the defense to jell. This could be part of the reason the players have looked so bad and out of position. Also, CPJ has admitted that the coaches are part of the problem as well.
I am confident the coaches will get this thing straightened out and have some starters back should help.

Is it just me or is VT’s defense not as fierce this year? They just don’t seem as dominate as in year’s past. There defense is only giving up 75 yds less a game than ours. I know our defense is looking pretty rough right now. I’m still not imressed with Taylor. Sure he’s looked good the last two game but who wouldn’t against them. Now Williams is another matter. We will definitely have to stop their running attack. Stop or slow it down and we will win. I do think our offense can score on their defense.

I disagree a little about how bad the defense is and has been. I played a great game vs. UNC, coming back from a lousy game vs. MIAMI who had a pretty good offense. They also made a good 2nd half comeback vs. FSU.
Now, if they lay an egg vs. VT this Saturday (30 or more points?) and look like the defense others think we have, then I’ll agree with the idea the defense is bad.
Personally I expect the coaches to come up with a good game plan on both sides of the ball and I expect Morgan Burnett to step it up!

Rise – Offense, pick your star there are so many.
Fall – Defense. When CPJ came in I was unhappy to hear he did not ask Tenuta to stay. I understand, they don’t run in the same circles and its tough keeping a coach that wants to be head coach on the staff (Look at FSU). But when Paul Johnson said he wants guys on defense flying to the ball, it made me think of our defense in the not so distant past with Tenuta. Yeah I know he’ll never be here again. And we did die sometimes from over blitzing…… but if you are looking for defense that flys to the ball, that was us when he was defensive coordinator. I wish DW the best and hope he can get something going. But you gotta admit we would stop ppl so much and then do nothing on offense back then. It will come around.

I know our defense hasn’t been playing all that great but when you compare what we did to last year stats it’s not that much difference. I don’t recall everyone complaining about last year’s defense as much. This year we’re only giving up 70 more ydspg. Only 52 more passing ydspg and rushing only 15 more ydspg. Scoring has only increased by 6 per game. I agree we need to get things settled down on defense but there’s still time to change those stats. Having some key missing players back can only can help the situation. The coaches seem to be determined to right this and I think they’ll find away to do it.

well said ……………………….. one team is (5-1), ranked with only loss coming on road at a top ten team running a “high school offense” with players nobody wanted & the other is (3-3), unranked already has a home loss & got pasted by an unranked team. the funny thing is the latter team always has some of the best recruits in the nation but still will end this season not winning a national championship spite being in the conference that has produced the most of them lately.

what’s going wrong-our o-line gets tired fast against big teams.
prognosis for second half- two losses, one to VT and one we shouldn’t lose, decent bowl bid, win over UGA

rising star is Burnette (linebacker from Macon), falling is Morgan (outside of 1st half Clemson…not dominating) {need his leadership}, enigma is why not more pitches to Dwyer (it seems very successful every time he gets the ball in that manner) {plus I would love to see a flea-flicker out of that occasionally}, that said offense[Right] is starting to jell & getting more players involved, [Wrong] no pressure on quarterback whatsoever……& final thoughts, defense almost certainly has to get better plus the remaing offenses aren’t as talented across the board as Clemson & Miami. Focus & execution could lead to memorable 2nd half.

The objective of a football team is to win games. With a 5-1 record, I’d go with a B+. I really thought that at the beginning of the season our secondary would be spectacular. We’ve had one db in particular really struggle. More push by our defensive line would help a lot though. Or, playing TJ Yates every week
No, I’m wrong. We deserve an A. We’ve come from behind twice to win games and that’s what separates winners (5-1) from losers (3-3).

Rising star: Josh Nesbitt. He has been a game changer this year.
Falling star: Roddy Jones. But, I think that is only due to his late start due to the wrist injury. I was excited to see him back to his normal game against FSU.
Enigma: Wolf Position. That position never lived up to its billing.
What’s going right: Offensive upjustments. We seem to be adjusting to defenses better this year.
What’s going wrong: Depth. We have some key positions with no depth and others with an abundance of talent. It will be nice to build some DL depth in the next couple of recruiting classes.
Prognosis for second half: 5-1 in the second half including a big win over UGA with a freshman quarterback.

Is Tech playing Big Bad Duke this year?? The ACC is pathetic. Tech should jump back to the SEC, where it belongs.
GT-fan4EVER!!
October 16th, 2009
9:14 am
rising star:
Nesbit: the FSU game was best performance I’ve seen by Tech QB since Joe Hamiliton. He took over the game, refused to loose, made up for Jones’ mistake, carried the ball the rest of 4th qtr, scored the game winning TD, and WILLED the win.
falling star:
Morgan Burrnet: He’s too full of himself, his INT stats are bloated (3 of 7 against JSU last year and 2 this year against a sorry UNC offense). He’s always beaten on coverage, and leaving the middle of field open (i.e. look at miami, M.S., and FSU games)
enigma:
The GT Kicking game.
what’s going right:
The Offense.
what’s going wrong:
Defense or lack their off. Since the Miami game in 2008, this unit has not done anything but get bailled out timely offense miscues, and turnovers. Here it is;
-UGA game in 2008, the UGA played worse than they did and couldn’t tackle. Really when does UGA give up an 18pt halftime lead.
-LSU pushed the GT around and look at the score
-JSU, thankfully Perrillo wasn’t playing otherwise they would’ve scored way more points.
-Clemson, GT needed a pass by the kicker, and punt return to hold on for a 3pt win
-Miami, go watch the tape, THEY DID NOT EVEN TOUCH!!!!!! their QB!
-UNC, offense is really really bad. who else have they beaten?? they needed a questionable holding call to get win vs Uconn.
-Miss. State, forced turovers yes, but they allowed to their Offense to run and down field all day!
-FSU, beat them selfs by dropping passes and running into eachother. if don’t believe me go watch tape of second half.
prognosis for second half
VT – Loss: Like always, VT will find ways to win this game, and have even less respect for GT (if that is possible).
UVA – Win.
WF – Loss: they’ll win a shoot out, and their QB will have a field day with this Defense.
Duke – Win, but close.
UGA – Win, but close.
Hello Champs Sports Bowl!!
CPJ needs to do something about this defense or get someone that can, because this SMU guy hasn’t been impressive, and this Defense is getting worse and worse!!
Tech Tony

Rising star: dead heat—Peeples and Wright
Falling star: I thought Lucas Cox would play more than he has
Enigma: Edward Nigma, or E. Nigma, the secret identity of The Riddler. Riddle me this: if Wommack doesn’t right the ship in a hurry, will he have a job here next year?
What’s gone right: getting everyone back on the same page after the loss to Miami thanks to CPJ
Whst’s gone wrong: Defense obviously…that and UGA stinking up the joint which takes some of the fun out of smacking those clowns around.
Prognosis: If Tech pulls out a W tomorrow against VPI like they are capable of, and then avoid a letdown the following week at UVA where the Jackets have historically not done so well, then I see a big time roll to round out the season.

Rising Star: Nesbitt and Anthony Allen. Allen *never* botches the big play, he grabs it with both hands and shoves it down their throats. I could watch him paint the sideline all day.
Falling Star: Dave Wommack. My first instinct was they shouldn’t let Tenuta go. I beginning to think that was the right one.
Could you imagine if this team had a fearsome defense? Legit NC contenders.
I just hope CPJ wants to hang around long enough to slap Beamer, Shannon, and Butch Davis around some. I think he will.

The offense is looking good but most of our big plays are on the perimiter. Nesbit has become our off tackle threat. BUT What has happened to the B-Back dive??? Teams tried to stop Dwyer last year by clogging up the middle but we were able to find ways to break it up the middle anyway. We were a triple option base team with the B-Back dive being the primary threat that made the rest of the option click.

Rising STAR for TECH has to be Willie Martinez at UGA.
Falling STAR for TECH has to be C Mark Richt at UGA.
Enigma is Coach PAUL JOHNSON for every other team he plays.
Wrong is Womack and the TECH D.
Right is BAYBAY in all parts of his game.
2nd 1/2: A little scared of the Hokies and the Bulldogs. VT is good but we can win. UGA is bad and going to lose to the Gators and they are pi$$ed. The Jackets need to HIT and HURT the Dawgs First and Fast. I fear 10-2.

Here’s my take on it…YES, I want to Georgia Tech to win this game BADLY!!! However, if we do lose, we still have A LOT to play for, and just humor me for a second:
1. We STILL have an opportunity to BEAT UGA(Y) for the second year in a row, which hasn’t been done in 9 years!
2. And this is a “big one” in my book, we STILL have a chance to finish the season with at least 10 WINS, which hasn’t been done, also in 10 years. Plus, we have a good chance o f STILL winning 11 games, which hasn’t been done at Georgia Tech since 1990!!
3. Even if we lose Saturday, we can STILL finish in the Top 25 or maybe even Top 15.
4. We are just one win away from being bowl eligible for the 13th CONSECUTIVE Season!!
5. If we finish with 9 wins or more, that PROVES to the college football world that Georgia Tech is a serious college football contender now. I figure if we can average 9 wins a season under Paul Johnson, then that STILL gives us a shot at ANY goal the team has, i.e..Beat UGA(Y), ACC Championship, BCS Bowl, possible National Championship.
So even if we lose Saturday, which by the way, I hope we don’t, but if we do, then we STILL have a lot to play for and our program is STILL going in the right direction!!
