I’ll say this, after reading the course descriptions for those classes, I don’t know how in the world anybody graduates from college anymore. Of course, you know the old joke about journalists and math classes.
I also hope you enjoyed the special section previewing the college football season that was in Sunday’s paper.
Anyway, we’re six days away from the first game (depending upon when you read this). While I was at an outing Sunday afternoon, someone asked which player is going to make the most improvement this season.
My answer: Josh Nesbitt.
Johnson has said as much over the summer, and then he added last week that Nesbitt played the last half of last season with a bad ankle.
Based upon the improvement the offenses have shown between years 1 and 2 at Johnson’s previous stops (as documented in the special section), Nesbitt’s confidence and efficiency with the offense should be evident early against Jacksonville State.
Johnson’s quarterbacks have rushed for more than 1,000 yards in the second season. Can Nesbitt do it? Will he improve his passing percentage, which was in the low 40s last season? Will he improve his yards per completion? Will he hurt teams with his passing this year?
I believe he will, and if so, this will be an interesting year to cover Georgia Tech football.

Nesbitt will be greatly improved…. IF HE REMAINS HEALTHY. His improvement will be a nice change from the lack of improvement that Reggie Ball showed during his 4 seasons under Chan. I now think we have the right coach and the right QB in place… now lets hope the special teams also improve.

I agree with Steve. It is going to be extremely hard for Josh to stay healthy, but IF he does, this is going to be a special year offensively for sure.
I am also hoping the offensive line improves along with the special teams. If our offense can win some games for us early on, maybe our defense can improve enough along the way to actually win a big one for us later in the season.

A bit of news: Cameron Tringale was named to the Walker Cup team, which is what he was working for during the summer. I would guess his strong showing in the U.S. Amateur helped his cause.

Steve – I agree with you on both counts. It’s really nice to be excited about the mental progression of a player, specifically the one who touches the ball on every play. I haven’t had this kind of excitement since Reggie Ball was a sophomore (before I knew he would never be developed).
Also, Nesbitt does need to stay healthy, particularly through September. Two things should contribute greatly to this: better O-line and RB play should mean fewer touches for Nesbitt and resting in a lot of 4th quarters
I don’t think Nesbitt will run for 1,000 yards because of the increased use of pitches and quick handoffs as well as a little higher perpensity to throw the ball. The TO really isn’t the only play in the books.

Yes, I am excited about this season on the Flats, but I do agree with the sentiments of GTBuzz85, Minn Jackets, Engy on Education.
I do believe Nesbitt has a big year, but it don’t think he will have to gain a 1000 yards to be sucessful for the Jackets. We have a lot of offensive weapons in our second year for the Coach Paul Johnson.

The one thing you are going to see under Paul Johnson is more and better QB’s. And QB’s that are are coached UP.
Under the chan gomer gailey error, every QB he had got worse under him…not better. AJ Suggs and Reggie Ball both regressed under chan gomer gailey.
Well, thanks to God and Greyhound, chan gomer gailey, the worst coach in the history of the free world, the coach that destroyed Tech football for 6 long, sorry years is gone forever!! Any Tech fan, and especially Tech websites (like the Hive) that supported him and defended him and tolerated his miserable mediocrity and helped him destroy TECH football….all of them suck just as bad as chan does.
With Paul Johnson, we have a real college football coach…one that all Tech fans can be proud of and excited about….and one our opponents fear.
But all this enthusiasm and national attention is only possible because DRAD had the courage to get rid of the worst coach in history, chan gomer gailey…Thank God and Greyhound.

Josh looked good throwing the football in the fall scrimmages. Last year he sailed a lot of passes over the heads of the receivers but his footwork looked a lot better. With Dwyer, Allen, Nesbitt and Jones coming at defenses from all angles there will be a lot of defensive coordinators with ulcers this year. What made that even more impressive was that he did that for Mars Hill College against that football power house, North Greenville University!! The only thing I know about Mars Hill is that they have a pretty good community theater group there in the summer.
Meanwhile, GT recruit Charles Perkins runs for 303 yards and a TD for Collins Hill against Parkview.
Actually, Parkview could probably beat both Mars Hill College and North Greenville University.

Amazed at how much better not only GT but football in general is covered by the Macon newspaper over the AJC. I have been an avid AJC reader for 30+ years and this past year has really seen it go downhill. Macon Telegraph…you have done outstanding!!!
The GT blog has someone that lacks both football IQ and most especially any caring or loyalty to his responsibilities. Why not have a GT fan contest of some kind to see who wants this job? State the amount of money it pays and the weekly responsibilities and I guarantee you would get better articles and much less criticism.

I’m like everyone else here, I’m quite concerned that Nes remains healthy. Last year he had a hamstring problem 1/3 of the way thru the season, if I recall correctly; I hope he’s strengthened those hammys.
Also, I think there is some merit to teaching the QBs what to do AFTER they get rid of the ball (like get out of the hitting zone). I imagine there are a lot of DCs that will tell their guys “I don’t care if he has the ball or not, I want him knocked down on every play”. A lot of the time injuries happen when a player is not paying attention and gets rolled up, etc. I’d be worrying about that with all the defenders following the flow of the play; I can just see some DT falling into Nes’s legs “unintentionally” after we’ve rolled up about 300 yds rushing.

I really think Jordan will really step up along with Tevin to secure that backup spot (and just for reference Jaybo was only there as a placeholder until PJ could get a better quarterback for his system)..
Things I am hoping to see though at the first game
1. D-Line really shows that it can hold its own and allow our LB’s and Secondary to make plays, they don’t have to be great but they have to hold their own against teams we play.
2. Who will step up and become are #2 reciever to give Nes another option when passing.
3. Will our offensive line jell enough in this game in order to withstand the rough next 2 games against an athletic Clemson and Miami teams?

At least GA Tech was able to recruit great players under Chan Gailey, they made Bowl games consistently, and they upset Top Twenty Five Teams every year. Please, pray tell me, m, why is the Chan Gailey era so much worse than the Bill Lewis era?

If he remains healthy, I believe Nesbitt runs for around 1,100 yards easy. As far as his passing efficiency goes, well that remains to be seen. He certainly can’t get much worse. Nonetheless, his decision making will be much better, which will equate to more yardage for everyone else.

Chan Gailey fired by Kansas City! The article says he was fired by Georgia Tech. I am not a Tech fan, but thought I recalled Gailey taking the job as head coach of Notre Dame… lying about his resume… and then not being invited back to Tech after that. He quit at Tech and wasn’t allowed to return after his embarrassment at Notre Dame. Is that not what happened?

Chan is I’m sure a fine guy, but anyone who has a Calvin Johnson on his team and gets the ball in his hands as few times as he did in losses to Duke (13 game ACC losing streakat the time) and North Carolina (1-7 at the time) and can’t call an offensive game any better than he did against Wake Forest in the ACC Championship Game deserves some criticism as an “offense play-calling coach”. I felt sorry for Reggie Ball because all the pass plays were either bombs or flare out passes…no passes over the middle short. At least now with CJ we see the star players being better utilized and we actually see screen passes and passes to the tight end to keep the defense honest. My criticism of Chan was that he recruited good talent but didn’t know how to use it and would not let his offensive coach earn his money. By the way, GTInsider is right….Bill Lewis was even worse.

I originally wrote this on the CALM blog, but didn’t get any response so am trying again. All of the pictures in the AJC covering our practices are showing a more “OLD gold” helmet this year rather than the baby crap mustard yellow from last year. I despised those things and hope to goodness that a change has been made. As for Chan Gailey I agree with M. Kansas City, I can certainly feel your pain.

m, seriously let it go. Chan didn’t have a losing season, didn’t miss a bowl and was a season away from the ACC championship and a 9-4 season. While he wasn’t great, and never was very inspiring he was serviceable, and never once got us caught up in mass scandels. He dealt with the scholarship infractions and now we move on. Plus re using insults (chan Gommer Gailey) is a sign of weak intelligence and if it’s one thing tech fans hate most, its someone representing OUR school that prides itself in intelligence with such behavior. We need to hold ourselves up to a certain standard otherwise we are no better than the “Dawgs”, no offense to the 90% of dawg fans that act like decent people.

As for the jaybo comments, I have to be honest, I dont see quarterback in this system as important as Offensive line + A Back. In any other offense the quarterback is of primo importance, in this offense he just a cast character. Still an important one but probably less so then any other kind of offense I have ever seen. So Jaybo’s throwing ability has little to do with his quality to the system, its little more then a diversion as it is a real tool. In this offense its 80% reading the triple option, and I thought Jaybo as a TRUE FRESHMAN did a pretty darn good job last year.

Rich Cirminiello of Foxsports makes a bold prediction about Nesbitt provided he has enough attempts to qualify, Georgia Tech’s Josh Nesbitt will lead the ACC in passing efficiency. Yup, that’s the same Nesbitt who pilots the Jackets’ triple-option attack.
