Statement Game

Guys, this will be a short one and I apologize in advance. I’ve seen a lot of backroads in our fair city the past two days, but I’m in a much better situation than others.
I hope ‘yall made i through the storms OK (and forgive for saying y’all).
———-
For a year, Miami had to hear about how Georgia Tech took it to the woodshed last year in front of a national television audience.
The Hurricanes players referenced that after returning the favor to the Yellow Jackets last week.
Well, this is the week for Tech to return the favor to North Carolina.
The Jackets did lose to the Tar Heels last year, even though they outgained them in yards. Turnovers, alas, didn’t help.
When asked today if he wanted to beat UNC, coach Paul Johnson said yes, without hesitation.
He then pointed out that he’s sure North Carolina and its fans want to win, as well.
Is this a game that you have had circled on the calendar?

We want to win every game. We don’t want to loose two games in a row. Based on recruiting, UNC is stocked and should be favored. It’s hard to call a game in which your the underdog a “statement game” though. I don’t care who is ranked where. Look at the recruiting for both schools the past four years and you’ll see who the underdog team is. We do play better as the underdog, so hopefully we can get back to fighting hard like one.

People like to disrespect UNC. I believe that is due in much part to jealousy. UNC is pictured as elitist, just as is UVa, and it is next to impossible to get in those schools from out-of-state. That said, UNC is developing a top-ten program, and may be there by the end of the season, if they handle business against Tech, Miami, FlState, VaTech, and NCState. Beating all 5 of those teams would be a daunting test for America’s best team. Uf UNC wins three, then win a bowl game, it would likely end the season in the top ten. This is not a pipe dream – they have exceptional talent and speed. Enter your comments here

It got circled after that embarrassment last week when CPJ’s offense got “figured out” again.

Just an aside: There is no offense that can be successful if the opposing defensive line is consistently ineffectively blocked. The pro set, spread, “I”, etc are all equally dependent on good blocking up front.

One more aside: I enjoyed the win in Athens last year also but 45-42 is a 3 point win LAST YEAR. It was also ONE in a row. That win does not difine this team. What gets done on the field from here on does.

I think GT is favored by 3, not the underdog. I could be wrong. I think Tech wins a close one but won’t be surprised if UNC dominates the line of scrimmage.

D has to play better. The new alignment might help but the UNC QB can pass and is almost as accurate as Cox. :) The undersized d line is still an issue for Tech pressuring the passer. Morgan needs a lights out game.

I think the home crowd will help and if folks remember, Tech did get yards last year, just not many points.

They need to come out with some fire under their rear hind parts. This is a statement game because of the way we got beat last week. To drop two in a row is never a good thing.

I agree with the blocking up front. It starts there but everyone has to block for this to work. I don’t know why we have so many missed assignments but against Miami people were running and missing blocks left and right…front line and A backs and receivers.

We need a good win and a good running game against a team with a good run defense. I just hope that the players want to win. Without desire or ambition it is useless to think you are going to be able to compete with some one with it.

I just want to see an all around good effort from the offense and defense. Win the line of scrimmage and win the game.

Go Jackets!

We HAVE to get this game. We have to get our balance back and get back on track, especially in our Coastal games. I just worry about the condition of Grant Field after all the rain…will footing be good enough for the kind of cuts required for the option?

I liked CPJ’s comments regarding his offense and how there is nothing wrong with it and the last 2 games prove it – he said look at what Clemson did to BC, holding them to 54 yards total offense and 4 first downs, while Tech had 408 yards in total offense against Clemson, so Tech must be doing something right.

Well, as most of us know, statistics are for losers and can be manipulated to say whatever it is you need to say. Such as, “we had 408 yards so we must be doing OK” – well, yes and no – IF you take away the 2nd play of the game (87 yard TD run), the 40 yard “trick play” on the fake field goal) and the 39 yard pass to BayBay to set up the winning field goal, that leaves only 242 yards of total offense – not exactly numbers related to a stellar offensive attack – but, alas, you cannot take those three plays away so CPJ is absolutely right. RIIGGHHTT!

I think it is a VERY bad sign when you have to change your defensive scheme after 3 games. Wasn’t the 4-2-5 the defense the Jackets worked on in spring practice, and then for about a month before Jax State? I am trying to be optimistic, but right now we on both sides of the ball. Considering the high expectations we had coming into this season, I fear a bad loss on Saturday could put this season into a spin. Somebody on the team has to step up a la Tashard Choice and be a leader, or this could get ugly…that being said…I’ll be in the West stands on Saturday cheering my lungs out!

I think we are in for a great game on Saturday. The Heels defense is the best they’ve had in over a decade. While Tech may have outgained them last year it was mostly between the 20 yard lines. This is a statement game for both programs. The Heels have a great chance to head into Blacksburg 6-0 if they can get by the Jackets. Looking forward to gametime!

Georgia Tech made a statement against Miami. They said, “We are not ready for prime time or any kind of championship”. The defense and the offense both sucked on national TV. That was a big step backward for the program. A season of great anticipation has once again become gloom and doom with the potential of total disaster. I hope they will man up against UNC and get back on the right track. But, the bottom line is only the players can decide to be winners or looser. Those of us who have been Tech fans through thick and thin (and there has been more thin than thick) will still stick with them. THWG!!!!

do you realize that you just made the dumbest post in history. We had 408 yards but if you take away all our yards we would have had zero? And we scored 30 points but if you take away all our points we would have scored zero? And we won the game but if you take everything away we would have lost?

Congrats on the dumbest post ever.

And m – no, you continually maintain the title as the dumbest post ever when you continually bring up “thank god and greyhound” and the ACC won more games vs the SEC” etc, as you continually leave out the results of the bowl games from LAST year. I have wanted another crack at unc real bad since our last game. I continually replay in my head the passing td late in the 4th quarter to nicks when the game was pretty much over. I believe it was a 4th and 1 inside our 35 when they were just running the ball down our throats. The way their oline was playing, they easily could have ran for a first and just chewed clock. That really pissed me off and I am sure it pissed PJ off more. Hopefully we are using that as motivation. Last weeks game however should be motivation enough. I’ll be flying in to ATL from NY just to see butch davis get a little taste of his own medicine. At least I hope so. As PJ says good teams don’t lose 2 in a row. Should tell us a lot about our team and this season.

IF you take away every offensive play we’d have 0 yards.

IF you take away all of our rushing attempts, then we are a passing attack in need of a run game.

What a bunch of goons. The whole “we are the U” crap is so stupid. The “U” is pretty much a 6-7 win team these days. The glory days are gone. I don’t believe Warren Sapp or Ray Lewis are suiting up Saturday are they?

You have a young dumb quarterback that decides it’s a good idea to publicly say “nobody can stop our offense”. Are you kidding me? Can you get any dumber than that? The “U” lost the last three games of last year….all of them. Since then you’ve beat a marginal Florida State team. All the sudden nobody can stop your offense? Dumb, dumb, dumb thing to say publicly.

And then you’re head coach….what a moron. This goofball decides to publicly say “I’ve let the guys know not to take Georgia Tech lightly”. What?????!!!!! Why in the world would Miami of all teams be taking Georgia Tech lightly? Does your coach really need to say that? You’ve lost the last four straight..and last year was a beating. It’s hilarious…and I hope ya’ll are taking Georgia Tech “lightly”.

Posted by: Optionoffense | September 16, 2009 at 10:16 PM

So Turds Suck-

According to the majority of Miami fans…”we know how to handle the option now”. So you’re telling me that wonderful coach of yours had no idea last year? Or could it have been that in fact the coaching staff did know how to stop the option…but you’re players aren’t good enough? It should be the second choice. If your coaching staff didn’t know last year how to defend an option offense they shouldn’t be coaching college football. You’re players aren’t good enough. This crap about “now we have some younger, better guys coming in”….what a joke.

Posted by: Optionoffense | September 16, 2009 at 10:42 PM

You “U” fans…are the most obnoxious, delusional, moronic fans I’ve ever encountered. And I’ve dealt with plenty of University of Georgia fans over the years.

I’m pretty sure after ya’ll lose tomorrow night that 85% of you will go into hiding. The other 15% will be talking about how bad the talent level at the “U” is…how Randy Shannon is a terrible coach (he is actually terrible).

You idiots NEVER say anything of value as to why you feel you can win this game…it’s the typical “we are better”, “we know how to stop this offense”, “you can’t stop Jacory”…..crap an eight year old could come up with.

Posted by: Optionoffense | September 16, 2009 at 11:04 PM

LOL….yes, I noticed you have two new coordinators…and both have such strong resumes. Whipple was let go by Pittsburgh after the 2006 season…was out of football for ‘07…then spent one year at Philly as an offensive “assistant”…not coordinator. Well, butter my biscuit, he’s qualified than for the UM job.

Your wonderful defensive coordinator you talk about that shut down Tech last year at UNC was the SPECIAL TEAMS COACH….he then “helped” on defense. He was not involved in defensive game planning, he was given the more important job of making sure PAT’s were crisp and guys were staying in thier lanes on kickoffs. Again, qualified enough for UM.

So bases on those factors alone..why heII yes I can see why you suddenly think things are going to be different.

Sorry but if you think the only difference in a 4-2-5 and 4-3-4 defense is changing the name of one player, that has to qualify as one of the dumber posts around. If thats all you know about football then maybe you should just stick to watching highlights on ESPN.

This is a statement game especially for Coach PCJ. He has set some very high expectations when he said that this year’s team vs last year’s is like night and day. Hearing that, people were expecting a unbeaten season, a coastal title and a BCS bowl game.So after a 2 so-so and a 3rd game in which we were totally embarrassed, this has to be a Statement game (for PCJ and Wommack). The team was poorly prepared for the Miami game and showed an incapacity to make any adjustment during the game. Yes, this is a statement game for PCJ and Wommack!!!

…you do not understand football if you think there is any difference in a 4/2/5 vs a 4/3/4 – you bring in a “real” linebacker and remove the “WOLF”, which is what I said, and voila’, you are now a 4-3, with COOP now at strong safety instead of a “hybrid” linebacker.

Does not make a hill of beans what offense or defense you are running.
If the other team blocks & tackles better than you, you lose the game.

If the other team has better players than you, you lose.

No, George P…

“…you are now a 4-3, with COOP now at strong safety instead of a “hybrid” linebacker.”

You need to go back & look at the tapes of the games. You will find that “COOP” has spent most of his game time at safety. Reese, #26, has gotten most of the play at “WOLF”.

Tech ran this a lot last year. It is nothing new. What’s new is having a name for it. Go back & look at last years tapes.

And it is not a new defense. Tech ran it when Pepper Rodgers was coach.
In fact, Pepper went out & recruited a 180 lb high school LB with 4.4 speed to play the position. He played it for 4 years. UCLA ran it under Tommy Prothro, which is where Pepper probably learned it.

And why are you guys not complaining about Burnett being a ROVER instead of a safety? Don’t we need two safeties? Everybody else has two.

I admit I don’t understand the real differences in defensive responsibilities between a 4-2-5 Wolf and a standard 4-3-4.

What I do understand is that apparently there’s something about the 4-2-5 Wolf that these guys don’t get or can’t handle, and there’s something about the 4-3-4 that they can handle.

I suspect most of the players were raised in a 4-3-4 defense, so maybe that’s it.
