Previewing Georgia State vs. William and Mary

Three storylines for Georgia State’s game at William and Mary on Saturday in Williamsburg, Va.

1. Can Georgia State’s offense find a spark? After another lackluster showing in last week’s 35-14 loss to Richmond, coach Bill Curry reopened the quarterback competition between Ben McLane, who started the first four games, and Ronnie Bell. The offense has averaged 297 yards and 11.8 points per game. But the quarterbacks, who haven’t been as accurate as expected, aren’t entirely to blame. The offensive line had pass-blocking issues early, and the wide receivers have had trouble with consistency. Expect both quarterbacks to get playing time as offensive coordinator John Bond looks for someone who can the offense’s luck around.

2. Can the defense rebound? After giving up 28 points in the first half of last week’s loss, the Panthers allowed one more touchdown for the best two-quarter stretch they’ve had this season. But like the offense, the defense failed to make plays when possible. An interception was dropped that likely would have resulted in a touchdown. A fifth down was given when a player lined up offside on fourth-and-goal at the 1-yard line.

3. If not now, when? If the Panthers can’t beat the Tribe, whose 0-4 record doesn’t reflect the closeness of their losses, the rest of the schedule doesn’t offer many opportunities for a victory. The remaining teams are a combined 13-9, including winless Rhode Island, but the Panthers will play that game in Kingston, R.I.

A win for Georgia State would …

Be its first of the season and first in the Colonial Athletic Association.

A win for William and Mary would …

Be its first of the season.

Tweet of the week

Despite the adversity we are facing this season we still have a lot of football left #GSUfootball

Jeff Schultz predicts

Both teams are 0-4. So coach Bill Curry’s comment, “I think it’s clear that both teams will be hungry for a win,” seems, well, appropriate. The Panthers held Richmond to seven points in the second half last week. A moral victory. But quarterback play and the offense are still issues, so I can’t push the button on a road win. Prediction: Panthers lose.

Not sure why Bond would say expect both qb’s to get play. . .makes no sense McLane couldn’t get job done in the first 4 games so give some games to Ronnie
Bell from start to finish and then make your decision

Agree with Blueblooded. But this is John Bond we’re talking about and logic and common sense have never been his forte.

Panthers score early and often, and we’ll look like a much improved team in the rest of the season.

Sorry Bubba – Georgia Southern can plan all they want but no FBS conference is going to invite you to the big show. Life isn’t fair and neither is FBS football. SunBelt won’t invite you cause they already took GSU and C-USA doesn’t want you either. Maybe you can join the MAC?
The big conferences will never ever ever consider you!

As I watch the GSU game on CSS, I am once again given more evidence that Bill Curry is the problem. This team is so fundamentally UNsound that it boarders on absurd. Seriously. This team is very poorly coached.

“From 1892–1909, the head coach at Georgia changed frequently, with 14 different head coaches in a 17 year period. The combined record was 47–52–10 (.477 winning percentage).” from UGA football Wikipedia entry.

Watching the game on CSS, I thought we had a shot in the first, but our continued mistakes have put us behind 3-21 in the third. I’m glad Bell has been given a chance at QB and Lutz at kicking. But I hope we can settle down and quit jerking around the lineup every week! Maybe the AD should have a chat with Curry and tell him to select his best players and stick with ‘em and that they should have known the best players before the first game!

Look guys…..we have a stable of creme de la creme recruits coming in next year. These guys are all under the radar no stars that have 5 star skills. You will see a tremendous turnaround next year once they get on campus and under the tutilage of our strength and conditioning coach.

Trust me. I have inside information deep in the bowels of the program. I am so inside this program that I know things that even the coaches do not yet know.

Atlanta Mafia, I hate to tell you this, but Conference USA has ALREADY approached Georgia Southern who had 23000 filling their stadium tonight for another win, not the 5000 in the Dome last week for Ga. State. The Sun Belt approached Georgia Southern last year, who politely TURNED THEM DOWN. Why, the competition like GA. State was being considered. After this year the stadium will hold over 40,000 and they will be fine.

I’m sorry but if that kid who led the offense to 3, count ‘em 3, points tonight is a college-level QB I’m Abe Lincoln. And I’ve never seen so many defenders jogging along 10 yards behind the play, hoping the ball carrier will fall down so they won’t have to get involved. Pathetic.

LMAO! Ben, good thing you thought The Donald would run it down our throats! W&M with over 300 rushing yards and #stateofshock with fewer than 100!!!! LOL. Run it down their throats? THAT’S WHAT SHE SAID. Ben after getting absolutely demolished by UR, “We play this way vs. W&M we will be in the game. They are awful. Win #1 comes next Saturday.” HAHAHAHAHAHAHA Panama, “The CAA is a doormat to be stepped on this year.” and, “Dont worry about us, we have a surprise for that CAA booty.” I couldn’t make this stuff up. True story, I actually felt bad for the Panther players…so much so, I clapped for them and told them to keep their heads up as they walked into the tunnel. They looked like all hope is lost. And, it is.

Lets not get ahead of ourselves. I would love to be in the Sun Belt conference. When we get an invite to whatever conference MAC,SUN BELT,CUSA,NEW FBS CONF. I am sure we will be able to compete. We recruit the same players that the lower conferences do right now. I know alot of the player will want to stay home instead of going to Kent St,Mexico,Ball St ect. We have also traditionally recruited well in FL and now more in AL and SC.

I know State will get some of these recruits as well but so will we.
