Tonight will likely be the last game at Russ Chandler Stadium for Tech’s three seniors. Should the Jackets win tonight, it would seem most probable that Tech will play Florida in Gainesville in the Super Regional. That announcement will come out much later tonight.
Luke Murton, Chris House and Jason Haniger sat down with me a few minutes before the team started stretching to share their favorite moments during their time at the Rusty C.
They weren’t given a lot of time to think about it, but all three came up with mostly the same moments:
1. Haniger’s walk-off grand slam to defeat UNC this year.
Luke Murton describes the moment:
“One of the most packed games we’ve ever had. There was a ton of people here. It was a big series for us and they had won the first game, so to win the series we obviously had to win the next two.
“In the Saturday game Jason Haniger was 0-for-5 and then the bases loaded. He was a having a tough day. I think he had two strikes [actually 2-2 count, sixth pitch of the at bat] and when he hit the home run…
“We’ve hit a couple of walk-off home runs in my career but that one was by far the biggest one we’ve had. That was an awesome moment for the team.”
2. House noted beating Florida State on Senior Day this season as one of his favorite moments:
“That was awesome. Coming from behind in the ninth inning. Big win for us, big series win too because it was tied 1-1 coming into Senior Day.
“Senior Day was great because I led off the inning and got on base and scored the first run. Murton walked with the bases loaded so he drove me in there. That was great.”
3. All three listed beating College of Charleston their freshman years to make it to Omaha and the College World Series as another favorite team memory. It was also Murton’s favorite memory of a personal achievement:
“It was the clinching game. We were playing well and we were winning easily by five runs, six runs.
“I was hitting sixth on the day. I was hitting around a lot of the older guys. A lot of the seniors and some juniors that were definitely going to be gone in the draft. The fans were basically saying their goodbyes to them because it’s their last game at home. And it was just really awesome to see what those guys had done for the program and the way the fans treated them on the way out. A couple of the guys got chants of one more year.
“Being in between them, being a freshman, they couldn’t just stand up and give everybody a standing ovation and not give me one. So, they stood up and gave me a standing ovation when I came up because I was between them all. It was pretty funny but still pretty cool.”
Haniger said he’s also miss the ground crew: ”The field is one of the big things. Our crew out here does a great job of taking care of it.”

Cool, I just watched an episode of House that mentioned pancreatic cancer.

FIRE DANNY HALL TONITE! It has been going on way 2 long. Hall has been screwing up for years, all that talent an no result. Dan can’t figure out how to use that DEEP and talented bullpen. D-Rad help us please. Dan is the Chan of baseball.

So Danny Hall and Luke Murton call out the fans and the fans showed up tonight but Hall and Murton took the night off. Hopefully Hall will join Murton, Haniger, and House as guys who had their last game at Russ Chandler tonight. He started a second baseman and a pitcher in two different games that shouldn’t have played and left them in until they blew the game.

I am pissed about the game, I went and it was pathetic. They call us out when the ace of the rotation and the middle of the lineup don’t show up. Whatever, So Miss will get rocked by Fla. However, calm down with the fire Hall remarks. Hall gets talent and actually wins games, kind of like Marty Schottenheimer and the opposite of Paul Hewitt. Choking in the postseason is one thing, but at least he is getting there. Now I don’t know if the recruits will still come if we fire Hall, but I can guarantee we will not make the postseason year in and year out like we have. Also, I think it was a terrible mistake for Hall to not get thrown out of the game. If I was coach, I would have yelled at the terrible home plate umpire until I got ejected and then thrown something, kind of like Perno did a few years ago. Getting a warning is not sufficient, Danny Hall. That being said, only three more months till football. And it was nice to see CPJ at a few games this weekend.

45-42, we got the recruits after Jim Morris left and we will when Hall is fired. Baseball has a limited number of scholarships but we are able to off the hope scholarship to players and give them 1/2 scholarship to pay for everything else. Recruting doesn’t matter if you can’t win. Just ask Paul Hewitt. Plus firing Hall is the only way he will get rid of his pitching coach that got the job just because they were friends in college even though he had been a high school basketball coach for 20 years. There is a reason that only one pitcher has shown any improvement in the two years he has been here. Fire Kink and Hall!

Bye bye danny hall and friends what a chokin act u and the Ga coach should be fired….that was another danny hall great job the Bobby cox of the ACC….as for Ga coach its no excuse to lose to Ohio state u beat them 24-6 first time lost to fl st 8-2 and then for life let ohio state win 12-6 then i watch fl state whip Ohio state chock-eyes lose 37-6….what ajoke the the big ten n stuff ashame protho u fired also….Glad tech lost cause now southern Miss be better class vs florida state n florida

Where has all the E. Cobb talent gone the past few years. Did DHall pissed somebody up there off. They all go to uga now. This Hall guy is very bad in game situations. Can’t see a reason to keep him on board. We will still get good recruits without Hall. Maybe even start getting the cobb kids again. Unacceptable!
