You say it’s your …

birthday.

Ok, well you didn’t say that. But I did.

For those who didn’t know, and sure most of yall did, coach Paul Johnson turned 52 on Thursday.

So, before we get to other stuff, I wanted to ask yall about cool gifts related to your favorite team. What’s the coolest Georgia Tech-related gift you’ve ever received or given, and why?

——————-

And, on to other stuff. In the practice report you may have read that Demaryius Thomas missed practice with a couple of injured digits. I wouldn’t sweat it. He’s been playing with since injuring it at the start of August. He’s just being held out as a precaution.

In other news, Kyle Jackson got to do some conditioning drills with the team today. I believe it was his first day getting to participate.

————-

Somebody asked for an update about Roddy Jones in the previous blog. Johnson said today that Jones’ cast will be coming off Monday.

————-

Someone also asked for an update on J.C. Lanier. He missed at least one practice earlier this week. To be honest, I didn’t get a chance to see if he was back today.

————-

Also in the practice report I wrote about the possibility of Tech having two 1,000-yard rushers this season. Jonathan Dwyer raised the possibility of three, but that’s more the power of positive thinking, I think. But who knows?

Anyway, I wanted to get yall’s take on the possibility that Tech could have two 1k dudes this year. Nesbitt and Jones each came within 10 yards of 700 last season. Who’s to say another year in the offense couldn’t produce another 1k rusher?

I know it is off topic… Why did teachers work at school on furlough days but college coaches are not allowed to come on campus on theirs. Since you aren’t allowed in practice right now, do some digging on this topic Doug. Thanks.

Just FYI, at least 80% of teachers worked on the furlough days… At the open schools. I guess coaches are just going to not show up for a few days at work during the season? That won’t happen.

Years ago I made a walking cane that was painted and covered with all of Joe Hamilton’s wins. I delivered it to the coaches office a few days before Joe went to New York. I played Eddie lee Ivory and Don Bessillieu i a game of horse at Pepper Rogers football camp. I think I won, but they may have thrown the game. I was given Don’s game jersey for the 78 Peach Bowl. Tech lost to Purdur, but I wear that jersey on throw-back games. Don did play for the Fins for a few years too.

Doug, years ago I received (and I still have) a marble paper weight with a swatch of the artificial turf that had been taken up and replaced at Grant Field. What I’d like to find is one of the photos that they sold with ads in GT publications after the 1991 Citrus Bowl – the one that was a shot of the endzone with scoreboard showing the GT 45 – Nebraska 21 score and the Tech fans in that section which included our seats. Anybody know of a source?

Dwyer will get anywhere between 1,000 and 1,300 yards… I dont think his numbers will improve that much because of the increased passing game and addition of Anthony Allen. I think if we were to have another 1,000 yard rusher it would be Roddy Jones or Anthony Allen. Nesbitt will run for 700-900. Marcus Wright 400-500. Embry 300-400. I could see Anthony Allen and Roddy Jones running for 1,000+ for one of them and 800 or so for the other.

Dwyer definitely. Given that there are 12 regular season games, hopefully an ACC championship game and a bowl game, I think that either Roddy or Allen should be able to join Dwyer above the 1000yd mark. Towards the end of the season Nesbitt was pitching the ball to A-backs more than he was running it himself. I expect that trend will contune….

With the stable of running backs on the roster who will be rotating in and out, together as a team, the numbers should be around 4,000 yards for the season in year # 2. How it is broken down between the individuals players is of no consequence. The passing game needs to be between 140 to 160 yards per game. With those numbers, and the returning defense, that will put Tech into the ACC Championship game.

The U.S. News & World Report college ratings are out today, and Georgia schools retained their rankings from last year for the most part.

I think the rankings influence where students go to college. (I also think many students are influenced by the “Colleges that Change Lives” franchise.)

Many people dismiss college status as a factor, but there’s evidence that where you go to school impacts how much you earn.

PayScale Inc., which compiles compensation data, says the median starting salary for Ivy League graduates is about 30 percent higher than that of liberal-arts college graduates. However, the study doesn’t address whether that pay differential is the result of a better education, or simply because the Ivies attract higher-achieving students in the first place. (I would also ask whether the Ivies attract better connected kids; it’s easier to end up at Goldman Sachs if your mother worked there.)

In its 2009 report, PayScale says the median starting salary for a University of Georgia graduate was $43,900, compared to $60,00 for a Harvard grad, $58,900 for a Georgia Tech grad, and $50,600 for an Emory grad.

I am sorry to report that PayScale also lists degrees that pay you back and teaching and journalism offer some of the lowest returns. The big money is in the STEM fields; science, technology, engineering and math.

Teachers should not be allowed on campus on furlough days because I can just see the coming legal action to require that we pay them for that time. Teachers already get a 12 month pay check for working only 9 months, plus they get two weeks off at Christmas, a week each for Fall and Spring break, and all the other little holidays like Thanksgiving. If they want to compare their pay with what TAXPAYERS make in 12 months, then they should work 12 months, and not fewer than 9.

Three may be stretching, but it’s not entirely impossible, I guess.

I agree with a previous poster who alluded to the 4,000 yard mark as a target for this year (I believe you guys were closer to 3,300 or so last year, but not sure and I am too lazy to look it up right now).

If everyone stays healthy, I think it’s likely that Nesbitt and Dwyer each have 1,000 + yard seasons, with likely Roddy Jones and Anthony Allen with the bulk of the rest.

The 3,000 yard number passing for Nesbitt is extremely aggressive. I would expect a more reasonable breakdown to be 2,000 yards passing and 1,000 rushing from him.

Regarding Jackson, that would seem to be huge loss for your group of linebackers if he can’t go.

How is your depth at LB? Does the scheme, with the Wolf position, make this less of a big deal than it would ordinarily be if you ran a more traditional 4-3?

Bankerdawg-

We still have pretty good depth at LB, but the loss of Kyle Jackson does hurt tremendously because he was a backup that had the skills of a starter. The wolf position is just designed to create havoc and to be able to adapt to different defenses without changing the scheme. The 4-2-4-wolf, i guess you could call it lol, can lign the wolf up at LB against a traditional offense or lign him up as a 3rd safety against a spread offense. Cooper Taylor will start at wolf and will be backed by Mario Edwards. The two deep is pretty solid at that position. The third wolf would have been Anthony Barnes, a converted true linebacker. He was on track to start last year as a LB but got injured for the majority of the season. Now he is healthy, so I would imagine with the quality depth at wolf and the loss of Kyle Jackson, the coaching staff will move barnes back to the LB rotation. Jackson wont be out for the entire season, tthough. Hes already back at practice. We also have Steven Sylvester and Malcum Monroe, both of whom are very athletic LB that were solid recruits out of HS, they just lack experience. But I think they will do just fine as backups because they are talented, we just havent seen them yet.

BTW, regarding Kyle Jackson, i mentioned he was back at practice, but hes not in playing capability yet. He had surgury and is wearing a prrotectice boot and ran through some conditioning drills but isnt allowed for contact yet. So i would imagine he would be out for Jax State just to have him heal up even more, but im not sure of how long into the season he will be out. If he is already out there, I would think that we will see him very soon, of course it may take him atleast a game to get back into it.

BankerDawg is an obvious football fan that offers realistic numbers for GT.

No way Tech produces two 1,000 yard rushers and also has a QB with over 3,000 yards. Johnson stated about a month ago in some article for the AJC that he would be happy with 100 yards passing per game. That would equate to 1,300 with Bowl game included. Even a doubling of the coach’s number does not reach the 3,000 yard plateau. Much more likely to have three 1,000 yard rushers in his offense than to have a QB with 3,000.

Jackson

August 21st, 2009
10:40 am

Not a huge loss. Sedric Griffin is a lock to start and Brad Jefferson would probably start at the other LB position regardless of Kyle Jackson’s health. It hurts our depth, but not our starting 11. We also have a couple other solid guys we can slot in like Anthony Barnes (who has about two years of significant experience) or Steven Sylvester, a true sophomore who saw some meaningful game time last year (played in every game except Jacksonville St.).

Even playing a 4-3 we’d be able to start Barnes, Griffin, and Jefferson. Luckily, LB is probably the deepest aspect of the team besides RB.

Whoever said 3k passing is incorrect. A goal was set for Nesbitt to hit 1k rushing and 2k passing. Looking at each player individually:
Dwyer is a predicted 1k repeat for obvious reasons.
Jones was a RF last year in a brand new system and racked up just shy of 700.
Allen is a beast who racked up 700 in his second year at UL.
Nesbitt had a young offensive line in a brand new system and racked up just shy of 700.

All sound like possibilities, but is it likely to have 4? NO! But 2 is very reasonable. Especially if Nesbitt doesn’t miss 3 games like he did last year.

JACKETfan, thanks for the info regarding the defense. Sounds like the athleticism is there, and now you’re to the point of needing them to act on instinct versus thinking through the process of where they need to be on a given play. Luckily, the latter can be taught, but the former cannot.

Is Barnes the LB that broke his leg in our game last year?

Yeah Short Dog, I mean you. Your argument is terrible. Nothing less than I would expect from a 12 year old puppy fan.

“Georgia had 407 yards passing and 124 yards rushing on teck. That’s 531 yards of offense on a team that had three players go to the NFL. They are gone. UGA can’t wait till November.”

As an initial matter, you only had 81 yards rushing. 94 by No-Show, 1 by your starting RB this year, and -14 by Tubbs McGee.

Second, are you talking about our front four that placed one guy in the third round and two in the seventh?

Surely you recognize that your ENTIRE offense, minus AJ Green and Shaun Chapas, graduated last year, INCLUDING three nfl picks from your offense that were higher than any pick from Tech.

1) Stafford (407 yards passing)
2) Moreno (94 yds rushing, 74 yards receiving, 1 TD)
3) Massaquoi (180 yds receiving, 3 TDs)

In fact, all you have returning from that game is one, lonely rushing yard and 90 receiving yards. So yeah, your three NFL players did well against our three NFL players. But they ALL are gone. Who cares if that one rushing yard can’t wait until November?

OH, and – just like Tech – uga placed three defensive players in the NFL (2 in round 3, 1 in round 6). However, contrasting uga’s situation, Tech returns every single skill player on offense. That includes Dwyer (144 yards rushing) and Jones (214 yards rushing).

THEY can’t wait until November. Joe Cox and whomever you guys will start at RB? They had no bearing on the game last year so it doesn’t matter.

I am leaving your site right now, but before you call out any of our fans get the idiots off of ours. I also think any Dawg fans should leave now because we have our own site.Let the classy Tech fans that are on here enjoy their own site. Good luck this year in all games but one!

DOGTARDS, you are dummer than stinger. First you got the rushing yardage wrong. Second, it doesn’t change the fact that our offense had more yardage on tevh than tech had on us so who has the lousy defense. You got a gift of a pick 6 and a fumble on the 23. Without either of those it is 8 in a row. Third the rest of your point is pointless. We have the best offensive line we’ve probably ever had coming back and the best wide receiver we ever had and two 5 star tailback recruits and a slew of 4 star runing backs and receivers ready to step up. We’ll have plenty of offense especially considering how weak tecks defense is going to be. You will have lost at leat 3 by November.

Stinger you are a waste of skin. Stay close to your hole.

Smitty there could be some validity in the CPJ to Notre Dame. I have heard his name mentioned on several sports shows in that regard including ESPN. Also history is not on Tech’s side here. Good coaches leave Tech. Bad ones get fired. Count the number of GT coaches since 1965 and it is perfectly clear that Tech is only used as a stepping stone for the good ones and is a career killer for the bad ones. History don’t lie folks.

Guys, take a deep breath. Stop hyperventilating. Johnson ain’t going to ND if and when they fire Weis, for the simple reason that Notre Dame, which sees itself — yeah, I know they’re full of it — as the cathedral of college football, will never adopt the under-the-center spread option. It just doesn’t look sophisticated enough for them. Never mind that it is far more sophisticated than the shotgun spread. It just doesn’t look right. It takes a leap of faith, or an act of desperation, for a major college team to adopt it. I don’t know which describes Georgia Tech. That is not a criticism of Johnson’s offense, which is really fun to watch. It is the reality of it. Major colleges today still subscribe to the line up and chunk it deep philosophy, in the belief that gets them on TV with all those dollars.

My firdt TECH away game was in the mid 1950s when in the third grade. We had moved from Atlanta to Greensboro, NC and my Dad took me to Durham to see my beloved Yellow Jackets play a fine Duke team led by Sonny Jurgenson. I had lost the original game program years ago. For a recent birthday, my wife located one on EBAY for me.

Hey Short Pup

Where are you getting your stats from? Making them up. ESPN and the ajc both agree with me.

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/boxscore?gameId=283340061

That’s called a fact citation. Where does it say 124 yards rushing?

The rest of your argument isn’t even worth addressing, since you can’t even get basic facts right. I really hope for uga’s sake you didn’t go there, although I sincerely doubt you are smart enough to even sniff college (and no, sneaking out of your parents house to go to Georgia Perimeter parties doesn’t count).

LONG DAWG

DOGTARD, I got my stats from a different source so there is a difference. They both say 407 yards passing. Even if we go with your number it still adds up to 488 yards of total offense… more than tech had. Without the turnovers it is 8 in a row. We had that much offense with 2 starters out on the offensive line and a pure freshman starting at center.

Second point, we will have more than enough offense and defense for tech. If you guys haven’t lost 3 by Nov it will be a miracle. If Nesbitt gets hurt it will be 5 losses.

Third point, I did graduate from UGA probably before you were born. I have people your age working for me. They are just smarter and have better taste.

The bottom line is we beat you 45-42 and have 19 starters returning including every one of them on offense. Yeah right, you can’t wait for November. What a joke, but the biggest joke is that you own your own company. I have about 100 people working for me and 3 of them are bulldawg fans. They empty the trash cans. This is a fact: If the Rev Ricky can win the big ones (Fla, GT, Oak St) he will be out. At UGA now days 9 or 10 wins with losses in the big games will not cut it.

The only real football coach that would leave a wining BCS team for ND is one who is looking for the Mega Bucks and a quick trip to retirement. That may be Rickt but is not CPJ.
