A little bit of love

I know that yall only read ajc.com for all of your sports news, :) , but I happened to glance at a couple of other sites today.

What do you know, Georgia Tech has suddenly become the favorite in the ACC, according to CNNSI.com’s Stewart Mandel. He predicts the Jackets to make it to the Orange Bowl.

But wait, there’s more.

ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit confirmed Mandel’s vote (a little jab at ESPN’s practice of confirming already-published reports. As if ESPN confirming it validates the legitimacy of the news), and also said that Tech is going to make it to the Orange Bowl.

I thought y’all would be interested….

———————

Coach Paul Johnson was asked if he had any memories of his first season-opener as an assistant coach at Avery County high school in 1979. He said he didn’t, though he joked he may have had a mohawk.

If you have any questions about the team, I’ll check back at 1:30 or so tomorrow.

In your Jacksonville State article you reported last year’s score as 31-7, when it actually was 41-14, GT. Just thought you’d appreciate the correction. Thanks for all of the good articles. Are you going to do prediction blogs before the games each week?

We need to keep our players focused and let them play the games one at a time. Basking in newfound media attention never does a team good.

Herbstreit has been pretty good to Tech since Paul Johnson took over and has been positive towards the program. Mandel didn’t like Gailey and is another one who turned positive with the arrival of Paul Johnson. Hear more on Tech football at: http://www.bbuzzoff.com

One side of me says “it’s just talk that doesn’t matter.” But, the other side is winning and saying that it does matter.

ESPN and Sports Illustrated, the two leading sports purveyors in the world (I’m sure the AJC is in the top 300), carry a lot of weight. If Tech can live up to expectations, this is the difference between maybe a 6 ranking or a 3. If Tech falters along the way, it’s also the difference between a mediocre bowl or a good one.

Unfortunately, perception is reality, at least for now.

This team definitely could make it to the Orange Bowl or better, and it wouldn’t surprise me. Yet, it also wouldn’t surprise me if they only win 7 or 8 games. Three tough conference games in September, only 1 home game in October and that’s against Virginia Tech. They better come out swinging this season.

I remember Ken Swilling telling a reporter prior to the 1990 season that he thought the Jackets would go undefeated. When challenged by the reporter, Swilling pulled out the schedule and asked the reporter to show him one game where Tech would be overmatched by their opponent.

While I am not predicting an undefeated season, as I look at the schedule I can not see a single game where we will be overmatched by our opponent. If this team is able to stay healthy and stay focused on one game at a time, we could have a truly great season.

We all saw last December what can happen when the team starts reading about how good they are and looks ahead. Stay focused boys. One game at a time. One play at a time.

I’m glad the talking heads are finally giving us some credit. I’m pretty sure the only reason is because Evans is out, but my buddy brought up a good point the other day when he said that VT’s backfield is just as deep (if not deeper) than ours. Like I said, I’m glad we’re getting some national street cred, but I hope it doesn’t go to our boy’s heads and the whole season winds up being similar to the Unspeakable Bowl. GO JACKETS!!!

I think having high expectations (from outside the program) and then meeting those expectations (or even exceeding them) will do more for your program than simply exceeding low to moderate expectations (like GT did last year). Particularly in a sport that chooses its champion with a large subjective component (opinion polls). I mean if your ultimate goal is to win a national title (which I’ve heard current players say), then at some point you have to impress the opinion givers enough to be a top ten team in the preseason. Ask Auburn, you can’t start in the mid teens and win it all, even if you go undefeated. So GT needs these preseason expectations to get where they want to go.

I think that having Paul Johnson as coach is already paying dividends (obviously on the field) but off it too. I think voters didn’t think too much of Chan Gailey, and it showed in the polls. Sure there were moments along the way where voters had to acknowledge that GT was doing well, but as soon as they faltered, the fall in the polls were dramatic. I think voters give Paul Johnson the benefit of the doubt, and even if GT takes a loss, it won’t drop them completely from the polls. The preseason love from Mandel and Herbstreit is a show of respect for Johnson.

I know this is silly to say, but I have this feeling like something big is going to happen this season for GT…bigger than we can imagine. Paul Johnson won multiple national titles at GA Southern. A good contemporary is Jim Tressel. Tressel won multiple national titles at Youngstown State. Then moved up to Ohio State and won a national title in his second season. Bob Stoops won a national title at Oklahoma in his second season as head coach there. Urban Meyer, took Utah to an undefeated record (essentially the same as winning it all at the I-AA level) and then won a national title at Florida in his second season there. I’m just saying….

Paul Johnson is an exceptional leader in the world of college football. His track record is second to none. This team will be having a very good season this year, and we need to get out to Bobby Dodd and support them on game day.

If Tech has the team to win the ACC this yeay, then they will definately make it to a better bowl than the Orange Bowl. I think that CPJ needs to ban the reading of newspapers and media websites for the entire team, for the entire season. I cringe everytime we are favored going into a game. Hopefully that will change in the future.

“4th nd Reggie Ball” – If I am not mistaken (and I am not), The same outlet that conducts the poll for biggest party schools in the country also conducted a poll in 2008 that ranked worst fans. UGA ranked 3rd. It really depends on your definition of what a good fan is. I personally think you are an idiot. Is it sad that 95% of UGA fans’ yearly income doesn’t even meet the minimum donatin for season tickets. All you have in your life is football, which is sad because your team will be mediocre at best for a long time to come.

Always have to have at least ONE UGA fan come in here and talk…and wouldn’t be the GT blog without it haha…

hey 4th from my recent memory Roddy is still running down the sideline, Knowshean has his ankles broken by Burnett, and nobody wanted to tackle Jon the Diesal Dwyer… but hey I know how you UGA fans would look 40 years into the past to prove how your right so I know my saying any of that doesn’t make a bit of difference.

Also I am going to re-use the statement I posted a few weeks ago when their was a post about this. Number one the number undergrads at Tech 15K…The number of those from the states who actually like football 10-12K…the number of those who will work in the state of Georgia after they graduate 6K MAYBE…..
Also we don’t have a lot of NON-GT alum who are fans…you see we GT fans are 90% most likely to have attended or at least had a relative attend GT…Unlike the 85% of UGA fans who NEVER attended UGA and NEVER will BUT will continue using their life savings to buy tickets.

Also since you are retarded—> stadium holds 45K – 26K(season tickets sold)- 6K(student tickets given out)= 13K tickets left MAX but what am I saying asking a UGA fan to do math is as much a joke as the majors at UGA!

I would venture to say that there is a large portion of student tickets….when you have 20,000 or so students, not including grad students, it skews the numbers a bit. Also, the 80/20 rule applies here as well.(google it) 20 percent of the fans(actual UGA grads) hold 80 percent of the tickets. They intern invite their family, etc… No one is saying that there is not a zillion UGA fans in Georgia, just that most don’t have the means to obtain SEASON tickets. If I am proven wrong then I will correct myself. I tried to put some logic in there for you, seeing as how Logic is the largest word in your vocab.

Yes, we all now that UGA has won a lot of games, but have you actually accomplished. 1 title and a few SEC titles. Coming from the North in 1987 the Program with the richest Football history was and still is Georgia Tech. Granted your success of late has is really boosted the profits and branding of the Program. But, ask yourself why? All that I know is watch what happens when Tech beats the crap out of you for the next 10 years and all of a sudden Sanford Stadium will not be so crowded anymore.
Anyway I agree with most of you that Tech will have a great year this year the cards are in our hands and I actually believe the ACC will have one of its greatest years of late. I believe NC State will start us off right on Thursday night. NC State don’t make me a liar!!! Lol. Tech has had a successful year but that success came with a cost. They fumbled one time to many, over threw Roddy Jones for the winning score and got a bad call to stop the drive that game VT the winning touchdown. They didn’t show up mentally for the North Carolina Game, One fumble to many against UVA and they thought they were the SH*T against LSU and got spanked. So, there is a lot to keep this team grounded. Not to mention a No nonsense Coach that learned a lesson himself against LSU and will not let that happen again. So, let’s pray like everybody else that has the ability to have a great season for a healthy team of players throughout the year and the luck of the bounce to reside in GT’s favor. If the players actually read these blogs (which I hope the are smart enough not to), just remember one thing. You control your destiny which is controlled by the way you think and the actions you take. Think like Champions and Act Like Champions and you will have another piece of hardware that those stinkin’ dawgs don’t have, I did.
