Something to tide you over, a Q&A with Josh Nesbitt
Josh Nesbitt will be a lot better this fall, so says coach Paul Johnson.
And he wasn’t saying that because Nesbitt had a bad year last year.
Nesbitt rushed for almost 700 yards and four touchdowns, passed for 800 yards and two more TDs while helping Tech come very close to winning the ACC’s Coastal Division.
And that was just his first season as a starting college quarterback and playing in an offense that was very different than anything he had played before. After all, he was a passing quarterback at Greene County High School.
While Nesbitt wouldn’t give up his recipe for pork chops, he did talk about the LSU game, and the expectations for this season (they are quite high).
When I return, we can talk about Gani Lawal’s decision and how it will affect Tech, as well as the rest of the ACC.

So, onto the conversation with Nesbitt:
AJC: How’s the shoulder?
JN: Everything’s healing well. 100 percent.
AJC: So you ready to get out there?
JN: Yes sir. Back with the team doing everything.
AJC: Coach Paul Johnson remarked yesterday that most people forget last year was your first season as a college starting quarterback. What’s the biggest difference between what you know about the offense in the fall, compared to now?
JN: In the fall it was like starting over, learning new things. Now, I feel like I have everything down pat and a feel for what coach wants me to do. I know what coach wants me to do. When I go out on the field, I know what checks coach wants me to make. I know where guys are supposed to be. So, I feel real comfortable right now.
AJC: Does it feel like you operating on instinct, as opposed to thinking about everything like in the fall?
JN: I don’t have to think as much. Everything’s just been quick now.
AJC: He said yall looked a lot faster in spring practice. Did yall feel that as well?
JN: Yes, because this offense is something that’s new for everybody. All of us have adjusted to it very well. Now that we know this we can just go out and play.
AJC: People are asking coach yesterday that now teams have a year’s worth of game film that they will be able to stop yall’s offense. Paraphrasing, he said “I find that hilarious, I really do. You can still beat us, but it’s not going to because you come up with some new scheme.” Does his confidence carry over to the team?
JN: Of course. We feel like any given moment of the game, any given set we can score. It doesn’t matter if you play it right, it only takes one person to be wrong.
AJC: When you first started learning the offense did you feel that way?
JN: Yes, because that’s the way he taught it. Because he taught us that if we do everything right, and everybody’s on the same page, there’s going to be a big play somewhere.
AJC: Yall have got a lot of speed at the skill positions this year. Is that fun for you when you are thinking about the checks and what may happen?
JN: Oh yeah. It doesn’t matter who is in the game, we don’t lose a step with anyone. We’re a lot more loaded than we were last year.
AJC: Who is the fastest player on the team now? And you can’t say you.
JN: I’m going to go with Morgan Burnett is fastest.
AJC: I didn’t know if Marcus [Wright] was faster.
JN: No, Marcus is not faster.
AJC: Who’s second fastest, who does it come down to?
JN: Not including myself, I would say kind of a tie. Mario Edwards or Jonathan Dwyer.
AJC: The offensive line had a lot of injuries to the starters in the spring. Two of the guys missed the whole spring, another guy missed some of the spring. Does that concern you going into August, or does it give you a little more confidence because other people got to get some reps.
JN: I’m not concerned. People can be injured, but as long as they stay in the game mentally and their backups are getting reps I feel pretty good about it.
AJC: Reading your bio in the media guide, it said one thing you cook very well is pork chops. What’s your pork chop recipe?
JN: I can’t tell you that. My mother will get mad for that one.
AJC: Can you even give a hint? Give a hint to a good porkchop?
JN: Know what you are doing.
AJC: Ever had a porkchop as good as you make? Or your mom makes?
JN: No.
AJC: It’s a tough beginning to the schedule this year. What’s going to be the key to getting a good start?
JN: Just us as a team making sure everybody is on the same page, meaning all three aspects of the game, kicking, defense, offense. Make sure everybody knows their role and make sure we have fun.
AJC: If we could talk about the bowl game for a second. Do you think, had yall caught the first touchdown pass, would it have been a different game?
JN: I think it would have been a different game.
AJC: Was it deflating?
JN: At the time, me myself, I have to have a short memory. Once I looked back at it, what if we had done this, had done that. You can’t dwell on the past much. You can only look at the future.
AJC: Was it the fastest defensive line you faced last year?
JN: Fastest, hands down. Fastest and biggest.
AJC: If people watch film of that, do you think they will have keys to beat yall? You can’t coach size and speed.
JN: People will go back and watch the film. If you really go back and watch that film we beat ourselves.
AJC: Any other moments from that game. If I had done this or done that?
JN: Me, myself. I got too emotional. I think I have grown and matured from that. Somebody from back home always told me your facial expression will tell you everything, and your body language. People will feed off my body language because I’m the leader of the team. I believe in that game I had very poor body language. I just got too caught up in the game.
AJC: How do you feel as a passer. I know yall worked a lot on that in December and a lot in the spring. How much improvement do you feel you’ve made?
JN: A lot because not many people realize this I was a passer coming into college. My first year I was used to run the ball so I wasn’t working on any passing. so I got back to the basic with footwork and throwing mechanics. And still working on it to this day. Getting better.
AJC: Any wrinkles to this offense we can expect to see?
JN: Very explosive.
AJC: What are your expectations for this year?
JN: [long pause]
AJC: Coach said yesterday he expects to win every game.
JN: We ‘re looking to be 14-0. Whatever comes with that.
AJC: What do you have planned for the rest of the summer?
JN: Class.
AJC: What classes are you taking?
JN: Math, International Affairs and an Independent Study class. Besides school, just work hard to get better. Build my confidence even higher than what it is right now.
Right now we are pretty high.
AJC: Which player were you most impressed by in the spring?
JN: Everybody got better. Even our redshirt people came in and, knowing that this is their year to play, they stepped up really big for us in the spring.
AJC: Anything you want to say to the Georgia Tech fans out there?
JN: To hell with Georgia.

As for the article itself, Josh Nesbitt is a warrior. The Miami and UNC games proved he will sacrifice for the team. With two good wheels and the weapons he has around him, our offense will be potent this year. I think he throws for 1500 and runs for 1000 if he stays healthy. Sept. 5 is inching closer

Interesting comments from Josh about fastest players on the team: Burnett and then a tie between Dwyer and Edwards. I had read on a message board where Cooper Taylor was one of the faster, if not fastest, players on the team.
It would be interesting to see where guys like Taylor, Marcus Wright, Embry Peeples, Roddy Jones, etc., stack up against Burnett, Dwyer and Edwards.

It is amazing how the entire GA Tech program and players are only focused on beating GA! Other programs strive for bowl wins, conference championships, etc… Tech gets rings made for beating a team that is on the schedule every SINGLE year. Great season guys!

Big freakin deal. UGA retired a players jersey who “stopped the drought against tech”. PJ and JN just said in the interview that they’re plan is to win all 14 games. NOT JUST 1. As a Dawg fan, I respect what Tech and Johnson did in year one. That being said, I do think the offense will be better this year, but so will people playing you the second time around and LSU showing a plan of blowing up the play at the line ( Les miles words, not mine). My business partner is a Tech Grad and a season ticket holder. He is worried about the Defense. Most teams will run on you and control the clock and keep that great offense on the sidelines. That’s what I hope my Dawgs do.

i really like josh’s game and i love his attitude. he really showed great promise as the season went along–and by promise, i mean he continued to improve in johnson’s system. i hope he can stay healthy. i know with this offense, the quarterback can take some hits….and i think josh is tough enough to bounce back up. will jaybo be the backup again this season, or will one of the new guys rise up? i guess we’ll have to wait and see.

Reading the opponent’s blog is one thing, posting trash is another. And, yes, GT has some fans that are childish and immature (just like every school). I usually skip comments by the ones you mentioned when they show up on THIS blog, I can’t imagine the trash they might post on the UGA blogs.
What’s especially annoying is that the small minded UGA fans like to fill the GT blogs with trash. You can’t have a decent exchange of ideas without having to wade through the muck the dawg fans post.

Lord Almighty! I love college football! I grew up a Tech fan, saw the light, graduated from UGA in 1975 and have been a bug basher ever since! As much as I hate to admit it, last year’s game was the best thing to happen to the rivalry since Wally Butts and Bobby Dodd glared at each other across the Grant Field turf. As much as we hate the Gators, Vols, Plainsmen (My son’s a sophomore at Auburn – I had a lovely Christmas break!), etc. we’d begun to take an annual victory over the Jackets for granted. I love stopping by The Varsity, pigging out, insulting a few Tech folks, then crossing the downtown connector to watch the Dawgs wreck some Tech *@#! Good luck to the Jackets as they try to win the AAA leagure they play in – the SEC (not the lowly MSU and Vandy version) looms in November! Go Dawgs!

Hey Phil, I’m in total agreement with you about the blogs. I wish the college blogs were more like the Falcons blog where you can have meaningful discussions about your team instead of the childish crap that people like Ramble On, Saint Simons, yellow fuzz, etc. post on other peoples blogs. And, of course, there are UGA, Fla, Al, etc. fans that are just as bad. Come on people, while some is cute, most is downright childish. Personally, I think Paul Johnson is a heck of a coach, and I think GT’s program is better off now with him at the helm. But, it bothers me when people post trash that goes way beyond friendly banter, actually more like pure hatred.

Josh Nesbitt is a class act. I hope he continues to be healthy and ENJOY fighting through the tough moments on the field (after all, keeping his head about him while down is what helped them blow open the 3rd quarter in The Game this year isn’t it?). I have nothing but respect for Nesbitt for what he’s done for the team and himself by transforming into the player we needed him to be last year. More of that attitude this year (and sticking with those classes) will take him straight into school history. I hope he goes VERY far (and through as many endzones as possible) in life.
And PTC, you’re very right. I hate U(sic)GA, but this year the crosshairs are on VT. I know I’m not the only one that thinks that way.

Sugar Hill Dawg … you “saw the light” – was that light saying “you can’t get into GT, so look elsewhere for your college degree”
You mock MSU & Vandy … Isn’t it better for a AAA team like GT to play against teams from the almight SEC than load the schedule with too many Jacksonville State’s? However, I doubt GT’s offense in 2009 will resemble something from “AAA”.
As long as PJ is coaching GT your dogs will not be looking forward to “annual victories” over the Jackets. I’m a believer that PJ’s teams will enjoy more success over GA than vice versa. Gailey is gone GA fans – you’re going to have to accept that – and also along with Gailey long winning streaks are gone as well.
PJ wins – it’s that simple. He instills a different attitude in his players than did Gailey, and we Tech fans couldn’t be happier.
Some coaches are highly succuessful at numerous, if not every, place they coach. The teams they become associated with just get better. I’d say that’s b/c their style, formula, etc. is just simply that good. Coaches like Jim Tressell, Urban Meyer, Nick Saban, Mack Brown, and YES, Paul Johnson.

I don’t know about the rest of the Tech fans out there, but I’m looking to see some 60+ point outputs from this team. I’m not one of those “worried about the defense” fans for two reasons. #1. I think the defense will probably be better overall this year #2. The opposition is going to have to outscore us. We averaged 30 points per game when we won last year.

JB … I thing your business partner needs to worry about other things than the GT defense. Tell him to take a deeeeep breath – the D is going to be better in ‘09 than it was in ‘08.
The guys coming in to play D-line are better than most people realize. They didn’t get noticed last year b/c there where 3 Senior starters (and 1 backup) in front of them that did nothing to warrent himself being bench. Another D-lineman, TJ Barnes, all 6′-7″ 330lbs. of him, was a redshirt FR that was praised by many of teammates as a force in practice.
The reason everyone sees how good Sedric Griffin (LB) is now, is b/c 2 of the starters got injured in game one, and a 3rd starter (Athony Barnes) battled injuries too, allowing a very good BACKUP the opportunity to show just how good he is.
‘09 will reveal names like Peters, Barnes, Hall, Anderson, Egbuniwe, Walls, and a new, better Micheal Johnson in the making – RS Fr. Antonio Wilson; 6′6″ 240lb, DE. Not to mention an incoming FR. or two that could impress.

Isn’t that what you just did by giving your assessment of this year’s game? You also do realize that most sports writers predicted that we wouldn’t win more than 3 or 4 games in 2008, right? You realize that 2008 was the very first year the Flexbone was implemented at GT? As for us not playing defense, how many points did GT throw up against you last year?
As for teams “figuring out” how to stop the offense, go back and look at Johnson’s record at Georgia Southern. Teams sure as heck didn’t figure out the offense the second or third time around and PJ led them to two I-AA national championships. Nesbitt is right, it takes one blown assignment on the opposing teams defense, and him to recognize it since it is an option offense, for a big play to develop. I’m going to be conservative and not assume we’ll beat UGA again this year, but I will say that last year’s game was certainly not a fluke like many people are assuming.

As for how an AJC blog should operate, I think DOB’s Braves Forum should be the model. He breaks news there even before the stories appear online or in the paper. The info may not be in the final format, or written as perfectly as in the final format. The Braves Forum has a loyal following because DOB does such a good job. (And no, this is not DOB … lol)

They’re the ones that stand most squarely in our path to picking up any hardware. And the Governor’s Trophy is something to distract ourselves with only AFTER our run through the ACC. Why? TampaDawg, how many times does somebody have to type it before you read and understand it. Tech did NOT buy rings for the players and have the UGAG score inscribed in it. The Chick Fil-A Bowl people/sponsors/whoever gave the rings as part of the package of goodies that players on both teams received. The Tech players than “designed” the rings, that is chose to have the score of the UGAG game inscribed. The Tech Athletic Association or coaching staff had nothing to do with it. Do you understand now? Or will someone have to answer you another 50 times before you understand?

This feels like the late 90’s to me. During that time we still wanted to beat UGA of course, but they weren’t the prime of the schedule. I think VT and FSU will give us the biggest challenges this year. Even if we didn’t win our conference, it would very sweet to be 3-0 against the overrated SEC.

I must agree with a couple of earlier posters. I’m tired of the trash on this blog. I use my real name here. I coached high school football, basketball and baseball for 17 years. I learned my football from the legendary George Maloof at St. Pius X high school. I don’t post on UGA’s blog but sometimes read it. You can look me up in the phone book (Riverwalk subdivision in North Fulton) and we will talk football… if you are at least 20 years old. I have no time for “teenage experts.”

H OBAMA …. 42 points, 407yds 5TDs passing, and knowshon played well too. 42 points is nice, nice enough to win 9 out of 10 Saturdays. If I remember, Mo-mass, & Stafford had their career best games, yet it still wasn’t good enough to win on THAT Saturday.
ALL of those guys are gone for the ‘09 game, while GT has ALL 11 offensive starters back for the ‘09 game. Common sense should lend anyone to think that GT’s O will get better, and 42 points, 407yds 5TDs from GA will be much more difficult to repeat much less surpass.
But hey, that’s why they play the games.

GT fan…I entered UGA in the fall of 1971 as a journalism major – kinda hard to study that at Tech. To insinuate a UGA student settles for UGA because he/she couldn’t get into Tech is beneath contempt – just what I expected from a Tech fan. My son’s at Auburn presently (likes the idea of metro Atlanta being between me and him) – he told me he’d transfer to Tech if I needed him to do so financially. We discussed the merits of Tech vs Auburn, but the kidnappings/murders/aggravated assaults in and around midtown convinced both of us he needed to stay put!
I remember when Tech hired Bobby Ross – I thought that was the worst thing to happen to the Dawgs back then. I have the same feeling now with Paul Johnson. I think if the Tech people leave him alone, Tech will be a force for a while. I’m glad we’ll in at Grant Field in November – better to humble the Tech faithful in their back yard!

ualreadyknow … S-H Dawg is “firing back” at me b/c I responded to his original post in which he said he grew up a GT fan then “saw the light, and attended GA.” I said his “seeing the light” was the light telling him he couldn’t get into GT so he chose GA instead.
But yeah, he’s got great grip on reality to think there’s no crime in Athens or Auburn relative to ATLANTA GA, a city that’s probably 10x bigger than Auburn & Athens combined. But don’t worry, he’ll post some ‘great’ wisdom about how good the dogs will be in ‘09, and how bad they’ll beat GT in Nov. It happened last year, and like clockwork, it’ll happen again this year.

Both teams did a miserable job on defense (UGA against the run and GT against the pass). UGA’s O did outscore Tech (dont forget GT had a defensive TD). This year will be different, UGA lost 3 NFL draft picks from their O. GT returns the entire O. GT will have the offensive edge this year. Just look at the spring game results…
