Q&A with Dwyer

Tim Tebow at Florida, Colt McCoy at Texas, Sam Bradford at Oklahoma and … Jonathan Dwyer at Georgia Tech.

The first three players are on most folk’s watch lists for the Heisman Trophy. Dwyer has popped up on some lists as a darkhorse candidate.

I got to sit down with Dwyer, last season’s ACC player of the year, for a few minutes last week for an abbreviated version of the Q&A’s we’ve been running this summer.

AJC: Which running backs do you like to watch?

JD: Growing up, as a kid, Walter Payton. But now, in this new era, Adrian Peterson of the Vikings and LaDainian Tomlinson.

AJC: What about those guys do you like watching?

JD: Adrian Peterson has a lot of style like Walter Payton. He’s powerful and once he touches the ball he’s going full speed at you the whole time. If youre in his way he’s going to run you over. If he can’t run you over he’s going to run around you and make somebody make a big play.

AJC: You are being mentioned as potential Heisman candidate this year. There are three quarterbacks that are everyone’s favorite right now. Have you practiced the Heisman pose in the mirror?

JD: No. Maybe as little kid growing up. I’ve never even thought about it. Just taking it slow and enjoying college and enjoying hanging out with these guys and having fun with them.

AJC: I don’t know if you look at ajc.com, I hope you do. We had a story that Phil Steele left Tech out of the top 25 all together, which surprised me considering the number of starters you have coming back. Why do you think that is?

JD: Everybody thinks that the offense isn’t going to work now because everybody’s been preparing for it. But I mean you still have to respect us like any other team. Each and every week anybody can have a good week.

That’s probably why. But we don’t keep contact with all that ranking stuff. I know coach Johnson definitely doesn’t. I think there’s time for us to look at and use motivation for the season.

AJC: Who hits hardest on y’all’s defense?

JD: It’s a tie between a lot of guys. This crew can lay the wood on anybody.

Defensive line, it’s Derrick Morgan.

Linebackers. A bunch of people, from gladiator, Brad Jefferson, Cedric Griffin, AT Barnes and Sylvester.

Secondary, Burnett, Reece and Tarrant.

Who knows what these young guys can do once the season and games start up.

AJC: In the ACC?

JD: Who is the hardest hitter I ever had in the ACC. I don’t know.

My freshman year it would probably be Chris Long. Besides him I would say some guys from Clemson.

AJC: What’s the dumbest question you’ve been asked by a reporter? And you can’t include any of these.

JD: Probably from high school, I guess what school I would go to, constantly over and over, repeatedly.

Here is an excerpt from the ESPN article about college athletic spending. It shows just how pitiful our football program is. Coming off our best season in a decade, we can only sale 24,000 season tickets. That is 1/4 of our rival to the North East of us.

“Radakovich still feels fortunate that Georgia Tech’s athletic department is in better financial position than others. Coming off football coach Paul Johnson’s first season, in which the Yellow Jackets finished 9-4 and beat rival Georgia for the first time in eight years, ticket sales for the upcoming season have nearly exceeded projections. Georgia Tech has sold nearly 24,500 season tickets, according to Radakovich.”

What a joke. The only NC shirt you will be wearing says “I got WAXED in JAX!!!……again!”.

Dwyer seems to be a good kid with some serious skills. I watched a segment last night on CSS with him and he seems to carry himself very well and talks with some intelligence. It kind of suprised me like Knowshon did when he talked to the media. Both young men are very well spoken. Best of luck except for that game in November. GO DAWGS!!!!

Big Dawg,
You are fooling yourself to think that Caleb is the better back. They both came out of high school in the same year. Dwyer backed up Tashard Choice, who now plays for the Cowboys (when Choice started against the daunting Steelers D, Choice put up 100+ yards). I only mention this because Dwyer was too good to leave on the bench behind Choice. Dwyer had 400 yds as a back-up. Caleb had 0 casue he never left the bench. Last year Dwyer had the same 1400 yards as the gifted Moreno but Dwyer had 50 fewer carries. Caleb had 250? If he were as good as you say, he would’ve earned his way onto the field more last year. Injuries notwithstanding, Dwyer puts up 400+ yards more than King this year. Count on it…

How can you deny JD as a running back? He has the weight & quickness coming out of the backfield. He can be one of the best running backs in College Football this year. Caleb king maybe good eventually, but Dywer “The Diesel!” is the truth!
I’m glad the pups are excited about their team, but did any ga fans watch the spring game? If not go to on “demand on comcast or you tube.” They have their on concerns besides worrying about The Jackets! “Ramblin Wreck!”

I asked because you say stuff like “douchebag” and “dudes”. We ALWAYS have high expectations for the Dawgs and this year is no different. You see, the difference between UGA and GiT is that we EXPECT big things every year and you nerds get excited only once every 8 years. I mean, for crying out loud, support your team with the hotdog and coke deal and fill your cesspool of a stadium ONCE this year (other than when we invade). You and the gnats would be nothing if it weren’t for UGA. No other fans in the country rip other teams to make them feel better about themselves.

The dawgs on these boards have been bothering me with this for a while. Seems that some might need to revisit what prefixes mean.

Inferiority Complex: a sense of personal inferiority arising from conflict between the desire to be noticed and the fear of being humiliated

Superiority Complex: an exaggerated estimate of your own value and importance.

The way a lot of you throw around the inferiority complex phrase should be replaced with a superiority complex. Just saying.

It must really suck that y’all have to resort to making fun of our stadium because y’all dont have anything better to argue about. We have the better team again this year. Dwyer is a stud and he will definitely do a hell of a lot more in the NFL than Moreno. This goofy offense that y’all talked about ran all over UGA’s ass’s last year and we will do it again with Dwyer, Jones, and Allen. Our backfield is stacked and one of the best in the country. It must suck for y’all that such a goofy offense had 409 rushing yards against y’all when the big bad stud Moreno only led y’alls rushing to a whopping 81 yards. Yeah I hate our Goofy offense.
