Changes on special teams coming for Georgia State

Georgia State will change some of the starters on special teams, coach Bill Curry said Monday.

“People have come to us ‘let me do this job’ and then we’ve put them in responsible positions and the job still isn’t being done,” he said. “It’ll be clear what the changes are when we make them.”

The Panthers had a punt partially blocked in Saturday’s 44-21 loss to New Hampshire at the Georgia Dome. They allowed an average of 29.5 yards per return on four kickoffs. Opponents are averaging 27.4 yards per kick return this season.

“We’ll work on how you hustle to get into position and make a tackle or block [because] it’s costing us field position and costing us possessions,” Curry said.

Special teams were an area of emphasis in the offseason after the team struggled in most areas last year. To improve, in addition to work in practice, Curry either assigned or allowed starters on offense or defense to play on the various kicking units.

Opponents averaged 20.5 yards per kick return last year.

Curry said there may be more changes on other units as more players get healthy. The Panthers will play at Rhode Island on Saturday.

Winless again

Georgia State will play another winless team on Saturday when it takes on Rhode Island.

Like the Panthers, the Rams have struggled on offense and defense this year. They are last in the Colonial Athletic Association in scoring (7.6 points per game), rushing (66 yards per game), passing offense (141.6) and total offense (207.6). The Panthers are next to last in most of those categories, scoring 11.8 points per game, and averaging 96.5 rushing yards and 289. 5 total yards.

The last time the Panthers played another winless team, William and Mary beat them 35-3 two games ago.

“Probably what the coaches are doing is pointing to what is going on our season and indicating that they have a chance to get well here,” Curry said of Rhode Island.

QB situation

Curry said quarterback Ronnie Bell didn’t get a lot of help in Saturday’s loss to New Hampshire. Bell threw two interceptions, fumbled once and was sacked four times. He completed three of his attempts for 74 yards, including a 54-yard touchdown pass to Albert Wilson.

“The quarterback can’t do anything if there’s somebody draped around his neck or knocking his head off,” Curry said.

Curry said some of the mistakes were Bell’s because he didn’t recognize the blitz or missed the hot throw, and some were the fault of the offensive line.

Curry said Ben McLane, who came on after Bell’s second interception early in the third quarter, played better than he had previously. McLane started the first four games of the season. He completed 10 of his 19 attempts for 169 yards with two touchdowns and an interception.

“They’ll be bracketed in practice and we’ll see who is ready to play on Saturday,” Curry said.

Should change the title to “Changes on coaching staff coming for Georgia State” because anything else just won’t matter.

It’s one thing to be kicked while down from a bunch of directional schools that simply hate us and troll every site that mentions GSU, but to witness all the self-loathing that’s coming from fellow Panthers is just tiresome. Have you guys never faced adversity before? I guess you’ve always had it handed to you! Some are questioning if we should even field a football team. SMH.

WKU didn’t win a game a few years ago. They made a coaching change and things have looked up every since. FIU has had a handful of winning seasons since starting football; yet, they are joining a “higher” regarded conference next year: The list goes on and on. This stuff takes time. CBC has done a terrible job at building this program. The team has declined every year. After this year he will no longer be in the equation.

It’s all about chopping wood guys and gals. Got to keep moving despite the adversity. Stop with the self pity. All of those schools bad mouthing us are really undercover admirers. Soon enough we’ll be dominating them in football just as we have done in basketball.

@ Truth Seconded. It’s refreshing to see this attitude with the season we’ve had. Hating all of the horrible talk coming from our own. I won’t stop going to home games, but I may have to quit Message Boards.

I’m not a Panther. I’m a GaState alumnus who thinks FBS football was a poor decision which will not pay off. Less than half the FBS schools are profitable.

GaState should have continued to focus on building school programs and all the other sports, not the football program which robs us all. Don’t make students and taxpayers foot the bill for this new football empire.

The funniest part is many of the posters new the CAA was going to be a wake up call, but now they act as if this shouldn’t happen. It’s year 3 people everything will turn itself around.

And stop engaging these Southern trolls on our message boards masquerading as if they are concerned with our stadium situation. They are on their boards and boards they have no business being on stirring the pot. At the end of the day, they want to be in position to play big boy football. We got it, they don’t.

To Sheryl or Bill: if you read these posted comments, why are we not following the lead of our neighbor next door at Georgia Tech? They just FIRED their defensive coordinator for poor performance!. Is their level of acceptance of job responsibility that much higher than our, I hope not. Both of our coordinators should have been FIRED by NOW! If not both at lease our offensive coordinator because he has had four years on job with the SAME results. Our new defensive coordinator is not ready for that HUGE responsiblity at this level. I believe in our players, they just need TRUE leadership!

I’ll take our attendance numbers over whatever it is you consider your fan base to be. stagnant? naw……only thing stagnant is the play calling going on in #dadome.

Sun Belt Rejection Letter

October 8th, 2012
9:41 pm

Dear Gag Southern,

You have been quite a good football team in D-1AA and have 6 national titles you can be proud of, unfortunately you made the decision to try and go FBS is a little too late. It is extremely apparent that you are bitter about GSU moving up to FBS after only 3 years in existence. Yes, GSU is terrible and cannot get fans to show up, but their initiative and potential is far greater than us taking a team with your credentials that can only get 20-25 thousand fans to show up after such previous success.

I am so sorry,

Yours Truly,

Karl Benson

What sort of attendance numbers do you think Southern should be at right now? Considering it’s middle of the road for several conferences at the “big boy” level…….
i know gag state fans are the most knowledgeable fan base out there, but are you aware gsu actually turned the sun belt down once before? are you aware the sun belt is still talking to gsu? you are completely naive as your fan base has previously demonstrated to think anyone at gsu is losing sleep over gag state’s progress compared to gsu.

Who is going to play special teams? What a joke.
