Records (or CDs) were made to be broken

With the talk from the players and coaches about how much better the offense is going to be this season (and I believe it will be based upon some research that will appear in Sunday’s college football preview section), I got to wondering which Tech records could be broken this season.

So, starting at page 136 in the very fine media guide put together by Dean Buchan in the Institute’s Sports Information Department, I’m going to list a few that could go kapppplooooooeeeeeyyyyyy (I don’t know how to insert an audio file into a story).

——————-

Before we begin, this is all off-the-top-of-my-head stuff.

Most Net Rushing Yards, Season: 1,562 set by Eddie Lee Ivery in 1978. I can see B-back Jonathan Dwyer busting that one.

Most Touchdowns Rushing, Game: 4, set by several. I can see quarterback Josh Nesbitt, Dwyer, or one of the A-backs taking over that one.

Most Touchdowns Rushing, Season 19, set by Robert Lavette, 1982. You-know-who could take that one.

Most Rushing Yards by a Quarterback, Game: 130 set by Reggie Ball in 2006

Most Rushing Yards by a Quarterback, Season: 734 set by Joe Hamilton, 1999

Rushing Touchdowns by a QB, Season: 9, set in 1962

Highest Yards per Carry Average, Season: 7.2 set by Dorsey Levens, 1993

Most Rushing Attempts, Season: 692, set in 1975

Highest Yards per Carry Average, Season (team): 5.3, set in 1993

Most First Downs Rushing, Game: 26, VMI 1975

Most First Downs Rushing, Season: 175, set in 1975

100-Yard Games, Career: 18, 1981-84

———-

Summing up a few things that are in the notebook online and in tomorrow’s paper: it appears Roddy Jones will be back practicing full time, but may not play against Jacksonville State simply because he hasn’t been able to practice.

Scott Blair won’t handle punting duties this season. Chandler Anderson is the front-runner for that job right now. More on the kickers in Friday’s paper.

Sean Bedford and Brad Sellers seem to have won starting jobs for now on the offensive line, but the jobs may not be settled for a few weeks.

Pretty sure Josh had more than 130 yards rushing last year against VPI&SU.

Don’t think Dwyer will set any records for number of carries or yards per carry. Think he has a shot at season TD’s, and TD’s in a game, and 100 yard games for a career.

Like last year, I expect one of the A-Backs to lead the team in yards per carry, but wonder if they’ll have enough carries to qualify for a “record” (see Roddy Jones’ average last year).

The new clock rules and yards per carry statistics will keep GT from any records on rushing first downs in a game.

Great goal for us would be about 300 yards per game rushing and 150 passing. With the new clock rules, that would be pretty good!

That can’t be right. You said the following record could be broken:
Most Rushing Yards by a Quarterback, Game: 130 set by Reggie Ball in 2006

But we all know that Nesbitt already broke that record last year against VPI.

Not saying it can’t be broken again, but either your research or the media guide is incorrect.

By the way, Nesbitt rushed for 151 yds that game http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/boxscore?gameId=282570259

With the stable of backs in the running game, the only record that needs to be broken is single season rushing total as a Team. I see this offense going over 4,000 yards on the ground for the season, and another 1400 through the air. That translates into an ACC Title for the Jackets.

4 TDs in a game by one player seems like it will go down this year by either Dwyer or Nesbitt, In reality though any rushing record could potentially go, particularly against some of the lesser ACC teams that have offense. To discuss Tech football further go to: http://www.bbuzzoff.com

I’ve gotta say, as much as I hate UGA, our blogs would be pretty boring without their comments. I did laugh when I read the CPJ sweatsuit remark! That really was funny, and, of course, has no bearing on the fact that he, in his first season, beat their stylish coach. I also love the fact that UGA fans always revert to calling us nerds in one way or another (e.g., “try talking to a female,” which he types from his own computer). FYI, my hot wife is as rabid a Tech fan as I am. It’s so pathetic that even the middle-aged UGA fans walk around at the game calling Tech fans nerds. Seriously, do they really think it bothers Tech fans to be called nerds?!? It might have bothered us in middle school, before we fully realized that doing better at math than other kids was a good thing, but we grew out of adolescence.

Actually…. I would bet that we don’t break most of the records mentioned. Thats the beauty of this offense. There isn’t one person featured. It is so spread around that the total offense numbers look great but no one back has great games every week. We may see JD only go for 1200 this year, but we could have 3 – 1000 yard backs and a 1500 yd passer.

Toyko has is right… break the record for the most wins and everything else will fall into place. GO JACKETS!!!!! Only 9 MORE DAYS!!!!!!

I would like to see Josh break the total offense record (I think it is held by Joe), if not the season, at least in a few games. I think Reggie and Donnie D. are the two who have rushed and passed for more than 100 yds in a game. I’m sure someone will correct me if I am wrong!

A couple of those were broken last year.

Single Game Rushing Record by QB – Already mentioned but Nesbitt already did it. 151 yds v. VPI.

Yards per carry – season. We averaged 5.6 YPC last year. The record is 5.3.

I also don’t think we can touch the first down record because of the propensity to break long runs. There were only 3-4 games last year where GT even had 20 first downs total. Mostly it was 12-15 a game, including penalties and passing (which were negligible, but still). Maybe we can break the season record but single game is very unlikely.

The single game Rushing record for the NCAA is like 407 by someone from Texas Tech or other Texas school. Set back in the 1990’s.

Ivery still holds the school record.

But be honest folks…the way the Tech folks distribute the football to many runners – No way anyone gets that record. I could certainly see Nesbitt getting both the single game and season rushing record if he remains healthy. His health will determine Yech’s success.

I think Tech could rush for 18,000 yards, pass for another 10,000 or so and average 222 points per game, in honor of the landmark win over Cumberland all those years ago. Our offense and players are capable of breaking all of our rushing records with this offense. The only reason we may not break individual records is because we have so many good running backs we will probably rotate many players, which will reduce the number of carries. Dwyer certainly could be the best running back we have ever had before he graduates or goes pro. He has the combination of power, size, and speed that not many are lucky to have. He certainly should be the best running back in the country this year. We have at least 3 and maybe 5 or 6 better running backs than anyone on UGA’s team. I can’t wait for November. Many records could be broken during that Game in Atlanta by the Jackets.

Eventhough we’re looking forward to this season let’s don’t forget there were several close games last year which is a tribute to CPJ and staff that we pulled most of those out. Some games we won that were close less than 10 points or something to that effect and vice versa we lost a couple within a relative close call including VT. I’m looking foward to our passing effectiveness this year and to see how good our defense will be. But even in 1975, I don’t think we had the overall depth and talent at the depth like we do now in the RB and even QB position. An improvement in the return position is also going to be fun watch.

Jacketnation: I’ll try to respond to your concerns about the smaller size of our o-line.

CPJ actually doesn’t mind this at all; he has never had a large o-line. At Navy, it was even smaller than what we are going to have, and G-Southern was similar in size to Navy. I am like you; I wish we had bigger guys, but what CPJ wants for his offense are guys that can move, cut block, and continue to cut block downfield, which larger guys cannot do most of the time. Yes, there are some very large guys that can move very well, and I believe CPJ would like to get some of these, and he will over time, but right now that is not what he has. As an example, right now Bedford is ahead of Voss at center, and Voss is much bigger, but Bedford must have better technique and must have the ability to block at the 2nd and 3rd levels of the defense.

I hear what your saying about smaller O linemen being able to move and get downfield, but if what you’re reporting is correct, then we only have one O lineman over 285 lbs (Cord Howard). On top of that, we average around 280 per man including the 310 lb Howard. Was I the only guy who saw our smaller Offensive Tackles getting blasted 6 yards into the backfield by LSU’s 300 lb D linemen last year? That tends to ruin your option play in a hurry. I’m more concerned with our Offensive Line winding up in our backfield than with them getting down field for cut blocks. CPJ better get Claytor and Uzzi on the field or we’re in trouble on the O Line. Our offensive backfield could have three 230 backs at the same time if Cox is in at A back with Allen and Dwyer. They’re going to break plenty of tackles downfield as long as they get past the line of scrimmage. And by the way, Navy and Ga Southern weren’t playing against ACC and SEC defensive lineman week in and week out so don’t even try to use that as a comparison. Just a thought!

I love it when I see this from redneck, inbred UGA fans. It means we are winning

Too bad for you that loving feeling only comes once a decade. And in your right hand.

I think Dwyer could set the single season rushing record with the extra (ACC championship) game this year, but its going to be tough if he has to rack up the yards against that Florida defense in the National Championship Game to break the record.

All of these records will be shattered this year…BEFORE we we win teh ACC-CG and (probably) the Orange Bowl.

We know the Offense is gonna be scoring machine, but its the Defense thats gonna be the REAL shocker. GT is gonna be WAAAAAYYYY better on D than most are expecting. And, PRs & KOs is gonna be awesome.

I look for records to be shattered in the areas of:

1. INTs
2. PRs for TDs
3. KOs for TDs

Pensacola Dawg: Obviously, with the way you spell, you had to settle for UGA for a school. Jepordy? WTF is that? It’s Jeopardy. Got it……………lame lame lame azz school is UGAG!

You chose UGAG over GT cause if you cannto spell Jeopardy, your hurtin fer certin. In Athens, I bet half the students can’t spell Jeopardy either. Jepordy. Yeah, that’s it. Your crappy team is in Jepordy of losing 5-6 games and GT romping your azzes into the ground. Your sorry azz team is in Jepordy of losing to OSU as well and will. Bank on it! You are one illiterate UGA fan. THWG!

M, if you think Chan Gailey was the worst coach ever, then you must be too young to remember Bill Lewis and Bill Curry. Both of them had one-win seasons. One got fired because of it. Unfortunately the other didn’t. He went on to have another one-win season and STILL kept his job.

[...] – UGA is in denial about last year’s game. Their media guide has the score of the match-up listed at a 42-42 tie. – Tech may have one of the most dangerous offenses in the league, but they need to hold on to the ball better this season. – Roddy Jones had his cast removed and will participate in full contact today, but don’t expect him to be back in time for the opener. – WR Tyler Melton has a sprain of the medial collateral ligament. That’s in knee fyi… Melton looks to be out 4-5 weeks, a huge loss for the passing game. – Apparently the kicking game is getting on track to where it needs to be… Don’t tell me, show me. – Quentin Sims has been moved from WR to QB for now due to the recent string of injuries. Injuries to Jaybo Shaw and Jordan Luallen have both been out, leaving the QB position much thinner than it was at the start of camp. – DE Izaan Cross will be the only freshman to play regularly on the defensive line. That’s kind of a surprise considering all the hype surrounding T.J. Barnes. – GT is ranked 15th in the AP poll, its highest ranking since 2001. – 26,200 season tickets have been sold compared to last year’s 23,900. – The AJC’s Doug Roberson believes the Yellow Jackets could rewrite the record book this season.
