Here are a few notes, quotes and observations following Georgia State’s 35-3 loss to William and Mary on Saturday. (Note, this is an abbreviated version based off stories and releases; I wasn’t assigned to cover the game).
The Panthers committed seven turnovers.
William and Mary scored 28 points off those turnovers.
Ronnie Bell, making his first start, threw four interceptions and was sacked twice. He passed for 157 yards.
Bell is the fifth different starting quarterback coach Bill Curry has used in 27 games.
The Tribe rushed for 312 yards.
Donald Russell rushed for 107 yards, cracking the century mark for the second consecutive game.
Georgia State’s offense is now averaging 10 points and 287 yards per game.
Georgia State’s defense is now giving up an average of 38.4 points and 460 yards per game.

“We work on ball security over and over and over, but if you turn the ball over that many times, you have no chance. We have individuals who are showing good things, but our team has got to come together and do all the things that it takes to win.”
Here’s one from my old newspaper, the Daily Press, about the game. (registration is required)

It’s never as bad as it looks and never as good as it feels. Hang in there guys, keep fighting and working hard. The effort is there, it must be sustained. If you turn the ball over that many times you can’t beat the “Little sisters of the poor” as I’ve heard many times. We dominated the first quarter and played well on defense for long stretches and seem to have fixed our special team woes to an extent. All positive signs. Don’t give up on this team, nows the time for all true Panthers to rally…………..

Sigh.
We deserve all the ridicule we are getting.
This team is just terrible.
Nothing works.
I’m sorry, but can we please just go ahead and change coaches now?

Hey Doug – here are ny notes and observations….simple.
Observation 1: John Bond couldn’t get out of a wet paper bag.
Observation 2: Bill Curry has been a loser his entire career.
Note: GSU deserves to have a better group of coaches than these morons.

Had tix but decided not to make the 45 minute trek down to Williamsburg…appears they needed more fan support (?)
I go back to my comments from last week …they have got play very unconventional ball because the typical run and shoot isn’t working. Creativity may get them out of these doldrums! For instance give the ball to The Donald and have him toss it occasionally. More hail marys. Offside kicks. Go for it regularly on 4th down. Etc etc etc
WE WILL COME BACK!! GO PANTHERS!!
PS – Bill, are you listening?

It was. I would say their 0-4 record is different than Georgia State’s. Much closer losses.

This is by far one of the most undisciplined and poorly coached teams I’ve ever seen.
The performance this season is all on Curry and his coaches. They have had the time to bring in their players and put their schemes in. The only one who gets sort of a pass is Midgett.
It’s disgusting and it’s also on the GSU administration for letting it go on this long. Either get serious about football and winning or get out of it.

I hereby declare my GSU football season over. I will not give my season tickets away (would anyone want them?), the seats will go vacant. While I really feel for our players going through this, I have had enough and cannot watch any more this season.
Will I buy season tickets next year? Yes. However, they will have to improve to get me to show up. Will there be a time when I will not renew? Yes, either when I am too old to get there or the sorry showing is too much to stomach. Hopefully it will the former and not the latter but there is a limit.

Yep. This is just horrible coaching.
Is there any doubt anymore?

Might be eloquent, but he is just a terrible coach.

And yes, Midget’s defense is a joke.
There is not one single person who should be retained after this season.
What can we do but suffer through this season? Bill Curry is going to finish the season. We can’t force him out anymore than we already have.

I am as big of a critic of the GaState football debacle as anyone … but everyone, lay off the players … It’s not their fault they were sold a bill of goods, under-coached, and put in a difficult position to try and succeed

Realistically you can’t turn the ball over that many times and for the defense to hold. It takes time and patience to build a program. You just don’t become successful over night.

Ugh! Bell looked good when he wasn’t throwing INTs. I think he has potential at the QB position. But the defense needs so much work, they just don’t seem able to stand up to any other team’s O-line and rarely challenge the QB. If the defense was more balanced, it would take some of the pressure of the QB. I am a little tired of Curry’s rhetoric, I think Levick should cut him loose now. Season ticket holder, and I will not attend another home game until they can chalk up a win.

I’ve posted before that your next head coach should be former VSU QB and current Middle Tenn. State OC Buster Faulkner. He hung 49 on Tech at Grant Field yesterday.VSU is 3-2 so far this year. To heck with Georgia State. I want him in Valdosta. Good luck the rest of the way. Go Panthers and Blazers !!!

GA.State is the biggest embarrament in Div. 1 sports. The football program is the weakest in all of Div. 1 and 1-aa. State could not win 5 games with an 11 game Div. 3 schedule. By the way the real GSU- Ga. Southern – beat a ranked Samford team (#25) 35-16 in front of 20,300 people outdoors in the rain. ODU will beat GSU by 45+.

I feel for these young players. There are good athletes taking the field for GSU, but they have to be the most undisciplined team I have seen. Someone needs to take charge of this football program. I can’t believe the AD allowed a third year.

No question that we may very well be the worst football team in all of D1. That’s FBS and FCS combined. I can’t sugarcoat it.
Curry was going to get the third year because, well…he’s Curry.
But it’s no secret that some people would have had no hurt feelings if he had retired sooner.
Remember that he was the hire of the previous AD.
I just hope CL had another Ron Hunter up her sleeve. Of course, I’d not lose any sleep if we changed up at AD either.

GSU is absolutely horrible but at least we aren’t that pathetic that we try to yammer on a GaSo blog – if one even exists?

Why Curry turned down a contract extension
July 26th, 2011 by Doug Roberson
Georgia State football coach Bill Curry declined to sign a contract extension earlier this year, keeping a promise he made when he accepted the job in 2008.
Back then, the now-68-year-old Curry said he would work for the five-year duration of the contract, and then decide if he wanted to continue beyond that.
“I want to stay as long as I’m asset, and not beyond when I’m a liability,” he said.
There is a provision in his contract that provides on June 30 either Curry or the University, in this case athletic director Cheryl Levick, an option to extend the deal that pays Curry an average base salary of $350,000 per year.
Discussions started but Curry said, “I promised five years and I will keep my word.”
Levick said she is “perfectly fine” with Curry’s decision. “We want him to be our coach as long as he wants to continue coaching.”
May have been another AD’s hire, however,,,

No way Ga State could compete with William & Mary. Watching game on TV it became obvious that in four years this team is no better than the day they started. Very little talent, team speed is woeful
(W&M ran rings around them with athletic, fast players). No matter who coaches this team should never have moved to FBS and will be trampled at that level of football.

I’m going to be at the game this Saturday. Just as I always am.
And I will wear my blue t-shirt. Just as I always do.
But I’m resigned to accepting that we will not win a single game this season.
The offseason can’t get here fast enough.

I guess I have been living under a rock, but I loved watching Ga State play on TV. I was not happy with the results, but watching State from home play football is amazing. I think fans need a reality check on how awesome it is that we even have a football team. Even though State played poorly I am going to try to come to some games this season. I am very proud of my school.
