Nesbitt’s passing
First, some of you may have known that the Davey O’Brien Trophy folks are allowing people to vote as a component of their award. So, here’s the link: http://www.voteobrien.org/
And that brings us to today’s topic: Josh Nesbitt.
As yall know and I’ve proved many times in my rudimentary analysis of Tech, I enjoy football, but I’m not a coach.
Having said that, I thought Nesbitt looked very sharp in Saturday’s win.
He said afterward that he was very happy with his accuracy. The only pass that I can remember that looked similar to last year was the pass down the seam to Anthony Allen in the first half. Based upon the times I saw that route, or one similar to it in the spring, it’s a pass that Nesbitt and Shaw sometimes have trouble completing. I have no idea if that’s one of the more difficult ones to hit, perhaps any former QBs who read the blog can chime in.
He showed good touch on the TD pass to Allen later in the game. He underthrew Demaryius Thomas on the 56-yarder, but that’s not uncommon on a pass across the field.
But I thought he looked good in the pocket. He stepped through his passes and looked in control.
Now, it’ll be interesting to see the progress against Clemson, which likely will get more pressure on him than did the Gamecocks. Tech’s line didn’t allow a sack last week. If it keeps Nesbitt clean on Thursday, good things could happen for y’all.
And, it may need to. The Tigers had some success slowing down Tech’s running game last year, limiting the Jackets to 207 yards on the ground (I know that sounds odd, limiting…207 yards, but you know what I’m saying). The Jackets used two fumbles and four interceptions to win.

Nesbitt’s passes were pretty good, only if we can get the recievers to make the completion when they get their hands on the ball. I know it was JSU, but it did seem like Nesbitt had all day in the pocket.

If everyone remembers right, the clemson game from last year was at clemson after the Gardner Webb debacle. The offense did not start to even click till the week after at home versus FSU when Nesbitt was a little bit more healthy.

Nesbitt’s quarterback rating was north of 190 Saturday. Not bad for a 3-star qb running a high school offense. By contrast, the highly recruited Joe Cox had a qb rating of less than 100 running his big time college offense.
On another note, I am very encouraged reading the quotes of Clemson’s defensive players saying that they think the option offense is easy to stop. As I recall, Miami thought the same thing last year.

Thanks for writing this article. Your cohort Mark Bradley had pinned several of the missed passes squarely on Nesbitt. I was at the game and can tell you that several of the misses were a result of the receivers stopping on the route.(Emery Peebles would have had a TD early in the game if he hadn’t quit on the route) And then there was a big drop by 18. I like the way Nesbitt is throwing it right now and he’s only gonna get better.

I’m absolutely excited about what I saw from Nesbitt Saturday. If its any indication on what the season holds for Nesbitt, we will be doing very well.
On a different note, when is the injury report released for GT. I have a class with about 6 football players including Morgan Burnett and he came in last night with a cast on his wrist. My teacher asked and he said he broke his thumb. Have you heard about this? Can he even play with a broken thumb?

Yep, I agree that Nesbitt looked much better passing the ball. Our receivers are going to have to hold on to the ball. My only concern with Nesbitt is the propensity to fumble. Hopefully, that will not continue to rear its ugly head.

After one week into the Season, with Josh Nesbitt leading the way, Georgia Tech is ninth in the Country Passing Efficiency, to go along with its 335 rushing yards. I’d say he looked pretty good so far.
But that was only against Jacksonville State; not against a Team with the same caliber of athletes as Clemson. We should wait to see how things shake out after Thursday evening before we start to do any hand springs.
On the positive side of the coin, since Paul Johnson was using his Second Team most of the second half, and was only using a small portion of his playbook, we should get a better feel about how far the passing game has come.

Good luck vs Clemson Thur night. The comment from the Clemson player stating the option is easy to stop is correct, it IS easy to stop if every player does EXACTLY what he’s supposed to on the play. The problems begin when ONE def player breaks down or is out of position, and that can happen on every play. That’s what CPJ banks on, the defense won’t be perfect. Most often, he is right.

Most of the drops on Saturday were made by A-Backs. I personally would like to see more balls thrown to our receivers. Or, sneak Stephen Hill into the A-Back slot every once in awhile. We know everyone’s focus is going to be on Thomas.

Nesbitt has to take those fumbles out of the equation and think ball security. You are right, he does have problem overthrowing the seam pass. I agree with Louisiana Jacket, Doug: Please avoid calling Tech “y’all” in your blog. It just reminds us of where you went to school, and telegraphs that you could really care less about Tech. We’re happy with you writing our blog until you show us your red and black T-shirt like that.
As far as Nesbitt and his pass efficiency rating: It IS encouraging, because there were far more than nine 1A teams playing against overmanned teams on the opening Saturday; so even though we were playing a relative underdog, so was most everyone else. And, Nesbitt looked good compared to most everyone else. He’s gonna be a good leader this year.

Fumbles are not always the fault of the apparent player. Both the QB & the B back must make the same read. If not, a fumble may occur.
Kinda like to old 1950’s belly series where the QB & the FB make a read.

Tech82, not that it matters, but Nesbitt wasn’t a 3 star recruit. He was at least 4 stars and the #1 QB in the state. He came from a passing offense in high school. I thought he looked really sharp on Saturday which matches what I’ve been hearing about him all summer.

I predict Nesbitt has the best game of his young career against Clemson. Josh has a very strong arm was was pretty accurate against Jax State. I thought he could have taken a little off his passes when a couple were barely missed, but the receivers really should have caught those two passes. His pass to Allen in the end zone was perfect. The best is yet to come and Thursday night is a perfect time for it to occur. Go Jackets !!

I’m worried about ball security and dropped passes. I am encouraged that Clemson’s D thinks the option is easy to stop. All you need is one mental or physical lapse from one player, and Dwyer, Nesbitt, Roddy or Thomas is in the house. GO JACKETS!

No Clemson player said GT’s offense was a “high school” offense. What was said, by DeAndre McDaniel was in regards to stopping it… “It’s pretty simple…if everybody does their job, the offense is not going nowhere.”
And that is a fact. I’m certain tech and Coach Johnson count of people making mistakes against their offense… which leads to big time plays. To which other Clemson players responded…”“One of the biggest things is assignments… you’ve got to play your position. You can’t be a hero. When you try and be a hero, (Dwyer and Nesbitt) are taking it the distance.”
So there is respect, but no fear.
Looks like to be a great early season matchup.

It is not Mr. Roberson’s job to be a fan or be positive (or negative) about the Jackets. He is supposed to be an impartial, unattached observer. His role is to deliver to the fans – and non fans – what has happened and why.
If he is or becomes a fan of Tech, it shouldn’t come out in his writing or his views. If it does, he’ll find himself with another assignment. And fast. And that goes for any entity you can put in the place of the word Tech – Braves, Bulldogs, Hawks, Lassiter Trojans, whatever. He’s not supposed to be a fan.
Now, having known many of the coaches on the Tech staff for a long time and having seen that offense for most of my adult life, I can tell you this – it’s easy to become a fan of theirs.

How come no one seems to take into account the execution of the offensive players when discussing the success of the option? You make it sound like any big play is the result of a defensive mistake.
J-state had its folks in the right place on Dwyer’s first TD run, but the offence paved the way for him with 4 pancake blocks downfield.
Last season, UGA didn’t change its defensive schemes from the first half to the second half. Our offense executed better in the second half and blew them out.
Every game ultimately comes down to which team executes its game plan better and there’s no magic offense or defense that trumps that. If our guys don’t have their heads in the game, then we lose.

refering to the turnovers in last season’s game. GT scored 7 off Clemson’s turnovers while CU scored 10 off Ga Tech’s turnovers. GT didn’t win last season because Clemson had 6 turnovers. They won because they completed a touchdown pass late in the game and held on with good defense.

On a football note. Every team has a offense that they run, be it the pro style, spread, Option, I-Formation, Wing T, Run and Shoot. If a defense plays discipline football they will be successful against that offense. If that offense executes better than the defense defends than the offense will be more successful. There is no tricks or schemes that fool a defense. The team running the offense of their choice successfully with precision and aggression will always out perform a defense that doesn’t respond in kind. The phrase defenses catching up is radio media speak to do just that, drum up talk. Florida is not running a different offense today that Urban Myer didn’t run when he was at Utah. Same offense just executed better with athletes that can make the right decisions when called upon. This is Spurriers problem in USC. The QB’s have not been good enough to make the right decision that his Florida QB’s made in the past. As soon as Nesbitt really gets his reads down and he can react as the natural athletic he is and the O-Line learns how to play with more aggression from snap to whistle, this offense will be hard to stop.

Let me clarify a few misconceptions some of you have: David O’Brien is not a fan of the Braves. Baseball, yes. But you can’t be a fan of the team you cover. You can love the sport, the action, the moments, etc, but to do this job, as I’ve explained many times, means you have to be impartial.
Heather Dinich loves college football, but not the ACC. And on it goes for every beat reporter at every newspaper or credible newsgathering organization.
It’s the way it is. It’s the way it will be.
And, since we live in a time of “love it or hate it” politics and polarizing attitudes by many people about a lot of things, being objective doesn’t automatically mean that you dislike. It means that you try and see both sides of everything.
So, I don’t know you got “had for lunch” in Gainesville, but it wasn’t someone from the fine Gainesville, Melbourne or Orlando papers, who do an outstanding job covering Florida athletics.

Ok fine they can’t be fan’s i understand this since you are a professional. I am not saying you haven’t done a fine job in a good many of the articles you have posted. I am just saying even if DOB isn’t a “fan” and HD isn’t a “fan” at least with them I can feel their passion for the sport they are covering, it doesn’t seem like a job they are doing. I am just saying with them I very rarely get the feeling that they are pulling against who they cover but with you SOMETIMES “not alot” but sometimes like today you really push that line.
I am glad you do this because I know it isn’t easy, BUT choose your words more carefully so at least it comes off like you are somewhat of a fan of what you cover.

What we have had is a history of lackluster coverage unlike UGA where the obvious passion for the program would show in there stories. Believe me I understand your position and would encourage you to just let it go. As I encourage my Tech fans to do the same. I am impressed with our running game. I am not impressed with the fumbles. If we put the ball on the ground tommorrow like we did Saturday, it will be a long night for us.
Also, if our kicking game (PAT’s & FG’s) does not improve, we are going to lose a couple of close ones later in the year.
Otherwise, we can go undefeated. GO JACKETS!!!!

If tim tucker or chip wrote the same sentence in a uga blog, it would be 500000 x worse then here. they would going crazy calling for them to be fired. They go after Richt for one road loss. Imagine what they would do to a petty ajc writer. What’s the big deal where the writer can’t show some love for the team he covers. If he doesn’t like the school, he should quit as that will affect his writing as we’ve seen today. I just don’t get this. And dont’ tell me that the ga blog authors aren’t pro dog. I’ve read their blogs over the Summer and they are. Doug seems to be all non chalant about his covering GT and personally I want someone who actually likes the team he is covering.

I can only hope that some of the overly-sensitive GT fans are very young fans. This blog should be discussing GT football, not the likes or dislikes of Doug. WE should at least make sure he has made an inflammatory statement before we begin our criticisms.

I’ve never written to the Tech beat writer’s blog before,; and I certainly guarantee you that this will be the last time that I do so… Folks, I’m no fan of the AJC or its employees, nevertheless, its my hometown daily. He (Doug Roberson) is the beat writer, you should expect, hope, and want him to be neutral. Furman Bisher made the mistake of forgetting that once in his career. You have a chance to have a person give the good and the bad of what is happening. When you don’t have an agenda, it serves you better. Paul Johnson knows that, Hewitt knows that, D-Rad knows that, and hopefully each of you will embrace that fact…
On a personal note, I have held the Georgia Institute of Technology close to my heart. When other schools were cowering like cowards. Mr. Ector, Coach Dodd, and then Coach Carson stood up like men and allowed a group of people to get a quality education even when some the Alumni threatened them. It was not always smooth or comfortable, but they did the work of grown men. You have a school that you can be very proud of, please don’t tarnish it by being petty… Enjoy the games, but it is just that, a game… Passion, Pride, Tradition… The Old Gold and White… Tech!
