Tim Tebow at Florida, Colt McCoy at Texas, Sam Bradford at Oklahoma and … Jonathan Dwyer at Georgia Tech.
The first three players are on most folk’s watch lists for the Heisman Trophy. Dwyer has popped up on some lists as a darkhorse candidate.
I got to sit down with Dwyer, last season’s ACC player of the year, for a few minutes last week for an abbreviated version of the Q&A’s we’ve been running this summer.
AJC: Which running backs do you like to watch?
JD: Growing up, as a kid, Walter Payton. But now, in this new era, Adrian Peterson of the Vikings and LaDainian Tomlinson.
AJC: What about those guys do you like watching?
JD: Adrian Peterson has a lot of style like Walter Payton. He’s powerful and once he touches the ball he’s going full speed at you the whole time. If youre in his way he’s going to run you over. If he can’t run you over he’s going to run around you and make somebody make a big play.
AJC: You are being mentioned as potential Heisman candidate this year. There are three quarterbacks that are everyone’s favorite right now. Have you practiced the Heisman pose in the mirror?
JD: No. Maybe as little kid growing up. I’ve never even thought about it. Just taking it slow and enjoying college and enjoying hanging out with these guys and having fun with them.
AJC: I don’t know if you look at ajc.com, I hope you do. We had a story that Phil Steele left Tech out of the top 25 all together, which surprised me considering the number of starters you have coming back. Why do you think that is?
JD: Everybody thinks that the offense isn’t going to work now because everybody’s been preparing for it. But I mean you still have to respect us like any other team. Each and every week anybody can have a good week.
That’s probably why. But we don’t keep contact with all that ranking stuff. I know coach Johnson definitely doesn’t. I think there’s time for us to look at and use motivation for the season.
AJC: Who hits hardest on y’all’s defense?
JD: It’s a tie between a lot of guys. This crew can lay the wood on anybody.
Defensive line, it’s Derrick Morgan.
Linebackers. A bunch of people, from gladiator, Brad Jefferson, Cedric Griffin, AT Barnes and Sylvester.
Secondary, Burnett, Reece and Tarrant.
Who knows what these young guys can do once the season and games start up.
AJC: In the ACC?
JD: Who is the hardest hitter I ever had in the ACC. I don’t know.
My freshman year it would probably be Chris Long. Besides him I would say some guys from Clemson.
AJC: What’s the dumbest question you’ve been asked by a reporter? And you can’t include any of these.
JD: Probably from high school, I guess what school I would go to, constantly over and over, repeatedly.

HUH, you are right. Let’s just put UGA and TEXAS in the BCS game on Sept. 1 and be done with the season. UGA ain’t that good. CJP ain’t Chan. CPJ will keep the kids in the game (see last year’s second half)and the blow out ain’t gonna happen. If J. COX is your QB after the 3rd game I will be so suprised. The season opener will be called forever the PROS vs Average JOE.

I think Dwyer is a legitimate Heisman Trophy candidate. He will put some numbers up with that offense and he has some magic in him. He is a threat every time he touches the ball. 3) Are you attempting to get back at us because douchebags like “ramble on”, “m”, and “saint simons” invade the uga blog?
I am not attempting to “get back” at anyone. I have no reason for revenge on the Techies. Sure, losing to a second rate program like Georgia Tech hurts a great deal, but I hated you just as much before you beat us last year. In fact, I probably hated you more because you had absolutely no room to say anything bad about UGA but still ran your big fat mouths anyway. At least now you’ve finally got a recent win under your belt, albeit a total 3 point fluke that we basically gave you. Anyway, this has nothing to do with revenge Techie. It has everything to do with a complete lack of respect and general disdain for Georgia Tech football fans. You are the worst of the worst and, quite frankly, an embarrassment to the sport of football in this state. Like I’ve said before, nothing personal.

As a life-long and die-hard DAWG fan whose entire family are Georgia Grads, I must admit that I am in agreement with U.S. News and World Report in that GA Tech is the 8th best technical school in the WORLD. Only some very high tech schools beat it out and Tech is still climbing.
Takethis as a compliment, Techies: that is great and you guys should be proud. Forget football for a minute and think of what a ranking of that means to a school.

Wow!!! The Techies continue to be preoccupied with UGA. Why the comparisons of Dwyer to Moreno? Just be happy you have a good tailback in #21.
Moreno was so terrible he had to leave after playing just two seasons behind freshmen and sophomores on the OL and then had to settle for being selected in the first round (#12 overall) by the Broncos. Poor guy.
And that team Moreno played on was so terrible. Gosh, a lousy 11-2 season for 2007, a BCS bowl victory & a #2 final ranking while playing in the most competitive league. And then that terrible disappointing 2008 team going 10-3 and having another Top 10 finish in the USA Today/Coaches Poll.
This UGA team is just so lousy year after year. In 2002, they go 13-1 and finish #3 in the country and a BCS bowl win. In 2003, the team went 11-3 and finished #6 in the country. In 2004 these UGA bums went 10-2 and finished #6 in the country. In 2005 UGA goes 10-3 and has another Top 10 finish. In 2006, a down year…Dogs have to settle for a 9-4 record and win the Peach Bowl again over an ACC team. Oh, and they beat Tech again.
So for the last seven years, that lousy Georgia program had ten or more wins six of the seven seasons, a top 10 finish in six of seven seasons so I can really see where this program is overrated year after year.
It takes an ACC team eight years to finally beat a Mark Richt UGA team. Before that, Richt was 12-0 vs the ACC. Wow, I can’t believe all the tough years UGA has had to endure.

Let’s see what your boy CPJ does over a few more seasons. I think UGA will be a little more motivated for the game Thanksgiving Saturday, and let’s see how Tech does in the ACC this year. I think that league is going to be better than people think, and Tech is in a situation they are not used to being…having the bullseye on them.
If CPJ does continue to win averaging 8.5 to 9.0 wins over a few seasons, he’ll probably jump ship to another program. More and more programs are open minded to different offenses when looking at teams such as Florida and Utah. If Nebraska doesn’t find success pretty soon with Bo Pelini, I think the people in Lincoln would love to see an option attack back at NU.

Third Quarter, one of my best friends who sits next to me at work is a Tech fan (not alum but his dad went there), and we usually make it to the Thursday night game and the conversations are always respectful. One of my favorite games was the 1991 game against UVA. I got to enjoy a NCAA game while watching other people stress out.
I’m a college football fan as much as a UGA fan/alum. I really enjoy good conversation with fans of other teams, and I love watching all the games. Saturdays are wonderful at the house with three tv’s lined up checking out most of the significant games.
I’m really curious about GT because the offense is difficult to prepare for, and they will play several good clubs in the ACC. My personal darkhorse for the league is UNC Chapel Hill. I think Davis is just sitting low and has been slowly but surely building up talent.
As for CPJ, maybe he’ll have success and like Atlanta and stay. Who knows.
As for UGA’s upcoming season, who knows? I knew last seasons #1 preseason ranking was not smart, but that is typical of the media. Not too many teams will finish in the Top 5 with freshmen and sophomores on the OL. Hopefully the bunch will stay healthy and give us a chance to win a few ballgames. Just hope the D can play with some emotion and motivation to tackle.

Doug Ivestor is a UGA man and previously was the CEO of some company called Coca-Cola.
Remember the Olympics and that Billy Payne guy? You know, the Chairman of the committee…also executive of a major bank…yep, UGA.
There have been a few senators and governors who obtained their positions coming from UGA….eventhough we may not be too crazy about the job they do, those are prestigeous forms of employment. Hey, GT and Navy share one in Jimmy Carter…sure you want to claim him? Got to give Tech credit for Jeff Foxworthy…he’s pretty funny.
Just love the sterotyping you people do. Makes you look, uh…not too bright.

Dwyer is a good back, I’ll hold back the higher accolades until he does it two seasons in row. GTs offense may be as good or better than last years, however the D will have a lot to prove. I see the season for tech as being very similar to last, with a loss to UGA in November.

Another stellar 6-7 win season for the Jackets.

10-2 is the final season record for GT next year. They will loose to Fl State and VA. Us loosing to Vandy….hahahaha. Us not beating UGA….hahaha. You UGA guys talk about how we are going to get are butts kicked next year. We might loose the first half but we now, unlike the Chan days, make adjustments at half time. We won 45-42, you guys gave up 16 unanswered points. It’s not a one time thing, it’s more like a “Get used to it UGA fans” type thing.

The jackets are starting a dynasty. 10-11 wins a year will be common. We will rule the ACC and beat down the dawgs to cap it off. No way we can be stopped.

Native Atlantan – not my sentiments, but rather those of UGA’s lawyer. It’s an oldie, but a goodie.
“The administrators had conceded that athletes were often carried, and their lawyer argued that if an illiterate jock learned to read at Georgia and thus became a mail clerk instead of a garbage man, the university was doing its job”

If Dwyer is to have an outside shot at the Heisman trophy, then GT must be error proof, fumble proof and undefeated at the end of the season. Joe Hamilton got a lot of publicity and had a great season but when you lose to Wake Forest 10 years ago….no Heisman…GT has no credibility with the media….at 12-0, they will… and deservedly so. Otherwise, the trophy goes elsewhere…And by the way the use of the term as in a Southern vernacular, “you all” (second person plural) is contracted as y’all…..not yall, not ya’ll…….not yawl……simply y’all and as some cool comedian once said, the plural of y’all is “ALL Y’ALL”

Sadly, the link to the Jan Kemp affair posted above is a blot on the athletic achievements of the ga school that can never be lived down. It is a blemish on the entire State. President Davidson’s remarks can only be described as an insult to any academic integrity. One wonders what must still be happening in the name of football even today.

Just want to remind you Tech fans that even though you won the game by three points….Georgia still owns youR A-S in football. You bee fans talk a big game ..but year in and year out you don’t even show up and sell out your home games to support your team.If you can’t sell out that cracker box stadium of yours no one will ever take your program seriously. You have a major inferiority complex towrds UGA and will always have one. UGA fans support their program you don’t. Why would any decent athlete that wants to play in the NFL want to go to Tech and play in a gimmic offense.Be prepared for another disappointing season and loss to UGA.

Dwyer is a good back – not a great back but a serviceable one. Wait ’til you Jackets see Caleb King though… he’s got twice the talent as Dwyer and works just as hard. He’ll be unstoppable for UGA this year and will be a key contributor to our first of two national championships…you heard me right…we’re beginning our march this year!

grow up both of you two teams, uga is overated n tech is basically all hyped after not gettin in to the acc championship. i like gt when they play but it evens out. stafford is overated and joe cox. dwyer is a great player, so is caleb king, jaybo and nesbitt can run and jaybo can throw good too. just go back to your beds, cry, suck your thumbs bc both of yall are going to atleast lose one game. oh and the winner for the heisman is either tebow or pryor. because BOTH are dual threats and play great schedules. im a geaux tiger and i say we all get mediocre bowl games

The Truth, “Why would any decent athlete that wants to play in the NFL want to go to Tech and play in a gimmic offense.”? Because, while your pups might be stacking up your little victories between Tech and the leg humpers; we’ve got a nice little collection of National Championship trophies as opposed to your one… your tradition of winning little victories mean little compared to the big ones that we’ve enjoyed Tech is well represented in the NFL… if they’re good enough, they’ll make it to the next level! GO TECH!!!

Somebody said Huh needed a girlfriend. I think they missed the clues he’s been giving. He needs another boyfriend. Not that there’s anything wrong with that…
Or maybe his dawg died and he needs another one. I know that’s gotta hurt.
