For those who have worried Jonathan Dwyer.
I wouldn’t worry too much. Coach Paul Johnson isn’t.
Dwyer, 2009: 168 yards, 5.6 yards a carry, 2 touchdowns
Dwyer, 2008: 250 yards, 6.4 yards a carry, 3 touchdowns
Now, also keep in mind that Dwyer has actually only played the equivalent of 2 games this season. He sat out just about all of the second half of the JSU game, and missed all of the second half of the Miami game.
Johnson said after Wednesday’s practice that the thing about Dwyer is his yards will come in bunches. Dwyer said earlier this week that he wasn’t worried, either.
So, there you go.
—————-
I asked Paul Johnson if there was a difference in a player’s mindset between starting a game, or coming off the bench.
He said he didn’t think so. 30 snaps are 30 snaps.
Two players, Sedric Griffin and Julian Burnett, said they thought there was a small difference.
That difference being after you’ve earned a starting job you want to keep it by doing the right things, the smart things, etc. When you are coming off the bench you try to go full-bore to get the coaches’ attentions. I interpreted that to mean that perhaps you play a bit more recklessley as you come off the bench and try to earn a starting position, than you do as a starter. But, I’d love to hear y’all’s thoughts on that.

North Carolina will win Saturday and Tech will be an average 2-2 and back to reality. Paul Johnson’s gold chain will snap off his neck when he blows up for the 10th time. He then will ask every player how stupid they are. Josh Nesbitt will read a Dr. Seuss book at half time to prove he can. Tech gear will be 50% off next week and razorblade sells will go up from Tech fans scraping their new GT decals off their back windshield. Tech’s offense is old news. We then move on to the rest of the season that really matters. I bet there will be at least 37,000 at Historic Bobby Grant stadium at Paul O’leary field.

Hey “Macrotech”, yeah that’s all Richt does…he wins games, around 10 games every year in case anyone’s counting. 7 to 1 over Wreck last time I looked. As for the so-called national championship…no such thing. There’s no real NC and never will be until there’s a playoff. MR has won the only REAL championship twice, the SEC championship. Win that, and your the best team in college football.
As for CPJ, he’d a been a decent coach 25 years ago, but face it man…it’s over. You didn’t really think this triple option thing was going to last did ya? He caught everybody off guard last season, but even in the ACC, the teams have players that are too athletic, fast and strong. They were going to figure this thing out eventually, everybody knew that. LSU had a month to figure it out last season, and they did. Clemson figured it out in the second half of that game. Miami had you figured out long before the game started. NC and VT’s D coordinators have already watched the video of that game about a thousand times, and your going to get spanked by both of those teams. Then the Yech fans will be calling for CPJ’s head and he’ll end up where ever Chan Gailey is at. Oh and BTW….while all of that is going on….MR will still be winning games.

At the Miami game, there was NO pressure on their passer and receivers were running free all night. Unless Richard Simmons or the equally girly throwing, B. H. Obama, is playing quarterback for the opposition, it will be bad.
Nesbit ran for his life every time he tried to pass. Our O line and our D line were whipped. The defensive coaching has to get better and the defensive staff has to bring some stunts to pressure the quarterback as well as stuff the run. Unless PJ is getting complacent, he will figure out how to score with his system, but he has to put the boot to the butts of the defensive staff as well as improving special teams performance.

Start out by stating i’m a UGA fan. . . but i pretty much read all the blogs because it’s football. . . don’t like it, don’t care.
But the ones saying Paul Johnson’s offense is a gimmick and doesn’t work are a little bit foolish. The offense works. . . and what’s better, it gives teams with lower athletic ability the chance to compete with more athletic teams. . . if you don’t believe that, just look at what Navy nearly did to Ohio State this year. There is no excuse in the world for Navy to stay on the field with Ohio State except for execution and game planning.
As for it being a high school offense. . . well, not true because of one fundamental difference. You can’t block below the waist (cut) outside the tackle box in high school. If you could, it would probably be about the only offense run in high school because it would be damn near impossible to stop.
I will agree that the more you see the offense, the better you get at defending it. And LSU having a good month to prepare gave them a huge advantage over the average team that only has a week . . . which is really about 2 days of actual practice.
I hate tech as much as any dawg fan, but Paul Johnson seems to be a pretty good guy and he knows what he’s doing. I’ll give credit where credit is due. I think tech’s lack of passing game (and i sometimes think they limit their QB in this aspect too) will continue to be a problem throughout the year though. I saw a lot of people on the QB after the Miami game, but when you’re behind in a running offense and throwing on 3rd and long, you’re screwed. period.

“GT Que”……Same old story from you Tech fans, we might lose a game somewhere around the beginning of the season, and then you all start yelling that we’re looking at a 4 or 5 loss season. Meanwhile, Tech wins a couple of games and you start yelling that Tech is going to have a 10 or 11 win season. But when it’s all said and done, when the season is over…..UGA has won 10 games and Tech has lost 4 or 5….tommorrow the grass will be green, the sky will be blue, and Tech will have a mediocre program….some things will never change.

DawgGoneTruth, I agree with you on the ‘real’ National Championship statement…with regards to playoffs. However, under the system that has existed since the beginning of time…Tech has done what it takes to be labeled National Championship double the amount of times than uga. Tech is, fully aware of SEC championships…we have 5 of them. You guys keep on being content with those 10 win seasons…I know you’re not; I enjoy slumming on the mutt blogs and your fanbase turns on it’s coaches faster than any I’ve ever seen. As for the offensive scheme that Tech runs…we’re going to play badly and lose games. BUT! We’re going to win more than we lose and until your pups stop it, you’ve got nothing. November will be a telling tale….we’ll all just have to wait and see…. I, for one, am a fan of it and look forward to when it’s run to it’s potential! GO TECH!!!

Maybe if some of you could break the suction of your lips on PJ’s butt, you could spend a few seconds asking yourself this? Other than beating UGA 1 time, what has PJ done in his career that Chan Gailey hasn’t? And have you ever wondered why a coach that has been annointed with the mantle of greatness could only beat 4 teams with winning records in 6 years at Navy. FOUR in SIX years folks. And now this year….2009….his “great” offense is stuck in reverse going nowhere fast. And defense. Forget it. Paul Johnson teams have never played defense. How could a team coming off such a huge win at UGA take such a monumental azz whipping like that 5 loss SEC team gave them in the Chick Fil A Bowl? How guys? Poor coaching maybe? Rationalize it. Tech hasn’t played a complete game since UGA in 08. And the “execution” excuse? PUHLEEZE! I guess you think opposing Defensive Coordinators are just going to let Tech “execute”. Opposing defenses are why Tech can’t execute on offense this year. What lunatic thinks giving up 30 lbs a man on both lines equates to winning at this level, I might add. What is the excuse if UNC lays another butt whipping on GT and the offense lays another egg? Take the blinders off. PJ just might not be so “great” up here with the big boys.

The only thing for certain is that neither GT or UGA have a defense so it will be another high scoring game. GT did look out of shape in the Miami game, but maybe Miami will make a lot of teams look bad this year. If teams playing GT play assignment football then the run can be stopped and force GT to be successful passing the ball. Something to date GT has been unable to do. Lots of football left to see which teams are really good.

GWB – Sorry I mistook you for one of those UGA fans that just jumps on here trolling for a fight with nothing substantive to say. Still doesn’t change the fact you didn’t have anything useful or contributory to add to the discussion. Just the typical – “you are going to lose” comments that remind me of my 11 yr old.
The offense is not a gimmick by any stretch when executed properly. There are still going to be number advantages for the offense when it is executed correctly and it becomes that much more dangerous if you can add an effective passing component. We are missing the execution ability right now. If we are unable to effectively execute this offense, we will lose. If you really want to see the offense executed, watch a couple of Navy games. The flow and quickness is actually much better than GT. Put GT’s athletes on the field in place of Navy’s and get them to the point that Navy is with execution and the offense/results would be amazing.
As for the defense, we all knew losing those players on the D-line wasn’t going to help, but the current d-line is virtually nonexistent through these last two games. I also would like to hear what happened to the secondary that returns all starters but looks like swiss cheese. If UNC finds an offense, it could be another tough game.
What makes college football so much fun to watch is the unpredictability from week to week. I would still take PJ over Gailey any day of the week though.

Scheme or Execution of Scheme:
As several bloggers have pointed out, in the triple-option defensive ends are routinely left unblocked intentionally so they can be optioned off by QB’s decision to run or pitch. But Clemson and Miami, sent their often unblocked DE’s deep into backfield immediately. They were not concerned with the QB they just were taking the pitch out of the equasion (thus taking Dwyer out of the equasion). Since tech’s QB is not a dangerous passer they bring up a DB or insert an additional LB to fill the hole in the middle and stop the run. They are forcing the play between the tackles where they have placed more defenders. It works whether its the fullback dive or Dwyer coming up the middle. Until Tech can hurt the defense by passing on depleted secondary, the number of big plays will be small. This will cut Dwyers carries by 10 or more each game and he won’t have as many opportunities to have long carries down the sideline. I think Dwyer is a good back but running will be tough under these circumstances. Ironically, its a total juxtaposition, the defense is dictating what the QB does. So the option has become the defense’s not the offenses.

Anybody that would say that GT’s schedule in 1990 was weak is either too stupid to pay any attention too (this is my guess) or too young to know anything about football in 1990.
Just some facts about about the 1990 football season for the intellectually challenged.
The ACC placed 5 teams in bowl games that year (only the Big10 placed more at 6); doesn’t sound like much until you realize there were only 19 bowl games that season. BTW, the mighty SEC had 4 bowl teams. This was before the idiotic conference tie-ins took over the bowl selection process and teams had to earn their bowl appearence with an actual good season (in fact, 7 independent teams earned bowl bids that year).
The ACC had the best bowl record of any conference that season at 3-1-1 (the SEC was 2-2 and the Big10 2-4). BTW, GT won the ACC that year with a 6-0-1 record. GT won every computer poll that existed at the time for the simple fact that they did have a tough schedule.
Ironically, besides Div1-AA UTC, UGA might have been the worst team GT played that year (maybe Wake Forest was as weak as UGA).

It does not matter if an unblocked D-end crashes toward the QB because that IS the QB’s pitch key. All a crashing D-end does is make the QB to pitch to the A back which he would have done anyway even if the D-end waited for the QB to get down the line before committing. If the play side A-back and WR get a block, which they didn’t do very well during the Miami game, then the play will get on the edge for a nice gain. Check out the following link for a nice breakdown of the triple:
