Georgia State’s men’s basketball team isn’t experiencing as much on-court success it did last year, but off the court the team is performing better.
The Panthers are seeing significant year-over-year increases in ticket sales in a variety of segments.
Georgia State’s season-ticket sales have increased by 51 percent, from 302 all of last year to 456 this year.
Georgia State’s group sales have increased by 35 percent, from 1,443 sold all of last year to 1,952 this year.
Georgia State’s courtside sales have increased from 10 all of last year to 16 this year.
Student attendance has increased by 13 percent through seven home games, from a 344 per-game average last year to 389 this year. School has been in session for three of the seven home games.
After going 22-12 in coach Ron Hunter’s first season, this year’s team, which is much less experienced than last year’s, is 5-6. The team will play at Rhode Island on Saturday. The Panthers’ next home game will be Jan. 2 against Drexel.
Georgia State increased some ticket prices after last season, including a 100-percent increase in the price of court-side seats to $1,000. Seats for new customers in the lower-level sections increased by $20 to $165. Seats for new customers in the mezzanine level increased by $10 to $115.
Devonta White is one of more than 80 candidates for the 2013 Bob Cousy Collegiate Point Guard of the Year Award.
White is averaging 14 points and a team-high 36 minutes per game. He leads the Colonial Athletic Association with 2.4 steals per game.
Georgia State’s athletes posted a cumulative GPA higher than 3.0 for the ninth consecutive semester. The women’s cross-country team led the way with a 3.64 GPA, followed by women’s golf (3.56), sand volleyball (3.48), women’s tennis (3.48) and men’s soccer (3.30).
Fourteen members of the football team made the Dean’s List, along with four men’s basketball players and five women’s basketball players.

Unless there is news, this may be my last blog for the next two week because I’ll be on vacation. I wish you and yours a Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays, whichever you prefer. I had hoped to have some blogs to tide you over during the holidays, but a family emergency happened and I wasn’t able to conduct the interviews.
I appreciate your feedback and wish you a peaceful end of the year.

AJC, instead of wasting a full-time staff spot on Ga. State, why not go retro with an Earnest Reese-style small colleges beat? Valdosta State won a national title in Division II and Ga. Southern again made the FCS semi-finals. You have thousands of current students and alums of both institutions in the metro, not to mention Kennesaw State and others.
