Cleaning up an APR rumor
Reading the comments on the message board, many of you were afraid that if Derrick Favors becomes a one-and-done, the APR for Tech’s men’s basketball team will take another hit.
That’s not true, but there’s a catch.
Any athlete that leaves school before he graduates, and is on a pro roster next year, doesn’t count against a team’s APR…if he leaves in good academic standing.
For example, junior Gani Lawal has put his name in for the NBA draft. If he leaves Tech having completed this semester in good standing, and gets drafted or signs with a pro team, the basketball team’s APR won’t be negatively affected.
One other thing, athletics director Dan Radakovich included a note in the most recent edition of The Sting, the athletics department’s weekly newsletter, that “As a department we have become more equipped to address an monitor the structure of these NCAA academic standards…”
Tech Sports Information Director Dean Buchan said that the department isn’t reshuffling people, but it will continue to focus on the coordination needed across departments to ensure all sports exceed the NCAA’s minimum score of 925.

I’m a UGA grad ..Statistics. Not an easy degree to obtain ..in fact is was pretty tough. That being said, GA Tech is simply a tougher school academically that Georgia. Georgia is a fine academic institution …but it’s no GA Tech. UGA fans need to stop with the idea that the two schools are on par with one another …they are not.

Never said the two were equal. It’s just that a number of yellow jacket fans keep spouting off about how their athletes are smart while georgia’s are dumb. I dare say 90% of the “student athletes” at both schools don’t meet the average student admission requirements. Just stop trying to convince everyone that all yellow jacket athletes are scholarly engineering majors. It’s a bold face lie and this APR thing is just the latest example of the hypocrisy of such statements.

Wow! I see we are just as childest on your site as you are own ours… The funny part is that most of us have many-many friends from the opposite other school that we would never treat the way people treat each other on these blogs.
I’m sure the APR annoucement was little blow to your ego. You have finally had a better year against UGA than we have had against you in athletics. My congratulations.
So it is a year we both win. You get to crow about beating us on the field and we no longer have to listen to the Academically Superior Garbage.

The APR results simply confirm the stringency of Tech’s academic requirements. I could be wrong. But I don’t think so.

bb, MGT at GT doesn’t require true calculus, but does require survey of calc. But as was said before, MGT at GT was #22 in the nation- and yeah, that’s the “easy” major for athletes. UGA’s is #55.
The Grinch- UGA was the only school with 90+% of football athletes NOT meeting minimum academic standards and getting “special admits”. GT was 7% I believe. Try again.
The APR merely follows graduation rates and in no way factors in how hard getting through a major happens to be, so it is extremely flawed. Sure, UGA has some good majors, but almost no athletes take them. Most GT athletes take MGT, which I’ll admit (having majored in engineering and minored in business) certainly is easier, but again, #22 in the nation at an engineering school. What’s UGA’s excuse?

UGA is the greatest school in the history of the universe. My undying love for UGA leads me here to rip on you Nerds. I love everything about UGA and think about the Red and Black all day every day…. I hate Tech with all my heart and dedicate quite a bit of my time thinking about Tech and how to anger it’s fans. I’m actually a bit obsessed with Tech you could say considering I spend most of my time on their blog when I’m not even a fan. I come here to show you all that I have nothing but love for the Dawgs. Go Georgia. Every other university is worthless. Mark Richt is God. Joe Cox will complete every pass he throws this year. UGA players are the smartest athletes in the country. UGA players have never been arrested and are amazing individuals. I dream of one day making out with one. GO DAWGS!

So sorry for the egregious error. Been reading so many posts from the yellow jacket faithful I slipped with the “degree”. Whether it be a diploma, degree, certificate (like the tech management majors), or, BS, in your case – a GED, calculus is calculus. Unless of course tech has developed a newer, tougher calculus. BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!
I made an A in calculus in high school……no big deal, really. I wonder if those “Culture” majors at tech have to take the super tough calculus. BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
