CPJ on a few topics

Two of 14 spring practices are in the books. We’ll learn more today when the Jackets put on shoulder pads, and tomorrow, when they do some real hitting in full pads.

Coach Paul Johnson addressed a few issues after practice No. 2.

Here’s what he had to say about the defensive line, which lost Michael Johnson, Vance Walker and Darryl Richard. (Currently, the first unit is Derrick Morgan and Robert Hall at DE, Ben Anderson and Jason Peters in the middle).

“In shorts, it’s hard to gauge defensive linemen. We’ve got some guys we’re excited about mixed in with some guys who have played a little bit. I think that will sort itself out. I think we’ve got to be a group of guys who really pay attention to detail and try to be fundamentally sound. We may not have the same type of physical specimens that we’ve had there, but I think we’ve got some good players.”

The backfield will be a lot deeper than it was a year ago. At B-back you start with Jonathan Dwyer and Richard Watson. At A-back you’ve got Roddy Jones, Lucas Cox, Anthony Allen, Marcus Wright and Embry Peeples. (Wright and Peeples are two of the fastest players on the roster.)

“I think we’re going to have more depth than we had a year ago, but we were very lucky a year ago,” CPJ said. “We didn’t get very many people hurt. As you start to build a program up, the ideal thing is going to be where you have depth and if you miss a guy, you move another guy in and you’re not staying up at night worrying who’s going to play if this guy gets hurt. We’re a little closer to that this year. We’re not there yet, but we’re getting closer.”

He said it’s too early to speculate on how the pieces will fit.

“There’s a perception of what we think they’re going to do, but we haven’t seen ‘em do anything yet. So we’ll gauge it as we go into it.”

Players are being taught to play either position, and that’s key.

“I think it will help make us better. Our goal is to get the best 11 players on the field. It might be three of ‘em at B-back, so they’ll have to move. It could be three at A-back, and they’ll have to be able to move. We’ve just got to get the best 11 on the field.”

Your thoughts on the backfield?

We’ve really got some good looking backs. If everyone stays healthy we should be able to have a very good fresh back in there all the time. Hope they find a good punt and ko returner.

I’d like to see Peeples & Wright get time at the return positions. Their speed will gelp a lot on special teams and their offensive snaps may be limited due to the depth of backs already there.

Reading between the lines it appears CPJ is using coach speak and is really saying, we aren’t going to be nearly as good on the defensive front in 09. The talent level is not close to what it was in 08.

Or he means…that while in shorts offensive linemans blocking and defensivce linemans being able to hit the gaps and hold their own is impossible to judge (which is true)…Carolina Jacket I agree 100% that we need to find an explosive person for KO and Punt Returns this year that other teams have to prepare for otherwhise he is taking it to the house…I would say put Wright back there but he is so small that I wonder if he is the right choice? I would say Roddy be the main guy and maybe wright and Peebles as the #2 and #3 guys right now.

Can CPJ use Peebles and Wright like Urban Meyer did with his small lightening fast running backs? That’s not really CPJ’s game plan but it may be something we can add into the mix.

And why do some people on here refer to Nesbit as a robot? Is that meant to be a compliment?

Just make sure whoever returns kicks will hold on to the ball. I can live with less return yards if they don’t turn it over. Last year that was one of the biggest negatives to me. There were a number of games where momentum turned against us because of fumbled kick returns.

The backfield sounds like it will have a lot of strengths. However, the triple option has the ability to make stars out of anyone if the quarterback makes the right reads.

MinnesotaJacket

cltgtfan I agree with ya…but I also would like to have some kind of threat back there that at least put fears into teams kicking to him…the triple option can make anyone look good…but when you can run over the one guy you have to beat or just run by him that is all the backs ability to make a play, and with Dwyer and Allen being bruiser/speed back its going to be a fun year, then you throw in Roddy and Wright with sweep left…sweep right…Can’t wait to hear the report from spring today…If anyone is on campus that gets on here get back to me about how it went.

Who likes the idea of having T.J and J.C as our starting tackles for the next years? having two 315lb’s to clog up the entire middle of an offensive line? I am really hoping for both of those two guys to step it up in spring practices and be two huge difference makers by allowing our linebackers to never get blocked and make plays all over the field.

GT75, you’re probably onto something. I don’t think you could expect this year’s d-line to be close to as good as last year’s was. Michael Johnson, Vance Walker and Darryl Richard all likely will be in the NFL, and Elris Anyaibe has a chance, too. Simply because of experience, the line won’t be as good.

That said, what Johnson said about not being able to judge players in shorts is the case. They’re not doing any contact stuff yet, so it’s difficult to draw any real conclusions, I’d think.

We’ll see how J.C. Lanier does once he gets here in the summer. Given Paul Johnson’s strong preference for redshirting freshmen, I think he’d have to really open some eyes to get on the field in the fall.

By the way, practice today (Friday) and Saturday has been moved up to the Falcons’ indoor facility in Flowery Branch, so it won’t be open to the public.

Just think of how different things would be if Paul Johsnon had been hired after George O’leary left, instead of Chan Gailey, the worst coach in the history of the world. Even before Chan was hired, when I heard his name mentioned, I said that it would be a horrendous mistake to hire Chan. So needlessly, Tech went through 6 long years of mediocrity, when we could have been a top 10-15 team all those years. Every one of you that tolerated Chan or even supported Chan suck to the nth degree. And any of you that are too stupid to learn from that episode suck just as bad as Chan still does. Thank God and Greyhound the worst and most needless mistake in Tech history is gone forever. Too bad he didn’t take his IDIOTIC supporters with him. Tech deserved better and now has better.

These four DL prospects were near or at the top of Tech’s recruiting classes, respectively. Hall is going to remind people of some past DE’s that were quick and moved to DE. Anderson looks a little like a Kimsey DL in the early 90’s under O’leary but too early to tell. Peters was highly recruited. So it appears they may be a little bit quicker if not heavier. Depth will be key on how fast these younger players can develop, particular in the middle. I like the fact CJ is focusing on return positions. That’s something Bobby Ross was really good at paying attention to every facet of the game and it paid off and getting the right mix in the game.

I think the running back situation will be fine. There is plenty of dept and talent back there. My two areas of concern are the Offensive Line and the passing game. All the talent in the world won’t help you if your O-line cannot block. See the Peach Bowl game if you need proof. No blocking = no offense. It would be great to see the passing game come alive also. If GT can establish a solid passing game to back up the explosive running game, it would really spread the field out and soften up the defensive front for the running attack. That could put opposing defenses in a situation where they can play mistake free ball and still give up long, grinding drives and scores to the option offense.

I think CPJ coaches a really interchangeable offense personnel wise that stays on the field a long time scoring. In the LSU game I think he was trying to open the game up some with the passes dust it off a little, this plus some unexpected fumbles and interceptions wore the defense down quicker than I have seen them all year. It is not like if you get blown out of a bowl game they won’t invite you back again, they have to it is contractual. He was trying to learn some stuff for the coming season there and allowed LSU to play into its strength doing so. Those big offensive linemen wore us out and being on the field for long periods of time with no break from the offense didn’t help. At Navy and really at Georgia Southern he didn’t have the athletes on defense to stop anybody. Even with Erk Russell as the head coach the defense took a beating in those Southern Conference games but that Hambone couldn’t be stopped.

Some of you guys are getting a little outrageous in here. I’m still nervous about the D line. Not just the starters but the depth. With the schedule next year being a little tougher, I just don’t want to have to win shootouts week in and week out. I don’t really think that would break well for us. And even though the secondary and LBs might be improved, if the D line can’t push the pocket none of that will matter. Also, even with the talent we had there last year it looked like we were tired at seasons end. We gave up a lot of points and were getting pushed around even with MJ and company. What would have happened if UGA had gotten the ball back with a couple minutes left? We have to play better D in 09 or I just can’t see another 9 win season or better. Sorry. But it is still D that wins at this level.

DawgBite, let’s see. National championship for Tech—1990. National championship for UGAG—1980. Seven years of losing to one team does not remove that team from relevancy. If it does, then UGAG’s MANY losses to the Gators did the mutts in a long time ago. Do you really think that anybody outside the southeast gives a rip about what comes out of Athens, GA? At least Tech, winning or losing, is known worldwide by the one-of-a-kind Ramblin’ Wreck and the fight song. Hell, you guys had to steal a patriotic hymn for your fight song, and there are probably at least 100 schools in the US with dogs as their mascots. That’s hardly original either. Dawgbonz, yes, it is necessary for me to be a Tech fan. My parents brought me up to make intelligent decisions, and so, when I was 18 years old, I chose to be a Tech fan, having been up until then pretty much impartial. They also taught me not to associate with unsavory characters. So I generally avoid people like you who apparently have nothing really going for them in life. I do, however, contribute regularly to the Salvation Army and similar organizations, who hopefully provide people like you with affordable food, clothing, and lodging, when times are hard. I actually don’t despise you or look down on you; I have compassion for you. Everyone cannot be born, reared, and educated as well as I was. I received a quality education from one of the most prestigious engineering colleges in the world (and the number one institute of higher learning in the state of Georgia), and I thank God for that education, just as I thank God for giving me the grace—and the intelligence to accept that grace—to be a Georgia Tech fan. You, however, are apparently a miserable wretch, obsessed with his lot in life because he is not a Tech fan….obsessed so much, in fact, that he spends all his free time on a Tech website begging for attention. Such insecurity….so sad. It would be so much easier for you if you just accept the inevitable and come on over to the light. Then you can say, “I was blind, but now I see…..Praise God for Georgia Tech!”

The DL is going to be fine this season (as long as they stay healthy).

It’s hilarious how everyone is saying how these guys can’t play simply b/c three SENIORS were starting last season. Three SENIORS who did nothing with their play to warrant being benched in favor of the guys who will be replacing them this season.

Tech’s best D-lineman in 2008 was Derrick Morgan anyway; he’ll be a junior in 2009. And I read a number of articles during the 2008 season in which players/coaches quoted how redshirt freshman, TJ Barnes (6′7″ 325lbs) dominated in practices. And yes, the guys currently listed as starters were highly rated coming out of high school. Now add incoming freshman, JC Lanier (6′3″ 340lbs), and some other recruits to the mix.

The DL will be fine.

Maybe if Tech had to go steal someone else’s logo as their own (Green Bay Packers) our fans might also have as big an inferiority complex as UGA fans commenting on this blog seem to have.

More to the point, I am really excited about the backs we are developing. I also think our defense will be better than last year over the season. Our lack of depth on defense last year left us thoroughly exposed. We have far more depth and experience overall.

Its hard to replace the kind of starters we lost on the D-line, but upgrading (and adding depth to), every other position on D definitely helps in this regard.

I am not sure we knew we had great defensive lineman when we recruited last years group. Like CPJ said you don’t know what you got until it is on the field playing, particularly d-lineman. My point is in this offensive scheme the defense gets a lot of rest unless the offense starts scoring a lot of fast touchdowns, which is not all bad.

I wonder what it is about an 8-win streak (compared to 7) that means you retire a jersey for breaking it?

superDawg, it’s difficult to ‘remember’ that the mutts own us in the midst of our celebrated victory in the most recent season. Time for you to wash those under-oos…. other than the head to head match up (i concede uga has a significant lead in this department), Tech’s history is greater than the flat nosed turd chompers and our present is perfect! You silly little puppy, DAWGS DROOL!!! GO TECH!!!

Hey Ramble On! Where ya been? Did your mom let you out of the basement long enough to post something? You LOSERS better worry about assembling a defense. If you guys think y’all are gonna run on us like you did last year, you guys have the worst case of mass delusion on record!!!I would say that I can’t wait to beat Tech brains out in that dump of a stadium but after reflection, we are only beating Tech!!!

sugarhilldawg, you are the one that is delusional. Go on youtube and watch the second half of the Tech-ugag game and cry like a baby. You might as well because you need to go ahead and get used to it. Your kids may have grandkids by the time ugag beats Tech again. Paul Johnson was hired to kick your sorry arses…it will only get worse for you. Ugag #1 2008 preseason…laughing my arse off.

GT, I played for Erk Russell when CPJ was the OC at Georgia Southern. We werent in a conference when Erk was Coach. Also we had an awesome Defense. You dont when 6 natl championships with a mediocre defense. We had a 2 or 3 great athletes because they were casualties from D1 Schools everybody else was good but not great like D1 schools have. But we played with heart. One thing that CPJ will have GT doing is playing with Heart. I know him well and trust me on that. Georgia should be nervous.I bet most people dont know this but CPJ was the Defensive Line Coach when Erk hired him in ‘83. Listen how much of risk taker Erk was, he then moved CPJ to be OC the next year. We then won 2 natl championships ‘85 & ‘86. CPJ also never played football and was a basketball player and Coach.I never figured why Erk hired him as OC but it turns out to be one of the biggest moves in Georgia Southerns History next to hiring Erk and finding Tracy Ham. Also one of the biggest moves for NAVY and GT. Giff was my teammate, Sewak was my DB coach and CPJ was our OC. I am now a huge GT fan. My son is a D1 recruit in Gwinnett and I hope he picks GT. Go Tech

Well m if he was hired to beat UGA, you guys wasted your money. I will give you last year, our defense played like well Tech does usually. You are one of the many afflicted with mass delusion. It’s gonna be just like it has always been. CPJ might be a good coach but he can’t make chicken salad out of chicken $%$#!

Elton? Why so bitter?! STILL sore from the last little trip between the hedges?! Rock, I agree with you on CPJ! I believe him to be a genious strategist with an amazing ability to inspire great heart. Erk Russell told me that he’d ALWAYS build his team around players with heart rather than ability…..seems to have worked out pretty well for him!!!! I LOVE that CPJ is carrying on the legacy here at Tech!!! We’ve needed heart for a while now……NOW we seem to be embracing this! Good luck to your son….i look forward to cheering him on IF he becomes a Yellow Jacket! ;0)

sugarhilldawg, the chicken salad was dressed in white and gold. The chickenshiiite was dressed in red and black. If you couldn’t beat Tech last year with your best team in school history (according to the preseason polls) and Tech having a new coach and new offense without the proper personnel, you may never beat Tech. It is you pitiful pups that are delusional. I went to the game and I laughed at you dawgs all day long…and am still laughing at you.

Tech has ruined your world by beating you in your own home and NOW there seems to be reason to believe that the tides are turning….you had seven years of bragging…..IT’S OUR TURN!!!!! GO TECH!!!!! ;0)

M M M, We scored 42 points on you with a bunch of first year offensive linemen and a defense that was probably the worst Goeorgia D I have seen since the Goff era. What makes you think you guys are gonna get the right personnel? Your coach is really going to have to con ANY good players to come to that place. There are not many sure things in this world but I know of one,UGA will beat you NERDS handily next year!!

I am a Dawg and proud of it. The only times in the past I have come on here is to encourage you guys to better efforts, not at the UGA game of course. I am sick up and fed with Old Gold, Ramble on, m, GT, BS patrol and a cast of dozens coming on to our blog and insulting us. Paybacks are hell. I will feel it is my resposibility to point out the obvious. Tech needs to go to Division II.

After playing their little hearts out. Tech was able to totally dominate UGA by three points. Most coaches in the SEC would have kept that quiet. Oh no, Mr. Genuis ordered championshp rings, state title I guess, with the score 45-42. So all of us will remember, yeah right, it wears off when we trounce you again next year. That being said, he forgot to coach the team in the bowl game, to busy looking at his ring. And Tech got more embarrassed than they did by Garder-Webb. 38-3, they should allow mercy killing on this one. Best Tech season in 10 years, 8-4. Second worst season in Coach Richt’ts tenure, 10-3. You are out coached, out manned and just pathetic pieces of trash. Somewhere there are trailer parks all over the state missing their idiot. When more wins than one, then start bragging. You are and always be, the number four team in the state, Georgia Southern has more fans.

Since your guys will not leave the UGA blogs alone, I will be back to make your life just a little more fun, dirtbags. Till next time.

Cuz?! You ok? How’d your panties get in such a wad?! Might consider wearing a thong! Truly, YOU are the ONLY leg humper cruising OUR blogs….. shut your hole! Division II?! If THAT’S the case, then 1- your team got beat by a Div. II team 2- Tech, Div. II, has more national championships in Div. I than your beloved hiney sniffers! 3- Tech, Div. II, has more conference championships in Div.I than your little turd eaters! After playing our hearts out, we BEAT your mutts between their own hedges. ALL i’m hearing from your fellow mutts is that uga was the ‘unluckiest preseason #1 team in the HISTORY of the ncaa’ AND ‘questionable calls’….WHATEVER! You guys had a nice run of seven. THAT streak is over and a new one may have begun! The rings?! Seriously?! You pups WOULD think that it was all about ya’ll! You “feel it’s your responsibility to point out the obvious”? What you were feeling was gas! All you did was blow hot air that smells like a kennel! GO TECH!!!!

Well Cuz, I’m thoroughly impressed. You’re the first Dawg on here who hasn’t made a complete fool of himself and actually used reason rather than “HELL YEA BROTHER UGA!!!” as his argument. That being said, you’re still a complete lunatic. DII? Get real, f**kface, and get used to Tech being a presence in FBS.
