Georgia Tech, the ACC and the polls
OK, raise your hand if you think Virginia Tech is the sixth best team in the country right now.
I know, it’s not really a fair question.
Who the heck knows who should be in the top 25 this year. Even Florida now has issues should Tim Tebow have to miss the Gators’ next game in two weeks.
And is Georgia Tech, which has played one bad game, two good ones, and one average one, be ranked no higher than 25th?
But here’s the bigger issue, one the ACC just can’t seem to avoid: it once again doesn’t have a lead dog, a team that can legitimately say it’s within the ballpark of Florida, Texas or Alabama right now.
Had Miami taken care of things in Blacksburg, it potentially could have been that team. Florida State sure isn’t, and it doesn’t appear like it will be anytime soon.
Clemson lost its chance, even after its loss to Georgia Tech, by losing to TCU on Saturday.
Could it be the Hokies? It has been them for the past few years, but I can’t get over the offense, or lack of passing game, specifically. And please don’t say that Georgia Tech is the last team to talk about another team’s passing game.
But Virginia Tech’s defense and special teams are more than proven, while Georgia Tech’s this season have had ups and downs.
So, whichever team in the Coastal runs the table would seem to have the best chance at achieving lead-dog status. VT’s path is much easier than GT’s, simply because the Hokies are already sixth, while GT is 25th, with only two games against teams that are currently ranked remaining (VT and UGA). Miami could still get back in the mix, as well. I doubt they will play another game in a monsoon, as they did Saturday. A win against Oklahoma on Saturday will move them right back up to the top 10.
It’s all still a guessing game right now. But I’d love to hear your thoughts on what Georgia Tech and the ACC needs to happen to get a team in the national championship picture.

1Jacket7 it’s not rocket science to know that MSU and Vandy are historically weak when doing those schedules now is it? Just their circumstances make them a pretty safe opponent. Every now and then an exception occurs. That is the unknown factor. MSU was pretty good under Jackie Sherrill and now are playing better under Dan Mullen. But when GT scheduled MSU and Vandy no way you can say that Tech’s AD was thinking anything but cupcake. They are in the situation that GT was in when Dave Braine made the famous “expectations” statement and more recently what Drad said when hiring Paul Johnson. Wasn’t it words to the effect that Tech couldn’t compete doing what everybody else does therefore the PJ hire? MSU and Vandy in a way are Tech. Tech just wins one or two more games a year historically than MSU and Vandy.

Okay so an sec fan admits the sec has at least two cupcakes. it’s really 3 when you add ky. a team that you should have lost to last year. At least miss st has made it to the sec champ game. miss sc ky and vandy can’t say the same thing. was the tech ad thinking cupcake when we scheduled auburn and nd earlier this decade? we went 3-1 against them.
tech plays bama home and away pretty soon. also ole miss and sc. so what happens when we play and beat them. same ol excuse. they are down you scheduled them knowing they would be down. you can’t win with a ga idiot. they are irrational like someone with bi polar disorder. in fact, most of the ga posters on this blog are delusional and show signs of bi polar.

1Jacket7 it’s impossible for them to end up tied. UF is in the East, Bama in the West. If both are undefeated at the end of the regular season that will be taken care of in the SEC title game. Somebody has to lose. The winner of that game goes on to play in the NC more than likely. Now if you said Bama or UF ranked #1 over Say Texas at #2 it still gets settled onthe field. Now had you said al the big boys have 1 loss, THEN your beauty contest could definately occur. In fact did that not happen in 07?

Danky, check your math. The ACC won 6 games vs the SEC. 3 of those games were against Vanderbilt and Miss. St. 3 divided by 6 =50%. Now I know you didn’t go to Tech. You just embarrassed every teck fan on this blog. Gwinette tech maybe. Carrol Tech maybe.

You were HUMILIATED on national TV on a Thursday, so there were no other games to watch. You are lucky to be in the top 25 because Miami’s FSU win and their VT loss don’t make you look any better.

But I do get what you are getting at. Florida certainly gets some advantage because of the Meyer/Tebow love fest with the media types. Without Tebow UF is not the best team in the country. Alabama most likely is. But Bama will have to beat UF on the field most likely to get their props.

GT Q, we have won the SEC twice in the last 9 years and played in the Championship game 3 times. We have won 10 games 6 out of the last eight years, finished in the top 10, 6 out of the last 8 years, #3 in 2002, and # 2 in 2007. We have won 6 out of 8 bowl games in the last 8 years, two being BCS bowl games. We have winning records vs all SEC teams except Florida in the last 8 years and we have beaten Georgia Tech 7 out of the last 8 years. The program is dominant to Tech in every way. I know that is impossible for you to admit but your denial doesn’t change the facts. Tech getting better will only force us to get better.

I’ve already conceeded to you that under Richt’s tenure, you have experienced some success, however, facts are facts. You won the SEC in 2005 and 2002 and the last time you won it prior to that was in 1982 – so techically, you have won the SEC twice in the past 27 years. That’s not exacly stellar. You have been dominated by your division rival so much so where many UF fans and ESPN commentators pencil in a ‘W’ for UF in that game at the beginning of every season.
UGA has beated GT soundly for 7 straight years prior to 2008 and for that GT fans must pay homage….BUT we did beat you on your home field with a new offense and coaching staff. GT has won the ACC twice in the past 27 years like UGA, but somehow that little fact gets overlooked. I’m not going to get into the leather-helmet stats, but the fact remains that we have a much more recent NC that UGA.
Now where does all of that leave us?
