What to wear, what to wear

If you wear white to Thursday’s nationally televised game against Clemson, and you see someone else wearing a similar outfit, don’t panic and rush back to the car to change.

It’s a whiteout by design, meaning fans of the Institute are supposed to dress up like they are headed to Wimbledon.

During last year’s whiteout I thought it would have been cool to see Tech come out in the white helmets. I don’t know if it’ll happen this time.

——————————-

Wide receiver Demaryius Thomas said there was no big key to the 24-yard catch he made to beat Clemson, 21-17, last year in Death Valley:

“Get open. Get the corner to bite and get open. Catch the ball.”

He did, catching a pretty pass from Josh Nesbitt with 5 minutes, 22 seconds remaining. This after dropping one a bit earlier.

“I had dropped the ball earler in the game. I just wanted to come back and make the play,” said Thomas, who caught four passes for 101 yards in Saturday’s win against Jacksonville State.

Clemson running back C.J. Spiller, who missed last year’s game with a groin injury, said he and his teammates have talked about that game a little bit during the offseason, and that he’s used it to motivate the team’s defensive backs.

“Those guys know what they have to do on Thursday,” he said.

—————————

Is it just me, or does it feel odd that Tech’s baseball team will start fall practice today?

————————–

That was quite the thriller that Miami and FSU played against each other last night. But, does it show the potency of the offenses or the ineffectiveness of the defenses that they ran up 72 points? And what does this mean for Georgia Tech’s chances of winning the ACC?

The last time Clemson won in Atlanta (2003) , the Tigers defeated Middle Tennessee by a 37-14 score the week before. Clemson enters this year’s game in Atlanta coming off a 37-14 win over Middle Tennessee.

And, the Clemson vs. Georgia Tech series has been the most competitive series in the ACC over the last 13 years. Ten of the last 13 games have been decided by five points or less, including a six-game streak between 1996-01 in which every game was decided by exactly three points. That might be a first in college football history. We aren’t talking by three points or less, but exactly three points.

Finally, Clemson has struggled to score in Atlanta, in fact Clemson has not scored a touchdown in Atlanta since 2003 when it won 39-3.

It will make it harder to beat UM now, but it is still possible. The team has to focus on Clemson 1st. Sure, UM has 3 more days to prepare, and some high emotions, but remember even Gailey was able to beat the ‘Caines 3 times in a row! UM tends to be on the arrogant side, and their D aggressive and undisciplined, so we should do ok on offense. It’s their offense that was hot last night, and hopefully our secondary can play better than FSU’s. Need some pressure on Harris, and an INT would help.

Long as Tech doesn’t come out with white flags everything will be fine. These 5 day turnarounds between games are too quick especially with a holiday being one of the 5. almost forgot, Clemson safety DeAndre McDaniel had a few things to say about Georgia Tech’s offense, courtesy of a compadre on a Clemson site:

“Just do your job. You do your job and keep them from cutting you and stay in your gap, you can shut them down.”

“It’s pretty simple: If everybody does their job, the offense is not going nowhere.”

Double negative aside, what do you think about McDaniel’s comments?

Spillman is 100%…That is simply rumor to help Dabo out with his fan base in case he loses. He did not play in the second half Saturday to ensure he is healthy against the bumblepees. He’ll get over 300 yards of all purpose effort this Thursday (130+ on kick returns, 150+ rushing, and another 40-60 on receptions). Count on it. Tigers dominate this game…LSU showed how easy it is to shut down this team! And the Tigers go on to win the Atlantic and play Miami in the ACC CG.

GA Tech Insider

GA Tech’s punter better get his act together or the Jackets better hope they keep him off of the field. I could have poured a cup of coffee and read the paper before he got his punts off on Saturday. Don’t think that Clemson didn’t see that as well.

Also, GA Tech better get some pressure up the middle on defense to fluster the untested QB, also, they to need to run some zone blitzes to watch for the bubble screens and quick slants; things Clemson will try to run to help the young QB get passes out quickly without too many reads.

GA Tech’s defensive strength will be in their back seven so if they can clog the middle from runs up front, forcing everything to the outside so they can pursue, also getting pressure without blitzing, defensively, they will be stronger than many people expect. I expect that Cooper Taylor may end up being a key player this coming Thursday evening.

Offensively, ball security will be key, as will players maintaining their blocks; all players maintaining their blocks – Linemen, A-Backs, and Wide Receivers; when called upon. The guys have to attack the defenders rather than be attacked, unless, of course, the play is designed to allow the defenders to take themselves out of the play.

I would also expect Clemson to try to take Jonathan Dwyer out of the game early, like UGA did, so I would expect Roddy Jones and Anthony Allen top get some early touches, as well as Josh to carry more early.

If Clemson is putting nine men in the box, look for GA tech to put the ball in the air to soften the defense, and look for D. Thomas to have another big night. You might also see Stephen Hill lining up in the same lineup with Thomas on Thursday, causing some Wide Receiver/Defensive Back match up problems for the first time. Receivers have to make catches when they’re open, even difficult catches.

Kickers have to produce when called upon; GA Tech can’t leave points on the table; bottom line. Special Teams will be critical, including kick off and put coverage.

Watch Julian Burnett, Number 40, on Thursday night. This kid is special.

Paul Johnson didn’t want to open his kimono too much during the Jacksonville State game, holding back much of what he has available in his arsenal for the coming year, not wanting to tip his hand so that Teams, like Clemson, will know what to prepare for. However, playing lackluster has nothing to do play selection but execution, and there better be a whole lot more hunger on Thursday against Clemson (than there was against Jacksonville State) or it will be a long night for the Jackets.

ATTN CLEMSON FANS IN TOWN!!!

Please please be sure to wear protective gear when walking anywhere near Terrorist Tech’s campus this Thursday night. You will likely have a gun held to your head while a big scary man takes your wallet. The Tech students are used to this, and may neglect to even mention in in your travel itinerary.

Try not to be intimidated by the smelly bums begging for your change or trying to sell you crack on North Ave.

If you are unsatisfied with your seats, please fell free to move to one of the MANY open seats located just about anywhere you would like to move to get a better view.

If you show up without a ticket, please knock on the ticket booth window VERY VERY hard in order to wake up the ticket booth salesman. He is not used to making transactions, and he views his job as nap-time opportunity.

The time of the game is subject to change, as is the case more times than not. One of the 7 Season Ticket holders may be stuck in traffic and will be running late. So no need to be there at the start of announced kickoff time.

Expect to see most of the “fans” in the half filled stadium wearing anti-UGA gear, and continually yelling anti-UGA chants throughout the duration of the game. The abundance of open seats is a direct reflection of this hatred they posess.

When the game is over, please feel free to rush the field, act like fools, stomp on the Tech logo at mid-field, or pick a fight with any of the terrorists in the stands. There has been no celebrating in that stadium for years, and the Athletics Director has approved celebrations of any kind, even for opposing opponents.

If you make it out of the ghetto alive, please drive safely back to Clemson, and be sure and stop by the Varsity to use your free Naked Dog or Chili Dog coupon located on the back of your Terrorist Tech ticket.

Asian jokes or Turban jokes will not be tolerated in the North End Zone seats. 90% of the 150 seats filled will likely take offense to these jokes.

Finally, thank you for risking your life for a night in the hood!!!

Doug Roberson,

I’m wondering what you think about GT’s performance in those three areas you highlighted a few weeks ago, that GT needed to improve on this season? One was special teams, one was passing efficiency and I can’t remember the other one (probably something to do with the defensive line0.

The kickoff coverage was pretty good. And the punt return team was awesome (thank you Jerrard Terrant). So it looks like they’ve got something to work with on special teams this year.

I was browsing the stats from the first week of games and who do I see on the team leaderboard for passing efficiency? GT was in the top ten after one game. Nesbitt looked better passing the ball (although he still needs work hitting wide open A-Backs down the seam). In fact, it was the most complete game I’ve seen so far from Nesbitt, even though he didn’t play the whole game.

Defensive line still needs work. I didn’t get the feeling that the DT’s were dominating. But I don’t know how much TJ Barnes played (and I personally think, just having that size in the middle makes a difference). Any analysis on the d-line?

GT4Ever

September 8th, 2009

GT will be just fine if they stop Spiller. He’ll get some yards but I don’t see GT letting him run wild. Parker’s inexperience will show through. I expect GT to pressure him early and often. True GT was lack luster in their opener but I think they were looking past JSU. They’ll be up for Clemson. Heck, they’re our second biggest rival. How can you not be ready to play. Their goal is to win the ACC cahmpionship and they’ll be fired up from here on out. GO JACKETS!!!

morgwreck243

The Miami-FSU game makes me worry a bit more than I was about those games. The defensive strategy for those games will be our offense. Just grind it out and keep their offenses off of the field. I also think that our defense is equal to either of those teams, if not worse. We’ll find out about the defense Thursday night.

As for the Clemson game; that should be another close one with Tech on top at the end. Once again it will be the World’s Largest Traffic Jam after the game. Clemson is talented, but I just don’t believe in Dabo. He’s just a money saver until they completely payoff Bowden and the economy kicks back up again so they can afford the next hot coach.

And for those dawg fans who can only make fun of our stadium. Really! If that is all you have? Just making fun of the stadium or the amount of tickets sold? In other words ya’ll can’t find anything with our coach or team and you just know that your team is going to get one helluva a mutt whooping after Thanksgiving. Hahahaha!

Clemson only out gained Middle T by 62 yards giving up 299 total yards to their 361. Didn’t look like they were ready to play either. I just don’t see them winning a lot of games with their Frosh QB. Spiller will have to carry the load. Stop him and we’ll be just fine. Our offense will be just too good for Clemson to stop. We’ll wear them down and when they stack the box JN will make them pay. Bay Bay and the other guys will light them up. I see about 300 rushing yards and 175 passing yards. GT will win 31-7. GO JACKETS!!!!

Ramblin wrecker, the three areas highlighted were special teams, passing efficiency and turnovers.

Special teams had more plusses than minuses, with Tarrant’s punt return for a TD. The kickoff return coverage was an area that was solid last year and statistically about the same on Saturday. Punt coverage was hard to say because the punts were so odd (more on that in Wednesday’s paper), and field goals, well, Blair missed another one from 40 yards or longer.

Turnovers, well, 5 fumbles and 3 lost. Can’t do that against a lot of teams.

Passing efficiency was much improved. Nesbitt’s line would have been much better had the dropsies not occurred. The overthrow to Peeples wasn’t Nesbitt’s fault, Peeples stumbled. The overthrow to Allen was on Nesbitt, but you are going to miss one every once in a while.

I’m a little curious about the polls, as well. UNC beats I-AA team and moves up two spots. Tech does and stays the same. Ohio State barely wins and barely falls.

It’s all a guessing game, for sure. BYU wins and rockets up the polls, Oklahoma drops 10 spots. Who knows?

It’s about what season upon season turns into…not just this one. In fact, I’d say we aren’t ready yet…not for a top 10 finish. I would guess 9 wins this year…then the bowl for a chance at 10.

Next year…and the year after..and then year after…well, things should get better and better. Not just one “miracle” season.

optionoffense:

You’re right. The foundation has been laid for GT and Coach Johnson will continue to build upon that and when I say “miracle season, I mean that in the sense that all of the hard work from the season before and spring and fall camps comes to fruition and everything seems to fall in place and before you know it, you are where you envisioned your team to be.

Dawgs fans are getting used to the house being knocked off of the foundation, last year was a prime example. True, UGA was overhyped and overrated to start the season, but when reality sets in you begin to wonder what it’s going to take to get to that next level. It raises alot of skepticism about what is going on within the organization and where we are headed.

Well we agree on something. As far as UGA…Coach Richt is a good coach..is he gonna hang around longer than he needs to though? Who knows…a fresh start is always good now and then. If I were UGA, I’d certainly keep a current number for that DC that is at Texas right now….

I just watched the replay on ESPN360 since I couldn’t get it Saturday in Chicago, and it was great. I hope ESPN keeps it up so I can see all the games this year.

Tech had good luck with the white-out last year on ESPN so it’s a clever idea to repeat something that worked and try to build a winning tradition with it. I’m delighted Tech FINALLY got all the golds on the uniforms to match and I like the all white uniforms as a new look. They should be put Velcro or buttons to keep the side stripes on the jerseys and pants lined up with each other. I’m not crazy about the gold side stripes on the gold pants, however. They should put wide black borders on the stripes to give them contrast. Otherwise, it looks dumb to me. I’d like to see Tech occasionally wear the traditional home white jerseys and gold pants with the white stripe and black borders down the side as during the Joe Hamilton era and the 1990 National Championship way uniforms for big games either at home or away.

For those critical about Tech’s performance Saturday, esp. Dawg fans, keep in mind the following obvious points:
1. The game was pretty much over after the first play – the 74 yard TD run by All-American Dwyer,
2. Tech had over 300 yards of offense in the first half and led 31-7.
3. Nesbitt’s passing and the receivers looked good which is very important.
4. Dwyer did not play in the 2nd half.
5, Tech played nearly everyone on the bench in the 2nd half. Jax State’s last TD in the final minute of the game was against the water boys and cheerleaders.
6. Jax State is a good team with an impressive record last season.
7. Tech did not want injuries to key players so they played mostly the subs in the 2nd half.
8. Tech did not want to reveal too much for Clemson and Miami to see, so the play-calling was pretty conservative.
9. Roddy Jones didn’t play, although he could have.

GO JACKETS!! BEAT CLEMSON!!

I think I’m with optionoffense on this one.

The Jackets (along with a few others in the ACC) are looking at changes for the better in terms of national relevance. Those who will retort that any team below the top 10 is nationally irrelevant and therefore the whole ACC sucks, etc., are failing to consider that there are 120 college football teams. To be in the top 25 and having ANY kind of bowl streak means your program does not suck. That said, Tech has spent too long stuck in third gear at around 7-9 wins a season. With CPJ and the better in-state recruiting we are looking at the possibility of 10 win seasons (yes plural) which means more exposure, championship opportunities and bowl money. That, if capitalized on, will mean our entire athletic department trends upward for at least the next three years or so. Additionally, this process can be supercharged if we beat the Dawgs a second time and begin convincing more recruits to come to the ATL instead of Clarke County.

So if we look hyped way too early, it’s because we are. But the possibility and opportunity is undeniably there…it’s simply a question of our alumni, AD and fans treating CPJ right ($$$) long enough to turn things around down here.

ACC Championship within 3 years, MNC game birth within 5 – it is more possible now than any time in the last 20 years.

I don’t want the Richt situation to turn into something akin to the Fulmer scenario where he refuses to change or grow in order to utilize the talent of the kids that are recruited and before long the players are’nt buying it.
I’m not so worried about the defense, I think they will be improved this year but it’s the playcalling that I’ve never been a fan of since Bobo took over. Too conservative and from what I’ve seen since last year, it’s stale and predictable.

Good luck against Clemson Thursday night.

To all GA Tech fans;

The kickoff against Clemson, this coming Thursday, is actually scheduled for 7:45, NOT 8 PM, as reported by the AJC.

Fans should arrive early so you can enjoy some festivities and avoid some parking issues.

Don’t forget, Tech fans, Pi$$onaDawg is right, the game is a scheduled “white out,” and Clemson is coming to town with a true freshman as their starting QB. Everyone should be at Bobby Dodd Stadium rocking from the start; it could make a huge difference for the Jackets beginning with the opening kick off.

It will also be a great time to make a statement to Miami that the Jackets will be ready for them the following Thursday, so let’s get the Team pumped up for prime time!

Our Yellow Jackets are in such a great position right now it is scary. To all of those that feel that the offense is one that you can stop. Just take a look at Navy. They are running our system, have been for years and still almost beat Ohio State. The difference is they have all the tools to run the offense effectively. This is what frustrates CPJ. Better athletes in size and capability should produce better results. And it will!!! When it finally clicks in the minds of our players it will be scary good on the Flats. Anyone that thinks that you can stop this offense when run properly is fooling himself. It is 11 on 11 football and just like any other offense, execution is key. All eleven handle there responsibilities and the ball is in the endzone. There are many occasions when our backs don’t carry out ball fakes or miss a hole, or our QB makes the wrong read or waits to long to make the pitch. Our A-Backs miss a block or drop a pass. We should have had 62 pts on the board Saturday. So start there. What would our season record look like if we score 62 pts a game. The one thing I noticed at practices in spring and fall, no one stayed after practice to work on their weaknesses. So, if you don’t put the extra time in to get better than you won’t get better sooner than later. Our breakout game is coming and when it comes we will be a force to reckon with. And quite frankly a force that will produce multiple wins instead of loses.

No major conference endured a more humiliating opening weekend than the ACC, which went 4-6 in non-conference play despite the fact six of those games came against I-AA opponents. The league lost all four of its BCS-conference matchups (NC State fell to South Carolina, Virginia Tech to Alabama, Wake Forest to Baylor and Maryland to Cal), while Virginia (to William and Mary) and Duke (to Richmond) fell to I-AA foes. Mind you, many of the victims were picked near the bottom of the conference anyway, but it doesn’t make the idiot who said the league could be “poised for prominence” look very smart.

Bobby Brown, I kind of agree with you but Mark Twain also said “Profanity grants a certain relief denied even to prayer.” All UGA fans aren’t idiots, though some certainly act like it.

I think the Miami win could be good for us and good for the conference. Everyone has talked about needing a couple of elite teams in the ACC. IF, huge IF, Miami can beat Oklahoma the ACC would have some serious national prominence with probably three top 15 teams at that point. I said it on another blog and I’ll say it again. The Duke, UVA, and WF losses are going to be good for our conference. Parity is not what we need to get two teams to the BCS. That’s a distinct possibility this year, especially when FSU beats BYU.

Has it right, I think. Great post.

CPJ is a fantastic coach. And if given enough time, I think he pushes Mark Richt out of Athens.

The question is how long can we hold him?

He’s 51. No doubt he’s at Tech for 4 or 5.

Would one of the Big Boy’s offer a 56 year old head coach $4mil?

Ans. I don’t think so.

I think CPJ runs a decade of dominance over UGA, wins 4 or 5 ACC championships and maybe 1 NC!

He retires at Tech, second only to the late, great, Bobby Dodd.
