Oh captain, your captain

Coach Paul Johnson said on Wednesday that the team will name three captains on Thursday for Saturday’s season-opener against Jacksonville State.

He said it’ll be one senior from the offense, one from the defense and one, wait for it, from special teams.

So, question No. 1, with those criteria, who do you think should be THE MEN on Saturday?

——————

CPJ was pleased with the team’s practice on Wednesday, which was a little bit shorter than usual. The same will be true on Thursday. As Johnson has said, the important thing is to get the first game healthy, and Tech is close to meeting that goal.

——————

Hope you got a chance to read esteemed colleague Mark Bradley’s column on Johnson, as well as my story on Johnson’s “freaky” knowledge of the offense and his intuitive play calling. Both are on ajc.com right now.

—————–

Johnson said the depth charts on ramblinwreck.com should be the starting lineups for Saturday’s game.

Here they are, cut-and-pasted from that site, to save you a step. Once again, these are courtesy of the fine people in Tech’s sports information department.

Well, if seniors, it would have to be Sed on defense and either Cord or Brad on offense, right? No other seniors to choose from.

Not many seniors-a young team (that should be great for years)! (that should keep Johnson in Atlanta for a while)

Taylor at free safety instead of wolf-is that new?

Many of these players will be interchangeable on the defensive side of the ball, and plan on seeing lots of offensive linemen rotating in during the game now that we have some depth and experience on that side of the ball.

Jacksonville State has a stand out defensive tackle who made some awesome plays in last year’s BCS Championship game. Go to isportsweb.com and read the preview of the JSU game for more information.

Sed Griffin on defense and Dan Voss on offense. Voss on offense for 2 reasons, he’ll throw him a bone since he isn’t starting and Coach Johnson hasn’t been happy with the way Cord has a habit of missing practices. For more Tech football information visit: http://www.bbuzzoff.com

You run a scheme that will get players hurt.
The drop off in talent/experence from 1 to 2 is big.
From 2 to 3 is huge.
This has always been the reason Tech could not and will not compete with the upper echelon teams in the ACC or any other BCS conference.
You just don’t get enough of the 3 and 4 star recrutes to remain competative.
You get good players but not good enough.
Combination of high academic requirements and hard core ball players.
A rare combination. Just to few of those type players.
A good athlete that is smart. Few and far between.
Good luck with the 2009 season. Prove me wrong.

Oxymoron, well, garsh darn it! Tech has four national championships to suggest otherwise!!! Geeks?! You mean the young folk that will be working to find a more fuel efficient means for transportation, energy, etc….?! Basically, the ones that will work to provide for a more economically sound way to maintain a comfortable lifestyle?! Compared to the gas emitted from all the double wides with uga banners hangin in the ‘living rooms’….we’re cool with your ignorance! Open some windows before you speak again!

Assuming you’re a Georgia fan, I saw your depth chart. I’ll take Green, Curran, and Atkins and you can keep the rest. What does that say about your talent vs. ours. I like our chances better with our running backs, quarterbacks, defensive backs, and o-line.

First of all it isn’t anthony barnes its T.J barnes and he is second string D-Tackle for the person who asked. Also I think they do have the free safety and woof position mixed up because all we have heard from PJ and Womack is that Cooper is our wolf guy.
I am suprised though that Voss and Claytor are still the backups…I really hope they get back into starting roles soon because I think they are our better guys for the o-line.
Otherwhise I am excited to see anthony allen as a kick returner and Tarrant as our PR, Also can’t wait to see big TJ show why he belongs when he gets into the game.

Where is Anthony Barnes? Tech won’t always be in the Wolf (nickle) formation. When they’re in a standard 4-3 against more run oriented teams, Barnes will be that 3rd LB.

Coop was moved from Wolf to free safety a couple weeks ago. Players are moving around a little to get the best 11 on the field.

Voss and Claytor are backups because they missed time in the spring and Bedford and Sellers used those extra reps to pass them. It’s all still very close. There is no big talent drop off as has been suggested.

Both of Paul Johnson’s recruiting classes have averaged over 3 stars. I also trust our coaching can evaluate HS talent better that the services. I submit Orwin Smith, Jullian Burnett and Jamea Thomas as examples. These players will be big time.

Cooper Taylor moved back to FS from wolf about a week or so ago. I’ve heard conflicting stories as to whether A) He’s just so awesome at Safety that they needed him back there or B) that he wasn’t quite physical enough at the wolf position.

In either case, he’s still starting, so I don’t put a lot of faith in point B being correct.

I guarentte you I am not a bandwagon fan haha… I honestly thought you were talking about T.J Barnes because he is the first Barnes that came to mind my mistake on that one I admit.
I know that Claytor and Voss missed time but I just like them as our starters because they had so many reps last year and Voss was one of our leaders once Gardner got hurt (just my opinion)..
I agree with ComputerNut though about recruiting crap, and just want to throw in that this is usually a UGA statement of why they are better, along with filling their stadium (thats why I usually ignore comments such as GET SOME 5*’s BS)

David, We have the same players on the offensive line that scored 45 points on UGA last year. Paul Johnson wants his lineman to be smaller and quicker. We have lineman that weighed 315 last year that weigh 285 now. Perfect wt for our offensive tackles. We are not worried about their size. No one will stop this offense.

but stinger..uga will have guys on the def line that did not play last year due to injuries. you guys should get used to seeing a ton of LSU type games (38-3 beat downs) the first half of that UGA game was dominated by the dogs. you score 1 offensive TD. UGA took one quater off( 3rd Quarter) and it came back to bit them in butt. that wont happen this year..they will be more focuse. remember UGA had just beat tech the last 7 years ina row and now was going to the locker room up 26-12 and your defense couldnt stop uga,,i will give credit to the jackets for not giving up but what else could you do but hope that uga wouldnt take you seriously and coast the 2nd half. that offense will be shut down more often this year than last year..doesnt matter that this is the 2nd year running it. hell my nephew run the same plays that tech runs..but what else do it expect from a coach that never played football. when that type offense and those type of players tech has, goes up against teams with better players up front like UGA has this year, wont do jack against the type of players ugs or any other team with a def line that is like the LSU and UGA . you guys dont seem to see that when gaily’s players leave you wont have the good players to run the ball..you will have navy and ga southern type players coming in and we all know how well those game turn out when they play the big boy conference. funny how all you tech fans were saying the same thing when chan was here his first year. like i said ,get used to seeing 38-3 type games when tech plays this year. tech will not beat UGA this year with those draw in the dirt plays..look for uga to smash those little guys up front and knock one of those qb out of the game. last year was a fluke and uga will prove it this year and all things will go back to normal.. 8-4 and 7-5 season again for tech and a nice BCS bowl game for UGA…
