Day 10 in the books, in its entirety

Alright, first off I hope that I’ve made some progress in efforts to clean up the blog a bit. I don’t mind a bit of trash talking, but it was devolving into something that was neither entertaining nor useful. I realize the few bad apples thing….

Now, on to football.

Wait, I lied. On to Sports Illustrated. I don’t know who was on the cover of yours this week, but mine featured Ole Miss as the cover story for the College Football Preview section. SI likes to do regional coverages, but I’m not sure what Ole Miss has to do with Atlanta.

Anyway, it ranks Georgia Tech 12th and predicts the Jackets to to go 9-3, 6-2. It predicts Virginia Tech to defeat FSU for the ACC championship. Of course this was written before Darren Evans was ruled out for the season with a torn ACL.

Other ACC teams in SI’s top 20: Virginia Tech (5), FSU (16) and North Carolina (20).

On to Wednesday’s wrap up.  The team finished with an 11-on-11 drill that didn’t seem as crisp as others. The offensive line still seems to be searching for its mojo when it comes to pass protection. However, there were several nice plays made iby either side in other drills, some of which I documented in the notebook that my friends in digital have already posted on, so please sneak a peek-a-loo.

Practices will be closed starting Monday, so I won’t be able to tell you the good and bad from each day. However, I’m sure Coach Johnson will fill us in, and his opinion carries a little more weight than mine.

Apparently there’s a bit of a misconception that the Clemson game on Thursday, Sept. 10 has been sold out. It has not. There are seats available.

In basketball news, Rivals just ranked Tech’s class as the fourth-best in the country, for what it’s worth.

In tennis, sophomore Kevin King defeated the No. 1 juniors player in the country, Alexander Domijan, 6-7 (0), 6-4, 7-6 (2) in the fourth round of the USTA National Championships Wednesday in Kalamazoo, Mich.

I’m pretty good at Wii tennis, but that’s about it.

SI’s theme is teams that can crash the BCS party. Tell me who you think will crash the ACC party this year, and why? It’s no secret that Virginia Tech has ruled the roost the past few years. Is this the year that N.C. State, led by QB Russell Wilson, cracks the title game? What about Dabo and Clemson? Will Tech win it?

Thanks for the good coverage. The comments feature is something we can live without if folks can’t behave.

Looking forward to the TJ Barnes piece this Sunday.

Georgia Tech can win the ACC but it’s not a cake walk. Also, Virginia Tech will be ready to play. They are a good team.

Thanks for the update Doug.

I think you got your dates wrong. The Clemson game is on the 10th of September. I am enjoying the rest of the coverage.

the date has been changed, thanks.

Oh, and to the person who has asked about Claytor, it seems like it’s something that will be going on all season. But I think he’ll be ready when he’s needed. But that’s just a guess on my part. It seems like it’s one of those nagging injuries that a person can live with, but don’t need to go out of their way to aggravate. I could be very wrong.

Pretty cool the ACC has some teams high up… Finally getting the attention we deserve. I really think that any team in the ACC can get to the top, its a toss up. But GT is definitely now coming in as a favorite and despite some of the practices, they will not disappoint when it matters.
Thanks for the extensive update… Love tennis and Kevin is a talented player love watching him on the court he’ll be a big part of the team this year.

We Loose to fsu and we lose a tough 1 2 north Carolina they always give us fits. And we always lose 1 that we will come down 2wat VT confrence record is this season. But that’s just my guess

I think the phrase “crash the party” gets misused. To me, I think “crashing a party” refers to a team many (media and fans) have predicted to finish below or near .500 but end up having an impact in the conference race or BCS race. TECH qualified for this last year. Many predicted they would win 3-4 games and finish 4-5 in their conference’s division. This year if they win their conference or division I would not consider them to have crashed anything. Just simply took control. So, I would put Wake Forest and Clemson as the possible “party crashers”. Though Clemson got spanked in the Dome by BAMA, they still managed a winning record during a mid-season coaching change, beat USCe, and have some great athletes. Why WFU? I just like them because they play disciplined. They have a top notch coach and an experienced, tough, and smart QB in Skinner. They also beat Ole Miss, who we all know took out the National Champions. Both these teams are very dangerous and TECH plays them both.

Doug, Thanks for the Nick Claytor update. Hard to believe that every home game isn’t already a sell out. Come on everyone, get onboard now before the winning season starts. Show the team our support by selling the place out on gameday. Don’t wait.

thought we’d have a clean board for once but ole’ Saint Simmons had to wreck the party. Way to go funny man. I bet the ladies love your comedy and you’ll be doing stand up before you know it. You know, stand up while you wash the dishes at the Waffle House.

Thanks for the practice updates. While their practices appear to be inconsistent, I wouldn’t put too much stock in it. That’s what practices are for. To work on the things you have trouble perfecting. I’m sure that once the doors are closed, Tech will get down to business and begin perfecting what they are good at while cleaning up the inconsistencies.

Doug, I agree with Good Word. There are probably 8 or even 9 teams that have a legitimate shot at winning the ACC this year. After all, 11 teams were in contention in the last week of ACC play last year. And that’s why I say the ACC is underrated because every team in the ACC is at least decent. Every team in the ACC received a Top25 AP vote at some point last year (including Duke).

That said, I think the potential crashers are Miami, NCSU, Clemson, and WF. GT, VT, FSU, and UNC already are on the precipice. I know some people out there might be thinking Miami isn’t a crasher, they’re on the edge themselves. No sir! They haven’t proven squat in the ACC. We all fear the name much more than we fear the team. They’re now the ACC’s version of Notre Dame.

…has no shot at anything! Don’t know about the rest of them, especially FSU, but it is highly doubtful that anyone but VT has a shot at anything, even with the loss of the RB. Frank Beamer is one of those coaches you never bet against (like Lou Holtz, Bear Bryant, Dean Smith, etc) especially when challenged. Should be an interesting year, however. Got my tickets yesterday, and got my UGA tickets last week. Still waiting for my Clemson tickets! Anybody need a ticket to college football game?

Watch out for WF, they have the 2nd best coach in the country, next to Paul Johnson of course.

I’m just glad we got them at home this year.

Wake does not have the players to hang with Tech, and its payback time for the ACCCG debacle in Jax come Nov 7. Tech has to win at home, Clemson, UNC, WF, VT and steal some wins on the road, Duke, Miami or UVA. 7-1 is not without merit, but I’d settle for 6-2, provided all of our players are able to compete and we have the depth for people to step in. 4-4 would be a disappointment.

I would look out for Wake. They play Navy two weeks before playing Tech, plus they played Navy twice last year. Of course Wake is just one of the teams who will catch on to your pathetic PEE WEE GIMMICK offense this year. Just look at the LSU tape boys…

Reality Check

August 13th, 2009
11:28 am

Tech finishing 12th is not likely with 4 losses. Two big issues;OL and DL. And Tech has always found a way to lose a game they shouldnot lose (see Virginia and almost Gardner Webb). Aside from the Ga. win last season was the same as any Chan Gailey season; 4 losses including a bowl embarrassment. It was clear the bees thought they had arrived after beating G.for the first time in 8 years so they got waxed by a 7 and 5 LSU team and blame the fact that they never crossed the goal line on special teams. This offense is going to get stuffed this year and CPJ will look more like Chan than ever.

A chan gailey season is 5 losses, but you’re right. Tech could well have lost a couple games last year that they won. I think the reason for the enthusiasm is that Tech was widely thought of as a 3-4 win team before the season. On the other hand, uga was preseason #1, finished with a better record than Tech, but was a disappointment.

Cus likes to talk about every game except the UGAY thrashing (45-42). Why is that Cuz ? You can’t take the azz whuppen you got on your cesspool field? Better get use to it, cause your going to get it again this year, only much, much worse. Tell Willie’s boys come get some of this perfect option.(56-6). There goes Roddy, There goes Roddy !!!!
