The baseball team heads to Chattanooga tonight to take on Tennessee, assuming the weather improves. If you’ve never been to a game at the new ballpark there, it’s a beautiful place. And downtown Chattanooga is a fun place to hang out. Of course, the weather there is supposed to be as bad as it is here.
The game against the Vols is followed by this weekend’s important series against Florida State. The Seminoles are on top of the Atlantis Division (34-12, 18-7), and Tech is in second in the Coastal (31-11-1, 14-7-1).
Both teams are battling to for seeds in the pending conference tourney, as well as the right to host one of the regionals.
The Jackets and Georgia play on Tuesday at Turner Field, and then Tech goes back into the ACC with a regular season-ending series in Durham against Duke.
I brought this back to see if will generate any more discussion: Looking ahead to football, I was just perusing the ACC’s composite schedule and highlighting what I think will be the best games each week.
Post yours, and critique mine.
Sept. 5
Alabama at Va. Tech, Ga. Dome. Remember what the Tide did here last year against Clemson?
Sept. 10
Clemson at Ga. Tech. Witness the power of a fully operational spread-based option offense (assuming everyone’s healthy).
Sept. 17 and 19
Ga. Tech at Miami. Big test for both teams early in the season.
Nebraska at Va. Tech. Big Red vs. Big Maroon. A VT win could open some eyes around the nation in the beauty pageant that is the polls.
Sept. 26
UNC at Ga. Tech. Another in a tough three-game stretch for the Jackets.
Oct. 3
Oklahoma at Miami. This has the potential to get really ugly for the Canes.
Oct. 10
Ga. Tech at FSU. Paul Johnson must have done something to make the schedule-maker mad. (Just kidding, these things are done years in advance, for the most part).
Oct. 17
Virginia Tech at Ga. Tech. Read Oct. 10 entry.
Oct. 24
Boston College at Notre Dame. I’m sure the nation wouldn’t mind seeing the Eagles win.
Oct. 29
UNC at Virginia Tech. If the Hokies are still unbeaten, you’ll be able to hear the noise in Atlanta from Blacksburg and this Thursday night affair.
Nov. 7
FSU at Clemson. Dabo meet BoBo.
Nov. 14
FSU at Wake. The Deacons bring out the worst in the ‘Noles.
Nov. 21
Good weekend to rake leaves.
Nov. 28
Rivalry week. Too many good games to go into here. We’ll save that for another blog entry.

The mid-week game in a minor league stadium versus a big name out of conference opponent sounds like a fun idea. I wonder if GT could schedule a similar contest with Florida in Albany or with Auburn in Columbus. Time for the baseball team to get on a roll as they head into tournament play.

Only one problem with Tech baseball, Danny Hall will find a way to choke the whole thing away. Don’t hate me, just seen this story too many times. Great regular season kissed good bye by a loss to an inferior team in the super regional. And yes last year really sucked!

The opponents are determined long ago, but the dates of the ACC games were determined late last year and early this year. Would have loved to have it broken up a bit.
That said, it is going to be just as tough or tougher on Clemson, Miami, UNC, FSU, and Vippy Sue as it is on us. Hopefully, we will have a Coastal title wrapped up in the first half of the year. Give’em Hell, Tech!

I am not as great a believer in OK as some. They were losing with Peterson just two years ago and now they are world beaters. They are not Southern Cal or even Alabama or LSU. I would be real surprised if it gets ugly and not surprised if Miami without Nix beats them, and not because Miami is that good but more because OK is not that good and traveling and a favorite that doesn’t deserve the attention.

The Georgia Tech men’s basketball team failed to meet the NCAA minimum score for academic progress, college athletics’ governing body said Wednesday. The NCAA said the Yellow Jackets would be penalized with the loss of two basketball scholarships.
The Tech men’s basketball team was the only sports squad at Tech or Georgia to fail to meet or exceed the minimum score on the NCAA’s annual report of how students are performing academically.
Georgia had the best academic showing among SEC teams in football, seven points ahead of runner-up Vanderbilt. Georgia tied with Penn State for the best among the nation’s top 25 teams as ranked in last season’s final polls.

Danny Hall always builds his team around the long ball. Once we get to the post season and start facing better pitching, the team stops hitting. Danny’s teams have never been good at the basic fundementals and can’t bunt or manufacture runs when they aren’t hitting homers. Our weekend pitching hasn’t looked good the past two weeks other than Friday so I don’t expect us to make the super regionals this year. There is a reason that Texas A&M is the only team that has looked at Danny in the last 15 years.

This roll over contract that Hewitt has is really bringing down our basketball program. Sure, we have Favors coming in, but what happens when Favors leaves (presumably after one year)?.
Sure, if the only criterion for a basketball coach was his looks, then Hewitt would obviously be the best coach in the country. As it stands, looks are not part of the equation, thus it comes down to Xs and 0s, which Phewitt obviously lacks.

Dear Dawgs;
Enough with the NCAA “academic progress” remarks; as discussed in depth on several occassions over the past few years, this “grade” is significantly effected by scholarship athletes leaving early for the pros. The Tech BBall program was hurt by the departure of two freshmen for the NBA two years ago. Of course, Dawg BBall players leaving early, or even late, for the NBA has not been a concern for many years now.

I’m not worried about the academic progress thing. Comes from too many ‘One and Dones’. Maybe GT should look to UGA as the model for educating student athletes. Folks, let’s just take a quick glance at some incovenient facts over in Athens. Just look for yourself at all of the useless “joke” majors offered (at taxpayers expense)at UGA: http://www.bulletin.uga.edu/Bulletin_Files/discipline_listing.html
which include(no kidding): Recreation and Leisure Studies, Womens Studies, Fashion Merchandising, Art History…and the list goes on and on and on.
Any of one the so-called “degrees” isn’t worth the toilet paper it’s printed on.
UGA getting passing grades comes as NO SURPRISE here, not when these are the majors being offered to the athletes.

Anybody that thinks in their wildest dreams that GT doesn’t have a “dummy” track for athletes just may be as dumb as let’s say, Joe Burns, Reggie Ball, or (LMAO) Stephon Marbury. Fact: In George O’Leary’s last year as HC only 3…THREE Tech footballers were enrolled in the School of Engineering. Compare that with UGA athletes, that become Rhodes Scholars, MDs, Lawyers, successful business owners, etc. Compare a list of former UGA athletes and GT athletes on any who’s who list and see who comes out on top. And then there’s Michael Johnson’s Wonderlick test score at the NFL combine. Want to compare it to Matthew Stafford’s?

VOR: Thanks for the link. I forgot about “Turfgrass Management”. I didn’t see Pre-Business on there, but I saw it listed as a major during the ‘Bama game last year along with Housing. What is Housing?
Ha! Old Reggie… I don’t know that I can blame Reggie so much. I blame Chan for putting his dumb butt out there game after game. Reggie might have done well with the new system. I think he was pretty quick on his feet, so he might have been a decent option QB instead of the horrible pro-style QB that Chan made him into. He did fumble a lot and I have a feeling that he thinks too slow to make the correct reads. Again, Chan’s fault for putting him out there.
I don’t know that it’s fair to blame Martinez for UGA’s defensive backs not being able to tackle but it was obviously what cost them the GT-UGA game last year. GT was in a rebuilding/transforming year with a weak Offensive Line and so-so pass defense. That offensive line was so weak that I’d rather have CPJ’s GSU line than the one that played for GT last year. But all GT had to do was get into the secondary and it was TD time thanks to all the blown tackles. I think part of the defensive backs problem was that they were used to getting away with going for ESPN-Highlights hits instead of solid tackles. That worked on Chan’s players, it will not work on CPJ’s. A CB or S will bounce off Jon Dwyer like a BB off a battle tank. Also, being mindlessly aggressive on defense is the worst thing you can do against an option offense.

Voice of Reason – I looked at the line you provided and a few things stood out.
(1) UGA’s numbers were from 5 years earlier than GT’s. Since both are part of the university system of Georgia I’m not sure why the discrepancy in the reporting period. Also, the dates posted for UGA were pre-Mark Richt. I’m not saying things have improved greatly because the data for UGA is so old, but the report preceded his tenure at UGA.
(2) The bar has been raised at UGA so the minimum acceptance standards for incoming freshman is much higher than in the past. I have a neighbor whose daughter scored a 1200 on the SAT and had a 3.6 high school GPA and she didn’t get in last fall. I don’t know where the actual cutoff point is now, but it’s obviously higher than in the past.
(3) Not trying to fire you up here, but CPJ has stated (and the AJC has reported) that GT will begin competing head to head with UGA for in state recruits. If that’s the case, and using your logic behind the validity of the link you attached, then your special admissions will obviously go up.

Gotta love a U[sic]GA fan trying to talk academics. Of course your analytical abilities can be described by what mathematicians call a null set, so it is not surprising that you cannot reason for yourself. (i) find ANY publication that has U[sic]GA anywhere near Tech’s academics, (ii) unlike U[sic]GA, Tech does not immerse themselves in fields like NASCAR studies, physical education, or art history. Consequently the competition is orders of magnitude more stringent at Tech. (iii) Let’s look to the market that is the best signal. Median wages of Tech are substantially higher than that of U[sic]GA; you don’t suppose that is due to randomness?

AJC article from last football season also found the divide between yellow jacket and bulldog ATHLETES is shrinking. The yellow jacket athletes scored just 79 point higher than those at georgia. GTMan, I agree whole heartedly with your first paragraph.
The second paragraph is what I might challenge. Last December the AJC had an article showing the football/basketball players at GT averaged just 79 points higher on their SATs than those at UGA. What I found puzzling about the article is that the UGA data was back when Donnan was coach and things have improved under CMR. The GT info was from 5 years later (Gailey). Personally, I don’t think a 79 point difference would distinguish athletes from being “smart” or “dumb”.
Also, Tech is now supposedly going to compete with the Bulldogs for in state football talent. Does this mean Tech will now be recruiting the “dumb” athletes?

HAHAH, stupid nig uga fans. Dumb douche bags need to get a life. Let me know when you want to catch a serious a$$ beating. All you kids are about 16 years old….LMAO! 16 year old queer bags. UGA education is garbage, and you can’t get a job paying over $35,000 with it. So if thats what you want, then good for you. Please someone list a job out of uga that pays over $50K without having to have a Masters or Doctorate???? Yeah, it doesn’t exist. Just remember that the avg salary out of GT is just over $50,000. So that does that say about the schools? Exactly.

To moron.
What an appropriate name.
For the sake of argument, let’s assume your claim of $50K for a GT grad is accurate. Most engineering jobs with manufacturers will cap out in the $70K to $80K range. I know many business majors (from georgia and other colleges) who make 6 figures a year and the sky’s the limit. So go ahead and take your $50K and enjoy your cubicle for the next 40 years. I’ll take the growth plan offered by georgia any day.

some other suggested games of the week:
sept 5 – maryland @ cal – this of course assumes the “good” terps show up – think jahvid best will be up for this game after the hit he took at byrd stadium last year
sept 12 – unc @ uconn – intense coaching matchup between roy williams and jim callhoun; oops, wrong sport… this should be a suprisingly good game
nov 28 – the u @ south florida – this is the bulls’ first shot against one of the sunshine state’s big 3 (the u, fsu, and florida) – raymond james should be rocking for this one
