So, will it be 5-for-5 against the Canes?

I was doing a radio show for a station in Central Florida Wednesday afternoon and the host asked me why I thought Georgia Tech has beaten Miami four consecutive times.
I really had no idea (I know, that’s not uncommon).
Last year’s reason was obvious: Miami had no idea how to stop the option. No idea. But, as has been reported this week, the Canes have made some fundamental differences with how they will line up (closer to the line), and how they’ll attack the line.
But, as for the other four wins, I wasn’t around for those. But you were. If you have a theory, post it below.
———-
Here are the injury reports for tonight’s game:

Tech

Out: Jaybo Shaw, So., QB (broken collarbone)
Kyle Jackson, r-So., LB (foot)

Doubtful: Tyler Melton, So., WR (knee)

Questionable: Preston Lyons, r-Jr., BB (shoulder)
Richard Watson, r-Fr., BB (hamstring)

Miami

Probable: DE Eric Moncur (lower extremity)

Questionable: WR Aldarius Johnson (lower extremity)

Doubtful: OL Ben Jones (illness)
RB Damien Berry (illness)

Out: DE Adewale Ojomo (jaw)
OL Cory White (lower extremity)
LB Levi Paalua (upper extremity)
DB DeMarcus Van Dyke (head)
DB JoJo Nicolas (illness)

I’m not sure what the difference is between an upper extremity and a head. But there you go.
———
Lastly, the radio host asked if I thought Tech would make it 5-for-5. I said I didn’t see why not. Running for 400-plus yards on someone isn’t an accident. I’ll be surprised if Tech doesn’t play its most complete game of the year.

Those are tough questions, especially since we had Gailey coaching. I would have to say that Tenuta’s defense always seemed to give the Miami QB’s a lot of problems over that timeframe.

Anyway, I believe if we protect the ball, execute our blocks on the outside, and are sound on special teams, we win the game by 2 TD’s tomorrow night. But it would also be nice to have a great start like we have had in the last 2 games. Hopefully, that will happen followed by more consistency on the offensive and defensive sides of the ball!

That’s easy. Tech won because Patrick Nix was coaching Miami’s offense. The same guy that “developed” Reggie Ball and taught him how to count to 4.

Tech won in ‘05 because Durant Brooks was a beast (yes the punter).
Tech won in ‘06 because CJ was a beast.
Tech won in ‘07 because Tashard Choice was a beast.
Tech won in ‘08 because JD was a beast.

Who steps up in ‘09? My money is on Josh Nesbitt. If the defense does focus on stopping Dwyer, which they’ve made pretty clear is their goal, it will be up to Nesbitt to make the right reads and execute the option. He needs to keep it more early in the game, taking what he can get (3 or 4 yards typically). Maybe fake a pitch once in a while? The more he can confuse the defense, the more they’ll have to open it up. That’s when Dwyer can start pounding inside.

Keep the pass plays to 2nd or 3rd and short. If Nesbitt can run in the 2nd and 3rd quarters the way he did in the 4th last week, Tech will be more successful. It should be a good game all the way.

Oh, and from what I heard, Jerrard Terrant has already activated beast mode.

I flew to Miami four years ago when the game was rescheduled in November the week before Georgia in lieu of a pending Hurricane that ended up fizzling out days before the Saturday evening contest in the drizzling rain. The Canes were vying for a BCS chance with a win and one of their players in the Miami newspaper was quoted as saying “we do not even know what conference this is much less who Ga Tech is” In the 2nd half of that game, Miami was scoreless as Tenuta’s defense held each and every time on 3rd down. It was the beginning of the end for Coker..Then two years ago, Tashard Choice broke loose in the 2nd half to put Jackets on top.. interesting side bar..ran into Chan’s wife in ladies room at Orange Bowl after that game two years ago. Happy for great win on road but couldn’t resist bringing up the loss to VA at home the week before when GT missed FG opportunity after getting sacked for a loss on 3rd down as Chan and OC elected to not give ball to Tashard..Mrs. Gailey couldnt get out of the Orange Bowl ladies room fast enough.
Orange Bowl what a dump it was good riddance

Just wondering after losing 4 straight years to the Jackets and still zero ACC Coastal division titles, do you(Miami) know what conference this is now?

While the U has struggled to rebuild the former canes have done well for themselves in the big show. Times have changed though. Current Tech players, and most everyone else under 35, grew up with Miami being a dominant program.

For alot of folks they *are* college football, with the titles and the NFL players to show for it.

Beating them, regardless of the state of their program, means something to Tech players- hence, they’ve done it consistently.

Miami is the antithesis of Tech, with academic standards, violations, team-first versus playmaker mentality. When Tech beats Miami, some sort of justice is being done in the world. In my opinion, we can’t do it enough.

I’ve loved watching you Cane fans lose. And on Thursday, I’ll do it again.

Reasons why Miami wins this game
1. Tech forgets their protractors so they cant call plays
2. Tech gets robbed of their pads on crime-filled campus
3. Nesbitt has to throw the ball and it looks like he threw it left handed and it got shot out of the air, Worst arm in D1
4. Tech is busy filming national monuments for Al Qaeda(Again)
5. Peachtree Middle School asks for their playbook back
6. Miami has top ten recruiting classes every year while Tech gets UGA’s scraps and ecstacy dealers
7. Miami has Mark Whipple, an old PJ nemesis, while tech has a coin they flip to see if they should run right or left
8. Tech’s lineman give up on the season and declare for the nfl, Again

Ten reasons UGAg loses to Arkansas:

10 – 50% of the Arkansas can’t read, but 65% of UGAg’s can’t either.
9 – The UGAy bus driver forgot about the time change and showed up late to the stadium.
8 – 12 starters for UGAy turned in their scholarships, they claimed they weren’t getting the 5th grade education they had hoped for.
7 – Cox shows up for the game an emotional basket case after begging for everyone to “just love me for who I am”….
6 – Players are too shocked to play after Mark Richt admits to gay love affair with an Tony Barnhart.
5 – UGA gets caught looking ahead – they play “Open Date” in a couple of weeks and are nervous they could lose….
4 – The Bulldog nation is still too hung-over from winning their 30th consecutive Pre Season National Championship last year.
3 – Georgia players kept bending over backwards after hearing the Razorback pig call.
2 – It’s discovered that Cox is playing illegally as a transgender after he complained that his “vagina hurts”…

And the number reason why Georgie will lose this game and many others is because…

1 – They just suck.

I think it will be a close game won by 3 points, will depend on the lines, and turnovers. If the d line can stay on top of JH and if the o line can handle Miami’s d line, then Jackets win easy. If either fails, it could be a nail biter. If both fail, it will be a long night. Miami is really motivated and that concerns me.

Georgia Tech’s intelligent athletes who play assignment football match up well with the undisciplined Miami players. Miami players have tended to quit the past few years when we played them, if things don’t go well early they lose interest and start packing it in. If we stay focus and take care of our business we’ll win again tonight. Talk Tech football at: http://www.bbuzz.off.com

Am I the only one concerned about tonight? What worries me most is the pass rush. Last week against Clemson, the Jackets couldn’t exert a whole lot of pressure on Parker in the 2nd half, especially when he rolled out of the pocket. No knock on Parker, but Jacory Harris is much more mobile so that could be a real problem.
Let’s not forget that Miami is loaded with athletes. Are they undisciplined? They were last year in their assignment responsibilty but that doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll repeat that tonight (but we can hope so).
This isn’t at all to say that tonight’s a lost cause because the Canes front wall, while athletic and speedy, isn’t tremendously large; maybe they’ll use their great speed to run themselves out of position very quickly.
Turnovers tell the tale I think but either way I see a pretty close game.

Did You Know….GT has never lost a game under Paul Johnson when the ball was not fumbled during a game.

This is the key right here guys. If GT holds on to the ball, GT will be in good shape and I see no reason they should lose this game.

Now, if they do turn it over they will have some work to do.

But, I still think GT should have stayed at home because according to UM players their “offense can score at will” and “it cannot be stopped”. Why should we even try?

If they really think GT isn’t coming to play ball, they are out of their minds.

You guys need to find a way to get Dwyer to the edge.

Not sure how many times he got it in space against Clemmons, but I know one time he was a step away from breaking a long run, most likely for a TD.

It seems way too easy for the DTs to focus on him up the middle and either stuff him or force Nesbitt to keep, which takes him completely out of the play.

You can’t have a Heisman candidate completely taken out of plays.

Also, didn’t Dwyer have success catching the ball last year? I don’t think he has been thrown to yet, but I would think that’s another easy way to get him in space.

Anyway, seems The U is back to running thier collective mouth again, so I believe if you get up early, they aren’t going to understand what is going on and why they are not dominating Tech….you guys win.

TechTony,

Yes, I’m worried about this game for one reason: Mark Whipple. Shannon couldn’t coach his way out of a paper bag but I must give him props for getting a top notch coordinator. Whipple won a national championship against Paul Johnson at UMass and has coached the Steelers and Eagles recently. He developed Ben Roethlisberger as well. I think it was clear in the first game that Miami’s offense is years ahead of where they were last year. This guy is the real deal.

The only consolation is that their new defensive coordinator has had trouble against option teams in the past.

I’m obviously not a Buck Belue fan but I’ll offer some respect to someone who has played the game.

His well-contructed comments this morning on 680 are contructive.

He said:

1. FSU is in BIIIIIIIIGG trouble.
FSU isnt “back,” and both the JaxSt and Miami games prove it. FSU’s Pass D was putrid and made Jacory Harris look like Joe Montana. FSU’s run D was medicore and Miami STILL couldnt run the ball.

My comments: I agree.
GT beats Miami tonight. Then, you can take it to the bank that
BYU is gonna DESTROY FSU on Saturday.

2. Belue also said Clemson has better DEs than Miami, and that Miami probably has better DTs. However, Clemson has the overall better defense. I agree on that point as well.

A few extra toughts on my own:

1. Can GT’s Pass Offense be ANY worse than it was vs. Clemson ??

No. I think Nesbitt’s last INT was the KEY MOMENT for him. Watching the replay of the game, he was furious at himself after that pick. So, what happened next? He played LIGHTS OUT the rest of the way, with great run plays, and his next 2 passes were RIGHT ON THE MONEY, including the pass to Thomas down to CU 30 yd line that broke the game open for GT. I think Nesbitt has turned the corner, and will play LIGHTS OUT vs Miami.

2. Can GT run the ball vs. Miami?

Clemson has a MUCH better D than Miami. Belue thinks so. I concur.
For the 3rd game in a row, GT will rush for 300+ yds.

For all practical purposes, HC Shannon REALLY runs the Miami D, the sawm way CPJ REALLY runs the GT-O. And Shannon is WAAAAYY over-matched by CPJ. CPJ has been running/scheming with this Offensive style for 20+ years. He’s seen EVERYTHING and knows how to adjust.
Shannon has defended it…ONCE. ITS A TOTAL MISMATCH.

2. Is GT more “battle-tested” than Miami?

CLEARLY, YES. Miami’s win over FSU looks more & more over-rated with every passing day. I think Clemson is WAAAAAY better than Miami at almost every position, especially the D-Line and its gonna show tonight.

3. GT Pass D is WAAAAAYY better than FSU Pass D, and will severely limit Miami’s Pass Offense.

GT has the best secondary in the ACC. The 2 big CU TD passes accounted for 140 yds of their 261 total pass yds. Despite that, GT STILL had 2 INTs, and 2 other near-INTs where the passses hit the GT defender in the hands but he couldnt hang on. That could have been 4 INTs in one game. CU QB Parker is very good. He threw several “lasers” on rollouts. But, thats the point. He was being chased out of the pocket A LOT b/c of GT Pass Rush. Harris looks like a statue, bt I do expect him to pull some QB Draw Plays. GT run D held Spiller to 87 yds rushing. Miami had 90 yds rushing against a “suspect” FSU rush D.

Lastly, GT takes this game away in the second qtr. By end of 3rd qtr, I expect to see A LOT of “extracurricular” activities and persoal foul penalties. Miami has a WELL DEFINED history on this part.

And, if you dont buy into ANY of the above, then just the fact that ESPN is hyping this game and Miami…SO HARD…you can have confidence GT should win handily.

Good points TSJ. I see the same thing. I think Josh will have a great game and his passes will be much better. Start off with some short ones and get his confidence up. FSU is badly coached and miami barely beat them. They will face a real defense and real team tonight. Gt wins 31-21

Melinda

When the schedule came out, I thought that this could be our toughest game of the early season. Teams that face us early will see more defensive success. They have not had weeks and weeks to forget their off-season training in defending the option and playing assignment ball. They will be more mentally sound and THAT is the most important key to defending our offense. Mental toughness and focus. If Harris gets settled in and starts slinging it accurately, we will be in for a long night. Miami is a much better team than they were last year.

Tech must play sound football tonight. They need to get back to what they were doing all last season. I particularly like the fake dive to dwyer with him running with nesbitt for the pitch. The 1st offensive play of the second half in the UGA game last year is an example. I think they could have great success with that play. just need to get dwyer some space to move. Nesbitt has to make some short pass completions. loosen up the defense so we can run our offense effectively. Go jackets!!

You are absolutely right about getting Dwyer to the edge. Whether that means more BBack options, screen passes or getting him the ball in the flat, he needs more touches out on the perimeter. Dwyer is a big play threat everytime he touches the ball. Maybe he lines up a few times at ABack so we can get him outside in space. Last year against miami we saw the dive up the middle go for big yards almost every time we ran it. I believe miami, like clemson, will try and clog the middle as often as possible to keep the dive play from going for big yards. CPJ will find ways to get Dwyer in space. He is due for a big game.

Nesbitt is the key though. We can only go as far as he takes us. I like that we were throwing the deep ball, but let Nesbitt complete some short and intermidiate passes to build confidence before we start throwing bombs down field. I have faith in Josh. The kid is a winner. Hes tough and he makes big plays when it matters most. Hopefully that continues tonight.

Anyway, looks like a pretty good match up tonight. I think GT will win. I’m not convinced that Miami has the D to keep up yet. Their QB is good. If they win, it’s because your D let him get in a groove and he’ll kill ya. You better look out for the future, I think his is bright. But Tech wins this one….34-21

I think we take down Ark. We get our best DE back and Cox is gaining confidence….37-24

FSU will lose to BYU….not good for the ACC. Worse than that is that the Jokies will lose to Nebraska in a shootout. With Miami, FSU and VT all losing, should clear the way for the Jackets to be in the ACC drivers seat. “GT4ever”…..Maybe I should have elaborated. The kid is obviously a heckuva athlete, (better than Clemson’s QB IMO) but he’s still pretty young. I think if your D can swarm him early with Morgan (who is a beast BTW) and your DL getting pressure, it will rattle him and keep him from settling into a rythme (did I spell that right?) Anyway, I think your boys can. But if you let him come down the field a couple of times early, he will build momentum quick. He’ll start smelling 300+ yards and 3 or 4 TDs. Surely you’ve seen that happen with these young guns?

Funny how UM fans talk about how we let Parker throw at will against us. That he’s just a Frosh and we let a Frosh do that to us. Well, Harris is just a Soph with very little experience and now he’s the second coming of Kosar. After only one game. Granted Harris is a good QB but when any QB has all day to throw like he did against FSU then of course he’s going to put up big numbers. I guess your mind tells you what you want to hear, huh? Parker is going to be a stud and even UM fans have to admit that.
Trade School Junkie…Your right, JN was pissed off with himself after that near INT and he did play much better the rest of the way. He carried GT when we needed him the most and that is a sign of a great QB and leader.
Granted UM has players but if they think their going to light us up then they crazy. GT is not FSU. Their delusional if they’ve bought into all the hype. One win does not overshadow the last 5 years of bad football.
One last thing. CPJ will not let this game get away from GT. Sure UM will come out all hyped up but that only last a little while. GT will stay with their game plan and make adjustments accordingly. We may not score big at first but we will wear them down and then boom, the big play.

GT beats Miami (which makes Miami & FSU “LOOK” over-rated)

Nebraska beats VT (which makes VT look over-rated)

BYU crushes FSU (which “CONFIRMS” that both Miami & FSU ARE over-rated)

Looks like the ACC’s rep this weekend could come down to:

1. Wake vs. Gardner-Webb, or
2. NCSt vs. Elon

I hope there’s some Saint or guardian angel out there for the ACC.

Darindawg you’re right. It’s all about confidence with these young guys. If we let him gain that then we might be in trouble. If we can put pressure on him then there goes the confidence. CPJ as well as any other coach believes stop the run and you’ve got a great chance. We have to make Harris beat us with his arm. See how this kid can handle the pressure. He’s a soph with little experience so I think he can get rattled. Once rattled he’ll more than likely try to do too much and that may spell disaster for them. Fingers crossed. I said it before, if Tech holds onto the ball and Josh sticks with short, accurate passes out in the flat to Dywer or Allen, Tech wins. I think Harris gets hit early by Morgan and gets rattled. Just remember, who does UM have behind Harris? A true freshman(or redshirt?), Alonzo Highsmith’s kid. Imagine the pressure on him coming into an nationally televised game against our defense…

The first thing I would suggest for Tech fans is to stop depending on sports articles to determine how well we will play a game or whether or not we will win. Go to the games, watch the games and really pay attention to the talent we have and execution of our players. This will help when stating things like the U has better athletes. Tech has great athletes and it shows every week. We can play with anybody. As JD has said in the past we are our own worst enemy. We we execute and play up to our potential we do very well and win games. So, tonight we face Miami and we will do it with CPJ at the helm. It is Thursday night and we have a goal of winning the ACC with players that just missed that opportunity last year. So, our offense will be better tonight because we learn from our mistakes, it doesn’t matter what defense we go up against it only matters how well we read it and attack it. We win because we make the right decisions tonight and you can say all you want about talent and 5stars. That crap goes out the window when the whistle blows and toe meets leather. Look for our defense to step up tonight. Look for Josh making better throws, Look for the DB’s to have 3 INTs tonight. Look for Morgan to have 2 sacks and 10 tackles and look for our LB’s to reck havoc all over the field. We will score 40pts tonights. Jackets win. 5 in a row.

WhiteandGold, if we play like we did last week, yes we have a defense problem. But our defense made poor decisions on those big plays because they knew it was coming and they misplayed it. Take away the big plays and our defense played well. You learn from your mistakes and if we do we will have a great defensive night because we have the players to make it happen. If we don’t it will be a long night. I chose to believe we will step it up. And in just the 3rd game of the year we gel and become a more cohesive unit.

whenever you have Derrick Morgan with 2 sacks and your secondary with 2 int’s all in the same game, then it shows we just made some bad decisions and had a bad TOTAL defensive game. Our defense will not make the same mistakes again tonight

TSJ-
Thanks for the good points, I was starting to fall into some of the hype over UM and be worried about the game.

While certain aspects of UM look good, I gotta believe CPJ will find a way to win this one.

And I hope the ACC officials aren’t coming into this biased toward getting UM back on top for the good of the conference. We need to win it solidly to take the officials out of the decision.

Tech won in all those game because of better execution. Gailey had players and Nix just got the lead while Tenuda kept it for him. CPJ just confused the U’s D and we have better running backs. This year we have more speed on the outside and more people to throw to. The WR and backs have to just catch the ball. Diesel and Allen will make their plays, but Nesbitt needs to make the throws and the recievers have to make the catches.

So funny to see Miami fans on here talking about Tech players getting in trouble and Atlanta being so dangerous. Miami is known as Thug U for a reason – players shooting people, getting shot, acting like complete classless idiots (see Peach Bowl). And last I checked, Miami is a lot more crime ridden that Atlanta. Maybe that’s why you’re playing in a stadium that’s 30 miles from your campus named after some Johnny Come Lately beer. My predicition is that there are more empty seats tonight than full becuase no Miami fans actually went to school there and the rest are the biggest fair weather fans in all of sports.

BankerDawg, DawginLex and DarinDawg…. what the heck?! What’s with all this civil crap?! I jest…it is appreciated and valued. Tech is going to have their hands full with this athletic team! They’ve got all kinds of things they can use to drive a defense crazy! I believe in our defense, but would be amazed if we don’t give up a couple of big plays to these guys. Miami’s speed could, if they lack discipline, equate a 200+ night for Dwyer as they over persue lanes….if disciplined; they keep Dwyer around 100 yrds and the rushing yards get spread out among the many other backs. If Nesbitt gets some assemblance of a passing game on track, look for two or three backs with 10+ yards! No pressure on the cane quarterback will make this game closer than the Clemson game… not sure my heart could handle that! GO TECH!!!

Ive been hearing the experts all week talk about how Tech is goin to loose and how this Miami team is so different! Unless im mistaken, the experts have said this the past few years and it has made no difference in the outcome of the game. Noone can deny that Miami has tons of talent, but what u fail to realize is talent alone wont win games! In highschool we always were more talanted then our opponents, but that didnt always end in a victory! A TEAM will always beat a team full of individual talent! Miami just doesnt have the focus to maintain their assignments for 4 quarters, especially when they are tired! I see a high scoring game but I still see Tech winning by 7 to 10! We have a much better secondary that FSU has, and im banking on the fact that Tech will never let 1 or 2 players beat them like what almost happened with Clemson! We are the better team and we should be 3 and 0 at midnight!

Your safety might be your downfall, but I would really look at the matchup between your outside LBs and the RBs, cause since you pretty stated your going to blitz the hell out of Jacory, the quick passes will be there.
Swagger, we coined the term, that’s what happens when you when 5 national championship om 27 years. Maybe, if your program had that kind of success, you would understand, but you will never undertand….It’s a U thing, and it’s all about the U.

NOT TOO MUCH TOUGH TALK TODAY HUH!!!?? It came down to two things. Like it or not Nesbitt CANNOT throw the football and if the run gets shut down by solid tacking the technical institution cannot move the ball!! I WAS THERE LAST NIGHT AND the technical institute section was as quiet as church during a sermon!!!! NOTE TO THE ACC the CANES HAVE FINALLY JOINED THE CONFERENCE!!

I’m afraid we just suck this year. It’s not a matter of a few adjustments or tweaking something. We just suck. Period.

Right now, it’s looking like a 6-6 or worse season. :-(

GT’s poor play against the canes show just how sorry both lines are. If Tech wins 6 games this year they will have exceeded my expectations. But I love the Jackets!!
