No big surprises there. That’s what’s exciting to me, is being so good and young at the starting positions that you know who was going to be the starters after the last play of the Chickfila bowl. The only real wildcard is Anthony Allen, because he can float between Aback and Bback. I’d be willing to bet that TJ Barnes will be the starter at DT at some point, and JC Lanier will be playing in the rotation from the first game. But everything else is as it should be.

Thanks, DR; nice “Jerk” reference! Why 2 “A-Back” listings? I know that they are little used in the CPJ offense, but do we not even recruit nor list TEs anymore? Is Cedric Griffin or Brad Jefferson “The Gladiator”? THWG!

Thanks for the research. The biggest concern I have still boils down to kicking. Scott Blair handeling both duties again? I’m not sure if he’s a good kicker or a bad kicker, but he definitely did not impress me in handeling both positions last year. If Anerson, Elakman, and Crosby are on scholarship, one of them needs to take whichever spot Blair is weakest at. I was definitely not impressed with puntin last year, I personally think kicking field goals is technically easier than punting (putning requires more leg strength unless your talking about kicking 50+ field goals all the time), but kicking field goals is far more of a mental challenge. Blair has the experience so I would be inclined to give him the edge on the full time field goal job.

Nothing much new here…………it’s pretty much the same as the spring depth chart. Looking at it now, especially now that fall camp is approaching, a few issues pop up:

-TJ Barnes MUST earn enough trust from the coaching staff to play at least 30-40% of the defensive snaps at tackle. He’s one the guy we have that can, in theory, clog the middle of the run every time. With Peters and Anderson, we got two active, yet undersized guys that could get worn down at the end of games. I saw that happen too many times under Tenuta-led D-lines.
-It should be interesting to see if Dieke can get a spot in the DE rotation if he’s listed second team here. If his recruiting profile is even near accurate, he’ll need to add some serious weight before hitting the field.
-The only two freshman I can see probably getting on the field this year other than Dieke are Stephen Hill and JC Lanier. Both of them should to be redshirted, especially Lanier. Lanier has the size, but I doubt he’ll have the stamina that Coach Johnson is looking for at this point. However, if they can play themselves into the two deep, they should see the field.
-O-line health is gonna be critical this year…….our starting line has enough issues as it is. They have got to pick up their assignments and pass protection if we have any hope of reaching double digit wins this year. They play up to their talent, and we’ll be ACC-title caliber, hands down. If they play like last year, it’ll be like playing russian roulette…..mabye we’ll be good, maybe we’ll get stomped.

I agree that JC Lanier will play a lot of football.
And you can look for other incoming Frosh to play a lot of ball. Johnson is still not at the point where he can redshirt all incoming players.

Glad you douchebags can join us EVERYDAY here on the GEORGIA TECH YELLOW JACKETS BLOG. Better than visiting your own team’s lame blog huh? I don’t blame ya! Anyways, I guess JB your point is our players don’t have good character by your sarcastic remark. Didn’t UGA set some sort of offseason arrest count record last year? Call me crazy but I wouldn’t call UGA as being the most character driven school with “outstanding citizens”. Don’t get me wrong. Tech has had it’s fair share of problematic players (ie. rueben houston and others…) but not nearly the number of UGA’s. My favorite was the Georgia player who got drunk last year and vandalized the Hosptial. Haha..gotta love that outstanding citizen! Either way…I know your team can do no wrong in your eyes but calm down a bit with the high and mighty b.s. And maybe try to go over to the UGA blog and check out what’s going on during your teams offseason. Don’t you care to know about you own team? You d’bags seems to spend entirely too much time reading about and commenting on what Tech is up to….

I really like the depth at the linebacker position, and to have Tarrant backing up is very impressive. But in response to whoever said something about Dieke: Doug briefly touched on it, but the dude is huge. He came to one of our parties in the last week or two, and he’s a giant, big too. BJ Machen is a guy to watch out for at linebacker. In my opinion, this year, the sky is the limit.

Good job Doug and I appreciate it. One question I have is Lucas Cox not going to get some snaps at B-back this year? He certainly doesn’t have Dwyers breakaway speed ( not many do though) but I thought he did a really good job on the limited carries he got. Is this just a case of all of the A and B backs will be interchangeable?

Ooooooooooooh, I’m so scared. Lets see, what are you going to “slam” me with? All those BCS bowls that Georgia Tech has been to? All those conference championships that it has won? All those top 10 rankings that it finishes with? A 9 win season? A runner up finish in the Chicken Bowl? A 3 point win over your instate rival for the first time in 8 flippin’ years? I am so so scared!!!

Nothing about UGA interests you in the least? Earth to moron: Your name is “supersize that order, MUTT” and all you ever post about is UGA. My god son get a clue and quit embarrassing yourself.

Huh?, you just don’t get it, do you, bubba? I CHOOSE not to go on the UGAG site because nothing posted there, either good or bad, is of any interest to me. Apparently something on the Tech site interests you, or you wouldn’t be here—DAILY. Sadly, the only way you seem to have of expressing that interest is by trashing Tech (whether it be the school, the stadium, the fans, the students, or the athletes). It’s because of a**holes like you that I have the name that I do, and it is ONLY in response to the inane or trashy comments some of you make that I respond in kind. If you jerks didn’t post here, I would have a different name and consistently talk about Tech athletics, or whatever the current topic is supposed to be. You guys, however, remind me of the goofy bully in the movie “A Christmas Story.” He could dish it out all day long and get away with it. But then the nerdy little kid with glasses stood up to him, and beat the crap out of him. Since you think we are all nerds anyway, that makes for a good analogy. If you’re going to dish it out, then be prepared to take it, or go post on the UGA site where you belong.

LOL at some of this stuff. The folks who say that GT recruits different players than UGA are living in a fantasy world. Michael Lemon, the only UGA player who has had any major legal trouble chose UGA over GT. If GT could get some of these guys that go to Clemson, Bama, etc that get into trouble, they would have got them because they offered them scholarships. If you don’t believe, me check rivals. The feud here is funny because GT fans think CPJ is the greatest thing ever after a 9-4 season and UGA is now “struggling” after a 10-3 season. Fact is, every single GT fan would have taken a win over UGA last year in Week 12 over a UVA over VT win. Even though a UVA win puts GT in the ACCCG. Just a different culture, UGA has been to and won BCS games and GT hasn’t even been to one. When they get close, like last year, they still are only obsessed with beating UGA. The difference here is obviously that UGA plays for rings. GT can sit here and say they will only get better under CPJ, but 9-4 is about what you will get from him. He is much more like Jim Donnan than Jim Tressel.

Oh, pups. You keep getting on the Tech blog, and rant about terrorists, shootings, 1 in the last 8 years. I’ll give you three exhibits for those in glass houses throwing stones:

i) Musa’s Smith’s dad ran terrorist training camps

ii) UGA professor, George Zinkhan, murders three (that’s three more than Tech professors)

iii) Paul Johnson, 1-0 & Mark Richt, 0-1

But aw shucks, “even a blind squirrel finds a nut”, right Bubba? Here’s another cliche. Hey, I’ll tell you what. You can get a good look at a butcher’s a** by sticking your head up there. But, wouldn’t you rather to take his word for it?

Hmm, outstanding, well though out diatribe, Jeff. But your gonna wish you could beat Tech rather than Florida in the years to come. Doug,
So the wolf position appears to be nothing but a 3rd safety based on the size/speed of the guys listed. Looks more like they have a 4-2 with 3 at safety. Do we not have enough LBs to play a real 4-3?? Are we so deep at safety that they’d rather put 3 of them on the field?? I am curious to know how they’ll line up.

You are right Bryan. It would actually do UGA fans a lot of good for Tech to start winning. Then, they could talk about all-time series records instead of last year’s game for both us and Florida. Sure, they wouldn’t like to lose to us, but at least that way they would be consistant on what they regard as important.

The UGA professor also killed himself, so that threat is gone. How many muggers are still on the streets at Tech treatening students and the public alike?

Paul Johnson is 1-1 vs UGA (1-0 vs Richt); Richt is 7-1 vs GT (O-1 vs PJ) – but don’t let a good cliche’ get in the way of the facts.

The terrorist student from Tech just got convicted – but at least he is in jail.

Has Reuben Houston been released from jail yet? (Yes, I know he has – and he was allowed to return to play at GT, too).

How’s that Joe Hamilton working out as a coach for you guys?

Actually....

July 10th, 2009

…the Wolf linebacker and the outside linebacker are the same position, with the Wolf guy designated to go to either the strong or weak side depending upon down and distance and formation (that is why they differentiate with the “wolf” designation rather than “strong side” (or, as other teams call them the SAM backer) or “weak side” (WILL linebacker). So, no, he is not a safety.

Georgia Tech is the best college FB team in history of football. We have one 1 conference championship in the last 40 years, How many conference championships have you idiot UGAg teams won. We have been to 0 major bowls/BCS bowls how many have you UGAg teams been to since 1970? Also we have been to the Sillicon Valley bowl, Emerald Bowl, Seattle bowl and Blue turf bowl, how many times has UGAg been to one of these bowls the last 40 years. Until your team has these credentials don’t bother to post your weak response to our tradition.

I agree, Mr. Casey – Morgan Burnett is a stud (at least based on what I saw last year – reminded me of myself many, many years ago), and if he can continue with that intensity and playmaking ability he will indeed be a consensus AA!

Special Teams

July 10th, 2009
11:37 am

I think that Scott Blair can handle both jobs. The problem is that Tech spends very little time actually practicing special teams work which is why they weren’t very good last year or in the spring. I can undertand that they were introducing a new offense and defense and needed to spend the time last year and this spring practicing it. But special teams aren’t going to get any better unless they practice it. Being and old kicker and punter you can do them both. But practice is required as a lot of it is timing. They keep changing long snappers and holders which is the worse thing they can do. Pick a long snapper and holder and practice.

IGNORE THE DAWGS

July 10th, 2009
11:44 am

I say from here on out we begin to IGNORE DAWG FANS. The only reason they are here is to bait us and we fall for it every single time.

Let’s start now. Talk about the blog itself. Don’t talk about UGA vs Tech. If they make a comment act like you didn’t see it. They’ll eventually go away if you don’t respond.

Paul Johnson

July 10th, 2009

I think we should have Tevin Washington ahead of Jaybo shaw. He’s a better athlete and outshined Shaw in the spring. Also who’s gonna return punts and kicks? that is a bigger question. No way Scott Blair should handle the field goals. He is a much better punter. Id like to see someone else kick field goals.

Yes reality check, UGA has a much better tradition with all those national titles they’ve won since 1981. And their record vs florida is glimmering. They’ve owned the gators in recent years specially after Nov 1 2008. They scored 10 pts. Then they lost their 4th game vs Georgia Tech in the last 11 years.
What tradition! I think espn ranked UGA 16 overall three spots ahead of Tech for the last decade.

Coach Paul Johnson you are right. I would not trade our Sillicon Bowls, Peach Bowls, Emerald Bowl, Humanitarian Bowls for any of UGA’s five Sugar Bowls or Cotton Bowl since 1981. They have lost to Florida that kind of makes it feel better that we have lost 7/8 this decade to UGAg.

Georgia Tech has more National Championships, more conference championships, and the longest streak in the series. You can keep your series lead and talk all you want about it, but remember you also have the lead against Florida and you still get raped almost every single year.
