OK, Georgia Tech has a non-conference road game this week against a team it destroyed last year. And it’s at night, which few like.
Next week, a huge ACC road game, again at night.
The week after that, an even bigger ACC home game, which I would guess will also be at night.
It would be easy to say that this week’s venture to Starkville to take on Mississippi State is what is often called a “trap” game.
[that was sarcasm]
Tech coach Paul Johnson said this game isn’t dangerous because of what’s coming with FSU, followed by Virginia Tech.
It’s dangerous because the Bulldogs are a good team, so sayeth the coach.
LSU defeated MSU, but the Bulldogs held them to 30 yards rushing, and 263 yards overall.
—————–
Scott Blair said last week was a just a bad week, and he’s going to be better. Johnson said he wants him to stop thinking, and start kicking. More on that in the story in the print ajc.
———–
Sean Bedford, honored by the ACC this week as co-offensive lineman, said that even though they rushed for more than 300 yards against North Carolina, they still have lots of room to improve. He said stopping penetration by the defensive line is a place to start.

This team and the coaching staff are experienced enough that we shouldn’t fall victim to a trap game. We need to look no further ahead than the next game on the schedule – ever. During a game, we need to look no further ahead than the next play – ever. That is was the truly great teams do and it is one of the qualities that make them great teams to begin with.

I agree with CPJ. Almost anytime you play an SEC school at their place, it isn’t going to be easy. Our players better be ready for some physical football. If we play aggressive and execute the blocking and tackling, I think we will be o.k. BUT, and I mean BUT, I believe Mullins offense is going to be a tougher test than UNC’s was.

With our D, any offense scares me. And Bedford is right on.. We have to do something to stop the penetration of the Defensive line on the offensive side. For the last three weeks, it’s looked like the Defensive tackles were living in our backfield.
No way any game should be a trap game for this team.. Look at what Miami did to us after we handled them easily lst year. We need to stay focused and keep improving on both sides of the ball.
The team showed a lot of heart bouncing back last week after a major beatdown in Miami. Josh was a true warrior.. Say what you want about his pass accuracy and his reads on the option (I have been very critical of both), the kids is a fighter, and never gives up. You gotta love that.
Good luck jackets!!

Miss. State ain’t North Carolina….. It is in Starkville, at night and it is payback time. Tech’s best motivation is not to embarrass the already pitiful ACC by losing to a 2 and 2 unranked SEC cellar dweller. Of course LSU had 5 losses and was unranked last year and both Ga and FLA had put up 50 on them. Tech managed 3. This looks like upset central to me.

Bulldog Trap, Really? You are going to start talking smack? It must be something in the sec DNA to just think you have the right to talk smack when there is absolutely nothing your team has done on the field. Even when they loose they still talk smack. The pups talked smack the day after Tech hung 45 on them? Trap must be one of the uga butt sniffers. At least they have had winning records. Surely this can’t be an msu dawg talking smack.

1) This will be a VERY tough game for Tech and coming out of Starkville with a win will not be an easy task.
2) MSU just took LSU to the wire and with some decent play calling at the end of the game WOULD HAVE BEATEN THEM.
3) The MSU offense doesn’t “scare” some of you??? Well it’s essentially Florida’s offense….yes, THAT Florida….they racked up 374 yards againts an LSU defense, and they average 356 per game. It better scare you.
This is a night game in an SEC venue. It’s one week before a HUGE game for Tech in Tallahassee and two weeks before and even BIGGER game vs. Virginia Tech. MSU has a new coach, a new attitude, and some talent. The best intangible going for Tech this week is if MSU has some “losers limp” after the LSU loss, but you can’t count on that.
Personally, I give Tech a 1 in 4 chance to win in Starkville.

LSU is probably not that good ( ie they’re not top 5, probably top 25) so its hard to judge whether MSU is all that good based on its close game with LSU…msu has a win at vandy and a loss to auburn…..i’d say they’re very average…..just the kind of team that can beat GT……hope the blocking schemes and techniques continue to improve with GT’s Oline……not sure if we can’t count on nesbitt’s arm…….watching nesbitt pass occasionally gives me the feeling i’m watching a larger version of reggie and when i see d. thomas make catches of passes thrown in his general direction i think of a smaller (not much) version of CJ…….mixed emotions to say the least……..here’s hoping the O-line and WRs block well, that nesbitt calls his own number a little less often in the running game, and PJ adds a new wrinkle to the passing game…..here’s my suggestion…..how about a fake dive to draw the LB’s in and a quick drop and pass to a TE who slips into the middle behind the LBs……maybe even a tebow type jump pass after faking the run up the middle…..go jackets

Porty, that would be ranked, not rated, and if you think that means something at this point in the season, you haven’t been paying attention this year. I’d agree that State has been pretty irrelevant lately, something you are familiar with being in the ACC. One thing you may want to consider is that your team will not be playing the team from last year. If last year is still relevant to you, then examine the most recent common opponent for Tech and MSU. You’re probably right, there is no way Tech can lose this game.

Dawg (west) – I heard about the tickets yesterday and was shocked. Don’t know what happened. I will say this about your Bulldogs – glad we get you this year and not next year, when I suspect you will be making the SEC West even more interesting, with a year of Mullen’s offense and some of his recruits. As I told the Maroon faithful in our office – RESPECT ALL, FEAR NONE. This one should be quite a game, but I believe we can pull it off.

the defense plays a similar offense every day in practice, because MSU runs midline, veer, triple, and belly just like we do. They do it out of the shotgun and throw more often though.
Tech Alum 08

Cox – not sure who you mean by ‘we’ since your handle is the name of UGA’s QB, but I don’t think you mean Tech. MSU may run versions of the option, but running out of the shotgun and throwing more are a far cry from what Tech does. It’s the four-headed monster of QBs, BBs, and ABs hitting the line of scrimmage fast from under center that makes OUR offense so unique.
To Dawg (west) – I agree, we’re not playing the same team as last year, but this very article says that while MSU is usually known for solid defense (last year’s team wasn’t), this year’s edition struggles a little bit more in that area…sounds like a new team with the same problems.
That said, you might remind some of your Bulldog friends that this isn’t the same team as last year either.
I know plenty of people going to the game, and I hope they act with the same class and respect as the MSU fans who came to campus last year. Your fan base was truly a class act and I appreciated that they weren’t what we’ve come to know as typical SEC fans.

First of all GREAT WIN Saturday.
Secondly, yes the kicking game was subpar, but come on guys, let’s give the guy a break. I have been reading a lot about this situation since Saturday, so I decided to do a little FACT FINDING.
1. Blair was a prefered walk-on from Calhoun, Ga. As a true freshman he won the kickoff job, and helped the team turn the kickoff defense team from 119th in the nation for 2 consectutive years to # 1 at the end of the regular season (#2 after bowl games)
2. As a Soph he earned both the kicking and punting job. Struggled early with FG’s (1-5), but CPJ thought there were other issues with snap/hold. Made change with holder and kicker finished 11-14. Although he did not hit over 40, he was the second most accurate kicker in the NCAA inside the 40, missing only his first attempt of the season.
– Did not miss a FG in a game decided by 3 points or less, including UGA
– As a punter he was actually 10th in the NCAA after the 6th game of the season in gross punting, struggled after that….maybe tired, maybe to much attn on FG’s????
3. As a JR starts off strong in first 3 games handling only FG’s and kickoffs, going 5-7, including 3-3 in tight game with Clemson. Then he had a bad game against UNC. Had he ONLY been as accurate as he had been in the last 14 consectutive games, he would be 8-10 instead of 6-10.
4. Even with his bad week, take a look at the acc stats after last week, Blair is:
– 6th in FG %. Not great, but last year’s 2nd team acc and pre-season 1st team all-acc is 9th, AND only 4 acc kickers have made kick over 40 yards…2 of those are not in the top 6 in FG %
– 4th in kickoff defense
– Tied for 4th in scoring- ALL positions. Only GT player in top 10
– Tied for 2nd in scoring- Kickers only
– Tied for 2nd in FG’s made per game
5. He had a bad week. Come on guys, who hasn’t. Even Tiger has a bad day, and he is the best in THE WORLD at what he does….didn’t he miss the cut in the british open?
6. He seems to take FULL responsibility for his performance. No excuses and realizes he let everyone down and knows he needs to get it going again. I like that
7. CPJ has stated several times last year and during spring that special teams would improve. Same acc stats show we have improved in all areas of special teams, including FG kicking. By the way # 1 in punt returns and # 2 in punting gross average. I think CPJ knows what is going on and will work to fix this as well.
Bottomline is he had a bad day. We all have had one. From what I have seen from the stands and what I have read, he seems to have a lot of determination and desire to compete. He seems to take poor performance personally. I for one like that. I think just like Josh, he will take the negatives and use them as motivation. I am pulling for him and all the other guys. They will all struggle some from time to time, but I have confidence in this team.

“m” it is obvious that you checked your brain at the door. The SEC is the weakest it’s ever been, you must be struggling to get your IQ up into double digits if you believe that. Last time I checked the SEC had 3 teams in the top 5 and the ACC had 0 teams in the top 5. The SEC has 5 teams in the top 25 and the ACC has 2 teams in the top 25. In the Coaches poll (used for the BCS standings)UGA is ranked 14 and GT isn’t even in the top 25. Finally the ACC is 0-2 against the SEC so far this year and after Saturday will be 0-3.

So when teck loses to the worst of the SEC that will be SEC 3 ACC 0. Then we probably won’t hear from your ugly face again.

I don’t see this being a trap game. If we were undefeated, then it would be a trap game. With our 1 loss, we shouldn’t be taking anyone lightly for a while. msu suffered a major letdown in their game last week. They def should have pulled that one out and they will most likely have some lingering effects from that game. They played about as well as they could and just could not finish. I do believe that will affect msu’s team’s morale and their play next week. I don’t believe the game will be a cake walk like last year, but if auburn can put up 300+ rushing on them we should be able to do better. No doubt about it, it will be tough playing on the road against a sec team, so we must come out and play like we did against unc if we want to guarantee ourselves a win. Don’t think about fsu, only msu should be on our players and coaches minds.
The way those rankings came out sunday, only moving up 2 spots in the AP and not moving anywhere in the coaches poll has to be used as motivation. It doesn’t make sense how we can get dominated in an away game and drop 14 spots and out of the top 25 while thug u moves up 11 spots, then dominate a ranked team at home and only move up 2 spots. Maybe the poll smokers just don’t want to see us ranked high. I know I would be pissed if I played for Tech and I would def use this as motivation.
Scott Blair didn’t have a bad game. He had a horrendous game. It’s one thing to miss 2 chip shot field goals in a game. That would be a bad game. But to miss 2 chip shot field goals and kick 2 kickoffs out of bounds is horrendous. Both of those kickoffs completely took the crowd out of the game. Complete momentum killers. Make the opposing team earn their field position, don’t just hand it to them. Plays like that will cost us in close games. Blair needs to pull a Travis Bell and start chewing some gum or something.

This is not a Trap game. We will not be looking ahead. The success we had last week spoke volumes to the Team as a whole. The adjustments that were made really helped with the confidence and now Tech has a game plan to work on and improve. The letdown factor left for good in Miami. You will see a different Team for the rest of the season. The Team we all thought we would see coming out the gates. After watching the UNC game again, I’ve noticed a drastic improvement in the blocking schemes. The better we get the better we will be. That comes with experience. Several players were missing blocks because of poor technique or a lack of aggressiveness and know I see CPJ has found that out too and is putting people in place that are willing to put there nose in someones face. MSU is a much improved team and it will be a good game. But, quiet as it will be kept. It will be the best opponent that we could go up against at this point in the schedule to prepare us for the run we need to win the conference. I pray both teams come out of this game healthy. TECH needs two things to help them win the remainder of their there games. More aggressiveness and more game experience against the pass. They will get that Saturday. TECH will win, but they will do it because they will step up the level of their play and CPJ will keep the intensity elevated and minds sharp. GO JACKETS!!!

GT Q, I think Jeff likes to stirr the pot and watch the Tech/Ga. fans go after each other. He’s probably LHAO… As far as his prediction I think it is still to early to say. Both teams have looked inconsistent and have probably not played up to their potential. Continued improvement or not/injuries and just who wants it the most will have everything to do with who wins in Nov. It will be a war and I think it will be close and won by the team that makes the fewest mistakes. At this point that would probably be Tech but hopefully the Dawgs will jell in the next 8 weeks.

As far as Nov is concerned….GT and UGA have different teams that show up. If the GT that played vs Miami shows up in Nov, then the Dawgs roll. If the UGA that showed up vs Ari State (more so noting Cox’s int’s and the penalties, the defense looked ok), then the jackets may win

Burdell, you are a horned rimmed idiot… Is CPJ the only coach teck ever had? You’d like to run from that history of teck being a mediocre program wouldn’t you? I would to if I were a yeck fan. Hopefully your wife will find out you been playing on the computer and make you stop. You are the king of the nerds.

I was listening to Collin Cowherd this morning and really liked a bit he did on pro football teams. One had to describe a team in Six words or less. So here are a few of mine:
UGA: Excellent coach, good team, under achieving.
GT: Coach overrated, average team, Terrible kicker.
Miami: Good coach, excellent team, under achieving.
VT: Excellent coach, excellent team, ACC Champs
UF: Excellent coach, Tim Tebow, SEC Champs

LOL @ “ARE YOU THAT STUPID”
Our Coaches include legends like Heisman, Dodd, and Alexander. GT has more National Titles and conference titles than the Bullpups of Athens. Even when we were in the same conference, Georgia Tech had more conference titles than UGAg. Doesn’t seem like a history of mediocrity to me. One bad coach does not define a program.

TechDan.. Tech’s been irrelavant since 1960. Dodd quit cause he couldn’t beat Dooley. Tech has been through 7 coaches since Dodd retired not counting CPJ. Tech has won 15 times since 1960. That’s 15 wins in the last 48 years. I’d say Tech’s best tradition is losing to UGA.

One of the other AJC stories indicated that Robert Hall was having surgery on his knee in 4 weeks. Why would he wait 4 weeks if he has any chance of returning this year?

I see stupid is still here with his pathetic grammar and all. Hey stupid how long has it been since your last Nat champ? 1980. Almost 30 years. That’s what I would call IRRELEVANT. Also your record against fla since 90. Man can you say futile. You are to the gators what Vandy is to you. Now that is funny.

If GT has been irrelevant since 1960 but GT has a more recent National Championship than UGA, then what does that make UGA?

This isn’t a trap game. Lsu nearly lost to them. Plus we are favored by 6. We will win as many games against the sec than lowly ga does this year.

WHO is HIGHER? GT beating unc or Miss State having their coach lose a game against lsu? zMiss will still be a loser. If miss st can’t beat lsu when the game was in hand, then I don’t fear the other weak bullpups either. LSU walked away from that game thinking that they were really a top 10 team. HAHAHAH. Will LSU & Miss St swap their game so TECH cam play LSU this week?

UGA VII left the field in the 3rd qtr to the confines of his HOUZE. UGA VII couldn’t believe the team was that bad to let ASU still be in the game. UGA VII is wearing dippers so the LSU tigers wont leave SCRACH marks on his A$$ this week.

Gotta go dumbazzez…Can’t wait till Miss St spanks tha insect azz. Worst team in the SEC beats Tech. That will be a beautiful thing. By the way Danky, last year was the first year Tech beat Fla St. since they have been in the ACC. Tech is Fla St. and UGA’s bitch. And an ugly one at that. What year did you graduate from Carroll Tech. ROTFALMAO!!!!!

I heard CMR said willie’s D did a good job. He then told the UGA grass cutting majors to find a way to wet the field for every home game.

1 miss state is much improved from last year but if gt executes the offense properly i see tech dominating this game keeping their defense off the field. tech win not overlook anyone this season. tech wins 35-17

I think “Tech Forever” is right, inasmuch as he predicts this will be a tough, hard-fought game in Starkville. Tech has a better than 1-in-4 chance of coming out with a victory, though. Call it even. This is a “trap,” basically because Tech could be looking ahead to the old tormenter, Florida State.
What about Blair? Yank him for the rest of the game if he denies Tech three points, by missing a field goal, but especially if he flubs a kickoff by kicking out of bounds. We can’t gift MSU or anybody else with a short field.

Attention everyone: I realize MSU has been down for a long time, and I know it will take time for us to regain respect. However, I, and I believe I speak for all MSU fans when I say WE AREN’T THE WORST TEAM IN THE SEC!!!! Even in Vandy’s best season in decades, the Dawgs were able to beat them. Please don’t take a chance on hurting the Vandy fan’s (yes I know that’s singular) feelings. He has taken pride in his position at the bottom of the SEC for years. Don’t take that away from him.
