[knocking sound] Who is it?….Landshark

One of the great Saturday Night Live Skits from way back in the day. Candygram, Girl Scouts, Landshark. It’s all good.

Which brings us to a fun blog for the day.

Miami’s stadium, now known as Land Shark Stadium, is named after Jimmy Buffett’s Landshark Lager.

So, since there was no access to players and coaches today, I thought it might be fun to have a little fun with songs song by Buffett, and who they might apply to in the ACC. There’s lots of preview stuff about the game in the Tech section of ajc.com/sports.

So, here goes:

Bama Breeze: Virginia Tech. They can still feel the whoosh from the blowout the Crimson Tide put on them earlier this season.

California Dreamin (Buffett did his own version): Georgia Tech. What’s in California? The Rose Bowl? Where’s the national championship being played this year? That’s right.

Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes: North Carolina and coach Butch Davis. The well-traveled head honcho has brought a new winning attitude in his third year  in Chapel Hill after a failed stint with the NFL’s Cleveland Browns.

Come Monday: Virginia. What’s good about Monday? After the Cavs lose yet another game and bemoan their fate all weekend, they can start building hope again each week on Monday. Good luck with that.

Good Guys Win: To N.C. State’s Tom O’Brien, one of the good guys in the business.

Quietly Making Noise: Boston College. Al Spaziani has the Eagles looked good so far this season, but no one has said too much about them.

Time to go Home: Bobby Bowden and Florida State. Bowden desperately wants the NCAA wins record. He said he doesn’t want it for him. He wants it for his family. But he’s got to outlast Joe Paterno at Penn State, who seemingly has no plans to leave anytime soon, either.

The Good Fight: Duke’s David Cutcliffe. He’s got one heck of a hill to climb to make the program a winner, but he seems willing to give it his best shot.

Where is the Love: Miami’s Randy Shannon. He inherited a bit of a mess but has recruited well. He should get an opportunity to lead those recruits. Instead, there’s already talk he could be let go if his team disappoints this season.

Death Valley Lives: Come on, you know this one.

Defying Gravity: Wake Forest and coach Jim Grobe. He’s turned one of the worst programs in the country into a respectable team (FSU can vouch for that). How long will he stay there? How long can he keep winning?

Here We Are: This one goes to Maryland. A team that everyone seems to overlook every year, but has fans who have no problem letting you know they are around.

———————

Alright I’ve had my fun.

Catching up on a few things. A few Miami players have come down with the flu, but none seem like impact players. Of course, with the flu who knows how quickly it may spread to other players on the team.

———————

Now, if you feel like it, have at it with song titles and who you think they apply to in the ACC, and why. And, if you want to talk football, I’ll be back online around 1 p.m. tomorrow and will be glad to answer any questions you have about the game.

m, SHUT UP about “chan gomer gailey”. No one supports him. If anyone lashes out at you I guarantee you it’s not because they support Gailey, but because you’re an obnoxious moron that people want to shut the hell up. We don’t want to constantly be reminded of him. Do you want his memory to live on that much? Get a life and move on, man. I’ll “thank god and greyhound” when you’re no longer posting about Gailey.

This is catchy, Doug. I enjoyed it.
As for UNC, yeah, he turned them into a team with a winning way beating UCONN (a mediocre big east school) by 2 points…
And yeah… Dreams of California have definately taken place for me recently… but they are only dreams if we cannot play with intensity the whole game. Our tendency to fall asleep in the 3rd quarter will catch us sooner or later, and thursday is the day it will happen if we do not execute the WHOLE GAME.
Thus said, cant wait till thursday. GO JACKETS

Doug, I dont know about the whole song thing. I do know that UM is suffering from the injury bug, wheter that be physically or from illness. If I am not mistaken one of their starters was out with a broken jaw at the begining of the season (Some one punched him at practice?)

UM has a few injuries, including our starting DE who has a broken jaw. But what team doesn’t have injuries???? Miami doesn’t make excuses, win or lose!

“Where is the Love: Miami’s Randy Shannon. He inherited a bit of a mess but has recruited well. He should get an opportunity to lead those recruits. Instead, there’s already talk he could be let go if his team disappoints this season.”

Where is the talk coming from??? The magazines in the check out isle of the grocery store? Write only facts , not rumors! Shannon is a Miami boy who is loved in S.Florida, he is in his 3rd year coaching a team that started more FR than any other team last year. And that’s a FACT!

Should be a great game, and that’s a fact!

Da U, whats up with the guy with his mouth wired shut? Did somebody really punch the guy during practice. Who said anything about Miami making excuses anyways. Its all a dynamic of the game, and it does play a factor. As far as starting more freshman, we also started the most freshmen and sophmores last year… and? Both teams are young.

Joe, our starting DE was sucker punched in the locker room by a walk-on who had only been with the team for a week. It not only broke his jaw, but broke it in 2 places. The walk-on was kicked off the team, and has since apologized. There was actually an article today that said he has lost 30 pounds and will probably be out the entire year.

I can’t wait, should be a great game. I just hope we can hold GT to tunder 200 yards rushing. But that’s asking alot.

Roddy Jones might be held to under 200 yds rushing. So will Anthony Allen and Josh Nesbitt. However, Jonathan Dwysman will rush for over 200 by himself. Nesbitt may even complete a pass or two to his own receivers. But no matter. Did you watch the game last year? Miami isn’t disciplined enough to stay home and contain. Doesn’t happen at Thug U. Nothing has changed. Mark it down: GT wins 48-17, 500+ rush yds.

This is a good explination of what happened when a team (GT vs Clemson) doesn’t execute as stated by CPJ.

Johnson had a different take Monday.

“The thing I find amusing about football in general, not just us or whatever, it’s like if somebody struggles [as Tech did in the third quarter, and part of the fourth] it’s always something that you did and it can’t ever be anything they did,” he said. “Everybody acts like it was all some kind of an adjustment or they did something different. They lined up the same way all night and so did we. They out executed us in the third quarter and played with a little more intensity and fire.”

Very insightful knowing it wasn’t adjustments, but lack of execution. Four quarters guys!

Hi Doug, I think we will find out how good Clemson and Boston College are this weekend when they square off against each other. Should be interesting. I forgot about the locker room incident with Miami’s DE getting punched in the jaw. Maybe Miami and Oregon can square off in a Golden Gloves tournament after the season.

We’ll find out how good the new “U” is on Thursday night. Hopefully the flu situation is resolved with no players missing the game. Tech comes out on top again against the Canes.

“They have a good defense. Their secondary is good. Morgan Burnett gets across the whole field. And their defensive end [Derrick Morgan] is a beast. But at the same time, I don’t believe our offense can [be stopped].”

That’s true Joe Schmoe! How often does a good team playing another good team execute precisely for a full 60 minutes? Rarely. One team if not both figures out the other and that’s were real coaching comes in. CPJ made those neccessary adjustments in the 4th after CU made theirs earlier. GT won because CPJ counteracted CU’s moves. That’s what makes football great.

On the Um injury front:
Miami will be without defensive backs DeMarcus Van Dyke and JoJo Nicholas. Van Dyke was hurt against FSU and Nicholas has the flu. Da U are those guys starters or backups?

Cuttyshark…I think that Oregon guy could take anyone on UM. That was a good one on Boise ST. guy.

It is still unknown what kind of team Miami has. Miami played a close game with FSU and won. FSU then goes out and squeaks past Jax State.
I’m sure Okie State thought they had a good team when they beat a “tough” SEC opponent. We all know what happened to Okie State the next week.
Was Miami’s win a product of improved offense orrancid defense? We will find out tomorrow night.

Brundel and other Rude techies (not all of you)

Here are a few things you need to know about the difference between the UGA and TECH programs

1 When Georgia finishes 10-3 and #10 in the country it is a DISAPPOINTMENT!!!!

2 When Tech goes 9-4 and is not even ranked they think it is an all time GREAT season and that thier team and coach is the second coming

3 UGA beats Tech soooo much that Techies have victory RINGS made to comemorate the one time in a decade that they do manage to squeak out a win ( I mean Rings? Really? that is sad)

4 Georgia sells more of YOUR season ticket packages than you do when the Dawgs are going to play at Tech that season

5 You can’t sell out or fill up a 50k seat stadium WHILE UGA has a waiting list for tickets to a stadium that holds 93K and buy ins that cost thousands just for the right to get tickets

6 You are not a rivalry for Georgia anymore…you are the annoying little brother loses to his older brother in a game of HORSE a hundred straight times and then runs his mouth and brags relentlessly the one lucky time he does win comments here

Bowden guy, why don’t you give the chick thing a rest. Lot more pretty girls on tech campus these days. And I live in alpharetta where most guys who went to any school have hot wives.
So you or any dog fan need to shut your mouths squeaking by teams picked to not do so well.

Can’t wait to see this matchup. It should be really fun and glad the miami qb was running his mouth. Its got our defense amped up already…heard about it from C Taylor this am on 790. He wasn’t stupid enough to run his mouth though. But we will see how the anti-U does against the u!

Sunshine…I get somewhat of what Shannon’s saying, that he doesn’t want to give up the big plays but if GT gets 5,10,15 yards then will take that all night because we’re moving the chains and the clock. The less we see UM’s O on the field the better. Therefore, tire down UM’s D and then there goes the big play. That’s what our O is all about. So eventually, the big play will come at some point in the game. But I don’t think CPJ would mind if we have to march it down the field and score. GO JACKETS!!!!!

Also just FYI for you PJ has told his players when he first came in that they would NEVER lose a game in the rain because rain hurts passing much more than it does handoffs and pitches, but since you didn’t play football I guess you wouldn’t understand that kind of comment.

5 Yes, UGA wins the polularity contest. Next you guys will be voted Miss Congeniality.
4 Thank you.
3 UGA leads the series, but GT still has the longest winning streak in the series.
2 Being unranked at 9-4 would indicate a problem with the rankings system.
1 Finishing 10-3 and ranked #10, when you started out ranked #1, and lost to your in-state rival, and your biggest conference rival should be a dissapointment.

Coach Smith – Here are some other differences you left off of the list about the differences between GT and UGA football

1. UGA has 2 national championships but acts as though they are a program like Southern Cal who has 10 national championships

2. GT has double the national championships that UGA has (that’s 4 NC’s for those of you UGA fans who cannot multiply)

3. In this rivalry, GT holds the record for the most consecutive wins over the opponent which is 8 years in a row

Lovett faced 5 teams that used a lot of option/misdirection rushing since 2001: Cuse in 01, aTm in 04, and WF in 02, 03 and 04. He gave up at least 50 more yard/game than each team averaged in their other games and also significantly more yards/carry.

Opp rushing averages: 199 yards/game, 4.24 yards/carry.
Opp rushing vs. Lovett: 298 yards/game, 5.27 yards/carry.

Louisiana Jacket, thanks! I laughed out loud at my number 5, too! I find it MOST pathetic when a team, whose fans don’t consider us a rival anymore, is so desperate as to call attention to attendance records! TOO FUNNY!!! GO TECH!!!

The Greenville, SC paper indicates that the fake fieldgoal against Clemson and resulting touchdown pass was illegal, per the ACC. Apparently only 10 players left the field and our receiver stayed near the sideline and was not noticed by Clemson players. Is this an illegal play??

Paul Johnson talked about fake field goal on his radio show. H Dinich has reported that ACC declared the play illegal. Wes asked if CPJ has talked to ACC officials. CPJ said, “I have, but it still counts!” Said that he understands ACC’s view that it was deceptive, but that basically a lot of things we do is to deceive the other team, such as the dive, keep, pitch. Explained that there was no substitution for Bay Bay, and the line judge was aware that Thomas was still on the field and part of the play. Also said Clemson did the same thing on their pass play. Doesn’t agree the play was illegal, but sounds like we won’t be seeing it again this year.

I hate to pile on, but I have to admit this guy Roberson is just plain weak.

This “blogs are too hard, lets have fun” approach just doesn’t cut it. It’s just another opportunity for the idiots from both sides to slap away at each other.

And the Joe Cox things? Geez… Let’s get a real Tech guy writing this blog. Or, better yet, just kill this blog and we’ll all go somewhere else.

BowdenRules – As at any school, if you are uncool you will not get girls.

If you are uncool at Tech, chances are that you will not get into a fraternity, which is where most of the opportunity to meet girls in social situations is.

When I went to Tech, girls from Emory, UGA (yes, they came to meet guys who had a future), Auburn, Clemson (basically anywhere within 200 miles) would come in to spend the weekend partying at the frats. There was no lack of opportunity for attractive female companionship!

I’ve been on campus several time recently, as my son is now a sophomore at Tech; there are quite a few head-turning women on campus now.

Got this from Gojackets.com from GolgenTornado. Interesting stats on the new DC for UM:

Lovett faced 5 teams that used a lot of option/misdirection rushing since 2001: Cuse in 01, aTm in 04, and WF in 02, 03 and 04. He gave up at least 50 more yard/game than each team averaged in their other games and also significantly more yards/carry.

Opp rushing averages: 199 yards/game, 4.24 yards/carry.
Opp rushing vs. Lovett: 298 yards/game, 5.27 yards/carry.

What do you think GT’s better athletes will do running the “O”?

Who cares? Chan did good with the Steelers but couldn’t win at GT, no athletes! You dam* sure don’t have better athletes than Miami, not even close. You do have a great running game with a great scheme, but who cares. When Miami scores a quick 21 points your scheme will be out the door.

U love us or hate us, we don’t care!

Get off Doug’s back. Has anyone ever seen the English department at Tech? I do not even think there is one. Maybe we could get a Technical Journalism school and develope a Tech beat writer. Would also help with recruiting as we would have somewhere to put those big fast d lineman who usually are not too swift with the calculus.

superdawg, thanks for your prediction for the game. Since you also, if I remember correctly, predicted that the mutts would go undefeated and win the NC, then all I can say is keep up the good work.

Also, from what I read online, the head of ACC refs referred to the fake FG as a “simulated substitution,” which apparently IS illegal. I don’t see how, since Bay Bay never left the field, and the refs on the field were aware of it, that it could possibly be called a simulated anything. And since Clemson apparently tried the same thing (from what I gather, on their fake FG attempt), then the Clemson coaching staff should be ashamed for not seeing it. So what if it is “deceptive.” Hell, our whole offense is geared to deceiving the defenders on the other team; that’s the nature of the option.

coach smith: I’m sure you are aware that UGA RETIRED THERON SAPP’S jersey because they SNAPPED an 8 GAME LOSING STREAK to Tech. He scores 1 TD & UGA goes batdip. For someone that could care less about Tech, you spend a lot of time on the Tech blogs.

Doug you wrote on another article that tech win would “Be its fifth consecutive against the Hurricanes, making the Jackets the first ACC team to do that.

FSU did it from 1995-1999. So that’s not accurate.

Rain causes problems for PASS DEFENSE not the offense becuase the WRs know where they are going

“coach smith,” as you stated, Georgia Institute of Technology has to work to fill its stadium, vis-a-vis UGA’s seeming ease in filling its. But UGA is in the SEC (Sold-out Education for Colorbooks). That much we admit. But what you yourself have to prepare for, is this strong feeling that when all is blocked and tackled, run and thrown, this weekend, Tech is going to win a close one, and UGA is going to lose a close one.
