Money, Money, Money

First, let me say that this is the dead period in college sports. Many coaches are on vacation or holding camps right now.

So, that’s why I haven’t blogged in a couple of days. That, and I’ve been covering the Mexico-Venezuela game at the Georgia Dome.

However, Thursday is an important day at Tech. On Thursday the Athletic Association will hold its quarterly meeting and will approve the 2010 fiscal year budget.

From talks with various Tech officials, it appears the budget will be similar to last year’s, in the 50-plus million range.

I would be surprised if any new projects are approved considering the AA is still paying off the stadium expansion.

I’ll have a news story in Friday’s paper about the budget.

But, are you stunned at the costs of running an athletics department? It may not be something that many fans think about. I know I don’t for the teams I follow around the world. I want to win, and to do that you need either the best players, or the best players for your system.

Tech seems to be making smart hires in coaches who are very good at finding the players who fit their systems, which helps to get the maximum effect for the money spent.

What do you think about the Tech throw-back uniforms for basketball? I think it’s a pretty cool idea, and look forward to seeing Lawal and Favors rocking the old-school white tops with TECH across the chest.

Also, if you haven’t attended a soccer game that features the Mexican National Team, do so as a sports fan, just so you can say you have. It’s a pretty cool experience. There are a lot of college teams around the country that could only wish for this kind of home-field advantage.

I have to concur with “Summer Sucks!” I too enjoy the interviews with players. Any updates on the injuries with the offensive line? I know players continue to workout during the summer. Any info would be appreciated. “Ramblin Wreck!”

Football is a business and it takes money to make money. Paying new coaches (even those that are getting paid after they’re gone) is kind of like R&D. Travel is simply an operating expense. Recruiting is R&D too. All well worth it since football is one of two sports that make money for the AA.

Doug, can we get some pics posted of the unies?

I wish you would take more time to look into the stories you publish. If you did you would know that Tech is acutally in the process of instailling a new high-def video screen to replace the old one. Figures this is what we get by havin a UGAg grad writing for us.

Techfanatic, I did not know the Institute had a Journalism school. New screen should be cool to watch. Back in the Stone age if you missed the play, you missed the play. Good luck in the ACC this year. PJ is the real deal.

Doug, great line about the Mexican National team having home field advantage in the Dome.

I think there is a very evident reason why nobody reads this blog and comments on it anymore. The blog entries just seem half-baked. It seems like every entry is more posing a question, than giving us some acutal substance to work with. All of it is very opinionated and many of the blog entries are what Doug thinks about this, and not acutal hard facts. Ex: Today he blogs about Tech not approving anything else in its budget, however if he had any sort of sense or even driven past the stadium in the last couple months, he could see that Tech has a multi-million dollar high-definition video screen being installed. It is suppose to be state of the art and rival what Radakovich did in LSU with their ritzy video screen installed during his tenure there. Although I guess were luck if Doug know anything more that the names Vince Dooley and Reverend Richt. Here is to hoping we can have a fun place to read blogs and talk about a great Yellow Jacket football team this Fall. Sorry about the rant, AJC help us out.

The legacy of past unwise choices by the GTAA, and by those who “control” the GTAA still lingers, and GT is still paying the price.

While I think Bill Curry is one the finest men you’ll ever meet, he had no HC experience when GT hired him. GT’s on the field experince reflected that, for a LONG time. The GTAA hired Curry, and overlooked the then QBs Coach, one Heisman-trophy winnning Steve Spurrier. Just in case anyone forgot…Spurrier won the ACC…with Duke !!!!!!!!

When Bobby Ross left, GT hired Bill Lewis over the then OC Ralph Friedgen, and the then DC Georgia O’Leary. Why? How do you suppose Friedgen & O’Leary felt when GT hired some idiot coach from East-Bumble Carolina?

Then, after Homer Rice, a giant among men, retired, GTAA hired Dave Braine from VT. Why Braine? Braine was the one who denigrated the program with his “GT is not a 8-9-10 win type of prgram” BS. Who approved the hiring of that Braine-less tib of goo? Braine hired Paul Hewitt and Chan Gailey. Anyone remember the “controversy” over Braine’s recruitment process before he hired Hewitt? Now, questions continue to pop-up about Hewitt’s performance/future, and we all know how well the Gailey hire turned out. Why did the GTAA allow Braine to give Gailey a HUGE contract extension, JUST DAYS BEFORE, the NCAA dropped sanctions on the program. Braine said it was because Gailey had made the “required progress” to earn the extension. What progress? GT’s season that year was still in doubt with the game against Miami looming 3 days later, that would have dictated how the W-L record would likely go that year.

Who approved Braine’s decision to expand BDS? Serioulsy. I love GT, like the stadium, but GD, you dont put the GTAA in hock for a stadium expansion that cant pay for itself. Braine DEFINITELY left the GTAA much worse off than the way he found it.

Who are the knuckleheads that approved Braine’s decision to expand BDS? Serioulsy. I love GT, but GD, you dont put the GTAA in hock for a stadium expansion that cant pay for itself. Braine DEFINITELY left the GTAA worse off than he found it.

IMHO, Braine’s health wasnt the REAL reason why he “retired.” IMHO, he was told to take an F-ing hike, by those that give a damn about GT.

How is it that all the bad decisions just kept on happening, year after year??

At least I can FINALLY say that GT has gotten SERIOUS. They hired D-RAD, from a “big money program” to clean up the mess Braine left. And, so far, while not all GT fans are that happy with some of the “pricing” changes, IT HAD TO BE DONE. We, the fans, are having to pay the tab for all the past “sins.”

With D-RAD doing the types of things that “great” programs do, I am much more confident now. BTW GTAA, spend the money…and get a FIRST CLASS TRAILER/VEHCILE FOR TRANSPORTING THE RAMBLIN WRECK !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

techfanatic, I’m aware of the new scoreboard. I wrote about it a few weeks ago. I also reported how it’s being paid for.
I said in the blog I don’t expect any new projects…that is projects that have yet to be started. The scoreboard has been started.

I would prefer to use this blog as a medium to have a conversation with you, the fans of Tech. There are plenty of stories elsewhere on ajc.com/sports about Tech, none of which allow you to make comments.

To have that conversation, I will ask questions that solicit your opinion, even though most of the time the blog degenerates into a “Georgia stinks,” no “Tech stinks” type of thing. But, that’s the way it is.

Does anyone else on here wonder....

If Doug watches and roots for the Dawgs during football season. I mean, he pretty much has to right? He’s an alumni. That’s so sad when you think about it. Our Tech beat writer is a Georgia Fan. If that was the case on the UGA blog they’d boycott till they brought in someone new.

I wish I could say this is the last time I’ll say this, but it won’t be: Yes, I graduated from Georgia….in 1992. Didn’t set foot on campus after I graduated for 16 years, I think.

I think it’s a great school and a great campus. Can and have said that about many other colleges, including Tech.

Said this before also, but it’s worth saying again: A graduate of Georgia Tech would never compromise a project because it’s for a fan or graduate of Georgia. I’m going to cover Tech as best I can. Youll find the coverage fair, balanced and hopefully complete.

Doug...please answer one quick question...honestly

June 25th, 2009
12:27 pm

Do you root for the Georgia Bulldogs on Saturdays?

I’m not asking if Georgia is a good school or if Tech is a good school. Not asking if you’re a graduate or if you’ll cover Tech fairly. I’m just asking if you are a Georgia FAN?

Pretty cut and dry….Yes or No question…

Thanks Doug

Does anyone else on here wonder….

The fact that he didn’t answer the question, answers the question…….

Let's see...

June 25th, 2009
12:43 pm

…Doug said he graduated from UGA in 1992 and did not set foot on the campus again until 2008. That does not sound like a “bleeding red and balck” UGA fan to me.

He has a job to do, and he has said he will not be biased in his reporting. Why is that not enough for some of you folks? He used a great example by saying that a GT architect/engineer would not compromise a building for a UGA grad, so why would he want to do that to Tech?

It really does not matter who he roots for on Saturday; a job is a job – and most of us do it the best we can, no matter what outside influences may have led us to wherever we are at this time. So, give it a rest with the “he is biased” – so what?

Huh?

June 25th, 2009
12:50 pm

Doug, Tech fans rarely even attend Tech sporting events. I find it highly unlikely that Mexican soccer would interest them much. At any rate, good luck having a “conversation” with these clowns. If you aren’t telling them exactly what they want to hear you’re going to have a hard time. They really want to believe that you cheer for Georgia. That way they have something to cry about. I submit that if there were no UGA there would be no Tech fans. They need the boogie man in Athens. Its their lifeblood.

Doug, you are doing a fine job. You just have to ignore the “squeeky wheel” fans of both Tech (e.g. TechFanatic) and UGA (e.g. Huh?). We both know that there are a lot of great Tech and UGA fans out there that support their programs wholeheartedly. I am a Tech fan and always will be, and I could care less if you graduated from UGA as long as you cover us the best that you can. This is the first time in awhile that I can honestly say that I am looking forward to all sports seasons at GT. Go Jackets!

As I said in my first entry on this blog back in April. I don’t root for anybody, except Liverpool in the English Premier League. If, for some reason, they were to come to town to play a friendly against the Atlanta Fire (my made up MLS team name), then I probably wouldn’t cover it.

Hey Doug

June 25th, 2009

By the Tech way of thinking...

June 25th, 2009
1:15 pm

…Wes Durham should quit as the play by play guy since his dad is the play by play guy for UNC (and has been for some 40 years), and UNC is in the same conference as GT, so Wes is biased and does not really want Tech to win, he just wants to sound excited, but gloated big time last year when UNC beat the crap of the Tech.

And, further, the quarterback coach for Tech, Brian Bohannon, should be fired immediately since he, too, went to UGA, and he even played football there! It is all his fault whenever the QB fumbles the snap or throws and interception because he really wants the team to fail since, after all, he is a Bulldog through and through – which gives rise to what your savior, Coach Johnson was thinking when he hired a former Bulldog to coach at Tech!!!!

Yeah, such good rationale from supposedly bright fans.

Its really funny how Tech fans think they can avoid UGA fans and alumni. They simply cannot understand why there are so many UGA alumni and fans here in the state of Georgia. They take hours and hours of calculus and engineering classes, but do not understand why there are so many people affiliated with the University of GEORGIA in the state of GEORGIA. I may be a squeaky wheel but its also the dead honest truth. You cannot make this stuff up. For all of their boasting about how smart they are, the Techies sure do seem to be a dense lot. No offense intended (okay, maybe a little).

June 25th, 2009

…the broadcaster and coach don’t pull for UNC and UGA? Wes grew up in Chapel Hill, and went to Elon. Brian went to UGA – they HAVE to pull for UNC and UGA based on your way of thinking.

And, CPJ should be fired immediately since he hired a UGA grad! Let’s start a “FIRE PAUL JOHNSON” website so that we can get rid of a coach who would hire a UGA grad!

Huh?

June 25th, 2009

As I’ve said before, you so very obviously don’t get it. I don’t hate Tech. I hate Tech fans. Its nothing personal. You’re all fine people for the most part, but just the worst group of pathetic sports fans I have ever encountered. I mean really, you clowns take the taco. You are ill informed whiners and, worst of all, the biggest effing hypocrites on the planet. Doug,

I completely agree with Ruprecht. There is no team I hate in all of sports worse that UGA, but I always realize that the hatred is all in fun. It’s a hatred of the idea of UGA than the university or alumni, and I would never let that prevent me from appreciating the work of a UGA alum. Some of us come on here and read the blog but rarely comment. I enjoy your insight and the intreviews with the players. Keep up the good work, and don’t let the idiocy of a few very loud individuals get you down.

The only thing worse than a sore loser, is an obnoxious winner.

So Tech won last year and Georgia won 7 in a row. So what. Move on. Being obnoxious just reflects on your upbringing.

Each school gets a new shot this year, so just make sure you speak sweet words, because that way they dont taste so bad when you have to eat them.
