Football departures, women’s hoops, Derrick Favors

Couple of basketball updates today before we get to football.

Ken filed this note on Tech’s women’s team:

The women learned a tough lesson at the ACC tournament in Greensboro. They lost to Clemson, which was 2-12 and the No. 12 seed in the tournament. It’s the first time a No. 5 has fallen to a No. 12 in the tournament, although it’s only the fourth year the ACC has had 12 teams.
According to the story on the Tech website, teams seeded five or more spots ahead of their opponents were 60-4 before the Tigers ousted the Jackets Thursday.
Further, Tech had beaten Clemson twice, including 89-54 at Clemson Feb. 22.
“We played them at Clemson, we kind of embarrassed them,” said guard Deja Foster. “I think we overlooked them.”
Foster said that coach MaChelle Joseph warned the team about doing just that in practice prior to the tournament. But the Jackets fell in the trap.
“It’s ACC time,” Foster said. “Everyone’s got to come out to play and we just weren’t ready.”
Tech’s third consecutive NCAA bid most likely isn’t in jeopardy. Tech is 21-9 and finished 8-6 in the regular season in the ACC. The last time an ACC team with a winning conference record was kept out of the tournament was 1995.
For what it’s worth, Tech was given an eighth seed in ESPN’s forecasted bracket, last updated Monday.
But its chances of pulling a higher seed are shot, obviously, and Tech’s season-long goal of making the Sweet 16 got that much more difficult. The likelihood of Tech playing opening-round games at the Gwinnett Arena also probably took a nose dive, as well.
But you can be pretty sure Tech won’t be taking anyone lightly anytime soon.

Also Thursday, I got an update on Derrick Favors’ production in the Class AAA state basketball tournament.

After scoring 31 in South Atlanta’s 93-52 win over Thomson — the first state playoff win of Favors’ career — Favors had 23 points, 13 rebounds and 8 blocks in an 87-44 win over Cairo on Wednesday. His coach, Michael Reddick, pointed out that Favors did all of that in limited minutes. No reason for him to play four quarters in a blowout.

South Atlanta plays Washington County at 8:30 p.m. Saturday at Columbus State. If the Hornets win that one, they’ll probably face Columbia in the Final Four at the Macon Centreplex on March 13. Those are the top two teams in AAA.

Favors is one of four in-state recruits, with Miller Grove point guard Mfon Udofia also still playing. His team meets Fayette County at 8:30 p.m. tonight in a Class AAAA quarterfinal at the University of West Georgia. If Miller Grove wins, the Wolverines would advance to a Final Four matchup at the Gwinnett Arena at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The high school careers of Glen Rice (Walton) and Kammeon Holsey (Hancock Central) ended in the second round, with Rice scoring 14 in a narrow loss to Norcross.

Back to Favors for a minute: he’s playing mostly power forward, and some small forward. Reddick said he’s quick enough to do it, plus the Hornets have a 6-8 sophomore named Nickalus Jacobs who’s still growing and will be a college center. (Jacobs already has offers from four major programs). Reddick said if Favors had been playing center, he’d be blocking a lot more shots.

Finally, you probably saw Ken’s story on three players leaving the football team. For Greg Smith, who led Tech in receiving in 2007, it was a case of a talented player not fitting CPJ’s system. Jake Blackwood will be missed on special teams. Bryce Dykes was a walk-on who didn’t figure to move up the QB depth chart. Did any of those departures surprise you?

Does anyone know about the alleged “rumor” about Favors? I overheard some people in my class saying something, but they were too far away to hear what exactly they were saying. TIA.

Can this BB season just be over? Can CPH’s tenure at GT just be over? Please make it all go away!!! What a pathetic showing this year.

huh? not surprised your name involves a question mark…YOU STILL DIDN’T ANSWER THE QUESTION OF WHY YOU’RE ON TECH’S BLOG EVERY DAY. As for convenient logic, Stafford and Moreno fell WAY short of expectations… pre-season #1 and end of season DONE! Stafford and Moreno were starters for a reason; they were BETTER than Cox and whoever replaces moreno! The replacements won’t have the experience of these two guys and will, likely, be less in the contribution department. Should have been a Tech fan- your name could’ve ended with an exclaimation mark…GO TECH! ;0)

CPJ made a terrible mistake by not throwing to Gerg Smith. Only Damaryus Thomas was truly look at as being a good WR. However Smith had prven he could plya and catch the ball. This is a terrible loss and CPJ is to blame for not using him. The last half of the year, Smith stood on the sidelines. The fastest w/r on the team is Corey Earls, however he has been moved to the secondary. The problem with this offense is htye need to throw more and use three w/r, not two as blockers and throw only to Thomas (on passing plays). Next year, had we kept Smith, the trio of Thomas, Smith and the freshman Hill would have made for a fast and deadly W/R package.

I liked Dykes and always worry with our offense about enough quarterbacks. There was a thing about how few black coaches there are in college football on ESPN television the other day. I think a closer look at how guys like Gailey get jobs in the first place might open some eyes about the hiring practices and how as a whole most college coaches are under talented and over paid. The schools get snowed over the Curry types that say all the right things and look the part but really are just stuffed shirts. If a coach is fat or a little nasty or does not have the playing background or is black he does not get hired. The pattern has gotten where if you read the idiot cards correctly and have sewed together a good resume because of your membership in the “good old boy” club you are entitled to a job wheather you can coach or not.

Where does GT66 get his information?? I have never heard that there was a lovers triangle between Greg Smith, Travis Bell and Bret Write. I think his “sources” are suspicious.

“Her Royal Highness oprah” wants a lot more afros being head coach in the NCAA. If not, then she’ll just buy the NCAA. Pretty funny.

Still scared to answer my question aren’t ya lil’ guy? Don’t be nervous. Just open up to us. Why are you on a TECH Blog every day of your life? Insecure about your own team. Don’t like their blog. Does it make you feel better after the loss in November to rip Tech fans a new one via your scary mean computer in your mom’s basement? Did you get beat up in school so you throw a tough guy image around blogs? Either way…don’t ignore me again…this time really open up to us…Did daddy leave at an early age? What’s the real problem going on here? Why are you here and what would you like us to say to make you feel better? I’ve always told you that it’s ok if you want us to say UGA IS THE GREATEST TEAM IN THE WORLD. We all know you feel that way…you’ve made that point very clear on numerous occasions. Let us know how we can help you lil’ guy. Cause right now it’s just downright sad to see you on here every day since NOVEMBER 29th!

I don’t know guys I understand what you say about greg smith but I think he is just as worried as other receivers we try to recruit in getting to make plays. That is why I say the new Hill will be a great compliment to Bebe.
UGA fans I mean really??? There is nothing in this entire blog that even mentions Athens. I mean I can understand some of your other crap on recruiting and whatever but like really??? I am with Hey – Huh? as well and just wanted to add that when you actually say WHY can you also tell me when you attended UGA…if you actually went to UGA at least you have a reason.
