Day 8 in the books

The second practice in Monday’s first two-a-days was realatively quiet. The players practiced in shells. There was no 11-on-11, just a lot of work on fundamentals.

Repeating what he said after the morning practice, Coach Johnson wasn’t pleased with the day’s efforts. He chalked it up to fatigue, but said the team needs to learn how to fight through it.

He was pleased with how Scott Blair kicked the ball at the end of the first practice, though. Blair went 4-for-4 from various spots on the field.

Because of injuries to Jaybo Shaw and Jordan Luallen, Josh Nesbitt, Tevin Washington and David Sims took most of the snaps. The defensive line looked very active in the 11-on-11 portion of the first practice.

To answer a question from yesterday, I think the offense looks better from the first day. The coaches have indicated the same.

I’ve got a story coming out on Wednesday about Georgia Tech’s efforts to improve its pass-efficiency from last season. It’s the first part in a three-part series that will appear every Wednesday. I know what I think the team’s weaknesses last season were, but I’d like to hear your thoughts and why.

If you are curious, my first two are pass-efficiency and special teams. I’m still trying to decide the third, but I’m leaning toward limiting turnovers.

What are your thoughts?

Pass efficiency most definitely needs to improve in order for GT to take the next step.

I laughed out loud at cuz’s last post. That was pretty funny. He is the new St. Simons of the GT blog only more animated. “rip off his head and place it on a pike”….. that’s rich!

@elwoodGT
“linebackers getting slobberknocked by an offensive tackle at full speed.”

Thanks to the magic of Tivo we can watch that stuff over and over again. There’s *nothing* more exciting in football than a key block making the play happen.

I’m also looking forward to seeing Godhigh laying down field opponents out, while Dwyer’s en route to six.

Doug, Shaw had some issues last year with head injuries and appears to be dealing with another head issue currently. Is he possibly too fragile to be in the number 2 position?

Hey, “Tix” I hear those puppy dawg fans had to use their food stamps to buy their UGA tix this year. Economy is tough but giving up Budweiser, Cigarettes and UGA tix are out of the question.

Hey “tix” not good at math eeh! UGA a 40,000+ student body vs. an educational school GT that has 9,500. That alone should embarrass you when you consider just the size difference between the two and we still went up to lowly Athens and kicked your butt. We don’t care if there are 80K+ drunk Dawg fans screaming woof woof. We just enjoyed kicking your behinds and I really loved the puppy dawg fans faces during that Alabama game last year. That was classic. Our kids don’t care how many are in the stands.

Any updates on Dwyer’s hip injury? Also, how out of condition is he? I heard he gained a little weight this summer. Also, how much time is spent during practice running the ball versus passing?

Has anyone got the NCAA 10 game and does it come close at all to capturing the CPJ offense?

The prognosis on DUH-WYER’s hip injury is PAIN, when the DAWGS are through working on his HIP he’ll never play football again! Just wait till KADE WESTON gets his hands on DUH-WYER’S HIP. HE’LL BREAK HIS TORSO IN TWO! Can’t WAIT to see DUH-WYER’S career ending injury against the DAWGS at the JOKE BY COKE this NOVEMBER.

Reality Check

LOL, you basically made my point for me; weak offensive line, missed a wide open receiver. Pass blocking is different and more difficult than chop blocking plus your QB is suspect with his throws. LSU lost 5 games with the same defensive line that stuffed your offense. Gardner Webb held Tech to one TD. How good was that offensive line? No one is going to let Tech sneak up on them this year. One other thing, your defensive line is going to be like a sieve this year. All the optimisim is exciting, just not grounded in reality.

A few questions:
I wouldn’t think Shaw is fragile, I think his helmet needs a jaw pad. That’s it.
G-W held Tech to one touchdown because the QB that day wasn’t very efficient running the offense. Anytime you put a third-stringer in at any position, there’s going to be trouble. Witness what happened to Alabama’s left tackle against Utah in the Sugar Bowl.
A Georgia fan would be familiar with a sieve-like defensive line, having watched that team last year.
One of the players told me that the game does a good job of capturing the offense.
I think Dwyer is fine. CPJ said it was a minor injury. Dwyer was walking fine after practice. He looks like he could lose a couple of pounds when he’s walking around, but when the gets the ball during drills he doesn’t waste a lot of time getting from point A to point b. I wouldn’t worry about Dwyer.
This will be the last thing I’ll say about the LSU game, cuz it’s becoming a zombie topic: Yes, LSU did a number on Tech last year. A big number. But, please keep in mind that special teams were responsible for 21 of those points. Had Thomas caught that early touchdown pass, Tech would have had a 10-0 lead, which may have altered LSU’s mood and game-planning. And, there are very few teams in college last season that featured the talent and size on defense that LSU had. And, they were all healthy, something that wasn’t true for most of the season. Those are my two cents, feel free to dispute.

Doug,
You can add one other comment about the LSU game. You have 18 year old kids going to a bowl game minutes from campus. Tech has always struggled in this bowl game. You can’t discount the emotion in the college game. Not using this as an excuse but it’s part of the game.
