Thought you might like this

Bob Davie, now ESPN analyst former coach of Notre Dame, was gracious enough to call me today to talk about Saturday’s game against Florida State.

More on the majority of our conversation in the Saturday advance in the paper, or on Friday’s ajc.com.

Anyway, he expressed his keen appreciation and respect for Paul Johnson and the option, going so far to say that it is the offense he would run should he ever get back into coaching. Remember that he went against CPJ for several years when he was at Navy.

I’m paraphrasing his next comments:
If the offense is running right, it could be Florida State’s defense or the Pittsburgh Steeler’s, it doesn’t matter.

Defenders hate going against it more than any other offense.

Thinking about it more on Thursday, I still can’t figure out how this game is going to go, but I’m of two minds: Tech is either going to thump Florida State, but good. Or FSU is going to win 42-40.
I thought MSU would be a high-scoring game, and I thought Tech would handle North Carolina. I thought Tech would handle Miami, however, so it goes to show what I know (like you need more ammunition that I’m not the sharpest knife in the drawer).

His 01 numbers are not horrendous…that’s just plain not true. Horrendous would be barely 50% with only 2500 yards and the TD/INT ratio. What it shows, is that he had more difficulty getting into the endzone and had made slightly more errant throws (looking at our team…probably was forced into more situations from behind.

I bet you (and that would take some looking up), he was one of the better QBs in the ACC. You can’t tell me that throwing for nearly 65% and over 250 yards per game is horrible. He may have been more interception prone in 2001, but he definitely moved the ball a lot. Brett Favre was known for being interception prone and he’s one of the greatest NFL QBs of all time….

The Ted Roof defenses were abysmal! His defenses were the big reason why were not an elite team in 1999 and maybe even 2000. I think in 1999 are offense averaged 40+ points a game and our defense allowed about the same….

True that…I’m hoping Nesbitt gets 55% of his throws and throws for 140+ and a TD.

His numbers passing wise went down in 01. He had an extra game in 01. Played in 12, not 11, like he did in 00. You think 250 yards is good? It is for GT. Cause we run the ball. Godsey through the ball around 40 times a game. Averaging 250 is bad. Add to that his lack of td’s. 18 tds? That’s 1.5 a game. And 1 int a game. Think about it. It is horrendous for someone who passes the ball so much. Look at it this way. Nesbitt threw for 266 last week and only threw 14 passes. Godsey would pass 40 times a game to get that.

I am hoping last week wasn’t a fluke and our passing game is starting to take form. FSU’s secondary has been bad this year giving up tons of big plays. Hopefully we’ll get a few more bombs on them.

It’s really simple for me, if Tech continues to use the passing game like last week, Tech could be a top ten team in a year or two. My greatest complaint about PJohnson was trying to be one dimensional. Actually Florida’s offense isn’t a lot different, except they’ve always passed out of the spread formation.

FSU is always tough, but 2 in a row is possible! In Perry GA, only mention about GT was on the weather forecast for Tallahassee. More coverage in Orlando?? All you Dawgs who have nasty comments about GT need to get off and worry about the Dawgs!

Can someone tell me what happened on the first kickoff? I just started watching the game but saw some mention of that by the commentators.

PW, the tech guys clearly recovered a fumbled kick off return by the criminoles but the ref was feeling all tingly with Bobby so he gave them the ball back.

That first KO is not reviewable??? Replay clearly showed, we recovered the fumble and had possession and down.
I know FSU had 400+ ypg for last 4 games, but are they THAT good or does our defense stink?

Hey UGAG: Now, who is the best team in the state of Georgia? It’s GT!
5-1 to your sorry azz 3-3 record. Josh Nesbitt is the man and Joe Cox sucks azz! THWG! See you on the flats. UGAG goes down to GT this year. Your team is a joke!

Tech should have challenged the call that there wasn’t a fumble, but they didn’t. Somebody in the Tech booth wasn’t doing their job and watching the replay.

proud of my jackets, excuse me OUR Jackets, we as fans deserve to route for a good team in this town, and with a coach like Paul Johnson he has given us a reason to believe in our team and that is something to be proud of as a tech fan. I know the defense looked dreadful the first half and somewhat respectable the second but at least it was a against a QB who has been on fire most of the year. The mutts down in athens gave up 300+ yards and four TD against one of the worst QB in the SEC. Either way we have to play better on defense this weekend against VA Tech or its gonna be a long day on the flats. But i give tons of credit to the offense the past three weeks, they have been truly unstoppable. FSU didnt have a clue of how to stop us last night. They were one of the teams i worried about in the ACC against this offense because of the athleticism and the speed, but CPJ has found a way to slow down the speedsters on the opposing defense, or use that speed against them. That is what make this offense so explosive. Nesbitt is running it to perfection minus a fumble or two and the backs are finds holes while the receivers are blocking they’re butts off down field. Lets really get behind this team Jacket fans this could be one special year.

GO JACKETS!!! AND THWG

Doug, if you have an “in” with Bob Davie how about calling him before he covers our game with VT and ask him, out of respect for our coach and our program, to quit referring to our offensive scheme as the triple option! I have heard Coach Johnson talking to the media on countless occasions saying that we run the Spread Option and the Triple Option is just a small piece of what we have. If we can’t get the “expert” color guy to reference it correctly on national TV we don’t have a chance of getting it communicated correctly.
