Yes, Georgia Tech defeated Mississippi State 38-7 last season in a game that wasn’t even that close, if that’s possible.
But this year’s version of MSU isn’t the same as last year’s.
This team has the ability to both run, and stop the run.
That’s what people said about North Carolina before last week’s game, as well.
But the difference is Mississippi State’s proved that against teams that are actually decent, unlike the Tar Heels (with the exception of ECU).
The Bulldogs have held three of their past four opponents to 194, 157 and 263 yards. That includes LSU, now considered to be a top 5 team.
It doesn’t include Auburn, which rolled up &^%$&^%^% yards.
What was that? What did you say?
Auburn rolled up….589 yards on 83 plays.
Does that mean anything for Tech’s chances of leaving Starkville with a win?
Well, potentially, it could mean a lot.
The Tigers rushed for 390 yards with their version of the option.
But the Bulldogs seem to have gotten things fixed in time for last week’s game against LSU. The Tigers could only muster 30 yards on 31 carries. That’s the mostly same team that rushed for 161 yards against the Jackets in the Chick-fil-A Bowl last season.

Because of technical errors, which I think are mine (new computer, new programs we are using) there was supposed to be a quote from Dan Voss in the notebook in Wednesday’s paper.
I asked him to talk about the routine of playing Saturday games, as compared to what Tech has been doing through the season’s first four games.
To paraphrase, he doesn’t mind a Thursday game or two, but enjoys Saturdays more for social and academic reasons. He said he likes to relax with friends and family on Sundays, something he couldn’t do the weeks of Thursday games because the team was practicing then.
He also said it makes a big difference in the classroom. Saturday games mean he doesn’t have to miss a lot of classes, nor does he have to miss review sessions, etc.

Tech will be fine against MSU. With the way they played this past Saturday and the fact that they had a fire burning in the gut to get that last touchdown and then hold UNC in the final minutes speaks volumes about the team’s turn around in attitude. They are ready to take care of business now. Go Jackets!!

I think we will be ok. We excuted 50 times better against UNC than we had in any other game this season. Nesbit is still missing some reads on the option but for the most part looked vastly improved. He also looked better passing the football. Nesbit should have had even better numbers through the air as Anthony Allen missed what would have been a long strike for a touchdown, the throw was not perfect but it was a play that should have been made. Dwyer looked very good, still waiting on him to break a 50 or 60 yarder though. Those two 30 yarders were really nice though. The draw play that we added and the quick option to Dwyer was really nice. The defense was exceptional. MSU scares me a little, but I think if we execute and play like we are truly capable of playing it should be a good night hopefully setting the tone for the rest of the season.

Mississippi State is not as “good” as advertised. LSU just isn’t as good as folks think they are. Mullen doesn’t have what needs for the spread yet. And for some reason, I think Tech is now starting to cruise downhill. Tech 35, Miss. St. 14.

This is a trap game. Miss State coming off a high of almost beating the Tigers. MSU looking for revenge. MSU having a new coach who has them believing…and GT coming off a high against UNC then going on the road to a decent MSU team. I predict that GT gets beat. I’m only saying this out of pure educated notions and facts. This screams “trap” if I’ve never heard it before. I’m a GT fan thru and thru but also know my team’s limitations and I’m starting to pick up on a pattern. Remember the UVA game last year? Same set up, but compounding the problem is going on the road. Go JACKETS…but don’t be surprised if they lose this game. If it were scheduled differently, maybe I’d have a different opinion.

I’ve been trying to tell anyone who will listen the reason Tech lost to Miami so badly is because we were tired. Not only did they play 3 games in 13 days, but they also had class at Georgia Tech! I am a Tech alum (MGT ‘07), and I was also a member of the Tech Crew team. I know exactly what it’s like; you practice for two plus hours a day, five days a week, with “voluntary” workouts in the mornings, three hour labs, and at least 12 hours of classes with mandatory reading and other work that takes at least the equivalent of class time. And that was for the easiest major Tech offers!
Getting on a regular schedule can only help keep the legs fresh, particularly for the defensive secondary. The less class time they miss, they more rested they are, the better they will play on Saturday. This Tech team has as much talent as any I’ve seen in the last 10 years. You can credit some of that to Gailey and Giff Smith’s recruiting, but also to Johnson for teaching them how to perform at their best.
Each opponent, MSU included, should be taken seriously, and will be, with Johnson at the helm. There’s no overlooking MSU. Last week’s game was the first game we’d played on any decent amount of rest. Look for more of the same this Saturday.
What’s the Good Word?

Gee Tee, you make a great point there. However, I truly believe this is a totally different Tech team than what we have had in the past. If Chan Gailey was still coach I would say “yeah this is a loss” but I think Paul Johnson is much better at getting teams mentally prepared to play teams. At this point, I think that Miami taught us a very valuable lesson and I think that we are starting to realize the potential that we have. This could become a very special season as long as we approach every game as a do or die situation. We have a very small, if any margin for error and I think that Tech always plays better when backed into a corner. Again, very good points and Im not saying that this is a definite win for Tech but I really think we will be mentally and physically up to the challenge. GO JACKETS!!!

Aha, good point. Not taking anything away from Miami, they kicked our a$$, but if we had of played a normal schedule to start the season rather than 3 games in 13 days it would have been a different game. Im not saying we would have won but it would not have been a beat down like it was. Miami is very fast and athletic but we proved last year that didnt matter. One game at a time. The jackets will be fine. It doesnt matter how many people claim they have figured out our “high school” offense, the defense still has to execute to stop it. We “figured out” UNC’s “pro style” offense this past week, but do you hear anybody saying Butch Davis should switch to a spread offense or some type of gimmick offense? Dont think so, let all the haters say what they want to, we have an excellent coach, excellent system, and very good group of players. With those things in place the future is looking very bright in Atlanta. Go Jackets!!

The Yellow Jackets going on the road is not as concerning as it was under the prior coaching staff. Coach Paul Johnson is a great game coach, and the team is now back on a regular schedule after surviving the football triathlon in their first 3 games. Georgia Tech wins in a good contest against the SEC Western Division Bulldogs.

Midnight rambler, I agree the officials could use a major overhaul. It is so disappointing to watch your team play so hard just to keep continuously getting jerked around by officials. That situation at the end of the half most certainly cost us points. We could have easily won that game by 30 points. There is no excuse for the poor officiating. That call of a completion by UNC down the sideline in the first half where the ball obviously hit the ground was obsurd as well, thanks to replay we got that one back though. If memory serves me corectly we also got hurt by a bogus pass interference call late in the game, I believe on the drive that UNC scored on. Something needs to be done, I have seen better officiating in the recreation leagues.

Gee Tee, Miss State is NOT coming off a high from beating LSU. If anything, getting to the one yard line and being unable to punch it in for the win is more debilitating than it it is encouraging. That said, this is still an extremely dangerous game, and we could easily lose it if we revert back to the team that played Miami, or even Clemson.

Good points, but them stopping LSU and being able to stop the run has nothing to do with us. Miami could was good against the run last year. Techs run is totally different from other teams. LSU last year and Miami this year dominated a sleeping team. If we come out and execute and with some intensity on offense and defense we will take care of business. The problem will be us not them. If there is a problem. The viewing of this game is what sucks. I don’t have comcast and I shouldn’t have to pay extra or watch on my computer to see two local teams.

The Mississippi State game is very similar to Miami in that Tech will be playing a team on the road that it whipped last year coming off an emotional ACC home game. Has Tech learned from the Miami game and will there be the intensity and desire needed to win? If this team played with intensity and desire they will win this game. Wasn’t Miss St. supposed to have a strong rush defense last year? Didn’t they hold Auburn to like 50 yards rushing in a 3-2 game? Then this year the WarEagles run up nearly 600? I look for Tech to win big.
Of course, this is CFB. Who saw FSU losing to SF? So by doing some extrapolation, South Florida beats Okla. by 30?

A little perspective here.
Ole Miss was ranked #4 in AP, before an UNRANKED USC team beat them. Ole Miss dropped AAAAALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL the way down to #21 in AP.
The “generic” conclusion that can be drawn is Ole Miss was WAAAAAAAYYYYYYYY over-rated. Only Houstin Nutt himself is even MORE over-rated.
The ONE TEAM in the “CURRENT” AP Top 10 looking the DECIDEDLY MOST over-rated has to be #4 ranked LSU. By NO MEANS is this the LSU of 2003-2008. All of Saban’s recruits are gone from LSU now, and it is showing. At this point, I actually expect u-gag to beat LSU on Saturday. Then, you’re REALLY gonna see the heat turned up on Les Miles.
As ESPN noted in the LSU-MissSt game recap, LSU had 30 yds rushing on 31 carries, against the “88th-best” rush defense. Seriously, how can this LSU team be a “Top 4″ team? Not trying to slight MissSt, but we’re not talking 30 yds rushing agaisnt Bama here. Auburn put 390 yds rushing on MissSt. So, the LSU-MissSt game looks more like an indictment of ust how bad LSU is, rather than how great MissSt is.
So, be forewarned, when u-gag beats LSU, all the mutt fans will be in here crowing…”we beat the #4 team. We’re awesome. woo-hoo”…it will all be BS. How far down do you think LSU will fall? down to #15, #20 ?? Like I said, LSU is WAAAAYYYYY over-rated. If LSU actually beats u-gag, its gonna mean the mutts are WAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYY over-rated.
CPJ and Urban Meyer and Mullen are all actually good friends. It is well-known that CPJ, Meyers, and Mullen have had many discussions about CPJ’s offense in the recent past. So, while I think Mullen will have a good game plan for GT, I dont think his defense will be able to execute well. Looking the other way, Mullen was the OC at Florida and knows how to run a good spread-offense and has proven he can score points.
Overalll, I think Mullen would want to use the passing game in the first half, and the run game in the second half. GT still has question marks in the pass D. While MissSt may score more points than UNC, UNC has a MUCH BETTER Defense, as does Clemson and Miami.
Overall, I still see GT with a comfortable win here, maybe 36-23.

I am not convinced GT’s youth and depth issues on the d-line have been solved. If the offense keeps the defense off the field like last week it will certainly help. But if Nesbitt and the gang have a few 3 & outs strung together the depth will hurt the defense.

The loss to Miami was a blessing in disguise If I may say so. Tech was settling into
a mindset that a less than 100% effort was enough to win. Well that game certainly woke everyone up including us the fans. Tech needs to bring its “A” each and every week.If they do so It will win and win handily like they will this Saturday in Starksville. And we have to stop complaining about the referees, these calls will even out over the course of the year. Remember the call against Clemson which gave us the win, for example. I believe that from here in, Tech will be ready for each and every game, I’d like to see us ending up at 11-1 make that 12-1 including a BCS bowl win.

When you look at replays of Tech games notice how poorly our gaurds block, and how often their man is involved in the tackle. If we could get better blocking inside our option game would be unstoppable. If our blocking doesn’t inprove not only will we struggle to win, but Nesbitt will eventually go down with an injury and we will be in a world of hurt.

If Tech wins, the SEC loyalists will say it’s because Missy State sucks. If Tech loses, the SEC loyalists will say that this is proof that the ACC sucks. And if Tech won every game left on their schedule and went 3-0 against the SEC, the SEC loyalists would blame the officiating.
There’s remarkably little intelligent discourse here.

You call last season’s come from behind win against an injury riddled team to win by 3 a “stomping”? Now on the other hand, I can tell you how it feels to squash Wreck. 51-7…now that’s a stomping. Anyway, as far as this week….the Jackets should do well I think against Miss St. but I doubt they win. They will be looking ahead to the squashing they are going to get at Va Tech, who by my calculations is a good 70 or 80 points better than Yech. Darindawg, good bets.
VT was scary good against Miami because it was POURING rain and in Bleaksburg. I think VT would win in a much closer contest on a neutral field. Miami’s win against us was impressive but as pointed out we were playing a 3rd game in 13 days. Only 2 days differnce from normal but the 2 Thursday nighters in a row are trouble. DRad should have said thanks but no thanks to that schedule.
I think LSU wins Sat but would not be surprised to see the Dawgs win it. Home field means a lot. And the Dawgs just keep pulling W’s out their hanky. They could easily be 0-4 but gotta give Richt credit for getting the W.
Not sure about Miami v OKla. If Bradford is back it will be close. If not then you might be right.
And the Bowden era was pushed to the edge last week. Did you see his press conference afterwards? Surprised old grandad sitting in his easy chair wondering what happened. “They were a lot better than what I thought they would be.” Obviously Bowden had his team thinking the same thing. Let’s hope BC wins and when we go to Tallahasse they are completley demoralized.

In 2007, LSU went 10-2 regular season. In 2008, LSU went 7-5 regular season. Stories out of Lousisana already had Les Miles on the hot seat at the end of 2008.
His job was on the line at end of 2008. Its REALLY on the line now.
This is an absolute “MUST WIN” game for Les Miles.
LSU Schedule after u-gag includes:
Florida, Auburn, Alabama, Ole Miss, and Ark.
LSU has NO SHOT against Florida or Bama. Long odds against beating AU. More even odds vs. Ole Miss & Ark.
Consider how bad LSU looked vs. MissSt, as compared to how Auburn DESTROYED MissSt. LSU win over Vandy was not impressive: 5 trips to red-zone with 2 TDs & 3 FGs…against Vandy. LSU beat Vandy 23-9. MissSt beat Vandy 15-3.
LSU has looked AWFUL. And a #4 AP ranking for LSU is LAUGHABLE.
But, so is the whole BCS…but, I digress.
Miles needs this win in a FAR WORSE way, than CMR needs it.
LSU escapes with a narrow win.

The 12 vs 13 day thing cracks me up. Just like a Dawg FAN to count like that. You can’t count both the first and last day. If you really want to get technical, it’s like 12 days, 4 hours (give or take) from kick off to kick off. I say “FAN” because I know UGA grads can count. My wife is one and damn proud of it. We are actually heading to Athens to watch the LSU game this Saturday. I usually wear black or white because I jusr can’t bring myself to wear red, not sure if I even own any.
As for GT’s game this weekend, all I can say is FOCUS and EXECUTION. The rest takes care of itself.

Wow MuttinLex, you sure do a great Urban Meyer impression
“wwwaaahhhh, our QB had the flu, waaaahhhhh”
Grow up cry baby. There is a big difference between admitting that our players couldn’t handle a complex defensive scheme (e.g. Tech against Miami) than blaming a lackluster performance on a phantom flu that had already come and gone. If he was that sick he wouldn’t have played. If he was even somewhat sick he wouldn’t have played nearly the entire game. If he was even sick at all he wouldn’t have thrown all 30 passes uog attempted.
Conclusion: he wasn’t sick.
Compare that with what Tech fans are saying. Our players couldn’t execute the wolf defense. Are we making excuses? No. We lost to Miami in part because we gave up 33 points. We gave up 33 points in large part because we executed poorly – DBacks were out of position all game and we got little, if any, pressure on the QB.

If he wan’t capable of playing QB, he would not have thrown for 8 TD’s the next 3 games. I didn’t buy the flu thing either after the 1st game but he proved me wrong. I ate the crow.
I told some Tech folks that the 4-2-5 was to mask the d-line deficiencies and they told me I was wrong. OOPS.
The choice to play the 4-2-5 was the coaching staff’s. The choice to play a QB who had lost 9 pounds in a week was the coaching staff’s. Both can be said to be excuses or facts, depending on your perspective.

Are mutt fans really that dumb? Do you think we care about St Simons? He/She is most likely someone in Junior High who has nothing better to do than post on mutt blogs. I’m sorry he riles y’all up, but you need to consider the following:
1) We have no control over St Simons.
2) We don’t care that St Simons is trolling on your blogs.
3) If you ignored St Simons, St Simons would likely go away.
4) We are not St Simons, therefore there is no “lesson” for us to learn.
5) If you justify acting like a 7 year old and trolling Tech blogs because some other 7 year old is trolling mutt blogs, then that is just pathetic. I expect more out of grownups, especially graduates from as fine an institution as uog.
6) The fact you don’t see St Simons on here shows that he/she is not really a Tech fan. Why else would he/she never post on here. I occasionally post on the uog blog because a) I watch uog football so I know something about it and b) I occasionally actually cheer for uog (e.g. Ok St., Arkansas). The vast majority of my posts, however, are on Tech related articles. Have you noticed that St Simons posts are usually just a score followed by some lols or hahahas? St Simons is just a troll, probably the same person as one of the alleged mutt fans who troll our boards.

We own the SUC, look at our record last year against your sorry AZZ conference. We didn’t really focus against LSU because we deserved a much better bowl. Look how we stomped the rest of your conference. You only have one or possibly two decent teams this year. Alabama is your best and we could take them to the wood shed. Dawg (west) – We heard the same predictions before the UNC game. No excuses about the Miami loss, just facts. Tech played 3 tough games in 12 days and 4 in 21 days, 2 against nationally ranked teams, plus Clemson which some picked to win the ACC plus Jax State which nearly beat FSU who clobberred nationally ranked BYU. Also, Tech student-athletes actually have to go to class and study. This was a very rough schedule for any team. You may say the ACC is weak, yet the ACC won 6 of 10 against the SEC during the regular season last year icluding 45-42.

Geez, Buzzfan… said: “Evidently you can neither read nor count – and Tech grads are supposed to be good in math – eveidently you guys are not counting the first game against JState as a day.” BUZZFAN IS CORRECT – 3 GAMES IN 12 DAYS. From Sat to Sun is one 24 hr. period = 1 day not two, idiot.

I think LSU was looking ahead last week to Georgia. Auburn handled Miss. State pretty well. This new coach is going to be a winner but I think he needs his own personel to pull it off. Tech had a freak showing in Miami because of a schedule of three games in a short span. Now both teams are coming off big games and are pretty even on rest. The one factor is home field advantage, which played some in last week’s almost upset, but Miss. St. couldn’t get them 4 inches in two plays at the goal line.

Ohmygod! Dawgies – go watch Sesame Street & watch “The Count” (”I Love to Count Things!”) since you obviously need 1st grade arithmetic lessons. Here we go:
Dates of Games: Jax State, 9/5-Sat; Clemson -9/10 Th, Miami – 9/17 Th, UNC – 9/26 -Sat.
Remedial Math Class for Dumb Dawgies: 9/5 to 9/6 =1 day, 9/7=2 days, 9/8=3, 9/9=4, 9/10=5, 9/11=6, 9/12=7, 9/13=8, 9/14 =9, 9/15 = 10, 9/16 = 11, 9/17 = 12 days.
SUMMARY: FROM JAX STATE ON 9/5 TO MIAMI GAME ON 9/17 =12 DAYS!!
It might be too much for your dawgie pea brains to handle, but if you continue counting to the UNC game, then you will see that Tech not only played 3 tough games in 12 days, but 4 tough games in 21 days, or 3 weeks. This plus the fact that Tech student-athletes, unlike the dawgies, actually have to go to class & study for real exams, made this a truly rough schedule as mentioned above – 2 ranked teams + Clemson some picked to win the ACC + Jax State which nearly beat FSU which walloped #9 BYU 54-28 on their field.
If we had played Miami on a regular Sat., I think we would have won.
