I think you’ll enjoy this

So, I was riding home from the Falcons game last night with a friend of mine and I got a call from a producer of the Scott Wetzel show on Sirius Radio.

He asked if I had time to come on. Sure, I said. I assume yall want to talk about Georgia Tech, I asked.

Yep, he says, my boss has picked Georgia Tech to win the whole thing.

Short pause on my end.

The ACC, I ask.

No, he says, the BCS championship.

Short pause on my end.

I turn to my friend Scott, who can hear the conversation, and say to him, Sure, why not.

A few minutes later I’m on the phone with Mr. Wetzel.

Yes indeed, he is picking the Jackets to win the whole thing, defeating Ohio State for the title.

He asked a couple of interesting questions:

Other than Georgia, which team does Georgia Tech want to beat more than the others. I said Virginia Tech, reasoning that they are the defending champs, and that Georgia Tech lost to them last year.

He asked which team does Georgia Tech need to beat to make people stand up and notice. I said North Carolina, reasoning that Tech defeated Miami and FSU last season, and lost to UNC. Plus, they would play them early enough that a win against the Heels, who are supposed to have a solid defense, would make people go hmmm. (dropping a little C+C Music Factory on you….I hated that “band” in college)

So, I’ll throw those two questions out to the floor. Tell me what you think, and why.

I totally agree with GT going undefeated this season. I also picked them to win 9 games last year and no one listened. At least I am not alone this year. One other thing, Why do teams with two losses play for the BCS championship? I mkean should we even bother playing the season. Perhaps Florida should play Texas this week and we can crown the winner National Champion. But if you ask me, we need to play the games and if any team is undefeated and all others are not, they are in. Stupid not to let things get decided on the field.

I, by total chance, heard the interview on XM Radio and wished you had sold the Yellow Jackets more. Not once was Dwyer mentioned in the whole conversation. Nor the rest of the backfield, which may be the best backfield in the nation at the moment. The Yellow Jackets DO have a possibility of a MNC, if they stay healthy and can execute every week. You should believe it.

They have a good chance of going undefeated. But so does Notre Dame, and it doesn’t mean that they’re the best team. Just my two cents.

Other than Georgia, definitely VT. But not because they are defending champs but because they are picked ahead of us.

I would also agree with the UNC pick – insightful. They shut us down last year so its important that we light up the scoreboard against them so nobody gets the idea that they have our offense “figured out.”

And, as previously noted, not mentioning Dwyer was a missed opportunity to get his name out there as he is one some Heisman watch lists. I expect objectivity in your articles and I know you aren’t/can’t be a fan but I think it would have been ok to pump up Dwyer and the Jackets a little bit. I think that’s why Scott called you in the first place – to add some substance to his decision to put Tech in the #1 spot.

Anyone who was a fan throughout the 90’s would appreciate beating FSU more than any team besides UGA. I realize that they have been down the last few years but last season was the first victory for us over them in how many? 12 meetings? Of course I personally watched Charlie Ward beat us in basketball and football so maybe I’m biased.

Would say Virginia Tech and Florida State. Most prognosticators pick Florida State to beat Tech at their place so that would be a real big win. With Tech this year it may not be so much specific wins but how well the team plays, particularly the defensive line. Talk Tech football at: http://www.bbuzzoff.com

Last year, when everyone said Tech would only win 3 games, I bet people they would win at least 8. That was after I witnessed a horrible spring game. Johnson won at Navy without athletes. Think of what he can do with athletes. This year Tech may lose one game if that. If the team thinks they can beat anyone by just walking onto the field, they will not do so well. Johnson knows the psychological side of coaching and I think he will have them ready for every game. I believe they will control time with the run and keep the opposing offense off the field. If they get the passing game in synch, no one will stop them. They will go to the big show.

One other thing. I have attended Tech games since I was a kid. It is poor sportsmanship to boo the opposing team when they come on the field. You can’t have a game without them. This did not happen when Bobby Dodd coached Tech. Polite applause for the opposition would show a lot of class.

I agree with the answer about wanting to beat VT most of all, aim for the defending ACC champ. I think the game we NEED to win most of all is at UVA. We got spanked by them last year and we haven’t won up there in what, 18 years? If we can’t earn a W this year, then we probably never will.

If GaTech goes undefeated and say Florida, Texas and USC lose to top 5 teams away in close games, I think Florida, Texas and USC should be ranked over GaTech since we play such a weak schedule. VaTech is probably top 20 at best with no offense. Georgia may be top 10, but will be physically beat up by the end of the season.

I only went to two games last year – UVa and UNC and neither time did GaTech really seem up for the game. So this whole discussion is way premature. We had the athletes to destroy Gardner-Webb last year too and look what happened.

How many people forget that the G-W game was quarterbacked by a slow-footed pocket passer recruited for a different system? Seriously people, we don’t have any QBs like that on the team anymore. If Tevin Washington or Jaybo had been available for that game, it wouldn’t have been 10-7. Besides, we didn’t lose, so move on.

To whomever only went to the UNC and UVa games – I went to all the home games, trust me those weren’t representative. The team played sloppy most of last year and got bit by it in those games, but they’ve had 9 months to work with a perfectionist head coach on cleaning that up.

To whomever said they can’t compete for a national title with this offense, I’d like to remind them that Ga Southern won TWO national championships with this offense and played for a third. That third they played for? It was in Johnson’s second season as head coach at the school.

The team we need to beat is whoever we play the current week. The team we want to beat should be the same.

There is absolutely no reason to look forward or to underestimate any other team.

The good thing about the LSU game is that it should be fresh in their memories.

If we overlook or trip on any game, it just lessons the perceived importance of a future big game.

Tech has a lot of tough games on its’ schedule and many that could bite them should they lose focus.

Gardner Webb was a unique situation, trying to utilize a non-option qb that was liking putting a square peg in a round hole.

Winning and losing aside, the team is just more fun to watch now. Gailey was BORING and predictable. At least PJ has some fire and appears to be about as good a fit as anyone could hope for.

As far as hoping for an undefeated season, you can always hope. Would I say that is my expectation, probably not. Could it happen, yes, until they lose the first one.

Lets just win the current season that ends on 9/6.

It all comes down to Wins & Losses.

Do I think GT has a legit shot at 12-0. Damn Right.
If GT crushes UNC, then the rest of the schedule will be a SLAM-DUNK.
Will that be a “factor” in the BCS picture. Yep.

I could see GT being 12-0, with USC, TX, OK, FL, OhioST all with perhaps 1 loss each. Do I think GT would get selected to play in BCS NC game? Not likely, unless GT wins EACH & EVERY by 20+ points.

The 1st most important GT game: UNC.
The 2nd msot importnt game: UVA.
UVA just seems to have had our number in Charlottesville since 1990. Gotta exorcize that “demon.” CPJ will do it.

GT lost to UNC in Week 9 in 2008. GT lost both OGs and both OTs in first half of 2008 UNC game, and yet, stiil put up 423 yds of Offense. UNC lost to VT in 2008…ONLY…b/c UNC starting QB went down with UNC up 17-7 in 3rd.

VT beat GT in Week 3: 20-17.
Miami beat VT in Week 10: 16-14
GT DESTROYED Miami in Week 11: 41-23.

Get the picture?

When GT wipes the field with FSU and VT in back-to-back games, GT will crack the BCS Top 10…and then…all the BCS-NC talk will REALLY begin.

Here’s my predicted ACC-Coastal finsh:
1. GT
2. Miami
3. UNC
4. VT
5. Duke
6. UVA

Alabama Jack, SO true!!! That was a painful game to watch….wait ALL this time for college football and THAT’S what we got?!

JB, yeah….. those western kentucky and georgia southern matchups were REALLY ‘manning up’! From what I’m reading on the uga blogs, Ok St. is overrated and doesn’t deserve to be on the same field as the mutts. Seems to me, that the opening game fluxuates in level of competition…seems like yesterday when the Jackets were sending the highly ranked Tigers of Auburn back to the locker room with their tails between their legs…. good times! I’ve been saying something about this for a while.

Paul Johnson has won mulitple national titles at Ga Southern.

Jim Tressel from Ohio State won multiple national titles at Youngstown State and then won a national title in his SECOND YEAR at Ohio State.

If that’s not enough of a comparison…

Bob Stoops won a national title at Oklahoma in his SECOND YEAR.

Urban Meyer won a national title at Florida in his SECOND YEAR.

So don’t let how young Paul Johnson’s tenure is at GT put you off of the possibility of something great. It’s been done before. Plus GT has a tough, but winnable schedule. If GT is undefeated going at regular season’s end, why not them? GT is already getting 10 times as much love and publicity under Paul Johnson as they ever did under Chan Gailey, or hell George O’Leary for that matter. National college football writers/analysts have taken notice and like what they see. For example, Kirk Herbstreit of ESPN and Stewart Mandel of Sports Ill. have both predicted GT as ACC champs. And if they can do that, all they need is to generate enough buzz and excitement to get into the conversation with Florida/Texas/USC/whoever else is at the top.

JB – You must also remember that Nesbitt was banged up most of last year while trying to learn and execute a new offense. Didn’t do too bad, did he.

Anyway, the same can be said for almost any team with respect to their quarterback, losing the starter usually hurts and costs games.

I guess we’ll just chalk your comments up to “expectations and hopes.” Your expectations and hopes are different than any GT fan, as I would expect. They just aren’t based in reality, just as the expectation of either UGA or Tech to win the NC this year. That is more of a hope.

First of all, everyone please stop taking yourselves so seriously. It is ok for fans and bloggers to think National Championships and predict who we will beat down the road, because we don’t play the games!!! So, let’s continue. GT would want to beat VT more because that is the team to beat in the Coastal Division. What would make people stand up and notice is for us to win all of our game this year for the following reasons:
JSU, MSU, DUKE,UVA,VANDY- Great teams beat those that you are suppose to beat.
Clemson, Miami, NC,WFU- Great teams beat teams people may doubt you can beat. This awards GT respect.
FSU,VT,UGA- Are teams with national recognition and to make a run for the National Title you have to beat the nationally recognized programs.
We have all we need to return to the title picture, all we have to do is WIN! We can do it. There is no doubt about it. If all of our opponents win there games prior to playing us it only increases our chases of reaching the top. Remember, your opponent is only as good as what they show you when you play them. Who know how great a team can be when they are matched up against you. I have always taken the approach that I am better than my opponent until my opponent proves otherwise. GT, Let’s Make it Happen. To be totally honest about it, any talk of a national title, much less an ACC crown or a BCS bowl bid is way premature. Because of injuries and other unforeseeable events, ANY team that tries to project such is simply fooling itself. (Which goes a long way towards explaining the great humor we find in those silly dawg fans who, the next time they post something original, would be a first).

The back to back Thursday games is, to my mind, the first stumbling block. This isn’t to imply that Tech can’t beat both Clemson and Miami but it’s extremely rare for ANY team to win consecutively in those ESPN games. Clearly VT and FSU will be tough games and Georgia may or may not prove difficult (who can say with any real accuracy what Joe Cox can or cannot do–another thing to laugh at those UGA fans about as they act as if he’s something special, furthering their own denial).

Offensively, I think the ball will move up and down the field both running and in an expanded passing game but defensively there’s no doubt we have question marks among the front 7. These potential problem areas can be addressed, but it remains a mystery to all of us until the coaches have to out of a possible necessity implement some changes.

All that said, I believe Tech could honestly win as few as 7 or win as many as 10. All we can ask for is a solid season….and there’s no doubt there are plenty of pieces (in both talent and coaching) on hand for that.

Tech beats Dawgs… what do they do? Award themselves with a ring, get humiliated in a bowl game against a 5 loss SEC team, finish lower in the polls than the Dawgs, recruit some more 3 star players, offer free cokes and hot dogs to sell season tickets and open with a patsy in 2009.

Now you tell me which program deserves more respect.

P.S. when is CPJ’s baby due? I guess it all those free hot dogs..LMAO!!

Hrmmm… lots of banter. I hate to look ahead… but to answer Doug’s questions:

- Other than Georgia, Tech would want to beat VT more than the others. Why? To avenge the loss last year, and knock off the “best” of the ACC (and Coastal Division) right now.

- Looking ahead, a victory over Georgia and VT would make people notice the most on a national level due to their preseason ranking right now. FSU probably follows on the list (not UNC for national recognition). However, IF you want Tech to be considered for a NC, then many, many things would have to happen beyond Tech winning out, with at least the following scenarios (I am probably missing something anyway:

1. VT beats Bama and VT remains undefeated except for a loss to Tech… and Bama goes on to win the SEC West and the SEC Title (knocking the Dawgs off, yes that means the Mutts need to beat the Gators) but Bama has to lose another close one to a Top 10 team along the way.

2. UGA – is undefeated and ranked in the Top 3 coming into Tech only to lose to Tech in an epic battle but Tech has to be the clear winner… thus getting a lot of national attention near the end. With UGA going on to lose a close one to Bama in the SEC Champ… otherwise I think Tech could get passed over for UGA (a la Texas last year).

Note: scenarios 1 & 2 can playout slightly different, but UGA , Bama, and UF would need to beat up each other just enough such that each team had a total two losses (one conference loss, and one loss each to Tech, VT, and FSU respectively) and eliminating the rest of the SEC by default… including LSU and Ole Miss.

3. FSU would also have to run the tables with only two tough losses being to GT (regular season and ACC Champ). Note: that means the Noles beat the Gators giving them some needed National recognition… and remember FSU does not play VT this year.

4. Misc: The Big 12 beats up each other with two losses each, USC loses badly along the way, and the Big 10 beats up each other (mainly Ohio St. and Penn St.)… but the one team that could crash the BCS party is Boise State.

Tech vs. Boise State for the NC!? Wouldn’t that be something?

Even if Tech ran the table, there is way too much that would have to happen in the BCS politics for them to get the nod over potentially multiple one-loss teams in the BCS rankings. Playoff system anyone?

Paul’s Johnson, I think I would find another handle. This one makes it appear that you have a man crush on Coach Johnson. Which I guess you do based on some of your other post. I guess that stomping he put on your dogs last year really impressed you. I would bet my house that you will turn the TV off tomorrow at half time. The Cowboys will have you by 28 pts. in the first half. I also will inform you that our offense will have over 500 yds. tomorrow and at least 45 pts. Keep in mind the 2nd and 3rd stringers will play the second half. Go Jackets !!!!!!!!!! You had better retaliate now, because you won’t have anything to say Saturday afternoon.

Ramblin Wrecker, I too think that GT is going to have a good team in CPJ’s second year, however there NO comparison between GT and FLA, OK, or Ohio St. Those teams have won their conferences recently and also don’t give out rings for beating their biggest rival for the first time in nearly a decade. I personally wish GT the best of luck anytime they don’t play Ga, however, I also have realistic expectations. I see GT 10-3 IF they win their bowl. I’ll be a bigger believer when they finally get over the hump and win the ACC.(Which I hope happens this year) You must learn to crawl before you walk. At least CPJ has put the excitement back into the program in year one. In year two you shoot for the Conference title. After that MAYBE you start thinking beyond the ACC. Just my humble opinion. Best of luck until Nov 28, may we both be top 10 at that time

Don’t worry, he will be yanked after his 2nd int in the 1st quarter. Then you will go to your Jasper Stanks imitation tail back – Richard Simmons, who will fumble twice and the game will be over. You can then turn the TV and wait to watch the Highlights of our game on ESPN. The best you can expect is 7-5, but I’m betting on 6-6. You will be looking for a new coach next year.

Paul’s Johnson <—– made me laugh!

Geez, one three point win in eight years tatoos a GT on Superman’s chest.

First thing you World-of-Warcrafters or whatever need to do is win your division, then your conference. The last time you had a chance to do that was against Notre Dame, er Southern Cal, er Ohio State, er Duke (that’s it!), you crapped your diapers.

Look, face it, the ACC is a basketball conference which is nothing to be ashamed of. Everyone loves college roundball for two weeks in March.

Just happy to put things in perspective.

I gotta laugh at the doggies making fun of JSU when they themselves are the undisputed kings of cupcake schedulers. Tech usually opens with a UA or ND or PSU. Doggies usually don’t even play a real football team until about game 4. I’m really surprised they didn’t back out of the OSU game.
Now you’ve got a preemptive loss excuse because Cox is “sick”. The only thing halfway respectable in Athens was the football team. Now you don’t even have that. (I hear there is a decent gym team). Let’s don’t even mention the academics. Doggies will struggle to win 7 FB games this year. BB either for that matter.

Paul’s Johnson, TRUE, the mutts play a hard schedule THIS year, but that has seldom ever been the case in the past. Depending on the poll, Tech plays 4 preseason top-15 teams also. The difference, however, is that the Jackets have an excellent chance of beating those teams, while the mutts will be losing to Florida and Tech, possibly LSU and Ok State, and (though unranked) at least one of the following—SC, Ark, and UT (even with that goon Kiffin as coach). A UT loss would probably be the most humiliating one ever for the mutts, and I WOULD LOVE IT.

Heck, the “joke by the coke” played one heck of a joke when they too the sledges to the headges and WON! So we aren’t such a joke that most UGA fans think we are.

It is pretty pitiful to see a bunch of fans so desperate. When you back a loser it starts to work on you mentally and all you have to do is read some of these teck fan comments to see how envious of the DAWGs they are. The envy is at a sick level. I think we’re getting way ahead of ourselves. I was at the game Saturday afternoon, and it was a fun game to watch, but I was left totally unimpressed. The defense was soft at times and the receivers dropped 4 passes that should have been easily caught. That, and the option looked fairly rusty. Nesbit was holding on to it when he should have pitched several times. If we play like this in a few days, this article is a moot point. Pre-season rankings are a bunch of crap and mean nothing. I don’t think you can have a realistic opinion until after we wade through Clemson and Miami. Here’s to improving drastically by Thursday and kicking Clemson’s ass. GO JACKETS

I don’t see how they are going to go in to Tallahassee and come away with a win. If it were not for the fumble on the goal line last year in Atlanta, Tech would have lost that game. In the 4th quarter, Tech could not stop the FSU offense. If Tech’s defense doesn’t get more endurance, they won’t be in any title game consideration.
