Much has been made of the ACC’s inability to win big bowl games, i.e. BCS, of late. Only Virginia Tech has cracked that nut, and it came last year against a Cincinnati team that, while good, wasn’t particularly memorable.
This poor showing has also been a point of discussion in regard to the ACC’s overall strength as a conference. SEC’ers point to national championships won. Big 12′ers point to the same, as well as appearances in the big game, as well as appearances in other BCS games. The Pac-10 hangs its hat on USC, and that’s about all it has to offer. The Big 10, well, that’s a long, slow, dull story.
So, I thought it’d be fun to take a look at some of this season’s non-conference games.
9/3: South Carolina vs. N.C. State. Tom O’Brien has the Wolfpack on the rise. Is this the year that Stephen Garcia finally figures out Spurrier’s offense?
9/5: Maryland at California. This game was a stunner last year, with Maryland thumping the Bears (back to the USC thing above).
Alabama vs. Virginia Tech. Whoa Nellie. This game will show which team is for real this year.
9/12: North Carolina at Connecticut. Don’t laugh. UConn had about a half-dozen players drafted by NFL teams in April.
9/19: Duke at Kansas. This game is on here only because it’ll be a good measuring stick for Dookies to see how much farther they need to go to become a middle-of-the-road team.
Florida State at BYU. Are the ‘Noles back? This game will show if their defense is, at least.
Nebraska at Virginia Tech. The Hokies’ ambitious scheduling continues.
9/26: South Florida at Florida State. How sad is it that this game is no longer a gimme for Bowden?
10/3: Oklahoma at Miami. The Sooners don’t have the best reputation in big games on the road.
10/24: Boston College at Notre Dame. BC is in a rebuilding year, while Notre Dame is allegedly loaded this year.
11/28: Florida State at Florida. Speed bump on the Gators’ road to another title, or a National Lampoon Vacation-like “Road block” sign.
Georgia at Georgia Tech. I’ll let yall make the comments about this one.
In other news, Gomez, McDowell and Spratlin all won in tennis yesterday, while Deck lost his first game of the year in baseball.

The ACC will win all Non Conference Games with the exception of Miami-Olk.
I see GT beating UGAg the worst out of all of them. 56-18 Roddy Jones only rushes for 13.4 yards per carry this year.

Not an ACC fan. But I think they will do a little better this year. They are becoming better and better, top tier conference? Not yet. But who is to say they won’t be with teams like Miami, FSU, V tech, and maybe GT if they continue to improve under Johnson. I personally hope they go winless, but I am biased. They are not taken seriously because like the article says… They can’t win a big bowl, they had an awful bowl season last year actually. Aside from V tech beating Cincy. WOW Cincy in a BCS game! Other than that they had a dismal season.

SEC was 7-5 vs ACC last year. Not that big of a gap my friend. As dominant as you think your Dawgs are they lost to an ACC school so what trash talk is there to be had from your angle? Is this STILL about the past? Too bad Joe Cox is now at the helm and Knowshow and Staffy left y’all…hahaha! Momass was amazing as well…you guys will miss him dearly. Good luck this year. Doug, Striplin is the tennis player that advanced. I believe ACC football has improved significantly over the last couple of years due in large part to coaching upgrades. That’s a pretty stout OOC slate for the conference. Until VT erases the memory of their recent debacles versus LSU and USC, I don’t expect much from them. Miami is probably not quite ready for the likes of Oklahoma. I believe FSU is a little ahead of Miami but nowhere near their form of a few years ago.

My apologies to Striplin, or Luna, as I believe she’s called. I was typing too fast this morning in a hurry to get the post up early.
For those who have asked why the blog isn’t updated everyday, I’ve tried to come up with some interesting topics that will engage you. Most of you have said repeatedly that you are only interested in football. Since football season won’t start again until August, I’ve tried to sprinkle some football in with topics from what has been a pretty interesting spring season for Tech. The Jackets still has several possibilities for national titles.
Recruiting is covered very well in another blog on the site.
You want to discuss something specific, or have a topic that you think folks will enjoy debating, email it to me and I’ll blog about it.

This blog is about ACC football and the first 3 posts are about UGA. Go figure eh Techie? The day that Techies can discuss their own football team without bringing up UGA in every other sentence is the day that you will never hear from me again. Good luck with that pal.
Techies, did Vandy all of the sudden become relevant when they got a fluke win against us a couple of years ago? The answer is no. They are still Vandy. They didn’t prance around like a bunch of idiots claiming they were god’s gift to football. They didn’t give out rings and put “24-22″ on them. They didn’t post “24-22″ all over the internet. They didn’t claim to own UGA football because of this one victory. They didn’t do any of these things because they aren’t pathetically desperate for respect and recognition like yourselves. Imagine that Techies, even freakin’ Vandy has higher standards than you clowns. If Georgia Tech football is so relevant, why are you always crying like little girls because the hometown paper doesn’t write enough about your team? If Georgia Tech is so relevant, what is with all those empty seats I see during all those many noon games on Raycom Sports? It just doesn’t add up. Good day.

I obviously was not talking about CURRENT PRESEASON POLLS since Georgia Tech has done absolutely jack squat to “back up” that ranking yet. Since you’re so smart I’ve got a little homework lesson for you. Go find the last time Georgia Tech was a) ranked in a preseason poll and b) met or exceeded that ranking at the end of the season. Here’s a hint: You’re going to have to go way way way back to find it because it almost NEVER freaking happens. Yet here the Techies are running their big fat mouths about backing up preseason polls. Georgia Tech was not ranked in a preseason poll last year Captain Illiterate. What part of “ranked in a preseason poll” is so difficult to understand Mr. Obvious? Yes, Georgia Tech had absurdly low expectations last year (nothing new about that) and exceeded them. That hardly gives you license to run your mouths about backing up preseason polls. First you have to actually be in one and then meet that expectation or exceed it in the same season. Again I ask when was the last time Georgia Tech did this? Most of us probably weren’t even born.

One very biased ACC fan’s opinion:
GT Football and ACC Football is on the rise…….recognition from the media and many of the very biased “sports reporters” will be slow to catch up with reality.
I will admit the ACC has not had any solid Top 10 teams in the past few years. Regardless of this fact, the ACC has still been the #1 or #2 conference in college football (based on top to bottom rankings – including all teams in the various conferences) for the past 3 years. Hopefully, the ACC can maintain the quality (top to bottom) and have 2 teams earn spots in the Top 10; this way the media bias will not matter any longer because the ACC dominance will be to obvious to ignore!
The ACC compares favorably against all of the other conferences based on the out of conference strength of schedules, actual head-to-head results, NFL draft history, coaching and power rankings (top-to-bottom). The ACC is lacking in BCS bowl victories, overall bowl record past two years (6-12 bowl record the past 2 years), Top 10 teams and media bias (all ACC teams are consistently ranked lower than they deserve due to the strong media bias). For the record, the ACC also had a 25-16 bowl record from 2001-2006 (better than any other conference for this period) & the ACC has the second best all-time bowl record of all conferences (0.525 winning percentage). SEC all-time is #1 with a 0.534 winning percentage. Times are changing……..with a little more success on the football field, maybe the ACC teams will benefit from a positive media bias for the next 10-15 years!
I sure hope GT becomes a perennial Top 10 team!

Old Gold: McDowell became an unseeded player because of two reasons: her dual meet record this season wasn’t very good. she lost 10 of her first 12 matches, or 9 of 11, something like that. She and her coach said he was pressing. Because of her poor start, she was dropped to play 2 and 3 singles. She started winning again, but because she was playing and beating opponents who weren’t ranked as high as when she was playing 1s, her ranking began to slide.

Same crap, different day at the AJC blogs. Don’t you guys get tired of this mess? These arguments have been the same since the end of bowl season.
Doug,
How about catching up with Nesbitt, Dwyer, or D Thomas, and asking about what they will be doing to improve over the summer? How about getting with Ciano and asking about who is improving the most during weight training? How about an interview with Giff and have him describe how the DL will respond with so many new faces? How about interviewing Sewak and getting an in depth article on our blocking techniques? These are all off the top of my head, and would take 20 minutes of your time to research.
I know this isn’t your only assignment, but this has been a horrible blog since you started it. Can you interview Danny Hall and ask him if he gets embarassed choking in the post season year after year even though 1/3 of the team gets drafted in the MLB draft. Ask him if he has ever thought about teaching fundamentals rather than swinging as hard as you can at every pitch and chasing after pitches 3 feet out of the strike zone. Danny is the Chan Gailey of baseball. Good talent but choke at the end and watch Georgia have a better season.

ACC vs SEC
May 22nd, 2009
9:00 am
Okay. Just the facts here. ACC went 15-8 vs BCS+ND last year during the regular season. SEC went 6-9 (oh my Lord! It can’t be that the most powerful conference ever to exist had a LOSING record!). ACC was 6-4 vs the SEC. Bowl season was a different story, and I’ll be the first to admit that the ACC needs to step up during the post season the way the SEC does. SEC 2-0 vs ACC and ACC goes 4-6. Now, ACC did have 10 teams in… People like to bring up Vandy beating BC (ACC runner up, right?) but forget about DUKE beating Vandy AT Vandy. They bring up Bama Clemson but forget Clemson was in the bottom third of the ACC last year when it was said and done. They bring up LSU/GT and Ole Miss/TT but forget that same GT team beat UGAy and Wake beat Ole Miss. Bowl season is important, and I hope the ACC improves. But the regular season means something, too (UT/Wyoming? LSU/Troy?- man the SEC is always dominant!), and the ACC isn’t nearly as “irrelevent” as you may think.

Hey macro tech thanks for a reasonable post you are right I/we need to suck it up we lost and we lost the bragging rights for that year. But least we forget about the past few years as some of my florida fans would say. I dont hate the techies as much as florida, or tennesse, or bama, I would love to see the tech Georgia game become a decider at the end of the year for a NC or possibly to grab a better bowl birth. And now to ACC vs. SEC tell me when an outright ACC team has won the conference, not a former BIG EAST school. You trow out some of our weak OCC games , but what about ARK playing USC ( getting blown out though) UT playing UCLA, UGA going to ASU / OSU. I mean at least we (sec) schedule teams not like a few teams i read about.

I think GT should work to schedule “Big Name” school with lots of PR and media attention but actually stink (like the entire PAC). UGA vs ASU was beautiful. They smacked around a grossly overrated ASU team, so they got double the glory for half the work. D-Rad should take notes, but unfortunately we’re still stuck playing out Chan’s schedule (Jacksonville St again…).
UGA posters: I wouldn’t be barking so loud and trashing your instate rivals so bad. CPJ’s offense was running half arsed last year in Athens and still put 5 TDs on Willie’s D, doing most of the damage in one quarter. Every aspect of that offense was significantly better this spring and will continue to improve under Johnson’s close watch. I don’t see where UGA’s defense has improved any. And please don’t bark back about any DEs being better. On a lot of the option plays the DE is unblocked and unless the QB blows the read, he is a useless defender on the play.

The ACC is percieved as a weaker conference and, since part of the BCS is a poplularity contest influenced by the bias of individuals, perception=reality. Therefore it is imperative that our out of conference schedule includes tough, nationally recognized teams. J-state, Miss-St. and Vandy do not fit the bill. I heard that we’ve also added Georgia Southern sometime after next season. This schedule will NOT get us into the BCS discussion. We need to play more teams like Georgia, ND (they don’t need to be good they are ND)or some big name wannabe’s from out west like BYU, UCLA, etc.

Hey GT Student. If you’re actually a tech fan you should be interested in all your ACC opponents’ game lineups as well. So shut up and have fun in your dorm room during the season.

The players in the SEC don’t have the academics to get into ACC schools, so SEC can select from a larger pool of athletes.

Canes have had top 10 recruiting year the last 2 years and we saw what ALL those FrR. did last year…Sick of people not giving them the respect they WILL earn this year…Watch out all you GT, FSU, OKIE, and VT fans because with the hardest schedule on D1 we will overcome and be the university that brought fear to opponents hearts then and now NOW!!!!!!!!!

I admit that I am late with this response to old gold engineer, and I admit that we were clobbered by LSU, but if memory serves we last played USC in the season opener and lost 24-13 to a very good team. Maybe what old MOLD Engineer was thinking about the debacle our neighbors to the northeast suffered at the hands of the Trojans. Please before you totally embarrass yourself again their as at least as much difference between a Hokie and ‘Hoo as between a Bulldog and a Wreck!
I know, I know… you’re going to say don’t confuse me with the facts, I have already made up my mind. But it’s such a SMALL mind to remake!!

Steve, you’re right on. VT was on track to beat USC and then got hosed by a mega-BS 15 yarder (think Taylor’s late hit on Taylor this year or Travares Tillman pass interference on Heins Ward for the old schoolers). VT played a good game against USC but got deflated after that penalty. I don’t blame the refs, but VT was ouplaying USC and playing on emotion. Emotion goes way down after bad calls.

By the way, I think we can all agree that VT has absolutely the best cheer in college football. “Stick it in, stick it in, stick it in!”
I hope you guys go 12-1 this year (note the lack of 14th game), beating out an SEC team in an at large birth.

the ACC has been a 12 team conf for just a few years. the addition of VT MIA BC and to go back a ways FSU has brought a lot of talent and excitement about the future and for those that watch ACC ft ball year in year out know that there are plenty of good match ups against SEC teams. Southern ft ball is by far the best in the country and I would say top to bottom the ACC is 3rd best for whatever its worth. PAC 10 is top heavy with USC, big ten reeks, big XII and SEC pretty darn good. ACC ball is in the middle and thats fine with me. It keeps us under the radar. We all saw what happened to UGA with their pre-season #1 ranking, YIKES! (hopefully the same will happen to UF) Anyway GT is going to win their division and hopefully the conf. and maybe just maybe the NC. Also look for personnel changes coming UGA way (im looking at you willie) (and mark richt has a butt cut)

Personally I love ACC ft ball….the parity that has developed in the league makes ALMOST every conference game exciting to watch. So, who cares if the conference isn’t rated number one….the football is fun to watch. Watch out for NC State…Tom O’Brien has brought that team out of the ashes….it won’t be long before they are considered for the division championship.

Honestly UVA is rebuilding; however they are playing a very tough schedule this year either 9 or 10 teams on their schedule went to bowl games last year. The out of conference schedule is a D2 team William and Mary (Yeah I know), but then TCU, Southern Miss, and Indiana. As far as the ACC, I would love to see it become the best conference around.
