Day 11 in the books

Well, it was yet another hot one.

The good news: A few injured players returned: quarterback Jaybo Shaw and offensive lineman Brad Sellers.

The rest of those on the beach this week were still on the beach.

The team started a couple of new drills: including one for kickoff returns, and one for the hurry-up offense.

The first two segments of the last drill seemed to go well, with the defense making a good play and the offense making a long drive that finished with the defense making a good play.

But, in the end, coach Johnson wasn’t at all happy with the consistency of the effort, repeating a theme from throughout the week.

It’s always interesting talking to Johnson after practices. He’s an honest man, which is appreciated (I would think) by all. And you can see why he’s had so much success. He’s driven and doesn’t settle. Today he remarked that the players walk around like they’ve already won something, when in their last game they were beaten soundly by LSU. It’s all about the last game.

Josh Nesbitt made some good throws today, as did Tevin Washington. Both seemed particularly good with long throws, something that the coaches and players want to see more of this year.

Rod Sweeting has made some solid plays during the past few days, as has Jerrard Tarrant. The competition at defensive back is going to be very interesting over the next three weeks.

That’s it for now.

To my friends god and greyhound, stinger, yellow fuzz, trade school junkie, saint simons et. al….

Can you say CPJ = Chan Gailey? 2009 yellow jackets… great running back, no offensive line, no defensive line = 4 legitimate losses plus 1 loss to a team tech should have beaten. You guys forget, this is Georgia Tech. It doesn’t matter who the coach is.

You all will be out of the stadium before the third quarter is finished when you get your UGA payback in NOV. Cheer up… you’ll get lucky again in the next 7 or 8 years.

Thanks for the updates Doug. I do have one request. Can you give us better detail on how the passing thing is coming along? The phrase “made some good throws” sounds good, but it could also mean that you are just trying to find something positive to say. I could go out there and throw all day and “make some good throws”, but overall I’d be awful. I want to know what to expect next month, instead of being surprised if a QB is missing wide-open passes against Jacksonville State.

Dude, Reality Check, seriously…. you might be the dumbest commenter in the history of AJC Blogs. Comparing Paul Johnson to Chan Gailey is like comparing Vince Dooley to Jim Donnan…. CPJ has been successful everywhere he’s been, Chan was not even close to being as successful. Everyone last year pegged us to win no more than like 4 or 5 games, and even with a below-average, no depth O-line, a young, shaky secondary, and thin LB corps, we STILL won 9 games, including beating UGay’s butt. We lost no one of concern really this past offense, our O-line is deeper and more experienced, and the offense as a whole is now comfortable with the playbook.

Your team lost 2 1st round draft picks, to include your starting QB and RB, and valuable players on your defense. And you think somehow you have a prayer’s chance in winning more than 8 games this year?? You are a typical, ignorant, delusional UGA fan that continues to give your fanbase a bad name. I GUARANTEE that Tech will beat UGA by at LEAST 2 TD’s.

Your team hasn’t won a NC in coming up on 30 years. 30 YEARS!!! You consistently bring in top-tier talent in recruiting, which I give you props for, but ya’ll ALWAYS squander it. The only thing you can manage to win was a SEC title recently. You were ranked #1 last year, had all the talent to get to the NC, and your team CHOKED. Please… My favorite part about beating you guys last year was that Willy Martinez prepared for our offense by treating it like the wishbone. How’d that work out for ya? Get used to being OWNED in the rivalry with Tech for as long as CPJ is here. His record against rivalries speaks for itself. Peace…

Brewer, I was there yesterday for 7on7s and 11on11s. Josh and Tevin made mostly good throws, with only a few that were off target. A few should’ve been caught by receivers. I’d guess somewhere around 60% completions. Dwyer had a nice one, so did Peeples, Allen, Hill caught several, Thomas one, Cone one, Orwin one, Wright. The drops were by Orwin, MacCahan(sp?), Peeples, Drummond. On some of the incompletes, it was because of the defense breaking up passes. Jemea had one, Reid and Burnett of course. Nothing but passing plays for the 90mins I was there. Nesbitt has a rocket arm and needs to ease up on those 5 yard screens. Tevin puts a little too much arch on his deep passes, Nesbitt a little too much laser. Hill has the hands of Calvin, but not nearly the strength when fighting for space on the jump balls. Good thing he can jump through the roof!!

I hear ya Brewer….

I’m one of the goofy ones that pays for my information so I don’t have to sift through much of that, but I understand what you’re saying. I would affirm what GT Rich said, and the individual performances he mentioned from Thursday have been similar throughout camp. Consistency is becoming key and we’re starting to see who is and who ain’t. I have been at practice 3 times, and there have been some great and some not so great. Too many drops to this point, many because of strong defensive pressure. Needless to say, our secondary is STOUT. I would say when Nesbitt has time to throw, he rarely misses his target. The majority of his incompletions that I have seen have been the fault of the receivers or the good pressure by the D. There is a drop off between he and the rest of the QB’s. For every AJC report that Tevin is making “good throws”, he also has his share of poor throws that are off target due to an odd throwing motion and poor mechanics. Simply put, he is less consistent and balanced. I would say he’s improved however. The WR’s all look pretty good, but the A-backs really need to step it up with their hands and their routes in order to make our passing game really effective. I saw Coach Bohannon verbally testing some of the WRs and Abacks about their options on different plays the other day. Some still don’t seem to be clear about all that they’re supposed to do in the passing game. Hopefully we hear of those players starting to make solid progress in the next 3 weeks as practices are closed to the public and the coaches really start to plan for Jax St. I would say that some new plays in the passing game will help us a lot. I am not going to speak of them in detail here, but some new wrinkles in the playbook will be fun to watch this fall. Hope all that info is helpful. You can thank me later, Doug.

I see we have the usual line up this morning…delusional tech fans that want to talk about everything except what is obvious to even the casual observer… CPJ =Chan Gailey; one win in 8 years over Ga = Tech is now great (commemorative ring LOL); spankings by VT, NC, Virginia and humiliation by a 5 loss SEC team in a nationally televised bowl game = Tech is still Tech. This year will be worse not better( 5 losses). You have no OL and no DL and you can’t win in any league without winning in the trenches.

Reality Check has a very short memory. He forgets that the Dawgs were rated # 1 preseason last year with all the 4 and 5 star players and yet got their AZZ kicked by Tech, not to mention Alabama and the annual thrashing by Florida. They usually find a way to lose to either Vandy or Kentucky or both every year. Coach Paul Johnson can win with Chan’s players. Just think what he will do with his own players. As some of you have mentioned Paul Johnson has won every place he has been. He has never had the talent anywhere close to what he has at Tech. Make no mistake, he will win a National Championship at Tech and it won’t take him 30 or 40 years to do it like it has taken UGA and they still can’t win one. Paul Johnson coaches up this 2 and 3 star players. Mark Richt coaches down his 4 and 5 star players. You may start as a 5 star player at UGA, but you will end up as a 1 or 2 star and collecting garbage at the end of your career.

the Forbes rankings were based on how much the students “liked” their college/university then that STILL casts a bad light on GT.

Do you really think the West Point Cadets LIKED that environment? You need to put down whatever it is you are smokin’, drinkin’, or that calculator and realize that one of the most respected business periodicals in the U.S. did not base the rankings on student likes and dislikes – rather, as they reported, the reason place like West Point was number one was the quality of the teaching (based on the fact that the professors at West Point are not concerned with “publishing or perishing” research as most university professors. They spend their time TEACHING, and that is why West Point ranked so high – you did notice that Harvard and Yale and Princeton still ranked highly.

Just face it, while both UGA and GT are good schools, and yes, Tech is better academically, at least from a historical perspective, there is not that much difference now – they just have different curriculums in which to excel. And, UGA has (or had, since he killed himself) a murdering professor, while Tech has a scum bag pervert still on the payroll, so the creepiness is a wash when it comes to faculty comparisons!

Guys like NERDBOT, DUH-WYER, and BEE BEE thomas are guys PEE JAY would NEVER be able to recruit into this system. PEE JAY’s guys are 1-AA rejects like J-BOW, Quentin Sims(chose tech over BUFFALO), and your new backup to Dwyer PRESTON LYONS, who is a walk-on transfer from COLGATE(LMFAO). Don’t forget about the great ROBERT GODHIGH, another walk-on who looks to get playing time on this talent depleted roster. He wasn’t even offered by 1-AA schools!!!

Next season when DUHWYER, BEE BEE, BURNETT, AND MORGAN are off early to the NFL, the true talent level of this roster will become apparent. Can’t you NERDS see? PEE JAY is DECIMATING the talent level of your team! Three years from now when you are 1-7 in the ACC and PEE JAY is out the door, Tech may well contemplate dropping to 1-AA, as it will take YEARS to bring the talent level back up to par with even the worst BCS schools.

PEE JAY is like RALPH FRIEDGEN on RADIOACTIVE TWINKIES. He will win a few games with Gailey’s players, then once that meager talent filters out Tech will be the DOORMAT of the ACC, getting the tar beat out of them by DUKE!!

As much as PJ is reminding the team about the LSU loss, I can’t help but wonder if he deliberately set them up for a lopsided loss. He could’ve quit calling passing plays and went back to the bread and butter option plays if he really wanted to be competitive in that game. GT Rich- I don’t think PJ ever wants to lose. He can use the game as a positive in the future, but it would have certainly been better to win. If you listened to his interviews after the game, the fake punt wasn’t actually supposed to happen. They were supposed to audible out of it to a regular punt if the defense wasn’t aligned properly (which they weren’t), but the guys didn’t audible out.

He took the blame on it saying lesson learned that of course the guys would want to try it and not play conservatively. But it wasn’t him “giving up” and trying to not be competitive.

College Football news rated the bee offense #23 and the defense #29. The reason they rated so low was because the OL was rated 33 and the DL was rated 38. Check- if GT loses 5 games they won’t be in anyone’s top 25, but since pretty much everyone has them top 20, I’d say most people disagree with you.

My reasoning for why you’re points are invalid is easy- last year GT had a completely new OLine and won 9 games. I say they were completely new because the blocking schemes in PJ’s offense are 180 degrees different than Chan’s and everyone, starter or not, was at square 1. Sure, some guys had more “game speed” experience, but that didn’t help them on the OLine as much as it would in a new scheme on the defensive side of the ball. And GT’s OLine has the same starters back from the end of the year that beat UGAy in athens. And they’re now in year 2. Only major starter lost was Gardner, and he was out the last few games anyway. The rest of the boys are back and will be improved- they have no way to go but up.

That isn’t saying GT’s OLine is good, but that’s not the point. They’ll be better than they were last year, so your point is therefore invalid. The entire rest of the offense returns.

On defense, there probably will be a dropoff on the DLine, but basically the entire secondary returns whereas last year it was entirely freshman and sophmores in a brand new scheme. Again, the defense as a whole should actually improve even though the line takes a step back.

9-4 plus improved Offense (10 returning starters) and improved Defense (7 returning starters) 5 losses big guy.

Stinger, you are great at making my point.I asked a simple question and you can’t answer it. You can’t even talk about the strengths and weaknesses of your own team. All you can do is talk about UGA. I believe that disorder is called OCD. Now please try to stay on the subject and tell me why Tech won’t lose 5 games. I realize the question is over your head but give it a try.

3rd quarter fan…. Yes but he never coached at tech. What is classic about tech football is the uncanny ability to be inconsistent in their focus and effort (see Gardner Webb and Virginia 2008). That is classic tech. After last year’s spring game no one took them seriously and they snuck up on some folks. That won’t happen this year. Plus ther is essentially no depth on the offensive and defensive lines. It is back to earth for tech is 09.

Reality Check,

You need to do your homework. We have the all offensive lineman back that started against UGAG and ran for over 450 yards. There are (2) lineman that started that game that might lose their starting positions. We have plenty of depth on the OL. You can keep quoting College Football News if you want to, but GT’s OL will make you both look stupid after this year is done. Most of of DL might be new starters this year, but they got plenty of reps last year. You throw in a couple of DL that weigh more than 300lbs, same starting LB’s and probably the best secondary in the ACC and the defense will be just fine.

Your fear of what Paul Johnson is doing at GT shows everytime you make a comment. THWG!!!!!

Reality Check, Why don’t you go read a book, See Spot run, See Sally play, See Dick whatever. You are the most retarded UGAY fan on earth. All you do is talk about Tech, you don’t know anything about your own team. Let me remind you something about your team. YOU LOST to us 45-42. I don’t need to explain to you why we won’t lose 5 games this year. Anyone other than a Moron would realize that. I know more about Tech football than you will ever know in your lifetime about UGA football. We are deeper at every position this year. We played a lot of players last year and don’t think for one minute that our offensive or defensive lines will be weaker than last year. We have 2 monsters at defensive tackle and our defensive ends are just as good as they were last year. Considering that MJ was the best in the nation last year, that says a lot. I can’t wait for our defensive line to get a hold of your 5′7″ 150 lb starting tailback. I really hope Samuel is your starter since he fumbles almost every time he touches the ball. Another Jasper Sanks on your hands Ha, Ha, Ha.

That is why you need me. I am Reality Check.

Fellow Fans,

Just wanted to issue all of you a hello and introduce myself as a first-time ajc.com blogger. I have only been coming to this web site for about a month now, but I would like to send out thanks to all who contribute to putting it all together. Would also like to thank one Mr. Roberson for showing a great deal of dedication and passion to his work and interest. That is appreciated. But special thanks to the fans that display an awesome passion for sports in and around the Metro Atlanta area that enable the sports blog world to exist right here on our beloved FREE online Atlanta Newspaper Webpage.

As I’m sure all who read this will surely say about themselves, I am too a big football fan. I am a regular guy, but hopefully not a typical one. The reason for that being said is because I intend to spend this football season posting about once or twice a week (depending on responses) on here in an objective manor (or at least I will try my best). I’m not a big numbers guy, so you can expect a lot of my blog posts to be relating to what I observe, feel, and think. I try to stay away from too many statistics, but I understand their importance.

Now, I read earlier in the week where some of you were making predictions on the upcoming 2009 Georgia Tech football schedule. On first thought, it seemed too soon to pick results in august for individual games for the whole season. But on second thought, it brought a challenge and I couldn’t help but make my own attempt. So I gave it some thought, and here it is:

September 5, 2009
Jacksonville State @ Georgia Tech.
I don’t see a whole lot of change from last year’s game match-up wise; clear mismatch. Tech comes into the opener with a deeper and more experienced offense. Should equate to more points. JSU will have a hard time stopping the running attack, which will lead to Coach Johnson opening up his offense and showing off his toy for the Tech faithful. Last year, JSU scored late. Same story this year. I’m calling for an exciting opening affair on the Flats with the Yellow Jackets scoring early and often, capped off by a couple of 4th quarter scoring drives by JSU on Tech’s defensive subs. FINAL SCORE: Tech 51 JSU 17

September 10, Thursday
Clemson @ Georgia Tech.
Ahh yes. Dwyer vs. Spiller under the Thursday night lights of Bobby Dodd Stadium. Place will be loud and electric (white out), with both defenses focused on stopping the run, much like last year’s game. I don’t think either star running back is the story here. Tech will stretch the field, and connect on a few big plays down the field to 5 and 8. Close game at half, but I’ll take Tech with the game in hand halfway through the 4th. Nesbitt breakout game. Burnett and gang with a couple of turnovers due to forced passes. FINAL SCORE: Ga Tech 34 Clemson 20

September 17, Thursday
Georgia Tech @ Miami.
Interesting game here. Could possibly be a trap game, but more likely just a scare. I expect Georgia Tech to have a slow start in this game with a couple of mistakes early as the Miami defenders break through and bust a few option plays. The 2nd half is where the Miami defense will get lazy with their assignments and the Jackets use their fresh legs and depth out of the backfield mixed with a few blocking adjustments to take the lead back for good and chew clock with long drives late. Great showing for the running backs. Look for the Tech defensive line to make a statement in this one as well. FINAL SCORE: Ga Tech 31 Miami 23

September 26, Saturday
North Carolina @ Georgia Tech.
Expect to see an all around great effort from the Jackets here. Coming off a couple of big Thursday wins, got a few extra days to rest up. This game will end up being a lot like Last Year’s Miami game, where Tech will be hitting on all cylinders. Combine that with a North Carolina let down and you have yourself an ABC broadcast blowout, and a turnover margin in favor of the Yellow Jackets by 4 or more. Tech has now arrived in the top 8 spotlight, and now has the college football world buzzing about Paul Johnson and his Offense. No one saw this coming. FINAL SCORE: Ga Tech 35 UNC 13

October 3
Georgia Tech @ Mississippi State.
The former laughingstock of the SEC hosts one of the hottest teams in the country. However, MSU comes into the game with a little momentum and confidence of it’s own. Tech’s defense loses focus in this game, and gives up a few big plays. But the bulldog defense is no match for the much improved option from last year. Dwyer a breakout game. FINAL SCORE: Ga Tech 38 MSU 17

October 10
Georgia Tech @ Florida State.
5-0 Ga Tech heads into FSU riding high with a dominating start to the season. Florida State is notorious for making plays late in the game. Florida State has put together a strong start of their own, and ESPN Game Day is there to tell us about both. I see this one being close till’ the end, as each offense will exchange blows for much of the game. Special teams will prove crucial in this one. Herby takes the Jackets and Corso, naturally, takes his Seminoles. Still bitter from last year’s game, FSU ad Bobby Bowden won’t be denied. Blair’s long game winning field goal in regulation sails just wide, and the Seminoles jump up and bite the Yellow Jackets in an overtime thriller. FINAL SCORE: FSU 34 Ga Tech 28 OT

October 17
Virginia Tech @ Georgia Tech.
Big time game. Most expect a close one. Winner here likely wins the sub-conference and goes on to the ACC Champ game. Much like most of Ga Tech’s games so far, this one also filled with tons of hype. Jackets bounce back, surprise, and jump on the Hokies early and force them into comeback mode early. Roddy Jones Breakout Game. VT can’t catch up, as the strong yellow jacket defensive secondary takes away the pass, and Tyrod Taylor is forced to make plays on the ground getting knocked around. Big win for the Jackets as they remain in the BCS picture. FINAL SCORE: Ga Tech 30 Va Tech 17

October 24
Georgia Tech @ Virginia.
Virginia seems to give The Jackets fits lately. Virginia comes in with a record around .500 ready to lay the wood on the Jackets attack. Very Physical game, maybe even some rain and some tempers flair. A few key personal foul calls. This one will be a low scoring game, with both teams coming in banged up to begin with. The Jackets put the ball in #21’s hands and he boosts the team morale with some hard-fought yards and touchdown runs inside the 10. Tech finds a way to win, in a narrow escape. FINAL SCORE: Ga Tech 20 UVA 17

October 31, Halloween
Georgia Tech @ Vanderbilt.
After a ruff and tuff game in Virginia, the Jackets head up to Nashville to face a struggling Vandy team. It’s a breath of fresh air to the Tech faithful as the Yellow Jackets open it up vs. the Vandy Defense. Vandy has trouble moving the ball, while Tech does the opposite here, running up and down the field while attempting 0 punts. Throw in a converted on-side kick with 4 fourth down conversions, and this one ends Tech fans spending a late night celebrating in Downtown Broadway Nashville on Halloween Night.
FINAL SCORE: Ga Tech 38 Vandy 14

November 7
Wake Forrest @ Georgia Tech.
Some experts have Wake Forrest turning some heads this year, and maybe even sneaking their way into the ACC Championship game. I don’t know about all of that, but I do believe this game to be a battle. Rematch of the 2006 Conference Championship Game. I think that game ended up with a score like 9-6. I’m not thinking quite that kind of battle. Wake should be able to move the ball effectively through the air and keep the score close all game long. Nesbitt and Dwyer get it done on the ground in the 4th quarter to seal it up. But not after a huge defensive stand the drive before. It was closer than the score indicated. FINAL SCORE: Ga Tech 34 Wake 20

November 14
Georgia Tech @ Duke.
Well I do believe the Blue Devils will score on Tech this year, but not much. I expect Jaybo Shaw, along with many other subs, to see much of the 2nd half. Paul Johnson will pile it on early and coast in this one, to rest his players and get his 2nd and 3rd tier guys some action. FINAL SCORE: Ga Tech 40 Duke 13

November 28
Georgia @ Georgia Tech.
I think I am going to take a different angle on this game. There is so much hatred between these two teams and fan bases, that I think I will let this one be decided on the field. I will make no in-game predictions here, but rather, I’ll let you all decide. However, I will still give a final score. Something about 45-42 has a bit of a ring to it (no pun intended), but two years in a row? Not likely. I do believe both defenses can do better. They almost have to, right? It is tough to get a feel for this game. Only problem here is this…Georgia will come in with everything to prove vs. Tech for a change this year, following a rocky road leading in. Both teams will be gunning for the other, and you can bet Paul Johnson knows why he was brought to Tech. Long as he beats Georgia, contract extensions will be sure to follow. This game will come down to whoever has the most WILL to win. Last year it was Tech. Tech is at Home. In probably my biggest and boldest prediction of Tech’s 2009 season, The Jackets will go undefeated at home. Therefore, FINAL SCORE: Ga Tech 28 UGA 24

Post-regular season predictions will come out in November.

Thank you for your time.

DJ, Stumpknocker and macrotech, thanks for your kind words. However, your responses lack any originality.

DJ… you will find out this year that CPJ is a pretty ordinary coach. One win over UGA doesn’t make him Bear Bryant. You are too sensitive a person to be on this blog so go pet your cat.

Stumpknocker… what does that handle say about you. Standing on a stump make it easier to get to the animal? Did you check the final rankings last year? Even when GA loses to Tech they are rated higher. Shows you how much respect the tech program has. The 38 to 3 bashing by a 5 loss SEC team probably didn’t help. Now go work on your pickup truck.

macrotech, you sound like the youngester in the bunch. A little banny rooster type. Thanks for allowing UGA to keep its totally dominate record over tech. UGA is your daddy boy and they will reassert themselves this year so don’t get too far from that hole you crawled out of.

Billy Casey, so you were a high school QB. So was I. We ran the option out of a pro set. Read the tackle and end, give it to the A back, keep it or pitch it. The QB takes a pounding because most defenses adjust by having the defensive end close on the QB faster to force him to pitch. The corner and safety have to make the play. I have nave coached but I do know the game.
