It’s been a few days, it’ll be a few more

Sorry that I haven’t updated the blog the past few days. I thought the game-rankings blog might generate some interesting conversation, and I was glad to see it did. Thank you for taking the time to post your thoughts. It’s been entertaining reading.

I’m about to start a week’s vacation, and have been trying to come up with a topic that will allow you to talk amongst yourselves.

So, here goes:

Give me your key individual matchup for each week’s game. If you want to make it really challenging, you can’t use the same matchup twice.

Thanks, and I look forward to reading your responses.

Guys it is what it is…don’t be pissed at the AJC for wanting to cover more UGA news than GT. I am suprised there was no blog concerning the GT/Kansas story. I must say, that will be a great game for both teams and really interested in seeing the outcome of it.

Hey “m”, the uga grad comments are getting a bit tiresome, to be honest. I’m a professional journalist, the same as you are a professional in your field.

“Ralph”, I don’t know what happened to the Ramblin On blog. I believe it’s still being maintained.

“Doug is worthless,” I apologize that I haven’t had much on the blog this week. I’ve been writing a lot of stories for print, as well as doing other things at the paper that must be done. It is the slow time of the year.

If yall want to talk about Tech-Kansas, that’s cool. I did a radio show the other day and it was pointed out that Tech will actually play three SEC schools as part of their non-conference schedule, which is pretty amazing when you think about it.

Doug, hope you enjoy your vacation and look forward to your return. Since news about GT can be scarce here in south Georgia, I appreciate your efforts. I believe the key matchup for GT in every game this fall will be Tech’s offensive line versus the defensive linemen. If our offensive line gives the quarterback an opportunity to execute the offense, we’ll be fine. I believe the defense will show improvement over last year even with the talent loss up front. As a result, the defense will keep games winnable if the offense does its part. We’ve got the skill players we need on offense, and they will impress if the line gives them the opportunity. I would even argue that good offensive line play will allow the offense to score enough that it will take the pressure off special teams. Let’s hope the offensive line excels in year two of the Paul Johnson regime.

One more thing, I like the Kansas games on the schedule. I believe most fans crave matchups like this. But, coaches too often seem to crave cupcakes. Just wish the 2010 game would be at GT.

Barney Frank vs. a foot-long hotdog…no contest.

Biden’s foot vs. Biden’s mouth…only a fool would take the mouth.

Sonia Sotomayor vs. A White Male…Sotomayor in a forfeit.

Obama vs. Unemployment…this match is in progress, midway through the first Q. Unemployment 2,000,000…Obama 150,000.

The AJC doesn’t even deliver to Athens anymore, they certainly aren’t doing UGA any favors. Since so many of you Techsters spend time on the Junkyard Blog, I thought I’d come see what was happening here at the blog of the best engineering school in the welfare state of Atlanta, besides Southern Tech, of course. Nothing, of course. I’m going home.

The lack of decent Georgia Tech sports coverage by the AJC should be embarrassing to you. The AJC has stories about any and everything related to UGA but Tech is CONSTANTLY relegated to poor coverage by uninterested and uninteresting beat writers who know nothing about the school or worse have an axe to grind because they are a UGA alum. You can call yourself “professional” all you want Doug, but your coverage thus far shows a lack of interest at best. It’s awful but it’s nothing new. It’s just sad that the hometown paper can’t do a better job covering the hometown college sports team.

Go Jackets, let me clear up a couple of points you made. As the person who used to plan the college coverage, you have no idea how much work goes into making sure that there is just about the exact same number of stories, and similar placement within the paper, between Ga. Tech and Georgia.
The same is true now.
As far as beat reporters being uninterested, nothing could be farther from the truth. The two gentlemen who covered the beat before I was assigned to do it by myself worked their butts off. So did the two before them. You don’t like the coverage, that’s fine. But please don’t accuse me or them of being uninterested.
Walk into the athletic complex, chances are you’ll see me there. Search ajc.com for the number of stories written about Ga. Tech during the past six weeks, and then the past few years. You’d probably be stunned to see how much information has been reported. Much more than by any other website, magazine, or TV station in Atlanta or the nation.
When I return, I have a couple of Q&As for you with Josh Nesbitt and Robert Hall that should be pretty interesting. The fy10 budget will also be approved, I believe, by the end of the month, so look for more on that.

If the butt sniffers at the prison in Tuscalosa can figure out how to steal money from the University Alabama by using their free text book perk as jocks, surely the UGAY butt sniffers have also figured that one out. I urge the NCAA to investigate text book fraud at UGAY by the butt sniffing jocks posing as students.

Interesting point to note — GT athletes figured out the textbook thing in 1991. If memoery serves me, the season after GT’s running back William Bell was featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated, he pulled the same trick, costing him a year’s suspension. He came back to the team, went on to be drafted in the NFL and I believe played for the Redskins.

Even sadder is that the “hometown college sports team” can’t fill up its hometown stadium for its hometown games. So I guess you are not the hometown team. I’d bet that Georgia, Auburn, Alabama, and Florida could hold scrimmages at Bobby Dodd stadium and have plenty of fans in the Atlanta area to fill up your cracker jack box stadium. Hometown team? Absolutely laughable.

Doug, doing a great job, keep it up and enjoy the vacation. UGA is good for veterinary medicine, journalism and public relations (plus turf mgt). Disregard the naysayers. More one on ones with the players would be nice fillers for slow news days.

Regarding match-ups, the key each week will be GT’s center and guards vs the DTs and run-blitzing linebackers. B-backs Dwyer, Allen and Watson will need holes up the middle to break open the triple option play, which is what then opens up the tosses to the A-backs and the passing game. LSU blew up the middle of the O-line every down.

Anyway yeah, the O-line is key, but I’ll have way more fun watching our secondary. I want to see them flying around giving people fits…and taking plenty of interceptions.

And finally, go easy on Doug. Sure it’s ironic that he’s from their side, but the UGA grads that I’ve hired do just fine. And for whoever mentioned Southern Polytech earlier…that might just be the most dismally awful factory workers’ school I’ve ever seen.

Last post for me. I have to go get my car fixed so that I can go on vacation.

It’s honestly not hard being a graduate from UGA who is covering Georgia Tech. Why? No. 1, because I’m a professional journalist, as I’ve said. It’s my role to report the facts, break the news, provide the context, and entertain. Being objective doesn’t mean I don’t care. There’s a gigantic difference between those two. Being objective means I present both sides of an issue. I provide all the context so that you the reader can draw your own conclusions. And I care about doing my job as well as I can because it’s my job. To do or expect any less does no one any good.

No. 2. I enjoy journalism. I enjoy meeting people, talking to people and telling stories. It doesn’t matter to me if it’s Georgia Tech, Georgia State, George Washington, Washington & Lee, Lees-McRae, McNeese State, or State U.

The face that I’m covering Georgia Tech, where there are lots of interesting stories, makes the job that much more fun.

An engineer from Georgia Tech would never compromise a project because he’s doing it for a client who is a fan or graduate of Georgia.

I wanted us to do that feature last year, but others in another department, who know more about web metrics, etc. than I, weren’t sure if it would get enough traffic, so that department, which did the “Know your Bulldogs,” decided not to do the “Know your Jackets.”

However, I believe we are doing it this year. But don’t hold me to that, yet.

Idk what’s sadder, the fact that not a lot of Tech’s alumni are living in ATL (or Georgia, for that matter) because they get great jobs everywhere in the world, or the fact that most of the people that fill the stadium at UGA never attended the school itself. Hm…

What’s even sadder is that you think this means something. Yes, the average Tech graduate goes elsewhere and contributes absolutely nothing to this state or city after their graduation. Point conceded. Hometown team? Please stop making me laugh Techies. Yes, on fall Saturdays Sanford Stadium is quite full with people who did not actually attend the University of Georgia. Once again, point conceded. I’m sure its very similar to any other large flagship state university. I doubt that every fan that attends Florida, Michigan, Oklahoma, Texas, Tennessee, Nebraska, South Carolina (I can keep going if you like Techie) football games actually went to those universities. UGA is far from unusual in that regard. What makes this “you didn’t go there” critique all the more laughable is that your own p!ss ant athletic department has made it a stated goal to attract non-Georgia Tech students and alumni to your football games. Do you think those AJC pop up ads about Tech football are for Tech students and alumni you clueless goob? Do you think Big Boi concerts and free pizza promotions are aimed at Tech students and alumni you clueless goob? You are a complete flippin’ hypocrite of the highest order. The Georgia Tech athletic department would kill to get non-students and alumni in the stadium to fill up all those empty seats. Tech fans are the biggest bunch of clueless goobs on the planet and blame everybody but themselves for all their problems. The refs, the AJC, the SEC, UGA, and wawawawawawawawa…Its just nothing but whining all year long. I thank god and greyhound that I am not a Georgia Tech fan every single day. What miserable state of affairs. Good day to you sir.

MyWhiskeyClear: Such disdainful language for SPSU shows only your ignorance or your age. Which is it?

Last, but not least, the most important match-up is a combination of Josh Nesbitt’s brain (reading the linebackers/safeties) and the offensive line’s blocking execution. A close second will be whoever gets the #2 receiver spot and his oponent. Without two receivers the “shoot” portion of the offense will not exist.

That is a bunch of biased garbage, period! WHO are the “others” in “another department”??? That’s classic AJC treatment of Tech vs UGA and EXACTLY what I’m talking about. “know your Bulldogs” without a “know your Jackets” implies that everyone that reads the AJC is a UGA fan and that Tech doesn’t exist….guess again. Tech is consistently treated as a second thought at the AJC and I don’t expect that to change any time soon….too bad, the AJC misses the story…again. To Hell with UGA and to Hell with the AJC.

You wrote and article telling us you had nothing to write about and you were going on vacation? Tech has received 4 new football recruit commitments in the last week. Maybe if you concentrated on your job instead of your vacation?

This is my first time posting on here and i think it is so funny that the DaWg fans have to come over here and still think the can Actually bother us with there same ol’ stuff they have been saying for the last 7 years…guys its time to wake up….WE WON! lol and nothing is going to stop us from doing it again this year…your only players worth anything on your team split the first chance they got…so what are you going to do? Its about time that GA gets to sit scratching their heads for a while trying to remember why they are a fan of the team they root on. (That is other than getting to be a part of the cesspool of the south.) And yall really wanna talk about how bad OUR fans our. Lets just put it this way…other than yall, our fellow competitors still respect us. There isnt a fan of another team who even remotely likes yall. They hate yall. Why you ask. Because your fans are ignorant. Plan and simple. So uGAY needs to look at there own trashy fans before calling us out. Oh by the way…please wait until our game to break those wonderful black jerseys out again…They did yall so well against Bama that you may just need the luck….

This rag of a papaer is really showing its true colors today. Tech had a major haul in recruits over the weekend and no report of it. This paper does stink. To the editor of the sports section you are worthless. I seriously do believe that if the great uga reeled in three of its top recruits, the story would be on the front page. I guess we know now why this butt wiper of a papaer is soon to go away.

Chad: why the obsession with the nether parts in all your posts? And the AJC DID report your commits. See page C7. And page C1 for story on Lawal coming back. And quit whining.

Calling out our fans ?

How bout taking a look at yourself? You spend all of your time on the other teams blog and not your own. What does that say about you as a fan?

The Dude, your answer is simply ‘neither.’ I’m plenty old, and have had enough experience hiring grads of SPS”U” that I can safely say I have no respect for that school. May have been started as Tech’s night school in the nineteen forties, but there is NO family resemblance anymore. Low ambition kids that didn’t get into Tech and are too scared of Auburn or Clemson is all I’ve seen there. And you think some UGA kids hate Tech? Take a look at the chip on these kids’ collective shoulder. Pure jealousy. Hire a hornet? Never again.

Oh, and the ‘factory workers’ stab was because they don’t produce “engineering technologists”…they’re just uncertified mechanics that took a math class (a slow, easy math class).

My conclusion after working with them is that the worst slacker in any one of Tech’s student organizations is more squared away than the Southern Poly kids I’ve seen. Which makes sense…they didn’t get in.

SlimG….Who cares…..Our fan’s are loyal as anything. We have jobs to attend to, not blogs. Also, GT beat UGA last year in their house…do you think attendance had anything to do with that?

We may be small, but we are loyal and we have fun; see us rush the field after we beat FSU. When’s the last time the dawgs fans united and celebrated on the field after a big win?

You ugag fans who keep referring to the “we’ll let you win one out of eight games” line, keep in mind that Tech isn’t going to have CPJ as their coach one year out of every eight. He beat ugag in his very first year with inherited (mostly non option recruited) talent. Each year the system is in place, Tech will only get better and better as the players learn the nuances of the offense, and with CPJ picked option talent eventually on the roster top to bottom. With all this in mind, any reasonable fan would conclude that, at least as long as CPJ is the coach at Tech, ugag will have it’s hands full with Tech. It is predictable. That isn’t trash talk. It is logic. You smart dawg fans know it. You dumb ones will come back with trash. That is also predictable.

Glasses, tech gets crushed in the chicken bowl and everyone’s happy with a mediocre season as long as you beat uga. Laughable. Get used to getting beat up by second tier sec teams in the sandwich bowl.

Lucky for us that UGa is no LSU. Second-tier? They have actually won a national title in the last 20 years, which is more than Uga can say.
I’m glad you keep bringing LSU up. I’ll remember that when they run roughshod over your boys this season.

You know Tech really has the worst fans, not UGA. They do manage to sell out all of their games and schedule other BCS teams. We are lucky to get 40K on a Saturday night and we play those 1AA power houses like Gardner-Webb.

But hey, at least we have the good ole tickle pile!

I like to make out with my sister and watch dem dawgs! I was a student at Athens Tech but I flunked out and now I just go bar hopping on weekends. Check out my Northface jacket!
UGA is the only team with injuries, and Joe Cox will beat the Gators this year. Joe Cox is exactly like Shockley except he’s white, slow, weaker arm, and hasn’t done anything but beat a 2-10 Colorado team at home! Plus I heard that Cox got some of that Stafford magic while they spooned at Dega! UGA is number one! Caleb King and Joe Cox for Heisman!

Doug I hate to say it, but if you did not do another report on Tech nobody would notice anyway. You report so little right now it would seem like the norm. Stay on vacation. You call yourself a pro, at what I must ask? It is clear there is an agenda at the Atlanta Fish Wrap. Even Stevie Wonder could see the coveage is not equal.

As a TECH Grad if I were building a building for a bunch of UGAY grads and homers, I’d design the damnn thing with tooth picks for support structures so I could take out as many of those mullet sporting rednecks with action as I possibly could. Send the whole damnn thing crashing down on them. I guess if I ever get into mobile home design, I can see that dream come true. Help the welfare system out too while I’m at it! : )

Imitation is the greatest form of flattery (aka ..stealing my first screen name). Don’t worry my friend…I wasnt alive in 1955 when your single wide was crafted so you are in no danger (unless they catch you for that domestic violence charge). Got an idea…go sit on the couch with the rest of mullet nation and wait on the first of the month to come so you can go pick up your government aid and “FREE CHEESE”!

Disappointed in our Beat Writer...

June 18th, 2009
6:45 pm

Doug, I’m a Tech grad and have been following GT sports for over 20 years. The AJC has always been a source where I would turn to get info about GT. To be frank, I am very disappointed at the coverage (or lack thereof) from you, our “beat writer” for GT athletics. Aside from your player interviews, there has been nothing of interest since you’ve replaced Ken and Larry as the beat writer. I had enjoyed their perspectives and insights but there has been a great dropoff not only in the coverage but also in the quality of writing since you took over.

Quite honestly, just take a look over at the ESPN blog pages for ACC Football. Heather Dinich provides so much more information and interesting tidbits about not only our program but the entire ACC. I’ve turned to her blogs for GT info now… I do hope that the coverage does pick up here when the football and basketball seasons resume. C’mon Doug, we’re giving you a chance… give us something that we can actually work with… and hopefully some insights that only a beat writer can provide us, the fans…

I find it hilarious that one of the only things dawg fans have to say is “Oh its so sad that tech cant even fill up its 52,000 fan stadium” and all of that nonsense. Funny thing is, we won last year at your 92,000 stadium. And everyone will see how tech only seating 52,000 will still be enough to dominate the dawgs this year
