Greetings

First, I apologize for not introducing myself a few days ago.

My name is Doug Roberson, and I am the new beat reporter for Georgia Tech. Trying to follow Ken and Larry, and and MIke and Matt before them, won’t be easy.

I was the college sports and golf editor at the AJC, but was given this opportunity last week.

A bit about myself:

I’m an Atlanta native. I grew up in Mableton (near Six Flags), or Mablevegas, as it’s sometimes humorously called. Graduated from Pebblebrook High (go fightin’ Falcons) in ‘88. Played soccer, a lot of soccer.

Went to Oglethorpe, transferred to UGA to major in journalism. (Attending Georgia doesn’t mean that I hate every other school).

After graduating, I worked at several papers in North Carolina, then moved to Florida for a bit, then to Virginia for many years, before finally coming home.

I went to a few Tech football games when I was a young ‘un, and ate more hot dogs at the Varsity than I can remember.

Please don’t hestitate to send your ideas on things you’d like to see covered to my email address at droberson@ajc.com. I’ll be twittering, as well, at ajcgatech, if you’d like to follow me.

Thanks,

Doug

Welcome Doug. Though the thought of a Dawg writing the GT beat blog seems like a classic AJC maneuver, I’ll give you a chance to prove yourself a faithful and unbiased observer of the state of Tech athletics. Don’t let me down!

Your revelation of your alma mater makes me wonder… where did Mr. Sugiura and Mr. Hartstein attend college. They did a fine job covering Tech athletics, and if they attended journalism school in Clarke County I’ll be impressed.

“….transferred to UGA to major in journalism.”

Doug, according to the Techies, this makes you an inbred trailer trash redneck that works the night shift at Waffle House. Just a little FYI. You better stroke the Techies’ fragile egos good or they are going to pitch a hissy fit the likes of which you have never seen. I guarantee it. Good luck.

Also dough just ignore all of your random Georgia fans who come on here, at least you attended UGA so I will give you props and give you a chance to report for Tech before getting upset. Stay with the Defensive and offensive line and then special teams for football, talk to Gani see if he stays and talk about all the recruits we have coming in for baseball, and about the UGA vs GT game coming up in baseball.
There is a start, you could also talk to Claytor and Voss about their injuries if you so choose.

Doug, you know we really don’t like UGA over here…perhaps a THWG is in order. How bout it Doug, give us a THWG!!!

Anyway, 2 out of the best 3 things have happened recently for the good of GT.

Gailey is gone, if only we can get Hewitt. Now Terence is leaving too.

How bout it m, Thank God and the Greyhound Terence Moore is leaving

Terrance is gone? When did that happen. I can’t figure out how to read anything in this website.

Most writers we have are UGA grads, it is one of the PR nightmares of Tech’s. Tony B. is a UGA grad and it slightly shows up in his writing though I think he is a fine writer. Where I have a real problem is the Ohio State grads on ESPN. I am convinced that is the only reason OSU is allowed to stink it up at the NC game every year. You hear about this juggernaut team that like a freight train cannot be stopped and this pale slow one shows up to be beat by whom ever the SEC picks off it shelf that year to play them. Southern Cal always sits at home and then has a dozen off each team get drafted by the pros. The biggest problem Georgia has with all this pub is high expectations and nothing to show for it. I have become in the last year or so happy Tech doesn’t have that hurtle, the only thing that matters is the score board and the news media has not figure out how to control that YET.

No sweat…..one of the biggest Tech fans I know is a very well-known Grady grad. Sometimes all you need to develop a sixth sense is a fifth and a job in the fourth.

Lemme see here. One reporter replaces two in Atlanta’s biggest newsroom, a very low bar to hurdle, by the way. I suppose this means we will have even less Tech coverage. I wish you luck, sport model, but as long as the AJC and other newspapers seem determined to show they can make a profit on the internet — a pipe dream — the layoffs (hell, what they are are firings) will continue.

Well, Doug you did pick 1 of the 3 degrees worth having from UGA: a Vet, a Lawyer, or a Writer. good Luck in dealing with us. I would love to see a few or the UGA fans banned from Our Blog because of the foul or rasist crap they like to post. What is the good word? THWG.

DawginLex, YellowSkeeterPeterEater is an ok name for one of you fans handle? I do notice that many Dawgs come over hear to talk just rude and foul. I try to be to the point on the UGA blog until I get called names and cussed at. What is the good word? THWG! what are they good for? Nothing, Pi$$ on um. It’s a Cheer at Tech Games and I it is how I feel about most UGA fans after 15yrs. of going to the games at THE SEPTIC TANK of the SOUTH. Dad & I no longer go to the games in Athens because of your fans.

Welcome. I look forward to fair and insightful coverage of the various GT sports teams.

I hope you will make an effort to keep the blogs a little more civil and focused on the topic at hand (SPORTS). Please seriously consider blocking any blog participants who continuously post worthless and completely negative comments. I also hope all blog participants are allowed to post true statements (even when the SEC and/or UGA brand might be slightly damaged) as long as the statements/comments are true and sports related.

Good luck with your new role at the AJC and I hope you become an avid fan of GT through the process!

Tech is not in the Big Ten Challenge because it finished last in the ACC. The Big Ten only has 11 teams, compared to the ACC’s 12.

Minnesota: I thought my comments would gray out. I’ll have to figure that one out, one of many things I need to learn.

Hi Doug – Congratulations on your assignment and for manning up on the UGA admission – that’s a tough nut to chew for this blog audience, so you have your work cut out for you. I look forward to your efforts to keep us ahead of the AP and ESPN press – that’s how you’ll win over this crowd. Good luck in the new assignment! Go Jackets!

Welcome Doug. Please look past the jerks that post on this site. Unfortunately it mostly turns out to be fans of your alma mater (see DoginLex history and Huh? above). Would love to get some insite on the LB crew and how the DL fared in Spring Drills. All we Tech fans ask for is equal time, equal coverage. Good luck in your new assignment.

We can cut Doug some slack. Out of a graduating class on 200 at da ‘Brook, I was one of 3 that went to Tech. Like 30 went to UGA. I don’t think we’ll ever have a beat writer with a GT pedigree…

Why was nothing reported last week on this site about UCLA turning Tech down for a game in 2010 at the Ga Dome after Auburn said no? Who are we looking at for 2010 and 2011? – last thing I heard Louisville was a strong possibility.

Paul Johnson ‘grew up’ as a coach working for Erk Russell at GSU. Erk was a coach for the Dawgs (and a War Eagle-Tiger himself). I had the honor of talking to Erk shortly before he passed. I have to tell you, he was a hell of a man, even if he was a Tech hater (he invented GATA from GTAA). So, I’m willing to give Doug a chance. Plus losing Larry and Ken is worth it to see Cynthia Tucker unemployed! Good riddance nutcase!!!!!!

Seems the AJC cannot find a Tech grad willing to take the major pay cut required to work for the ajc. Only lowly UGAY journalism majors look upon the ajc as the promised land of employment. Just as well, someone has got to make the world run properly, and someone has got to take out the trash and bus the tables.

How does Ohio State come up in this blog?! I always smile. I am GT through and through but work in Ohio and have been to and Ohio State game. I’ve been to games at UGA, Auburn, etc., also. I can totally say, without any bias, when that OSU marching band heads onto the field at the start, there is nothing that even comes close. It is the most stunning feeling you will ever get. They do it to the nth degree and their teams and their coach are top notch. Any school would beat a path to Tressel’s door if they could. So, after a 6-7 week lay-off, they play in a bow, are uninspired, and lose – and everyone thinks they are overrated? It happens all the time. Tell you what, play them in a home-and-away, regular season series and see how you do. Ah…..ta-thunk! They would smash you. PS: script OHIO . . . . spectacular, innovative and one-of-a-kind.

Mutts-R-Stupid-especially-journalism-majors – You’re the idiot. I’m not a UGA lover by any means, but it seems really dumb for you to critize the ajc when you seem to be on here using it as your forum to post your inane little thoughts.

And anyone that uses R for are… really now. Really.
