First, I apologize for not introducing myself a few days ago.
My name is Doug Roberson, and I am the new beat reporter for Georgia Tech. Trying to follow Ken and Larry, and and MIke and Matt before them, won’t be easy.
I was the college sports and golf editor at the AJC, but was given this opportunity last week.
A bit about myself:
I’m an Atlanta native. I grew up in Mableton (near Six Flags), or Mablevegas, as it’s sometimes humorously called. Graduated from Pebblebrook High (go fightin’ Falcons) in ‘88. Played soccer, a lot of soccer.
Went to Oglethorpe, transferred to UGA to major in journalism. (Attending Georgia doesn’t mean that I hate every other school).
After graduating, I worked at several papers in North Carolina, then moved to Florida for a bit, then to Virginia for many years, before finally coming home.
I went to a few Tech football games when I was a young ‘un, and ate more hot dogs at the Varsity than I can remember.
Please don’t hestitate to send your ideas on things you’d like to see covered to my email address at droberson@ajc.com. I’ll be twittering, as well, at ajcgatech, if you’d like to follow me.
Thanks,
Doug

Here’s hoping you don’t suck as bad as the liberal rag you write for.

Doug, treat us right or we might throw a throw a fit of some sort, but all the trash talk we know, we learned from HUH. He is world class at trashing. If you want to find out how good he is, just print something good about GT. Man, he will light you up like a M-60 on the 4th of JULY. Good luck.

While you are disclosing things – please let us know a little bit about your history as a UGA football (or sports in general) fan. What kind of fan of UGA were / are you? Did you pull for the Jackets or the Dawgs in high school? How about now?
How about on November 28th 2009?
I think you will need to let us know if you expect anyone to take you seriously.

I re-read this blog about five times, and despite references among comments suggesting that Doug wrote that he roots for Georgia, I don’t see that. He wrote that he transferred to Georgia.
Not that I have a vested interest in this anymore, but the topic intrigues me still: the number of people who suggest that the AJC always assigns UGA-educated writers to cover Tech is absurdly beneath the standard or normal IQ of Tech folks. It’s like a brain freeze that keeps repeating itself.
Sugiura went to Michigan; I don’t remember where Hartstein went, but I’m almost positive it wasn’t UGA; I went to Bowling Green; Knobler went to Harvard; and neither Rana Cash or Marlon Manuel, or Darryl Maxie, or I.J. Rosenberg, or Thomas Stinson went to UGA, either. I’m not sure about John Hollis or Carroll Rogers, but I strongly doubt either went to UGA. I could be wrong on that.
If they did not, Roberson would be the first UGA grad assigned as Tech’s beat writer in how long? I just went back 22 years (skipping Norman Arey, who I believe worked in Tech’s SID dept. There are two very feint possibilities in that list.

Matt,
Nice to see you visiting the GT blog — even if only for rumor-control purposes. Enjoyed your coverage of the Jackets. Hope you are doing well.
For some reason, I thought I recalled either a blog entry or editorial from you where you wrote that you were a Buckeye and had attended OSU. But that’s neither here nor there.
Welcome to the GT beat, Doug. Work hard; write well; quell the doubters.

Matt,
Quick note: Doug’s blog entry with the 11:35 a.m. time stamp includes this sentence, “Just because I root for Georgia doesn’t mean I won’t write good and informative articles about Georgia Tech.”
But I still think Doug deserves a fair shake. At least he’s being honest about rooting for Georgia. The last thing we’d want is a dishonest/disingenous UGA grad covering the Tech beat.

The AJC always does this. Norman Arey, who now does a sports radio show every Saturday morning on WRGA here in Rome is a UGA grad, who grew up a UNC fan and he used to cover Tech for the AJC during the 90’s. It’s just not right.

Thanks AJC, for giving us GT fans a uga grad as beat writer. I don’t care if he writes like William Faulkner, this just isn’t right. And another indication that this paper is on its last legs.

I hoped he could be a REPORTER but after saying he still roots for UGA. I am not so sure. The Liberal media says they cover Republicans the sam as Democrats and that just is not true. So, to expect a DAWG (pi$$on’um)to really give the HEART of a JACKET I just don’t see it. If Doug grew-up in the state/south/sec and picked UGA then he can never really be a TECH writer. I grew-up GT but went to Dean Smith’s BBall school from 78-82 and I am still a Heel fan. I like the Heels but 85 when an exhausted Mark price made it 3 wins against the Heels in one year to win the ACC I danced in the street yelling infront of mom & dad’s home. I loved meeting M. Okarn, D. Colescott, J. Kester, P. Ford, S. Perkins, and J Worthy but the are not TECH. I just think he can’t deliver a good report with his UGA ties. We will see.

Well at least the ugager admits he roots for satan. I think you will do a terrible job covering the Jackets. You will have to prove otherwise.
What would the ugagers reaction be to a Tech grad covering them? You know.
The saving grace is the AUC will soon be out of business.

reading your article in sunday’s ajc reference ga tech advancing to cws at omaha, neb. i think that if you will check, the winner of the regional here as well as other regionals will be required to go to and win at the SUPER regional in order to advance to omaha for the cws. if you disagree, please let me know.
